Jure Grando or Giure Grando (? - 1656) was a person from Istria (at that time divided between Republic
of Venice, for most part, and Austrian Empire; in today Croatia) who may have been the rst real person described as a vampire in historical records.[1] He was referred to as a strigoi, trigon or trigun, a local word for
something resembling a vampire and a warlock.[2]
After some exorcism prayers, the one villager, Stipan Milai, took a saw and sawed the head o. As soon as the
saw tore his skin, the vampire screamed and blood started
to ow from the cut, and soon the whole grave was full of
blood. According to legend, peace nally returned to the
region after Jures decapitation.
