Grand Knights Report

It has been another busy month since the last edition of the Knightly News. Over the weekend of
October 31st and November 1st we conducted a membership drive at St. Theresa. The following weekend,
November 7th and 8th, we held a membership drive at St. Thomas. On November 7th we hosted the
Regional Soccer Challenge. Also on November 7th Brian Peterson and Julie Tragasz coordinated our
Spaghetti Dinner. The food was fantastic including spaghetti with meatballs, Fettuccini Alfredo, tossed
salad, garlic bread, and a dessert table that was incredible. Thank you to everyone who participated –
either by assisting, or by attending. After our business meeting on November 9th, Stewart Tesnow, Sr.
conducted our annual turkey raffle. On November 15th we held a Communion Breakfast with mass at 8:30
AM at St. Theresa followed by breakfast at the Knights Café at Holy Family in Inverness. We had a
great turnout with 42 people signed up.

On November 10th, at the invitation of Jim Hoffman, I attended a Court of Honor Ceremony for
Boy Scout Troop 357 at Little City. A Court of Honor Ceremony is a time to recognize all the work each
Scout and the Troop has done over the past months. Each scout was recognized for his participation. In
addition, the troop displayed the awards they had won over the past year, including summer camp at
Camp Napowan in Wisconsin. Our council supports Troop 357 through our MR / LD drive. It made me
proud to see the joy on the faces of these special people and know that our council helps make their
activities possible.

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is this week and Christmas is right around the corner. At
this time we should all thank the Lord for the many blessing that He has bestowed on us. I wish my
Brother Knights and your families a Happy Thanksgiving – don’t eat too much.

God Bless
Jim Killigrew, Grand Knight

First Degree Exemplification
We will hold our next First Degree Exemplification on Monday, December 7th, in the Lower Dolan Center
at St. Theresa. The exemplification will start at 8:00 PM. December 7th is the vigil of the Feast of the
Immaculate Conception. St. Theresa usually has a Holy Day Vigil Mass at 7:00 PM. We set the start time
of the exemplification at 8:00 so as not to conflict with the Vigil Mass.

December Business Meeting

Our December Business Meeting will be on December 14 at St. Thomas at 7:30 PM. We will be
meeting at the school in meeting rooms 1 & 2. Knights should use the West side entrance, closest to the
playfields. Please make a note of the location for this meeting.

Christmas Wreaths
The trucking company that is delivering our wreaths has set the
delivery for Tuesday, November 24th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with the most
likely delivery time between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM.

The wreaths will be distributed after masses on the weekends of

November 28th and 29th and December 5th and 6th from the St. Theresa parish
garage. We ordered additional items that will be available for sale at these
times:

22” wreaths: 23
Centerpiece: 4
Cross: 4
Cane: 1
Mailbox swag: 5

Our Christmas wreath chairman, Rick Deyhle, needs assistance unloading the truck and ensuring
that the wreath count is accurate. Rick also needs help distributing the wreaths. If you can assist with
unloading the truck or distributing the wreaths, please call Rick at (312) 925-0170.

Children’s Christmas Party

The annual Children’s Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 6th
from 1:30 to 4:00 pm in the Lower Dolan at St. Theresa. There will be games,
refreshments, and of course, a visit from Santa Claus. It is open to all Council
members’ children and grandchildren.

Cookies and pastries will be needed. We are looking for help with setup
at 10:00 AM, working the games at 1:30 PM, and a clean-up crew afterwards.
Please contact Santa’s helpers (Mary or Lou at 847-991-1562) if you can assist.

Adult Christmas Party
The adult Christmas party will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 in the lower Dolan Center
of St. Theresa. A cocktail hour will start at 6:00 PM followed by dinner at 7:00 PM. Admission is $13.00
each person; also, bring a $10.00 gift for the gift exchange.

Get in the Christmas spirit by enjoying a festive evening among friends along
with great food and spirits. There will also be a few raffles to enhance your
fun.

See the party insert for more details. Call Jim Ciciora (847-991-2049) for
reservations.
We also need volunteers to setup Saturday afternoon and to clean up afterwards.

A GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT AVAILABLE NOW!

Pierre Zermatten
Nativity Magnet (6”x 6”) - $5
Don’t forget to pick up your nativity magnet. With all of the distractions we
face during His season, we are trying to get more and more magnets seen in
traffic and parking lots to remind people the meaning of CHRISTmas!

This will be available for purchase after all masses this weekend at St.
Theresa along with our Christmas Wreaths. Contact Pierre Zermatten with
the Knights of Columbus at 847-358-8648 or 847-540-3719 (w). Proceeds
support local charities, religious vocations and respect life initiatives.

It’s OK to say Merry Christmas to me Buttons

Merry Christmas Button (approximately 2 ¼“) - $2
The phrase, Merry Christmas, is not heard as much as it used to be. Today,
we hear Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings rather than Merry
Christmas. While it is important to show sensitivity to non-Christians, it is
just as important that we remind people of the reason for the season.

