Facilis Shared File System Requirements

Multi-user Write volumes can be accessed via either Windows, Mac OSX or Linux Fibre
Channel clients or Windows, Mac OSX or Linux Ethernet clients. Multi-user Write for
Mac requires OS 10.5.8 or later. Ethernet access is available through either 10 Gbit, 4
x 1Gbit bonded ports or a single 1Gbit connection to the server via the supported SMC
or LG managed switch. Ethernet connectivity requires the Facilis Shared File System.
Only Multi-user Write volumes are accessible via Ethernet.
Ethernet connectivity via 4-port bonded connection requires a free slot in the server for
a PCIX or PCIE Ethernet card depending on the model of your TerraBlock. Ethernet
connectivity via the 10 Gbit option requires a Windows 7 x64 based TerraBlock and a
free PCIe slot. On servers that are fully populated with direct connected clients, the
network must be re-configured with a fibre switch to maintain fibre connectivity for all
clients and to make a slot available for the addition of the Ethernet hardware.

Server RAM Requirements

All TerraBlock Servers may require a RAM upgrade to work with version 5.6.x. Any 12D,
24EX or 24D system that shipped with 2 GB RAM requires a 2 GB RAM upgrade (4GB
total). Any 8XS model that shipped with 1 GB of RAM requires a 1 GB RAM upgrade
(2GB RAM Total). This can be acquired from Facilis Technology on a limited basis.

Fibre Channel Clients

PCI-Express motherboard platforms using Celerity 41ES and 81EN must have an
available 4x or 8x PCIe slot for the fibre controller. This slot must be qualified by the
application manufacturer as a valid media controller position. In a Mac PCIE platform
with expansion slot utility, the slot configuration must include a slot with at least 4x
speed for the Fibre Channel card.
PCIX motherboard platforms using Celerity 41XS must have an available 3.3volt 64/66

or higher PCI-X slot for the fibre controller. This slot must be qualified by the application
manufacturer as a valid media controller position.

Installation Instructions for New Systems

Server
New TerraBlock server systems contain an active license based on the options at the
time of purchase. Based on the license, the Facilis Shared File System will be enabled
or disabled. (For existing servers, see Licensing under Installation Instructions for
Upgrading an Existing System below).

Client
Windows:
As a local system administrator level user, copy the entire Windows Manager directory
from the Facilis USB Key to the internal hard drive of the client workstation and launch
the TerraBlock Manger from within the copied directory. The TerraBlock Manager.exe
must remain in the Windows Manager directory in order to function correctly. A
shortcut to the TerraBlock Manager location can be created if desired.

In order for the TerraBlock Manager software components to install

properly, the software must be launched for the first time by a local
system user with administrator access.
Once the TerraBlock Manager software has been successfully launched by
a local system user with administrator access, the TerraBlock Manager
software will then be available for use by local system users with normal
access.
With a valid user account, all TerraBlock software can be downloaded from the Facilis
website (Facilis Support). An account can be created if one does not exist.
Mac OS X:
As a system Administrator level user, copy the Mac TerraBlock Manager .zip file from
the Facilis USB key to the desktop and extract the.zip. Move the resulting Mac Manager
folder to a location on the internal hard drive that will be accessible to all users, such as
the Applications folder.
As a system Administrator level user, launch the TerraBlock Manager from within the
Mac Manager directory. You will be prompted with a Mac OS authorization dialog. Enter
your Administrator credentials in the dialog. If working with Multi-user Write volumes,
mount a Multi-user Write volume. Quit the TerraBlock Manager and reboot the Mac
client.
The TerraBlock Manager application must remain within the Mac Manager directory in
order to function correctly. If necessary, shortcuts or aliases to the TerraBlock Manager
application can be created and placed in convenient locations such as the Mac Desktop
or Dock and then used to launch the TerraBlock Manager.
The Mac TerraBlock Manager needs to be authorized to run before updates can occur to
Single-user Write ReadOnly volumes. Upon selecting Update ReadOnly in the Mac
TerraBlock Manager, a prompt for the admin password will appear. After the Admin
password is applied, the update function will operate without re-authorization if the
application remains in the location where first launched.
With a valid user account, all TerraBlock software can be downloaded from the Facilis
website (Facilis Support). An account can be created if one does not exist.
Once the TerraBlock Manager software has been successfully launched
and installed by a local system user with administrator access, the
TerraBlock Manager software will then be available for use by local
system users with standard access.
Linux:
Copy the Linux_Manager.zip archive from the Facilis USB drive to the desktop and
extract the .zip archive. Copy the resulting Linux_Manager folder to a location on the
internal hard drive that will be accessible from all users.
The Linux TerraBlock Manager must be launched from the terminal as the Root user.
In the terminal, as ROOT, navigate to the Linux_Manager folder, and type
./launch.sh. See "Launching the Linux TerraBlock Manager" in the TerraBlock User
Guide for further instructions regarding specific software settings in RedHat Linux and
Autodesk clients.

