Haddonfield Memorial High

School celebrated the graduates
of the senior class of 2014-2015 on
Thursday, June 18 at the HMHS
stadium. One hundred and ninety
seniors in caps and gowns took
their final steps as high school
students and began new steps to
their next journey in life.
On that day, students, administrators, families and friends were
addressed by the class of 2015
valedictorian Ryan Ciemny, salutatorian Elle Butler Basner and
class president Julia Fonshell,
giving hope and inspiration to the
class of 2015 for the future.

Mabel Kay Senior Center a wish

come true for area seniors

What started out as a wish for
area seniors to find a haven has
become a reality in the Mabel Kay
Senior Center. The little center
has become a place for area seniors to enjoy themselves, while
making friends and a second family.
MKSC, a non-profit organization located at 24 Walnut St., is
Haddonfields senior citizen center, offering classes, programs,
events and more all for area seniors.
Watching it grow from almost
15 years ago, where there were
just a few programs, and watching it develop into a haven for
area seniors is my biggest joy,
Director Dory Mann said.
The MKSC was started when

Mabel Kay, a Haddonfield resident who lived on Lake Street, donated her house in her will to the
borough, wishing that it be a
haven for Haddonfield seniors.
Her house was used for a few
years, but was too small. So in
1994, the borough sold Kays
house and bought the building
the MKSC is at today, dedicating
it to Kay.
When it was first started, the
MKSC was used as a hospitality
house for seniors and not many
things were going on. Then, the
part-time director at the time
gave Mann, who has been with
the MKSC for 15 years, the opportunity to get as many programs
as it could so the center would
truly be a haven for seniors in the
area.
Now, the MKSC offers a plethora of classes, programs and

events to area seniors who range

in age from early 60s to 98.
I take pride in MKSC. It was
Mabel Kays dream that seniors
have a place to go, but this house
wasnt used to capacity, and now
is used in full. I think it has done
what she wanted it to do, and Im
proud of that, Mann said.
Seniors have the opportunity
to take exercise classes, including
cardio, tai chi, light aerobics and
line dancing. Every instructor
has taught for more than 30 years
and has geared the classes specifically toward all seniors, both
those who sit and those who
stand, making it stand out from
other senior centers who usually
accommodate one. The classes
are held once or twice a week at
the Tarditi Commons, with a

event is July 1
The Haddonfield Professionals
Committee of the Partnership for
Haddonfield will host its July networking event on Wednesday,
July 1 at The British Chip Shop,
146 Kings Highway East, at 5:30

William J. Nolan Jr.
June 14, 2015
William (Bill) J. Nolan Jr., a
Haddonfield resident for many
years, formerly of Philadelphia,
and communicant of St. Rose of
Lima, Haddon Heights, passed
away peacefully in Cherry Hill on
June 14 at the age of 89. Bill enjoyed the comfort and loving care
of many at The Manor and St.
Marys in his last years.
Bill was the beloved son of
Elizabeth (Marley) and William J.
Nolan, Sr. of Philadelphia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dearly loved
brother, James P. Nolan II. Bill
was loving uncle of Sheilagh
Guyer (Neal) of Thomaston,
Maine, James P. Nolan III (Christine) of Haddon Township, Maureen Close (Jonathan) of Garrison, N.Y., and Chris Nolan (Joy) of
Randolph, Vt. He delighted in seeing his great nieces and nephews
grow up, reveling in their endeavors: Patrick (Marthe) and Claire
Guyer, Darragh and James P.
Nolan IV, Simon and Peter Close,
Christen and C.J. Nolan.
Easily amused, Bill was greatly
entertained by the antics of his
great, great niece, Rosi Guyer.
Affectionately known as Will

to his family, he proudly served in

the U.S. Army during WWII. Following discharge, he attended
music school on the GI Bill. He
was crazy for all types of
music: jazz, swing, classical and
liturgical. A talented pianist and
organist, Bill played professionally in the 40s and 50s in Philadelphia and New York City. Bill enjoyed the camaraderie of his colleagues at the Wheatland Tube
Company in the Philadelphia office, and later in Collingswood, retiring after many years of dedicated service. Always a gentleman, Bills family and friends will
greatly miss his sweet disposition, his ready smile, willingness
to tell a story, his quick wit, his
propensity for puns or his funnies, his lifelong love for his old
Logan neighborhood and parish
and his undying dedication to the
Phillies-no matter the score.
Bills mass of Christian burial
was Monday, June 22 at St. Rose of
Lima RC Church. Interment was
at Holy Cross Cemetery in
Philadelphia. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests contributions
in Bills name to Sacred Heart
Free Home of Incurable Cancer,

