The ATTO 3300 2Gbit Fibre Channel HBA is not supported for use
with version 5.x.
Client
Windows:
As a local system administrator level user, copy the entire Windows Manager directory
from the Facilis USB Key to the internal hard drive of the client workstation and launch
the TerraBlock Manger from within the copied directory. The TerraBlock Manager.exe
must remain in the Windows Manager directory in order to function correctly. A
shortcut to the TerraBlock Manager location can be created if desired.
If working with Multi-user Write volumes, mount a Multi-user Write volume. Once the
Multi-user Write volume has mounted successfully, quit the TerraBlock Manager and
reboot the Linux client.
For Single-user Write Volumes, TerraBlock will present a raw unformatted device to any
Linux operating system that can support a fibre channel connection via 2Gbit, 4Gbit or
8Gbit Host Bus Adapter (HBA). This device can then be manually partitioned and
formatted using operating system disk utilities such as fdisk or parted.
In a single server environment, there must be only one cable connected to the
TerraBlock client station. For setup purposes, it will not matter which port is connected.
When connecting the fibre HBA to a Facilis TerraBlock server or switch, be sure there
are link lights active on the port.
After installing the fibre cable and rebooting, there should be a TOOLS volume of 1.03
GB in size in the Linux Logical Volume Manager. This volume will be formatted Win95
FAT32, and will not have a mount point.
For more information on configuring the TerraBlock Manager, partitioning and
formatting volumes, please see the TerraBlock 5.6 User Guide.

If you have any problems with this process, email support@facilis.com.
Requirements prior to enabling T8 attached storage:
1. Windows 7 64bit OS for the 24EX and 24D server models is required for
attaching a T8 to a TerraBlock server.
2. Installation of an ATTO R380 or R680 SAS adapter in the TerraBlock server.
3. A license for the server. The Facilis T8 attached storage is an optional feature
that requires licensing. The license for the server that the T8 will attach to must
also be a Facilis Shared File System licensed server. Contact Facilis Technology
(sales@facilis.com) or your reseller for information on obtaining or purchasing a
license.
Requirements prior to adding TX16 expansion chassis:
1. Windows 7 64bit OS for the 24D server model is required for attaching a TX16 to
a TerraBlock server.
2. Installation of an ATTO H680 SAS adapter into an available PCI-E slot in the
TerraBlock server.
3. Contact Facilis Support to check RAM requirements.
11
12
11. Wait for the install complete message to appear and the Program
Files\Facilis\TerraBlock directory path to return in the command prompt.
13
14
As a system Administrator user, launch the TerraBlock Manager from within the Mac
Manager directory. You will be prompted with a Mac OS authorization dialog. Enter your
Admin credentials in the dialog. If working with Multi-user Write volumes, mount a
Multi-user Write volume. This will ensure that the Multi-user Write driver is loaded
properly. Once the Multi-user Write volume has mounted successfully, quit the
TerraBlock Manager and reboot the Mac client.
The TerraBlock Manager application must remain within the Mac Manager directory in
order to function correctly. If necessary, shortcuts or aliases to the TerraBlock Manager
application can be created and placed in convenient locations such as the Mac Desktop
or Dock and then used to launch the TerraBlock Manager.
The Mac TerraBlock Manager needs to be authorized to run before updates can occur to
Single-user Write ReadOnly volumes. Upon selecting Update ReadOnly in the Mac
TerraBlock Manager, a prompt for the admin password will appear. After the admin
password is applied, the update function will operate without re-authorization if the
application remains in the location where it was first launched.
With a valid user account, all TerraBlock software can be downloaded from the Facilis
website (Facilis Support). An account can be created if one does not exist
15
GB in size in the Linux Logical Volume Manager. This volume will be formatted Win95
FAT32, and will not have a mount point.
For more information on configuring the TerraBlock Manager, partitioning and
formatting volumes, please see the TerraBlock 5.6 User Guide.
Important TerraBlock Manager Client Installation Notes:
If you have multiple users logging into the same client machine
(Windows, Mac or Linux), the Unmount all volumes on exit
feature should be enabled in TerraBlock Manager. This will
prevent unauthorized access to TerraBlock volumes. The
Unmount all volumes on exit feature can be found under the
TerraBlock Manager User Mode menu.
Note: The Facilis Project Manager and the Facilis Project Viewer
cannot reside within the same directory. If also installing the
Facilis Project Viewer, in order to prevent application conflicts,
keep the applications separate by creating a new folder and
installing the Facilis Project Viewer within the folder you just
created.
16
All volumes will now mount properly when mounting both Single-User Write and
Multi-User Write volumes simultaneously.
The message: "Facilis File Mount API not installed. Make sure you are running
Admin access." no longer occurs when attempting to mount a volume(s) over
Ethernet.
