The white background, mixed with

the blue and red text shows the

colours of the American flag. This
patriotic feature would be well
approved in an American state,
since lots of people there have a
fierce pride for their country. This
slight nod to the American culture
would show Forrest to be proud in
his nationality also. This mixed with
the fact he fights for the U.S
marines tin the film, would show
Forrest to almost be an American
hero, which would make the
American viewer approve of him

Forrests posture is very

childlike. He is sitting with
his fingertips on the bench,
with his eyes pointed
skywards. This looks almost
comedic, for a grown man to
be sitting in such a way. This
could mean that he cant
wait for something, and that
he is anticipating a future
event. This created
excitement for the film,
since Forrests adventure
will be one where it will have
the viewer on the edge of
their seat. However showing
Forrest in such a childlike
sense could be viewed as

A small briefcase is positioned

underneath Forrest, which is
wood with black rims. This is
typically the sort which people
use to go on holiday with,
instead of a business trip for
example. This would make
Forrest appear as if he is
embarking upon an adventure,
or going on holiday. Packing a
small case for holiday is usually
a childlike activity. This
enhances his childlike

The caption is skewed heavily to side to

side, showing the charming style of the film.
The black font sticks heavily form the
background and offers a heavy promise to
the reader. It stresses the importance of
Forrests perspective, and emphasises just
how special he is. The inclusion of his
surname for a second time means that the
name of the character sticks in the viewers
head more, which conflicts the merging of a
disability and the complete identity of
someone. Whereas most movie posters
make the disability the most prominent
feature, the Forrest Gump poster makes the
character himself the focal point and shows
his name on more than one occasion,
The prominence of
the colour white in
this image is
significant since it
would show Forrest
to be innocent. White
is the colour of purity
(Doves, Wedding
dresses) so
accompanying Tom
Hanks with this
colour would mean
the viewer believes
his is innocent and

The trainers which

Forrest is wearing,
mixed with his
outgoing childlike
posture and white
suit, and would mean
he is socially unaware
of general fashion
rules. This could be
linked to his innonce
but could also be used
as a means to
As opposed to having Forrest sitting on a regular
chair, or standing, the creator of this poster chose
to place him on a park bench. A bench like this is
always placed in places of public access and is only
ever used for temporary sittings. This would mean
that Forrest is going on an adventure of some
description, showing that he is outgoing. This would
be enticing to the viewer who wants to enjoy a film
of action. This is supported by his on edge posture,
since he is preparing to leave at any one moment.
Something as simple as a bench has lots of
connotations, which helps demonstrate the

Although the image is heavily grained due

to the age of the picture, it is clear that the
original photo intended to raise light
around his face. This draws attention to
the upper part of his body, and
dramatically reveals his disability.
Positioning light like this means that the
elephant man is heavily brought out
against the grainy background.

The elephant mans mask, which is

shown to be a potato sack, makes it
seem that he is fearful or wanting to
hide. Naturally, many people would
be afraid of someone who is hiding
their identity, especially in his shady
stance. All of this combined has
connotations of danger, showing the
elephant man to be almost evil.
Alternatively it could mean that he is
disgusted by his own appearance and
feels the need to hide. This
interpretation shows disability as
something that is something which is

This caption is the

underlying message of
the film, about a man who
strives for equality in
society, and how he does
not want to be defined by
his disability. This is a
very emotive caption and
is said in the film, the
stuttering around the
word man shows he is
not confident in what he
is saying, and such a
simple sentence, in
declaring he is human
makes the audience feel
great sympathy for the
character. Although it is
inspiring that this
disabled person is
standing up for his rights,
it is interesting how
unsure and almost
cowardly the poster
As well as the face, the elephant man
also has some negative posture and
apparel. His posture is upright on a
corner street, with his limbs presumably
in tight. This mixed with his long trench
cloak flowing over his body presents
him to be very mysterious. As opposed
to other films who present the disability
in a positive light, or to be innocent, the
elephant man poster instead makes
him seem aloof which a sign of danger
is. This could be avoided with simple
techniques and angles, but it ignored
and instead shows him to be fearful.

The title of this poster is outstanding and

prominent against the saturated background.
The font is similar to a horror theme, with all
capitalised letters. This would make it seem as
if the elephant man is a monster, and
something to be feared. This is offensive since
upon watching the film it is clear that he is far
from a monster, and infects a courteous and
well educated man. The fact the titles
conforms to using his insulting name instead
of his actual name Joseph Merrick is also
insulting since it further enhances the defining

The background is very intense, with

transitioning colours. It has a
background of algebraic expressions
against this calm backdrop. These assets
have connotations of intelligence and
sophistication. This shows disability in a
positive light, since it moves away from
the ridiculing and stereotyping of lots of
disabled people, and shows them
instead to be intelligent and

Here is a very bold heading, stating the film is a

masterful work of perfection. This title alone
entices the viewer to watch the film, because of
the amazing praise it has received. This coupled
with the controversial subject matter or disability,
and the desire to not offend S.Hawking by poorly
portraying his life in the biography narrative, will
make for a very moving production. Heart
breaking artistry is a very interesting term to use
since it juxtaposes one another. The term heart
breaking is very emotive and would imply the film
is going to be emotional. Having this emotive word

Stephen ( Harry
Redmayne ) is stood in
a confident posture,
holding the face of his
partner. Dressed in a
blazer, he is clearly to
be shown of an upper
class style of life. His
overall persona
presented here is
interesting since it
does not show him to
be disabled, which is
the main premise of
the film. Instead it
opts to show him prior
his diagnosis. This
could show that the
designer thought it
would be more
aesthetically pleasing
to the viewer to show
him at this point in

The bottom section of the poster shows a tall

building with spires and Victorian decoration. This
shows the viewer straight away that the building is
more than likely English and not modern. For the
most part these buildings are in places of wealth
within the U.K. This further reinforces the idea that
the character in the poster is both wealthy, and or
sophisticated. This mixed with his overall
presentation contradicts the negative connotations
of the disabled person within the media, and helps
the general stereotype of disabled people within
films, shows and entertainment.

The title is one of the

main focal points in
the poster, showing
the title of the film.
This automatically
shows the viewer what
the film is called, so
they can peruse
further interest in the
film. The font of the
title is very bold, with
stress by caps on the
words theory and
everything. This is
done for both
formatting purposes,
since it looks good to
the viewer. As well as
the fact that the
theory of everything is
a well-known book
published by Stephen
Hawking, so people
who are familiar with
the book, or have read
it, will be interested to
see the film sharing
the same name.
The woman who Eddie is holding
would be considered very sexually
attractive. She is shows to be stood in
a venerable stance, gazing concerned
at Harry Redmayne. He is offering her
support by holding her. This shows
that the disabled person has the
potential to not only support
themselves, but help and support
others. This too helps conflict the
common consensus of disabled
people as a whole .
