PART 1 GENERAL
1.1
SCOPE
This work shall consist of construction of a pavement of Portland cement
concrete on a prepared base in accordance with the Specification and
Drawings.
1.2
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1.1

Portland cement shall conform to the requirements in the structural
specifications Cast-in-place Concrete.
2.2
AGGREGATES
a.
Fine Aggregates
Fine aggregates shall consist of natural sand, stone screenings of other
inert materials with similar characteristics, or combinations thereof,
having hard, strong and durable particles approved by the Engineer.
Fine aggregate from different sources of supply shall not be mixed or
stored in the same pile nor used alternately in the same class of
concrete without the approval of the Engineer.
It shall contain more than three (3) mass percent of materials passing
the 0.075mm (No. 200 sieve) by washing nor more than one (1) mass
percent each of clay lump of shale.

Coarse Aggregate
Coarse aggregate shall consist of crushed stone, gravel, blast furnace
slag, or other approved inert materials of similar characteristics, or
combinations thereof, having hard, strong, durable pieces and free
from any adherent coatings.
It shall contain not more than one (1) mass percent of material passing
the 0.075mm (No. 200) sieve, not more than 0.25 mass percent of clay
lumps, nor more than 3.5 mass percent of soft fragments.
If the coarse aggregate is subjected to five (5) cycles of the sodium
sulfate soundness test, the weighted loss shall not exceed 12 mass
percent. It shall have a mass percent of wear not exceeding 40 when
tested by AASHTO T96.
If slag is used, its density shall not be less than 1120 kg/cu. Meter. The
gradation of the coarse aggregate shall conform to Table 2.
Only one grading specification shall be used from any one source.

PLACING CONCRETE
a.
The concrete shall be so deposited and spread that segregation will not
occur, and a uniform layer of concrete produced whose thickness is
approximately 20mm greater than that required for the finished
pavement. Rakes shall not be used for handling concrete.
b.
c.
d.
Workers on the job shall have mobile foot bridges at their disposal so
that they need not walk on the wet concrete.

FINISHING CONCRETE
a.
The concrete shall be compacted and finished by a mechanical, selfpropelled finishing machine of approved type, having two
independently operated screeds. If a machine possessing only one
screed is approved, the screed will be not less than 450mm is width,
and shall be equipped with compensating springs to minimize the
effect of the momentum of the screed on the side forms. The number
of driving wheels, the weight of the machine, and the power of the
motor shall be so coordinated as to prevent slippage. The top of the
forms and the surface of the finishing machine wheels shall be kept
free of concrete or dirt.

After the final pass of the finishing machine, and when the concrete
has started to dry, the surface of the pavement shall be finished with
an approved longitudinal float. The float may be operated either
manually or by mechanical means. The float may be either wood or
metal, shall be straight and smooth and light in weight so as not to
displace or sink into the concrete surface.
f.

h.
After the concrete has been brought to the required grade, contour and
smoothness, it shall be finished by passing over the concrete a drag of
one or two burlap cloths, which give the surface the required
roughness. The vehicle used to carry those cloths may be independent
of the concrete laying machine or may be incorporated with it, and
may be operated either by hand or mechanically.

As soon as the concrete has attained its initial set, the edges of the
pavement, the longitudinal joints, the construction, dummy and
expansion joints not sawed shall be carefully finished with an edging
tool having a radius of at least 5 millimeters. The tools, the special
accessories for cutting impressed joints, and the methods of
workmanship shall be such as will produce a joint whose edges are of
the same quality of concrete as the other portions of the pavement.
Methods and workmanship which make use of excess mortar or grout
in this area shall be eliminated. Unnecessary tool marks shall be
eliminated during construction, and the edges test smooth and true to
line.
STRIKING FORMS
Forms shall remain in place at least 12 hours after the concrete has been
placed. When working conditions are such that the early strength gain of the
concrete is delayed, the forms shall remain in place for a longer period, ad
directed by the Engineer. Bars or heavy loads shall be repaired promptly by
the Contractor as directed by the Engineer without any additional payment.
3.10
CURING CONCRETE
The curing of the concrete shall comply with the requirements of the
Structural specifications Cast-in-Place Concrete.