The TerraBlock manager will no longer crash if the client is connected over fibre
and Ethernet with Network Configuration enabled.
o Dual connecting the same client Fibre Channel and Ethernet will now
result in the client defaulting to the Fibre connection and the Ethernet
will be ignored.
Create volume button no longer causes the Linux Manager application to quit.
Users now have the ability to resize Multi-user Write (MUW) from client
workstations.
Volumes created equal to or smaller than 2TB with version 5.6 can be expanded
higher than 2 TB.
Volume Expansion will now complete when a Single-user Write volume is set to
the Mount point C:\Volumes.
Email notification would continue to send emails until the system event log was
cleared.
Facilis Project Manager would not automatically take ownership of FCP or Adobe
Premiere projects after the initial save.
The System Tab in the TerraBlock Manager will now display the correct drive
count after adding a TX16 expansion chassis to a SATA based Windows 7 server.
17
Known Issues
This section describes known software and hardware issues. The client or server
operating system, TerraBlock client or server software, or the client or server hardware
may encounter these issues.
General
A failing or suspect fibre channel cable or fibre channel connection (SFP, HBA)
can cause Multi-user Write volumes to disconnect from the TerraBlock client.
o Determine if the Multi-user Write volume disconnect issue affects only a
specific client or if it affects multiple clients.
o
Verify all fibre channel cables, SFPs and fibre channel HBA cards are in
proper working order.
Compatibility: Version 5.6 of TerraBlock Server and TerraBlock Manager are not
backward compatible with any previous TerraBlock release (4.x, 5.0.x, 5.5.1).
TerraBlock version 5.6 requires an upgrade of both the TerraBlock Server and
the TerraBlock Manager software to version 5.6.
o Attempting to use previous versions of TerraBlock software with
TerraBlock version 5.6 will generate a warning message: There is a
version mismatch between the TerraBlock Manager and TerraBlock
Server(s).
Unable to mount volumes using a TerraBlock client running with Mac OS 10.7.x
in 32bit mode.
o The operating system must be set to 64bit mode when using TerraBlock
Manager and Mac OS 10.7.x.
The Locate button is grayed out in the TerraBlock Manager System tab on
Windows Clients.
18
The Locate button will only locate physical drives when the TerraBlock
Manager is running on the TerraBlock Server.
Connecting a new client workstation for the first time, with User and Password
authentication enabled, will initially not prompt the user for the TerraBlock user
login when launching the TerraBlock Manger.
o Quit and re-launch the TerraBlock Manager on the client workstation.
Moving large amounts of data through either Windows Desktop copies or Mac
Finder copies can cause performance issues and server lock-ups. For copies
such as this use the Facilis Migration Tool.
When attempting to create a new volume from the server, if the server is busy
you may receive the following error: Could not format volume <volumename>
(error in format_ex), please manually format.
o You can manually format the volume using Disk Management, or
unmount and delete it from Terrablock Manager and create it when the
server is not busy.
19
When you increase the size of an NTFS volume it can take up to 1 minute, after
you have changed the capacity and mounted it Single-user write, for the added
capacity to appear in My Computer. If you have waited more than that time and
it still has not increased, unmount and re-mount the volume. If the
unmount/remount does not result in the size increasing see Tech Note TN-032
at http://www.facilis.com/support_technotes.html.
Multi-user write volumes are qualified up to two streams of playback per client
at any compressed resolution. Although a higher stream count can likely be
achieved not more than two has been qualified.
When creating an NTFS volume over 8TB in size, after volume creation via
TerraBlock Manager, the volume must be manually converted to GUID partition
table (a.k.a., GPT) and then manually formatted using Windows Disk
Management (See the TerraBlock Users Guide for detailed instructions).
o NTFS GPT volumes are supported for Win7, Multi-user Write (MUW) only.
When creating volumes that are less than 8TB in size, use the Auto-Format
feature in the TerraBlock Manager. Use of the Auto-Format feature for volumes
that are 8TB or less will automatically create volumes with the supported
partition scheme.
o NTFS volumes that are less than 8TB in size should use the Master Boot
Record (MBR) partition scheme.
o HFS+ (MAC OS EXTENDED) volumes should use the Apple Partition Map
(APM) partition scheme.
Increasing the size a Multi-user Write volume that is larger than 8TB fails to
show the correct size increase.
o Enter Disk Management on the TerraBlock server, locate the volume,
right click and select Extend.
Creating and/or Auto Formatting volumes greater than 4TB may take a few
minutes on the server side, especially if several volumes are already mounted
on the system.
o Please be patient, the server is still working.
Volumes with different access permissions may all mount Read-only if mounted
at the same time.
o Use Mount Properties to set Auto Mount accordingly.
