Reflection of interview session:

The interview presents the idea that every person is distinctive in their own way over which they
keep exploring over time to reach their set goals. The purpose of this report is to analyze my
existing skills to interact with clients and to reinforce them for my professional development.
This report helps me highlight core areas of my existing skills which need to be rectified so that I
may get proper grip of my existing competencies. This report will also formulate paths through
which I can cross all the barriers through practical experimentation in the career counseling
course.
In this interview I interacted with a student of mass communication who is enrolled in the 6 th
semester of bachelors program in a university. The duration of this interview is 18 minutes 14
seconds which is being divided into four stage model. The time taken in stage 1 of repo building
is 02:05, than in stage 2 which is exploration was done for (08:07), after which new perspectives
were discussed for about 05:43. In the final stage, future action plan took around (04:24).
I was quite confident while introducing myself to the camera which seems to be proper and was
confident. I greeted my client with respect and response from client was appreciable. Client
seemed to be quite comfortable with the in camera session which made it easy to build a strong
understanding in between. Client had idea of career counseling which he explained himself on
asking (00:18 00:40). It was his first session of discussion on careers. But he was adding
confidently in conversation.
The relationship developed was quite effective with proper usage of gestures, postures and facial
expressions which enabled me to carry forward session in a glibber way. In start, I felt little
shaky but active participation made me to build a firm conversational format.
I structured my questions in a way so that client could answer them properly through which I
may gather information which is required for my understanding. I was not expecting client to be
that much extrovert but providing a proper consent and introduction made it possible for client to
share his ideas and experiences willingly.
I tried to build a proper contract with client but in start of stage 1, I felt little unstable which
could be observed from frequent usage of notes that I had in front of me. At times this can cosset
all the responsiveness built from start and can lead to the lack of interest, trust and uncomforting
for client.
I start exploring client from (02:10) which plays a crucial role to understand the issue of the
client. If this stage is worked properly this can the level of interest and motivation to get involved
with the client. Client seemed to have a proper understanding of the problem because he had
enough exposure of related field which helped him to stick on the right track and empowered me
to let client decide what he want to do and how it will be possible for him (02:21 02:50). At
(03:11) I grabbed the point over which client was stuck with, from where I started putting

questions over which he was not focusing (03:59). Although he knew about them, opened up by
giving proper attention, maintaining eye contact and appreciating him over his achievements
(06:23).
I tried to formulate questions related to the work of different theorists in a simplified way. It
made easy for my understanding that how and in what ways different theorists analyze person
abilities accordingly. I have been able to take help of person centered approach (01:05) where I
asked client over what he want to discuss in the session which I carry forwarded accordingly by
making client more motivated discussing his interest. Client chose to discuss marketing for his
future career over which I had enough information at my back end but kept on probing clients
concepts rather providing too much information at start (06:20 08:10). I actively listened to the
client`s views to make sure I am understanding and was adding to make him speak more for
clarifications (09:50). I used another theory of social Learning at (05:23) by asking question
related to motivation and inspiration.
The level of respect was maintained properly from both ends with proper allocation of space to
think and express views with the genuine information from both ends (0:11 18:00). New
perspectives in stage 3 were explored properly which were due to covering stage 2 properly
(02:05 10:00). Ideas were thrown for client to brainstorm (12:27) which enabled me to reach
the expectation level of client. Stage 4 was not covered according to my expectations where I felt
client was not properly sure that in what ways he will successfully make a proper plan (14:07). I
explained the purpose of future action plan and how it would be beneficial for him (15:50). After
that I summarized all the session in a simplified way to give glimpse of the activity.
I kept my session simple by putting different questions to balance the role of counselor and
client. I had in mind from start to make it possible in a way where client must speak more to
make my job easy for `career idea exploration` to benefit client more. Client answered my
questions in detail through which he was able to understand his existing skills and abilities. I felt
client was self-motivated from all the experience and exposure he attained. The positive thing I
felt about client that he was a balanced personality who kept his personal views and emotions in
a limited way.
For further sessions, I need to get more confident while asking questions because positive
expression always leads to better repo building which again helps counselors to explore more in
coming stages. I felt in this interview that I should take less help from notes which creates
uncomfortable environment for client who can at certain point loose interest by observing and
feeling a non-serious attitude towards his problem from counselor. I also felt that remolding of
few questions to make understand the context can be more beneficial. I need to work over to
make more structured, meaningful and open-ended questions.
The whole concept of counseling seems to be easy job when viewed on generalized term but
actually it requires way too much involvement with the theoretical perspectives in which

counselors must have a proper grip over different models and theory. Counselors should enhance
skills to keep track of the conversation while probing and should develop mind set to understand
the nature of client at start. Clients always show up with lot of expectations to get solutions of
their problems, for which counselors must take a firm grip to satisfy client at least with providing
few paths with mutual consensus of client. To be a good career counselor, one must learn this art
with keen interest because once a client is not satisfied he will never show up again for any
session.