If working with Multi-user Write volumes, mount a Multi-user Write volume. Once the
Multi-user Write volume has mounted successfully, quit the TerraBlock Manager and
reboot the Linux client.
For Single-user Write Volumes, TerraBlock will present a raw unformatted device to any
Linux operating system that can support a fibre channel connection via 2Gbit, 4Gbit or
8Gbit Host Bus Adapter (HBA). This device can then be manually partitioned and
formatted using operating system disk utilities such as fdisk or parted.
In a single server environment, there must be only one cable connected to the
TerraBlock client station. For setup purposes, it will not matter which port is connected.
When connecting the fibre HBA to a Facilis TerraBlock server or switch, be sure there
are link lights active on the port.
After installing the fibre cable and rebooting, there should be a TOOLS volume of 1.03
GB in size in the Linux Logical Volume Manager. This volume will be formatted Win95
FAT32, and will not have a mount point.
For more information on configuring the TerraBlock Manager, partitioning and
formatting volumes, please see the TerraBlock 5.6 User Guide.

Installation Instructions for Upgrading an Existing System

MULTIPLE SERVER ENVIRONMENT ALL SERVERS MUST BE
UPDATED TO TERRABLOCK 5.6.
SAVE METADATA PRIOR TO UPGRADING TO TERRABLOCK 5.6 (See
appendix for instructions).
TerraBlock 5.6 Server is not backward compatible with previous
releases of the TerraBlock Manager software. When upgrading to
TerraBlock server 5.6, the TerraBlock Manager software must be
updated to 5.6 on all clients (fibre and Ethernet).
Volume Check:
Prior to upgrading, it is recommended that all active volumes be checked for
consistency. On Windows, the disk check feature can be used from the explorer by
selecting the volume in My Computer, and selecting File menu Properties. In the Tools
tab, select Check Now and fix filesystem errors on the following screen.
In Mac OSX, use Disk First Aid in the Disk Utility to verify and repair volumes. If Disk
First Aid cannot repair the volumes, Alsoft Disk Warrior may provide an alternative.
Licensing:
Prior to licensing, consider whether your TerraBlock system will have the Facilis Shared
File System enabled for Multi-user Write support. If so, follow these instructions for
acquiring the hardware upgrades necessary. If not, skip to Request a License.
Existing licenses from version 5.5.1 are compatible with version 5.6.x

Requirements prior to enabling Facilis Shared File System:

1. 4 GB RAM installed in the TerraBlock 12D, 24EX, and 24D server running XP
32bit OS. 2 GB RAM installed in the TerraBlock 8XS server running XP 32bit OS.
When 5.0 and Shared File System license is requested, a 2 GB RAM upgrade (1
GB RAM upgrade for 8XS if necessary) will be shipped to you free of charge on
your UPS or FedEx account number.
2. 6 GB RAM installed in the TerraBlock 24EX, and 24D server running Windows 7
64bit OS and supported hardware (X7 motherboard). This is required for
Windows 7 64bit Server Upgrade Kit.
3. If using Ethernet access through the Facilis Shared File System, an Ethernet
package including either a 10 Gbit Ethernet card or a dual-port 1 Gbit Ethernet
card to be configured for your server and a managed switch is required for
highest performance. If only simple connectivity is needed (push/pull) one of
the built-in Ethernet ports on the TerraBlock server can be used. See the
TerraBlock 5.0 User Guide for more information.
4. A license for the server. The Facilis Shared File System is an optional feature set
that requires licensing. Contact Facilis Technology (sales@facilis.com) or your
reseller for information on obtaining or purchasing a license.
Requesting a License:
To request a license, or to find out if your TerraBlock is covered under a current support
contract, send an Email to license@facilis.com. Include:
1. Your TerraBlock serial number (Found on a silver or black tag on the back or side
of the unit. Depending on the model and ship date, the serial number may also
be found in the TerraBlock directory at the server Ex: TB00xxx).
2. Your company name and contact information. We require two Email addresses
for contact information.
3. The TBLicenseData" file as an attachment. The file is found in C:\Program
Files/Facilis/TerraBlock on the server. If file is not found, contact Facilis
Support.
4. Indication of whether you are requesting version 5 alone or Facilis Shared File
System for Windows.
If you have a current support contract, you will receive a new license file for version
5.6. A license file for Shared FS will be granted after verification of hardware
requirements and upgrades. Please allow up to 24 hours during weekday business
hours to receive your license file or a request for additional information.
Do not upgrade without obtaining a license file or without the proper upgrades and
hardware requirements. If you have more than one TerraBlock unit, you must upgrade
all units to version 5.6. A mix of TerraBlock software versions is not allowed on the
same network. It is not required that all servers in a network have a license for Facilis
Shared File System. Any server not licensed for Facilis Shared File System will allow
only Single-user Write functionality and will not be accessible via the direct Ethernet
option in version 5.6.

