RESULTANT OF COPLANAR FORCES

PARALLEL FORCE SYSTEM

SOLVED PROBLEMS

{ Understanding :
Moment means force x perpendicular distance, e.g. for 40 N, moment of 40N
about A is 40 1, since the moment is clockwise we will consider it as negative.
Also a Modulus sign is taken while applying varignons because we have
mentioned that Resultant is at a DISTANCE d from A.
Distance is always positive. }

IMPORTANT :
How will we decide the direction of R?
From value of resultant i.e. R() it is clear that R has to be down.
Now it can be to the left of A or right of A because distance can be to the left or right.
Possibility is :

Here both R have direction. But how to decide which one is correct?
Look at eq. (1) in problem above, It clearly indicates that Moment of resultant R d =
ve

{i.e. 190}

Negative moment means that it is a clockwise moment.

Now look at above diagram , which of The Resultant generates a clockwise moment about
A ?
The one to the right generates a clockwise moment about A.
Hence, it is correct one. Every problem of Varignons theorem, we have to show direction of
resultant.

SOLVED PROBLEMS

(2)

d = 2.078 m above O.

. Answer

{Understanding :
There is no need to find for resultant as R has to be on side, according sign of

FX .

Here again, R can be above O or below O,

R
Fig (i) direction of R is obtained from previous equation (1)
See equation (2), it is clear that (R d), i.e. Moment by resultant is positive (i.e. 166).
Since positive moment is generated in anticlockwise direction, hence anticlockwise moment.
Hence in fig. (i), R above O, produces anticlockwise moment. }