of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and

Patience not panic when
it comes to Bancroft
The relationship between Haddonfield
and Bancroft has had its challenges over
the years, but none more so than the latest
chapter that brought us Recovery Centers
of America and its plan to develop an alcohol/drug rehabilitation facility near two
schools and in the midst of a compact residential neighborhood.
RCA's announcement caught residents
by surprise. Up until that time, Bancroft
had been expected to approach our borough commissioners with an offer before
agreeing to sell its property to a third party.
Instead, what has ensued is a circus with
its own parade of rumors in mass emails,
the local press and social media some apparently true and others not regarding
RCAs purchase price for the property, the

boroughs alleged right of first refusal, etc.

This past April, the developer behind
RCA, J. Brian O'Neill, suggested at a town
meeting that local residents can do little, if
anything, legally or otherwise, to stop his
project. Unfortunately, ONeills claim, like
many other claims that he made during his
presentation, is full of holes.
One need not have grown up watching
Court TV to know that there is no such
thing as a slam-dunk case.
Perhaps ONeill truly believes our zoning board and courts are pushovers. Or
that the attorney recently hired by our
school board for this matter, who has successfully fought similar projects elsewhere,
is a lightweight. Or that none of the hundreds of attorneys who live and/or work in
our town, including those who reside near
the property, will step up to oppose the project.
Or maybe ONeill is just giving us the

hard sell. Either way, I would urge my fellow residents to be patient.

After all, time is on Haddonfield residents side. Yes, Bancroft and RCA apparently have an agreement for the property,
which no one else appears to have seen.
The mere existence of an agreement, however, does not mean that RCA can afford a
long, protracted legal battle, particularly
since the battle could end poorly for RCA.
RCA must produce results and answer to
its investors such as Deerfield Management.
Moreover, Haddonfield ultimately has a
trump card in the form of eminent domain. The Bancroft property can be taken
for legitimate public purposes subject to
the property owner receiving reasonable
compensation. Hence, there is no need for
our commissioners to rush headlong into a

Fathers memories live on for grandchildren

I will share with you why my
dad, Ralph Spetsas, would have
been great. Simply put he would
have been a shining example of
what a grandparent should be.
My dad passed away before he
had the opportunity to become a
grandpop.
There is no doubt in my mind
that he would have been his
grandchildrens biggest cheerleader. No matter what, he would
have had their back.
My dad would have been delighted to be a part of his grandchildrens life. He would not have
missed a single event from
sports to concerts to academics. I

know this to be true because he

truly rejoiced in the accomplishments of my brothers and me. He
never missed a swim meet, a
wrestling match, a baseball game,
a track meet or any other activity
we showed a modicum of interest
in. In fact, sometimes he even
showed up to practices, much to
my embarrassment, but never interfered.
My father died much too
young, pictured here on my wedding day, but for those who got to
know him they would unanimously agree he was a big man
with an even bigger heart.
Thankfully, his grandchildren
know that their Grandpop
Ralph is looking down and
cheering them on.

Stage Kidz summer camp kicks off July 6

Would you like your kids to do
something truly entertaining this
summer? Haddonfield Plays and
Players is offering Stage Kidz, a
summer camp program that
helps build confidence in children of any age through the theater experience.
Students are grouped by age
and theater experience, though
no experience is required.

Through classes such as character development, dance technique

training, vocal performance and
emotional memory, they learn
from four experienced adult
counselors who hold college degrees in the discipline they are
teaching. On the final day of the
program, the campers will perform a big production on the
main stage.

The Freeholder
Board will host the
3rd annual Camden
Waterfront
Freedom Festival
and Fourth of July
fireworks display
on Saturday, July 4,
2015. The festival is
set to run from 5:00
to 9:30 p.m. and will
include concerts, a veterans tribute and conclude with a spectacular,
world-class
fireworks
display over the Delaware River.
We expect more than 150,000
visitors to Wiggins Waterfront
Park this summer for events
ranging from great entertainment like the Fourth of July Fireworks and Sunset Jazz Series to
activities such as waterfront yoga
and workout Wednesdays. My
colleagues on the Freeholder
Board and I know how much residents enjoy the outdoors, and we
strive to continually improve
Camden County's parks so that
they provide maximum entertainment and fun for the whole
family.
The Freedom Festival will feature a variety of fun activities for
children to enjoy, including jugglers, face painting and inflatable
bounce houses. For adults, the
festival will also feature a Beer
Garden, with local brewers, distillers and vineyards like Flying
Fish, Cooper River Distillers and
wine from Sharrott. Free event
parking will be provided at the
Waterfront, courtesy of the City
of Camden Parking Authority beginning at 4 p.m.
The Independence Day festivities begin with the dedication of
the Camden County Veterans
Stage and an American Music
Tribute to our veterans by the
Philharmonic of Southern New