During the initial mount of a Mac OS X Multi-user Write volume over Fibre
Channel, an additional Tools volume temporarily mounting on the Desktop.
20
Failure to connect over Ethernet may be the result of the Server not having
initialized the Ethernet option.
o On the server, confirm that the Network Configuration is enabled in the
TerraBlock Manager and reboot the server. After reboot, open
SMDriveMonitor and verify the following line Listening on port 859 for
socket connections at the bottom of the output.
Failure to connect or poor performance with TerraBlock via Ethernet may be the
result of the Windows firewall on the server.
o Disable the Windows Firewall service on the TerraBlock. Contact
Customer support for more information on alternate configurations.
External Tandem volumes created with Atto Power Center or Atto Express Stripe
are not supported for use in Multi-user Write mode.
o To use an External Tandem volume as Multi-User Write the volume must
be created using either RAID 50 or RAID 51 protection.
Adding an addition NIC card and creating a Team for the Ethernet based Shared
File System may prevent the server (smdrive.exe) from starting successfully.
o Contact Facilis Support
External Tandem volumes that fail due to a drive failure on one of the Tandem
groups will not show Failed at the top level. The volume must be expanded in
order to see the failure on the individual members.
o To be alerted of errors on the system, re-launch the TerraBlock Manager
or use the Email Notification feature.
Unknown users may appear in the users tab, at times duplicating the WWN ID of
known users. This is due to the Device Discovery of Fibre Channel cards being
changed through firmware flash.
o Uncheck Remember mounted volumes after server reboot in server
Admin settings, and restart the server to clear these entries. Be sure to
re-enable the setting after reboot.
Un-mount by Index will fail if a user is logged on in more than one place, or had
been logged in previously using a different fibre card.
o Deselect Remember mounted volumes after server reboot in Admin
settings and restart the server. Be sure to restore that setting after
reboot.
When the server does not have enough free space available to create the RAID5
portion of a large volume, an error will appear and a smaller volume will be
created which uses the available space remaining on the server.
o Clear space to allow for the DynaRAID protection
The arrow for Tandem volume display will disappear when turned-down if all
21
Tandem members are not present. Holding the Shift key on the keyboard, click
the Refresh button in the TerraBlock Manager to see all members.
After creating a larger than 2TB volume, the size will not immediately display
correctly. Please be patient as volumes are created in 500 GB segments. The
size display will update accordingly.
Volumes created equal to or smaller than 2TB cannot be expanded higher than
2 TB prior to 5.6.
When running The ATTO Configuration Tool on Mac OS 10.7.2 you may receive
a message asking you to install Java. The ATTO Configuration Tool requires Java
in order to operate. Allow the Mac OS Software Update to install the Java
software.
The Tools drive must be reformatted from a Windows based client or TerraBlock
server for the Normal local user login to work properly on Windows XP.
The following error message "Disk Was Not Ejected Properly" is a known issue
not a bug. If a Volume gets renamed in the TerraBlock Manager and the
partition is not updated accordingly then you will receive this message.
o To change this correctly, see "Change Volume" in the TerraBlock User's
Guide.
When copying a file from a Multi-user Write volume to a Windows 7 system, you
may receive a Windows Security warning.
22
Volumes created with GUID partition table in Intel Mac Leopard will not mount
properly through MacDrive on Windows
o Do not use GUID partition table when formatting HFS+ (Mac OS
Extended) volumes. If you have iPartition software on a Mac system you
can convert the volume from GUID to Apple Partition Map.
Drive Rescan after mount or un-mount in TerraBlock Manager may take a long
time if there are numerous devices in Disk Management. This will not stop the
user from performing other actions in the TerraBlock Manager, or working with
other applications.
Some OMFI files will not save properly to a volume that is greater than 2TB in
size, when created and used on a 32bit Windows operating system.
o Use a volume under 2TB, or use MXF media type.
When mounting volumes on Windows XP, messages regarding new devices that
have been installed may appear, asking you to reboot the system.
o Cancel and disregard these messages.
Under certain circumstances, Final Cut Pro may hang on launch after using a
Single-user Write volume as a Final Cut Pro scratch disk, then switching the
volume to Multi-user write and continuing to use it as a scratch disk.
o This is an issue that can be encountered when using MacDrive 8 on the
TerraBlock Server. This problem does not occur when using MacDrive 9.
Apple LSI Fibre Channel HBA: On a Mac OS 10.7.x (Lion) fibre attached client,
23
after the Multi-user Write volume mounts on the desktop, multiple instances of
the Tools drive repeatedly mount on the desktop.
o The Apple LSI Fibre Channel Card is not supported for use with Mac OS
10.7.x (Lion).
o The Apple LSI Fibre Channel Card is supported for use with Mac OS
10.6.8 only.