As a system Administrator user, copy the Mac TerraBlock Manager .zip file from the
Facilis USB key to the desktop and extract the.zip. Move the resulting Mac Manager
folder to a location on the internal hard drive that will be accessible to all users, such as
the Applications folder.

14

As a system Administrator user, launch the TerraBlock Manager from within the Mac
Manager directory. You will be prompted with a Mac OS authorization dialog. Enter your
Admin credentials in the dialog. If working with Multi-user Write volumes, mount a
Multi-user Write volume. This will ensure that the Multi-user Write driver is loaded
properly. Once the Multi-user Write volume has mounted successfully, quit the
TerraBlock Manager and reboot the Mac client.
After the admin
password is applied, the update function will operate without re-authorization if the
application remains in the location where it was first launched.
With a valid user account, all TerraBlock software can be downloaded from the Facilis
website (Facilis Support). An account can be created if one does not exist

Once the TerraBlock Manager software has been successfully launched by

a local system user with administrator access, the TerraBlock Manager
software will then be available for use by local system users with
standard access.
If working with Multi-user Write volumes, mount a Multi-user Write
volume. This will ensure that the Multi-user Write driver is loaded properly. Once the
Multi-user write volume has mounted properly, quit the TerraBlock Manager and reboot
the Linux client.
See "Launching the Linux TerraBlock Manager" in the TerraBlock User Guide for further
instructions regarding specific software settings in RedHat Linux and Autodesk clients.
For Single-user Write Volumes, TerraBlock will present a raw unformatted storage
device to any Linux operating system that can support a fibre connection via 2Gbit,
4Gbit or 8Gbit HBA. This device can then be manually partitioned and formatted using
operating system disk utilities such as fdisk or parted.

15

GB in size in the Linux Logical Volume Manager. This volume will be formatted Win95
FAT32, and will not have a mount point.
For more information on configuring the TerraBlock Manager, partitioning and
formatting volumes, please see the TerraBlock 5.6 User Guide.
Important TerraBlock Manager Client Installation Notes:

Renaming the TerraBlock Manager application/exe file will

result in the upgrade not completing successfully.

The TerraBlock Manager software application must remain

inside of the TerraBlock Manager folder in order for it to function

properly. If you wish to move the application to a new location,
create shortcuts or aliases to the TerraBlock Manager and move
the shortcut or alias to the desired location.

If you have multiple users logging into the same client machine
(Windows, Mac or Linux), the Unmount all volumes on exit
feature should be enabled in TerraBlock Manager. This will
prevent unauthorized access to TerraBlock volumes. The
Unmount all volumes on exit feature can be found under the
TerraBlock Manager User Mode menu.

When installing on Windows or Macintosh systems, the

TerraBlock Manager must be launched for the first time from a

local user account with Administrator privileges. On Linux
systems the TerraBlock Manager must ALWAYS be run as the
ROOT user.

Facilis Project Manager:

As a system Administrator user, copy the Facilis Project Manager .zip file from the
Facilis USB key to the desktop and extract the.zip. Move the resulting Facilis Project
Manager application to a location on the internal hard drive that will be accessible to all
users, such as the Applications folder.
As a system Admin user, launch the Facilis Project Manager.

Note: The Facilis Project Manager and the Facilis Project Viewer
cannot reside within the same directory. If also installing the
Facilis Project Viewer, in order to prevent application conflicts,
keep the applications separate by creating a new folder and
installing the Facilis Project Viewer within the folder you just
created.

Resolved Bugs in TerraBlock 5.6

This section describes issues addressed by this release of Facilis TerraBlock. These
issues may or may not have been included in prior Known Issues sections.

Improved stability and performance when reading from and writing to

Single-user Write (SUW) volumes.

Improved stability and performance when reading from and writing to

Multi-user Write (MUW) volumes.

Improved stability during the volume recovery process.

All volumes will now mount properly when mounting both Single-User Write and
Multi-User Write volumes simultaneously.

The message: "Facilis File Mount API not installed. Make sure you are running
Admin access." no longer occurs when attempting to mount a volume(s) over
Ethernet.