Haddonfield United has long
supported reasonable and sustainable development and preservation of the Bancroft property,
and we have opposed the RCA
proposal from the get-go. Therefore, while I can comprehend the
sentiments of some neighbors
who have suggested that our commissioners overpay significantly
for the property to the tune of
many millions of dollars, such
suggestions will only succeed in
giving Bancroft and RCA the
sense they have leverage over us,
which they simply do not possess.
If our commissioners eventually purchase the Bancroft property
for an appropriate price, every
resident of Haddonfield will bear
the financial impact, and therefore the future of every resident
must be taken into account.
Again, patience and not panic
is the order of the day.

things about Haddonfield, mainly
the friends I have here, but I am
very excited to take the next step
in our journey through life. I
think HMHS has been a great environment to learn and grow up
in, so I feel we are all very prepared to go out and conquer the
world. Our class is very tightknit, so we will definitely enjoy
these next couple months together, but I know we will all go on to
do great things in college and
have lots of fun.
Basner: I am excited to begin a
new life of freedom and more opportunities, but will miss the
comfort of home in Haddonfield
and the strong sense of community.
Fonshell: It is definitely a bittersweet feeling. I am very excited to
be starting a brand new chapter

in my life,
however it's
very difficult
to leave a town
and friends I
have known
for over 12
years for the
first time.

How do you
CIEMNY
feel
about
being named valedictorian/salutatorian/class president?
Ciemny: I just found out yesterday that I was the valedictorian,
and I honestly didn't really know
that I was going to be valedictorian as class rank isn't a big focus at
HMHS throughout the four years.
As a result, I was very excited
when I was named valedictorian.
HMHS being the great school that
it is emphasizes a competitive academic environment, and therefore there are many great candidates, so I was very honored to be
named valedictorian.

Basner: I feel very honored to

be this year's salutatorian. I know
that the top few people in terms of
class rank all have GPAs that are
very close, and there are others
that would be deserving of recognition.
Fonshell: This class is very special and I am truly proud and
thankful to be a representative for
such a supportive and incredibly
kind group of people. Being class
president for the class of 2015

been the best experience.
The Sun: Where are you going
to college? What are you majoring
in? What is your dream job?
Ciemny: I will be attending the
University of Notre Dame next
year. More specifically, I will be
studying at the Mendoza College
of Business. I'm not positive exactly what my major will be, but
it likely will be finance with a possible minor in political science.
Obviously, my interests and plans
may change over the course of
the next four years, but I hope to
go to grad school to get my MBA
and get a job in private equity.
Basner: I am attending Stony
Brook University in Stony Brook,
N.Y., and I will be majoring in biochemistry and/or mathematics. I
am considering cryptology, statistics and research for my future
career.
Fonshell: I will be majoring in
political science and attending
the University of South Carolina.
I hope to one day be working in
D.C.
The Sun: Can you tell me a little
about your speech?
Ciemny: My speech focuses
mainly on the bright futures we
all have. The message I am trying
to convey is that we all have the
tools and ability to do great things
in the next chapter of our lives, so

it is up to us to go out and get

what we want. I use the following
quote by William Jennings Bryan
to help convey this message:
Destiny is no matter of chance.
It is a matter of choice. It is not a
thing to be waited for, it is a thing
to be achieved. I lived in Switzerland during my freshmen and
sophomore year, so I also touch
on what I learned from that experience. And I spend a little time
discussing the importance of
character and integrity when
going after our goals. Again, the
overall message is that we have to
give it our all in the upcoming
years and go after what we want
because we all can and will do
great things.
Basner: In my speech, I aimed
to remind the class of 2015 of our
strong support system between
classmates and the community. I
also wanted to inspire us to always aim higher and reach for
our goals and dreams.
Fonshell: My speech will mostly
be talking about the class of 2015's
experiences during their time at
HMHS. I will be talking about
many of the class' achievements
as well as talking about how close
our class has really become.
The Sun: What kind of message
do you want to leave your fellow
graduates with?
Ciemny: I answered this somewhat in the previous question as
my speech essentially is the message I want to leave my classmates, but I end my speech with a

quote by Zac Brown, which is:

