Preface
The world is forever changing, but the events that have taken place since 1989
have been particularly dramatic. There have been border changes, country names
changes and technological innovations, all of which have contributed to altering
the traditional depiction of the country in shape and size. But the entertainment
taste remains the same as ever. The Bollywood is foreseeing futures after the
success of the recent hits like “Ghajini”, “Rab ne bana di jodi”, “Slumdog
Millionaire”, “3 Idiots”.

In this changing environment, I therefore selected this topic for the research, as I
do have a keen interest in this industry. The glamour of this industry has also
touched my mind. So, I was excited to be a part of it.

The research project has been undertaken to understand the history, production
process and determine the recent changes which have been changing the industry
rapidly.

I hope this research work will work as the guideline for the related personnel’s and
the organizations. I still don’t presume that this work is the last word and all the
suggestions are welcomed henceforth.

Introduction
India has the biggest film industry in the world producing around 1,000 films a
year. Most of these films are produced in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay).
The most popular films to come from Mumbai are classed as Bollywood films.
Bollywood films are not just a form of entertainment. Many believe that
Bollywood films depict the importance of Indian tradition and culture.
What makes Bollywood films unique and popular in many aspects is the element
of the song and dance numbers that appear in nearly every film. A Bollywood film
is rarely made without singing and dancing. In the past, some films have contained
up to 70 songs. However, these days, you are more likely to find around 5-7 songs
still creeping up in a Bollywood film. The musical numbers are not just part of a
film, they often act as marketing tools and promote the film itself.
Another aspect that sells Bollywood, not just to Indians but many others abroad
(Bollywood has audiences as far as the UK, USA, China and Russia)is their ability
to produce colourful, glamorous and elaborate films. Everthing in Bollywood is
larger than life and over the top. From emotions to outfits, storylines to locations,
everything that would appear surreal and abnormal somehow becomes real and the
norm.
If you have never watched a Bollywood film before, then the list below should be a
good place to start:

Sholay, Mother India ,Devdas, Hum apke hani kaun, Dil waale dulhaniya le
jayenge ,Ghajini and many more to be listed.

Rationale

Bollywood industry is one of the major forex earners for India. On the other hand
US market is the largest market for Indian movies due to its huge demand. For this
reason I am undergoing this research project.
Objective

The objective for this research project are as under:

• To study the Export potential of Bollywood Movies to US.
• To study the major steps taken by the Indian Govt. for boosting its exports.
• To identify the opportunities for India to become largest exporter of
Bollywood Movies to US.

Methodology

The entire research work will based on the secondary data. Desk research will be
the methodology used in the completion of the research work. The information is
to be collected from the books, journals, newsletter, internet, company officials and
websites. Though Internet and telephone will also be used for the collection of the
data.

My research project will be an outcome of secondary research carried by me based

on electronic media.

Limitations
1. Based on secondary sources of information only.
2. Lack of proper and detailed information about the Bollywood industry.
3. Insufficiency of getting in contact with the personnel’s of the industry.
4. Could not visit the bollywood embassies.
5. Small amount of export from India.
6. Insufficiency of data available through various medium.
7. The source of information was only electronic media and reference books.
8. The analysis of the data was not available.