The TerraBlock manager will no longer crash if the client is connected over fibre
and Ethernet with Network Configuration enabled.
o Dual connecting the same client Fibre Channel and Ethernet will now
result in the client defaulting to the Fibre connection and the Ethernet
will be ignored.

Create volume button no longer causes the Linux Manager application to quit.

Users now have the ability to resize Multi-user Write (MUW) from client
workstations.

Volumes created equal to or smaller than 2TB with version 5.6 can be expanded
higher than 2 TB.

Volume Expansion will now complete when a Single-user Write volume is set to
the Mount point C:\Volumes.

Email notification would continue to send emails until the system event log was
cleared.

Facilis Project Manager would not automatically take ownership of FCP or Adobe
Premiere projects after the initial save.

The System Tab in the TerraBlock Manager will now display the correct drive
count after adding a TX16 expansion chassis to a SATA based Windows 7 server.

When unmounting Single-user Write volumes in Linux, you will no longer

receive the message Some or all of your selected volumes could not be found or
unmounted, please unmount via your OS partitioner.
o

After mounting or unmounting a Single-user Write volume using the

TerraBlock Manager, Single-user Write volumes will still need to be
manually mounted or unmounted in the Linux file system using the
mount or umount command.

17

Known Issues
This section describes known software and hardware issues. The client or server
operating system, TerraBlock client or server software, or the client or server hardware
may encounter these issues.
General

A failing or suspect fibre channel cable or fibre channel connection (SFP, HBA)
can cause Multi-user Write volumes to disconnect from the TerraBlock client.
o Determine if the Multi-user Write volume disconnect issue affects only a
specific client or if it affects multiple clients.
o

If the problem persists, eliminate fibre channel jump connections, such

as wall jacks, fibre channel switches, etc. If possible, connect your
TerraBlock client directly to the TerraBlock server and see if the problem
continues.

Verify all fibre channel cables, SFPs and fibre channel HBA cards are in
proper working order.

Compatibility: Mounted volumes appear empty after mounting a volume using

version 5.x of the TerraBlock Manager and version 4.x of the TerraBlock Server.
On Windows systems the Facilis system tray icon (FacTBStat) will display error
messages.
o TerraBlock Manager 5.x is not backward compatible with previous
versions of TerraBlock Server (4.x).
o Previous versions of TerraBlock Manager (4.x) are compatible with
newer versions (5.0.x, 5.5.1) of TerraBlock Server.

Compatibility: Version 5.6 of TerraBlock Server and TerraBlock Manager are not
backward compatible with any previous TerraBlock release (4.x, 5.0.x, 5.5.1).
TerraBlock version 5.6 requires an upgrade of both the TerraBlock Server and
the TerraBlock Manager software to version 5.6.
o Attempting to use previous versions of TerraBlock software with
TerraBlock version 5.6 will generate a warning message: There is a
version mismatch between the TerraBlock Manager and TerraBlock
Server(s).

Unable to mount volumes using a TerraBlock client running with Mac OS 10.7.x
in 32bit mode.
o The operating system must be set to 64bit mode when using TerraBlock
Manager and Mac OS 10.7.x.

On Windows 7 systems, loopback devices, tools volumes and Multi-user Write

volumes are displayed in the 'safely remove device' list and in the Send To
menu on a right-mouse click.
o Do not attempt to manually eject the loopback devices, tools volumes or
Multi-user Write volumes. When seen in the 'safely remove device' list or
in the Send To menu, these devices can be ignored.

The Locate button is grayed out in the TerraBlock Manager System tab on
Windows Clients.

18

The Locate button will only locate physical drives when the TerraBlock
Manager is running on the TerraBlock Server.

If the TerraBlock Server's own IP address is entered in the TerraBlock Manager's

Network Configuration setting while running on the TerraBlock Server itself,
the TerraBlockServer will behave erratically. NTFS volumes may mount as raw
(unformatted) devices and you may be unable to create a Single-user Write
Volume.
o On the TerraBlock Server, when enabling the Enable Network
Configuration check box in the TerraBlock Manager Network
Configuration setting, make sure that the IP address fields are left blank.

When launching the TerraBlock Manager on the TerraBlock Server, the

TerraBlock Manager Server functions are disabled and the Facilis user is set to
Normal access.
o Click on the TerraBlock Manager User Tab, select the Facilis user and
press the Change Access button. Re-launch the TerraBlock Manager.

Connecting a new client workstation for the first time, with User and Password
authentication enabled, will initially not prompt the user for the TerraBlock user
login when launching the TerraBlock Manger.
o Quit and re-launch the TerraBlock Manager on the client workstation.

