Uses
The plants flowers are
used as Leis in Hawaii
and also for other
ornamental and
decorative uses.
Species Name
Strongylodon macrobotrys; Jade
Vine or Emerald Creeper; Called
Tayabak in the Philippines.
Appearance
Striking blue-green clawed
flowers. The flowers color ranges
from aquamarine to jade. The
stems are glossy and purplish
green when young then hardens
into dark brown finely peeling
bark. The plants leaves are dark
green, trifoliate - meaning it has a
compound leaf of three leaflets,
and can grow up 12cm long. The
flowers themselves can grow up
to 90cm long.
Endemic Species
The Jade Vine originates from the
Philippines meaning it is endemic to the
Philippines. Grows best in neutral to
acidic soils. It thrives in habitats such as
damp tropical rain forests, ravines, and
rivers. However, its natural habitat is in
jeopardy due to deforestation and
general degradation.
Biological Niche
According to edenproject.com, These
flowers are pollinated by bats, which are
drawn to the glowing luminosity of the
flowers at twilight. The bats drink the
nectar that is produced by the flowers
while they brush the top of their heads
against the pollen. As the bat moves on
to another flower, the pollen that the bat
accumulates is left behind on that
flowers female part. This is how
pollination occurs. With successful
pollination, the Jade Vine will be able to
produce fruits that have the capability to
grow up to the size of melons.