You receive the following error when attempting to launch Terrablock Manager:
'Facilis File Mount API is not installed, Make sure you are running with admin
access
o Re-name the Terrablock Manager executable to its default name
Terrablock Manager.app and / or move it back to its original location
inside the TerraBlock Manager folder. Create an alias to the TerraBlock
Manager and move / re-name it if necessary.
When batch digitizing in an Avid to a Multi-user Write volume you may see the
error Digitize aborted due to lack of storage space.
o Click OK to continue through the error.
In an Avid shared environment, file system busy messages may occur when
attempting to write to Multi-user write volumes through Symphony/Media
Composer and/or -36 errors may occur when attempting to copy project folders
at the Finder level when the Mac host name contains illegal characters.
o Remove illegal characters (|:\?*><) from the Computer name in
Sharing Setup.
Using an HFS formatted Multi-User Write volume can cause filesystem busy
errors due to the shared project bin lock being set incorrectly
Issue only occurs when attempting to save the bin while the lock icon is
red
Working with Avid Project and Bin sharing: Only specific Avid versions are
supported together in a shared project environment.
(Example: Avid 5.0.3 is not compatible for project sharing with Avid
version 6.0)
File System Emulation Mode does not enable with Avid Unity client installed.
o Uninstall Avid Unity MediaNet client, reboot and launch the TerraBlock
Manager to install Facilis software.
Digidesign Pro Tools prior to version 9.0 is not supported for use with Multi-user
write volumes.
24
When opening shared projects from the root of a volume in Avid Media
Composer, there can be a long delay depending on the amount of files on the
volume. This is a result of the Avid software scanning all files and directories on
the volume.
o Create a sub-directory on the root level of the volume for Avid projects.
Alternatively create a separate volume specifically for Avid projects.
Using Avid Media Composer 5.6.3 or 6.x, when trying to create a shared project
on a Multi-User Write HFS formatted volume, you receive the following error
from Media Composer: Mac Error -36 (I/O Error)
o Make sure Multi-User Write volumes are formatted NTFS for use with
these versions of Avid Media Composer
Multi-user Write volumes will no longer mount in Mac 10.7.x (Lion) after
installing Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 or 5.5.3.1. Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 or
5.5.3.1only supports local storage on Mac OS 10.7.x. Refer to the Media
Composer 5.5.3 release notes for additional detail.
o To mount Multi-User Write volumes on Mac OS 10.7.x use Avid Media
Composer 5.5.2
o Contact Facilis customer support for more details.
Folder aliases, shell scripts, zip files and other applications will not function
correctly when attempting to access or run the alias, script or application from
a Multi-user write volume that is mounted on Macintosh clients.
o When attempting to work with folder aliases, shell scripts, zip files or
other applications located on a TerraBlock volume and mounted on a
Macintosh client, use HFS+ formatted Single-user Write volumes.
Volumes may not un-mount properly if any volume is in the process of changing
from Single-user Write to Multi-user Write. If the volume(s) remains on the
desktop but appears un-mounted in the TerraBlock Manager, reboot the Mac
system before proceeding.
25
Linux
After launching the TerraBlock Manager using the 'sudo' command, you do
not see the Tools Drive and you receive a message, Can not connect to
TerraBlock Server. Verify that the Tools volume is mounted.
o The TerraBlock Manager must be run as the root user. In a Linux
terminal, switch to the root user using the su command. From the
same terminal that you are running as root, start the TerraBlock
Manager using the launch.sh file.
Linux fibre channel connected clients will hang when starting the TerraBlock
Manager if the TerraBlock Server cannot be contacted.
o Verify the TerraBlock Server is operational and then reboot the Linux
client.
After mounting a Multi-user Write volume for the first time, you may receive
an error when opening the volume: You do not have the permissions
necessary to view the contents of "<volume>".
o Reboot the Linux client.
The Linux Manager does not launch on 32 bit Linux OS: Receive the error:
cannot execute binary file
o Linux TerraBlock Manager requires a 64 bit OS.
26
Copies through the Linux OS to TerraBlock volumes may stall and fail to
complete.
o asd
o Run the appropriate (4Gbit or 8Gbit) Linux Settings registry key on
the TerraBlock server. The keys are located in the installed Utilities
folder. (C:\Program Files\Facilis\TerraBlock\Utilities\Linux Atto
Settings for Terrablock)
Linux fibre channel connected clients will hang when starting the Linux
TerraBlock Manager if the TerraBlock Server cannot be contacted.
o This situation is an error condition and will occur in cases where the
Server Enclosure is turned on and running but the SMDrive service is
not running or has encountered a problem and has stopped running.