Macintosh based Avid Media Composer / Symphony project sharing is not

supported on version 5.5.3 with TerraBlock 5.6. Versions of Avid Media
Composer up to 5.5.2 are supported on OSX 10.6.8 and Media Composer 6.0.x
is supported on OSX 10.7.x.
o Macintosh based Avid Media Composer / Symphony version 5.5.3 is
supported in a non-project sharing environment with TerraBlock 5.6.

Macintosh based Avid Media Composer / Symphony Maximum Capture Time

settings for capturing MXF Media Files should be set to 20 minutes or less.
o When capturing MXF Media Files on the fly (no in/out points) the
Maximum Capture Time setting should be set to 20 minutes or less for
optimal performance.

Moving large amounts of data through either Windows Desktop copies or Mac
Finder copies can cause performance issues and server lock-ups. For copies
such as this use the Facilis Migration Tool.

It may take an extended period of time when opening a directory containing

thousands of files for the first time on a Multi-user Write Volume.

When attempting to create a new volume from the server, if the server is busy
you may receive the following error: Could not format volume <volumename>
(error in format_ex), please manually format.
o You can manually format the volume using Disk Management, or
unmount and delete it from Terrablock Manager and create it when the
server is not busy.

AutoFormat and/or Synchronize User options do not appear on the server.

o Go into Disk Management via Computer Management and force a
rescan.

19

When you increase the size of an NTFS volume it can take up to 1 minute, after
you have changed the capacity and mounted it Single-user write, for the added
capacity to appear in My Computer. If you have waited more than that time and
it still has not increased, unmount and re-mount the volume. If the
unmount/remount does not result in the size increasing see Tech Note TN-032
at http://www.facilis.com/support_technotes.html.

Multi-user write volumes are qualified up to two streams of playback per client
at any compressed resolution. Although a higher stream count can likely be
achieved not more than two has been qualified.

When using Avid bin/project sharing, the optimal recommendation would be to

create a Multi-user Write volume dedicated for project files in order to improve
application performance. If working with a larger volume it is recommended
that projects be placed within an Avid Projects designated sub-folder on the
Multi-user Write volume, rather than at the root level of the volume.

When creating an NTFS volume over 8TB in size, after volume creation via
TerraBlock Manager, the volume must be manually converted to GUID partition
table (a.k.a., GPT) and then manually formatted using Windows Disk
Management (See the TerraBlock Users Guide for detailed instructions).
o NTFS GPT volumes are supported for Win7, Multi-user Write (MUW) only.

When creating volumes that are less than 8TB in size, use the Auto-Format
feature in the TerraBlock Manager. Use of the Auto-Format feature for volumes
that are 8TB or less will automatically create volumes with the supported
partition scheme.
o NTFS volumes that are less than 8TB in size should use the Master Boot
Record (MBR) partition scheme.
o HFS+ (MAC OS EXTENDED) volumes should use the Apple Partition Map
(APM) partition scheme.

Increasing the size a Multi-user Write volume that is larger than 8TB fails to
show the correct size increase.
o Enter Disk Management on the TerraBlock server, locate the volume,
right click and select Extend.

Creating and/or Auto Formatting volumes greater than 4TB may take a few
minutes on the server side, especially if several volumes are already mounted
on the system.
o Please be patient, the server is still working.

Volumes with different access permissions may all mount Read-only if mounted
at the same time.
o Use Mount Properties to set Auto Mount accordingly.

Problems mounting Multi-user Write volumes and repeated registry entry

messages may be caused by failure of installation due to logging in as a domain
user.
o Log in locally with Administrator privileges, launch the TerraBlock
Manager and reboot. A domain user account may then be used.

During the initial mount of a Mac OS X Multi-user Write volume over Fibre
Channel, an additional Tools volume temporarily mounting on the Desktop.

20

This is normal behavior.

Failure to connect over Ethernet may be the result of the Server not having
initialized the Ethernet option.
o On the server, confirm that the Network Configuration is enabled in the
TerraBlock Manager and reboot the server. After reboot, open
SMDriveMonitor and verify the following line Listening on port 859 for
socket connections at the bottom of the output.

Failure to connect or poor performance with TerraBlock via Ethernet may be the
result of the Windows firewall on the server.
o Disable the Windows Firewall service on the TerraBlock. Contact
Customer support for more information on alternate configurations.

External Tandem volumes created with Atto Power Center or Atto Express Stripe
are not supported for use in Multi-user Write mode.
o To use an External Tandem volume as Multi-User Write the volume must
be created using either RAID 50 or RAID 51 protection.

