ErlangCalculator

ThispagewassetupforthoseneedingtoperformroughcalculationsonresourcemanagementusingErlangBand
ErlangCcalculations.ThisworksheetusestheErlangBandErlangCequationstocalculatetheappropriategradeof
service(GOS).Entereachoftheparameters,thenpressthe"Calculate"buttonatthebottomofeachsection.

CalculatingErlangBBlockingProbability
Inthissection,youneedtoentertheofferedloadtothesystem,whichistypicallydenoted"A",andismeasuredin
erlangs.Youalsoneedtoenterthenumberofavailablechannelsinthesystem.Forexample,youmighthaveacellular
systeminwhichonetowerprovides27channels.Ifthesystemishandling200calls/hour,andeachcalllasts6minutes,
thiswouldcorrespondtoanofferedloadof(200calls/hour)*(1hour/60minutes)*(6minutes/call)=20erlangs.Wecould
thenpluginthevalueof"20"(fortheofferedload)intothefirstbox,andthevalueof27(forthenumberofavailable
channels)intothesecondbox,thenpress"CalculateBlockingProbability".Thiswouldgiveusananswerof0.0268.This
meansthattheprobabilityofachannelbeingblockedforanyparticularcallerwouldbe0.0268,or2.68%.

CalculatingErlangBOfferedLoad
Inthissection,youneedtoenterthedesiredgradeofservice(GOS)forthesystemandthenumberofavailablechannels
(C).Thegradeofservice(GOS)isnothingmorethantheprobabilityofacallbeingblockedforagivenofferedloadas
wellasthenumberofavailablechannels.Thisscriptwillcalculatetheofferedloadwhichprovidesthegradeofservice,
giventhenumberofavailablechannels.Forexample,youmighthaveacellularsysteminwhichonetowerprovides43
channels.Ifthedesiredgradeofserviceis0.02,wecouldthenpluginthevalueof"0.02"(forthegradeofservice)into
thefirstbox,andthevalueof43(forthenumberofavailablechannels)intothesecondbox,thenpress"Calculate
OfferedLoad".Thiswouldgiveusananswerof33.758.Thismeansthatasystemwith43channelswishingtoprovidea
0.02gradeofservice(or2%blockingprobability)wouldbeabletohandle33.758erlangsofofferedload.Iftheoffered
loadincreasesbeyondthis,thenthegradeofservice,meaningtheblockingprobability,wouldrapidlyincrease.

CalculatingErlangCDelayProbability
Thissectioncalculatestheprobabilitythatacallwillbedelayedbeforeitisserviced.ThisisPr(Delay>0).Youneedto
entertheamountofofferedloadtothesystem,inerlangs,aswellasthenumberofavailablechannels.Thisscriptwill
thencalculatetheprobabilityofadelayoccurringgiventhesetwoparameters.Forexample,considerasystemwithan
offeredloadof15erlangsandwith25availablechannels.Plugin"15"(theofferedload)intothefirstboxand"25"(the
numberofavailablechannels)intothesecondbox.Thenpress"CalculateDelayProbability".Thiswouldprovidea
probabilitythatthedelayisgreaterthan0of0.01243.