"You get what you give." I want
my classmates to give it their all
for the next four years because I
believe they will get great results
and do great things in return.
Basner: I am proud of all of us
and our accomplishments. Receiving an award is certainly very
noteworthy and honorable, but
there isn't an award for everything, and it isn't all about the titles. We are all talented, motivated and ready for success.
Fonshell: I hope my fellow graduates leave feeling proud of their
time at Haddonfield. I also hope it
encourages people to stay connected with their classmates and
this Haddonfield community as
they move away and enter the
real world.
The Sun: Whats your favorite
memory youve had being in the
Haddonfield Public Schools?
Ciemny: Picking one memory is
very difficult, but the highlight of
Haddonfield Public Schools for
me is the people. Obviously, all
the students have been a huge
part of my life from the beginning, but the teachers and administrators are really what makes
Haddonfield Public Schools such
a great environment to learn in
and grow up in. The teachers are
dedicated to helping you succeed
while also teaching in a way that
makes us, the students, enjoy
learning and makes us strive to

I really think we have the premier exercise programs here.
Each instructor has such a history in the area and geared their
classes specifically for seniors;
(the classes can) be appreciated
sitting or standing, which is
amazing, Mann said.
The center also offers a painting class for seniors over 55 for
everyone from art teachers to
non-painters on Thursdays from
9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
for $2 for residents and $5 for nonresidents. Many of those who
have participated in the class
have won awards and contests
with their art, according to
Mann. Computer Club, for individuals who are computer literate, meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m.
Bingo and bridge are held on alternating Tuesdays, which are
two of the programs seniors
enjoy the most, according to
Mann.
For Mann, Friday is her favorite day of the week. It is the
day she really gets to be hands on
and interact with the seniors.
Every Friday, seniors meet for
lunch and for a special event.
Sometimes it is bingo or remember whens, when seniors talk

about their families and the past,

but other times it hosts a speaker
or entertainer. This event is free
and offers either pizza or sandwiches for seniors to enjoy, while
also enjoying a fun activity.
MKSC also hosts four major
annual events each year that invite all area seniors to come and
participate in. Fifty to 100 seniors
come to each event. During the
summer, it has its Beginning of
Summer Picnic, which was held
on June 6, and its End of Summer
Picnic, which will be held on
Sept. 5 this year. The two other
events are its St. Pattys Day Dinner and Thanksgiving Day Dinner, which is a full dinner. Each
costs $3 for resident and non-resident seniors.
MKSC isnt just used for senior
programs. It is used as a library,
meeting house and cooling center.
MKSC hosts a library of more
than 800 books for seniors, which
requires no sign outs. Seniors can
come in and take a book on their
vacation for a month or so and
bring it back when theyre done.
MKSC is also a cooling center for
Camden County that anyone can
stop in and cool down on hot days.
If you have to get out of the
sun, come in here and get a cool
drink and just cool off, Mann
said.
Also at the MKSC, there is a
bin for collecting non-perishable
goods for dire need seniors in
Camden County. As little as it is,
MKSC is one of the largest con-

tributors to the senior food shelf.

Anyone can stop in and drop off
some food items in the bin at
MKSC during its hours, from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mann wanted to be sure it wasnt forgotten that the MKSC
wouldnt be where it is today
without borough officials and volunteers. The borough supports
many of the programs at MKSC
and volunteers help to run the
programs and keep them alive
and going. Volunteers range from
groups of students to individual
volunteers.
For the future, Mann, along
with the MKSC Board of
Trustees, would like to obtain
grants to improve the center, as
the building needs work and
maintenance.

Basner: It's hard to choose just
one; I've had many great experiences here. One of my favorites
was Mr. Burns' speech to our calculus class on the last day of
school for seniors. I also loved

putting on the first annual HMHS

Shakespeare Festival with the
help of our school's Shakespeare
Troupe led by Ms. Dickstein.
Also, every time I meet with Mr.
Holman, he is helpful and insightful. I cannot say enough great
things about him.
Fonshell: My favorite memory
at the Haddonfield Public Schools
would have to be spirit weeks at
the high school. The spirit weeks

each year have united our class so

much and gave us an opportunity
to work hard for causes we were
really passionate about, such as
donating cans for the can drive
and raising funds for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, JDRF and
Unstoppable, a charity in honor
of our classmate Colin.
Ciemny: I would like to say I'm
very thankful for the experiences
and opportunities I have been
given that have been the key to
my success. My family, friends
and the Haddonfield school system have all been a huge help in
my academic achievements. And
finally I would like to say congratulations to all of my classmates
and good luck to them in the
years to come.
Basner: Thank you to the
HMHS faculty, community and to
my parents for enriching the experience of the students and
preparing us to unlock our potentials for great things ahead.
Fonshell: I would just like to
thank my family, teachers and
classmates for always supporting
me and for making my time as a