Adding an addition NIC card and creating a Team for the Ethernet based Shared
File System may prevent the server (smdrive.exe) from starting successfully.
o Contact Facilis Support

Leaving the TerraBlock Manager and/or SMManager open on the TerraBlock

server may impact some client operations including volume mount and Auto
Format.
o Please be sure to close the TerraBlock Manager and SMManager on the
server when not in use.

External Tandem volumes that fail due to a drive failure on one of the Tandem
groups will not show Failed at the top level. The volume must be expanded in
order to see the failure on the individual members.
o To be alerted of errors on the system, re-launch the TerraBlock Manager
or use the Email Notification feature.

Unknown users may appear in the users tab, at times duplicating the WWN ID of
known users. This is due to the Device Discovery of Fibre Channel cards being
changed through firmware flash.
o Uncheck Remember mounted volumes after server reboot in server
Admin settings, and restart the server to clear these entries. Be sure to
re-enable the setting after reboot.

Un-mount by Index will fail if a user is logged on in more than one place, or had
been logged in previously using a different fibre card.
o Deselect Remember mounted volumes after server reboot in Admin
settings and restart the server. Be sure to restore that setting after
reboot.

When the server does not have enough free space available to create the RAID5
portion of a large volume, an error will appear and a smaller volume will be
created which uses the available space remaining on the server.
o Clear space to allow for the DynaRAID protection

The arrow for Tandem volume display will disappear when turned-down if all

21

Tandem members are not present. Holding the Shift key on the keyboard, click
the Refresh button in the TerraBlock Manager to see all members.

After creating a larger than 2TB volume, the size will not immediately display
correctly. Please be patient as volumes are created in 500 GB segments. The
size display will update accordingly.

Volumes created equal to or smaller than 2TB cannot be expanded higher than
2 TB prior to 5.6.

If the IP address in TerraBlock Manager Network Configuration is invalid, there

will be a delay before the TerraBlock Manager UI appears. This delay is caused
by the software attempting to communicate with an invalid TerraBlock Server IP
as listed in the Network Configuration. Enter a valid server IP in the Network
Configuration once the TerraBlock Manager UI appears.

When running The ATTO Configuration Tool on Mac OS 10.7.2 you may receive
a message asking you to install Java. The ATTO Configuration Tool requires Java
in order to operate. Allow the Mac OS Software Update to install the Java
software.

PowerPC based Mac OS X clients are no longer supported.

The Tools drive must be reformatted from a Windows based client or TerraBlock
server for the Normal local user login to work properly on Windows XP.

The following error message "Disk Was Not Ejected Properly" is a known issue
not a bug. If a Volume gets renamed in the TerraBlock Manager and the
partition is not updated accordingly then you will receive this message.
o To change this correctly, see "Change Volume" in the TerraBlock User's
Guide.

Windows Multi-user Write

When copying a file from a Multi-user Write volume to a Windows 7 system, you
may receive a Windows Security warning.

Volumes set to a Mount Point of C:\Volumes, but mounted to a drive letter do

not un-mount
o Reboot to un-mount volumes.

While supported, connecting to TerraBlock through the Shared File System

while also using an Avid Unity MediaNet Ethernet Attached Client may cause
compatibility issues.
o Please contact Facilis Support for instructions

Avoid changing volumes from Single-user Write to Multi-user Write during

production time. The rescan initiated on the server may cause interruption in
service if the server is under heavy load.
o Change volume to Multi-user Write when the server is idle.

Mount by Index is not supported for Multi-user Write volumes.

22

Capture on Avid Symphony Nitris (legacy non-DX Nitris) is not supported to a

Multi-user write volume mounted over Ethernet.

Windows Single-user Write

The TerraBlock Manager can become unresponsive if Unmount all volumes on

exit is set under the User Mode Menu and you quit the TerraBlock Manager with
Single-user Write RAID50 or RAID51 volumes mounted.

Volumes created greater than 2TB cannot be expanded higher than 4 TB on a

Windows Vista workstation.
o Expand the volume on Windows XP 32bit

Creating volumes greater than 2 TB on XP 64 or Server 2003 64 fails.

o Create and format over 2TB Volumes on the TerraBlock server or fibre
attached XP Pro client. If you use the Auto Format feature you can also
create the volume(s) on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system.

Volumes created with GUID partition table in Intel Mac Leopard will not mount
properly through MacDrive on Windows
o Do not use GUID partition table when formatting HFS+ (Mac OS
Extended) volumes. If you have iPartition software on a Mac system you
can convert the volume from GUID to Apple Partition Map.

Drive Rescan after mount or un-mount in TerraBlock Manager may take a long
time if there are numerous devices in Disk Management. This will not stop the
user from performing other actions in the TerraBlock Manager, or working with
other applications.

