CAROL BOVE

Description of the Artist’s work:

Carol Bove has becom e known for elegant sculptures and installations that double as highly
personalized archives of a period known to the collective im agination as the Sixties. She
investigates the philosophies and aesthetics of the l960s and early 70s, forging m editative
environm ents designed for listening, reading, and looking. Her installations while m inim alist
in form , evoke the personal. M ore recently she has forged past this specific tim e period to
closely look at a m ore general investigation into “m odernity”.

Description of the work com m issioned:

The Night Sky Over … series of work is com posed of hundreds bronze rods suspended from
the ceiling in m im icry of the astrological configuration. The arrangem ent of the rods recre-
ates a special celestial event. They align with the stars congregating over the space in which
the installation takes place at a designated tim e. The work reverses the conventional rela-
tionship between hum an beings and the cosm os, between interiority and exteriority. Here the
universe is scaled to the body and by extension contained within that which it norm ally
contains: the hotel is becom ing quite literally a m icrocosm .
The artist, with that work, orchestrates colors, form s, m aterials in order to generate a subtle
rhythm , a sense of variety within harm ony and infuses a sensuousness to the space.

Carol Bove proposal

Burj Dubai 122 FL Restaurant & Bar Lounge Project / Art Program

The as yet to be titled Night Sky sculpture will be very sim ilar in m aterials and appearance to
The Night Sky over Dusseldorf, June 22, 2032 (Please see im age 1).
The sculpture will hang from a 12ft x 10ft wooden support attached to the ceiling directly above
the stair well. This support should be designed and fabricated on site by the
building architects/engineers. It should visually blend into the existing ceiling and be capable of
supporting 1000 lbs. (conservative estim ate).

The sculpture itself will consist of approxim ately 450, 8ft lengths of architectural bronze rods
hanging from gold plated bronze wire. Each rod will saddle the m id point of
individual lengths of wire that will attach at two points on the ceiling platform . (Please see
im age 2). The wires will attach to the ceiling platform with bronze screws fabricated by the
studio.

The overall size of the sculpture will be 12.37ft x 10ft x 6ft. The bronze rods them selves will
articulate a volum e of 8ft x 10ft x 6ft. This volum e of rods will hang 4.37ft below the ceiling.
(Please see im age 3).

The star chart that determ ines the pattern and placem ent of the bronze corresponds to the night
sky directly above the piece at a specific date and tim e as yet to be determ ined.

The cost of this piece will be $70,000. This price includes production expenses incurred by Carol
Bove’s studio. This price does not include installation expenses and expenses
related to preparing the site such as: crating and shipping the piece; design and fabrication of
the 12ft x 10ft wooden support that the piece hangs from ; air fare and accom m odations for Carol
Bove’s assistant to oversee the installation; building specialists that m ay be required; and all
other costs that m ight be associated with preparing the site or installing the sculpture.

Carol Bove’s studio has worked well in the past with architects, designers, and curators to adjust
the details of installations to m eet the dem ands of unique environm ents/sites.
The final height and placem ent of the piece is subject to discussion between Carol Bove, and the
architects, designers, and engineers involved in the project.

Before determ ining the final height and position of the sculpture, the artist would like to have a
m eeting with the architects and/or designers in order to finalize these details in a way that m eets
the practical dem ands and aesthetic expectations of all the involved parties.

COREY M CCORKLE

Description of the artist’ s practice

The Am erican artist Corey M cCorkle is a site specific artist interested in the terrain linking
art, architecture and design. His practice consists of m eticulously crafted objects, on the
one hand, and precise architectural interventions on the other. The result is always situated
at the crossroads between architecture, design and craftsm anship. M any of M cCorkle’s dis-
tinctive objects and installation, however often draw their inspiration from psychedelic,
Utopian, ecological and esoteric sources. As such, they operate a precise critique of the
am bivalent nature of design in our contem porary society and its even m ore am biguous rela-
tionship with art.

Description of the work com m issioned:

W idth of Circle (2003) is a tondo m ade in a wooden wall placed directly in front of the
windows. M ade from round cross sections of bam boo, and held in place by tension only, it
em bodies a literal translation of “design under pressure.” According to a m aterialistic m odel
of thinking, style is m otivated by the technologies and the m aterials used for construction.
Hence, style is the abstract product of the best technical practice in a genre. Ornam ent is
the reflection, a sym bolic stress, of its m aterial and structural logic. Looking onto the
exterior through this rosette window is as if looking into a prism of incom ing light.