Buttons will be available for purchase after all masses this weekend at St.
Theresa along with our Christmas Wreaths. Proceeds support charitable
causes.

Vocations Raffle
Jim Ciciora
The raffle books are arriving almost daily in my mail. Keep up the good work! I am sending
the 111 books I received so far to the Illinois State Council. My hope is that by getting some
books there early and some books later, we can get our tickets in the right positions to win
several prizes! The drawing will be January 2, 2010.

We know there is an urgent need for vocations to the religious life. This raffle is
an easy way to help those who are answering God’s call. The funds we raise help seminarians, postulants

and novices. Not only does the Illinois State Council help these young people, but our Council does also
by giving $500 scholarships to deserving candidates. Last year we were able to award three
scholarships.

Please send your completed raffle books and money to me as early as possible. Make any checks
payable to Knights of Columbus #4977. My address is

Jim Ciciora
1146 Clearwater Court
Palatine, IL 60067

My phone number is 847-991-2049 if you have any questions. I have extra books if anyone would
like more. Remember, “You can’t win if you don’t get in”.

Knights of the Month

Congratulations to our November Knight of the
Month, Brian Peterson. Brian was recognized for his
work chairing the Spaghetti Dinner and his
participation in the kitchen at the Pancake Breakfast.

Brian has chaired our Spaghetti Dinners for several

years. In addition, he is always willing to lend a hand.
He has been involved with our Pancake Breakfasts,
Lenten Fish Fries, and Council Picnics.

Again, congratulations to Brian on this well deserved

recognition.

Jim Killigrew and Brian Peterson

Star Council
At the November Business Meeting our District
Deputy, Tony Beaudette, presented the council with
the plague for the Star Council Award. This
represents all of the hard work for 2008-2009 by
Holy Ghost Council under the leadership of Past Grand
Knight Danny Kliarsky. Only a small percentage of
councils receive the Star Council Award for meeting
their established goals.

Unfortunately, Danny was not able to attend the

meeting. I talked with Danny prior to the meeting and
passed along his thoughts. The Star Council Awards is
the council’s award; it is not his award. He thanked all
Tony Beaudette and Jim Killigrew

the members who recruited new members, which allowed us to meet our membership goal. He also
thanked Dave Peterson for all his hard work in signing up insurance members.
Congratulations Danny and Holy Ghost Council. Membership is the lifeblood of the organization,
so please recruit a new member so that they can experience doing God’s work

Catholics Come Home

Deacon Larry Schumacher spoke to us at the
November Business Meeting about Catholics Come
Home. Catholics Come Home is a program being run by
the Office for Evangelization of the Archdiocese of
Chicago to welcome fallen away catholics back to the
practice of their faith. As part of the program, TV
commercials will air on all the major networks from
December 16th through January 24th. Larry showed a
few of the commercials.

Larry is requesting our assistance to man tables in the

gathering area at St. Theresa after masses while the
program is running. Further details will be in the
Deacon Larry Schumacher December Knightly News.

Council Shirts
Jim Ciciora
Several years ago a number of us purchased
shirts that identify us as members of Knights of
Columbus Holy Ghost Council #4977. Several
members have asked me how they could get a shirt.
Our Financial Secretary has identified a source that
can make the shirts for us again.

These casual shirts have the Knights of

Columbus logo with Holy Ghost Council #4977 on
them. The cost for the shirt is $22 for small,
medium, large or Xlarge sizes. The 2Xlarge shirt will
have a slightly higher cost of $24.

You can also have your name sown on the shirt

below the logo for an additional $3 bringing the cost
for most shirts to $25 ($27 for 2XL). The shirt color is sand with gray trim and yellow lettering. I am
wearing the shirt in the photo.

If you would like to purchase a shirt and did not put your name on the list at the November
meeting, please send me an E-mail at jimcici@comcast.net with your name, shirt size (S M L XL 2XL) and
any name you want on the shirt. That name is optional. You may also call me at 847-991-2049 if you
would like to place an order by phone or if you have any questions.

All-Night Eucharistic Adoration
Pierre Zermatten
Don’t forget the Knights of Columbus, along with St. Theresa Respect Life Group, sponsor an
All-Night Eucharistic Adoration on the first Friday of every month at St. Theresa Day Chapel.
The purpose is to provide a terrific opportunity for personal spiritual growth while praying to
defend the sanctity of life in the process.

The upcoming first Friday is December 4th

Starts Friday at 8:45 am and continues until the 8:00 am Saturday Mass.

Whether you can only stop by for a minute of whether you can spend a whole hour or more
in the physical presence of our Lord, we invite you to join us in silent adoration, reflection and
prayers. Please call Leo Miklius (847-397-4435) or Pierre Zermatten (847-358-8648) if you can
commit an hour.