Some OMFI files will not save properly to a volume that is greater than 2TB in
size, when created and used on a 32bit Windows operating system.
o Use a volume under 2TB, or use MXF media type.

When mounting volumes on Windows XP, messages regarding new devices that
have been installed may appear, asking you to reboot the system.
o Cancel and disregard these messages.

On Windows XP Avid systems, the alldrives command will be necessary to see

media on Single-user Write volumes mounted as Read-only.
o Open the console and type alldrives in the text entry field. This setting
will persist through restarts until the Avid software is changed.

Macintosh OSX Multi-user Write

Under certain circumstances, Final Cut Pro may hang on launch after using a
Single-user Write volume as a Final Cut Pro scratch disk, then switching the
volume to Multi-user write and continuing to use it as a scratch disk.
o This is an issue that can be encountered when using MacDrive 8 on the
TerraBlock Server. This problem does not occur when using MacDrive 9.

Apple LSI Fibre Channel HBA: On a Mac OS 10.7.x (Lion) fibre attached client,

23

after the Multi-user Write volume mounts on the desktop, multiple instances of
the Tools drive repeatedly mount on the desktop.
o The Apple LSI Fibre Channel Card is not supported for use with Mac OS
10.7.x (Lion).
o The Apple LSI Fibre Channel Card is supported for use with Mac OS
10.6.8 only.

You receive the following error when attempting to launch Terrablock Manager:
'Facilis File Mount API is not installed, Make sure you are running with admin
access
o Re-name the Terrablock Manager executable to its default name
Terrablock Manager.app and / or move it back to its original location
inside the TerraBlock Manager folder. Create an alias to the TerraBlock
Manager and move / re-name it if necessary.

When batch digitizing in an Avid to a Multi-user Write volume you may see the
error Digitize aborted due to lack of storage space.
o Click OK to continue through the error.

HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) based Multi-user Write volumes require

un-mount/remount to view the most recent Finder contents on Mac OS 10.5
based clients. A 3rd party application called Refresh Finder can also be used for
this purpose. It can be found here: http://www.soderhavet.com/refresh/. This
does not affect Mac OS 10.6x / 10.7.x based clients.

In an Avid shared environment, file system busy messages may occur when
attempting to write to Multi-user write volumes through Symphony/Media
Composer and/or -36 errors may occur when attempting to copy project folders
at the Finder level when the Mac host name contains illegal characters.
o Remove illegal characters (|:\?*><) from the Computer name in
Sharing Setup.

Using an HFS formatted Multi-User Write volume can cause filesystem busy
errors due to the shared project bin lock being set incorrectly
Issue only occurs when attempting to save the bin while the lock icon is
red

Working with Avid Project and Bin sharing: Only specific Avid versions are
supported together in a shared project environment.
(Example: Avid 5.0.3 is not compatible for project sharing with Avid
version 6.0)

File System Emulation Mode does not enable with Avid Unity client installed.
o Uninstall Avid Unity MediaNet client, reboot and launch the TerraBlock
Manager to install Facilis software.

Digidesign Pro Tools prior to version 9.0 is not supported for use with Multi-user
write volumes.

Volumes created as Multi-user Write (MUW) are formatted as NTFS on the

server. Due to the NTFS formatting, these volumes will mountable as Read
Only Single-User Write (SUW) volumes on Macintosh clients.
o If SUW volumes are needed for use on Mac clients, create the volumes as
SUW from the Mac client using the Auto Format feature. This will allow

24

for Single-user Write read and write access.

When attempting to write to journaled Multi-user (MUW) volume, you will

receive a -36 error.
o Using the TerraBlock Manager, unmount the MUW volume, switch the
volume to Single-user Write (SUW) and remount it as a SUW volume.
Open Apple Disk Utility, select the SUW volume from the list of disks and
disable journaling on the disk. (File Menu > Hold down apple/option/shift
keys > Disable Journaling). Using the TerraBlock Manager, unmount the
SUW volume, switch back to MUW and re-mount.

When opening shared projects from the root of a volume in Avid Media
Composer, there can be a long delay depending on the amount of files on the
volume. This is a result of the Avid software scanning all files and directories on
the volume.
o Create a sub-directory on the root level of the volume for Avid projects.
Alternatively create a separate volume specifically for Avid projects.

Using Avid Media Composer 5.6.3 or 6.x, when trying to create a shared project
on a Multi-User Write HFS formatted volume, you receive the following error
from Media Composer: Mac Error -36 (I/O Error)
o Make sure Multi-User Write volumes are formatted NTFS for use with
these versions of Avid Media Composer

Multi-user Write volumes will no longer mount in Mac 10.7.x (Lion) after
installing Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 or 5.5.3.1. Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 or
5.5.3.1only supports local storage on Mac OS 10.7.x. Refer to the Media
Composer 5.5.3 release notes for additional detail.
o To mount Multi-User Write volumes on Mac OS 10.7.x use Avid Media
Composer 5.5.2
o Contact Facilis customer support for more details.

Folder aliases, shell scripts, zip files and other applications will not function
correctly when attempting to access or run the alias, script or application from
a Multi-user write volume that is mounted on Macintosh clients.
o When attempting to work with folder aliases, shell scripts, zip files or
other applications located on a TerraBlock volume and mounted on a
Macintosh client, use HFS+ formatted Single-user Write volumes.

Macintosh OSX Single-user Write

Mounted volumes >2TB may disappear from the desktop unexpectedly

o Disable Disk Sleep in system preferences

TerraBlock Manager launched on OS X 10.6.x or higher may not connect to the

server over Fibre Channel if the Tools volume is HFS+ (MAC OS EXTENDED)
formatted.
o The Tools volume must be formatted FAT32/MSDOS for Snow Leopard or
Lion support.

Volumes may not un-mount properly if any volume is in the process of changing
from Single-user Write to Multi-user Write. If the volume(s) remains on the
desktop but appears un-mounted in the TerraBlock Manager, reboot the Mac
system before proceeding.

25

If volumes are mounted during an OS upgrade, those volumes will take

ownership of the user active during upgrade.
o Un-mount all volumes and disconnect the Fibre Channel cable during any
upgrade.

In a multi-server environment, if only one TerraBlock server is being seen by a

Mac client, and Tools2, Tools3, etc. are the name of the respective Tools
volumes, if a server is rebooted an unsafe removal error will occur. This will not
harm the volumes.

When copying a large number of files to Single-User Write volumes sluggishness

and delays creating volumes with the TerraBlock manager, etc. may be
experienced due to the volume being indexed by Spotlight.
o Check the Spotlight indexing status in the top Mac menu bar. It may
take 15-20 min for status to display after the copies have completed

If a volume is deleted and another created, the previous volume information

may persist.
o Do not attempt to use a ghost volume that presents itself in place of an
unformatted volume youve just created. Delete the partition and
format.

Linux

After launching the TerraBlock Manager using the 'sudo' command, you do
not see the Tools Drive and you receive a message, Can not connect to
TerraBlock Server. Verify that the Tools volume is mounted.
o The TerraBlock Manager must be run as the root user. In a Linux
terminal, switch to the root user using the su command. From the
same terminal that you are running as root, start the TerraBlock
Manager using the launch.sh file.

Compatibility: Unable to launch TerraBlock Manager 5.5 on Red Hat (RHEL)

version 4. Receive a Floating Point exception.
o TerraBlock Manager 5.5 requires Red Hat 5 (or higher). TerraBlock
Manager 4.2.0 remains compatible with Red Hat 4 and TerraBlock
Server up to version 5.5.1.

Linux fibre channel connected clients will hang when starting the TerraBlock
Manager if the TerraBlock Server cannot be contacted.
o Verify the TerraBlock Server is operational and then reboot the Linux
client.

After mounting a Multi-user Write volume for the first time, you may receive
an error when opening the volume: You do not have the permissions
necessary to view the contents of "<volume>".
o Reboot the Linux client.

The Linux Manager does not launch on 32 bit Linux OS: Receive the error:
cannot execute binary file
o Linux TerraBlock Manager requires a 64 bit OS.

Update ReadOnly does not function on Linux

26

Un-mount (umount) and remount (mount) the filesystem through

the Unix shell

Copies through the Linux OS to TerraBlock volumes may stall and fail to
complete.
o asd
o Run the appropriate (4Gbit or 8Gbit) Linux Settings registry key on
the TerraBlock server. The keys are located in the installed Utilities
folder. (C:\Program Files\Facilis\TerraBlock\Utilities\Linux Atto
Settings for Terrablock)

When un-mounting a Single-user Write Volume using TerraBlock Manager,

the error, Some or all of your selected volumes could not be found or
unmounted, please unmount via your OS partitioner may appear.
o When un-mounting Single-user Write volumes, first un-mount the
Single-user Write Volume using the TerraBlock Manager, then
complete the un-mount process using the Linux command, umount.
Example: umount /media/<volumename>

Linux fibre channel connected clients will hang when starting the Linux
TerraBlock Manager if the TerraBlock Server cannot be contacted.
o This situation is an error condition and will occur in cases where the
Server Enclosure is turned on and running but the SMDrive service is
not running or has encountered a problem and has stopped running.
