3) Sorupa Saram
By Sorupananda
Translated by T. V. Venkatasubramanian, Robert Butler and David Godman
Edited by David Godman
Sorupananda was a powerful Tamil Guru who lived several centuries ago. His abili
ty to silence the minds of his
visitors was praised on several occasions by Ramana Maharshi. Though his chief
disciple, Tattuvaraya, wrote
prolifically, Sorupananda himself only wrote one small work: Sorupa Saram. Sri
Ramana thought so highly of
this work, he included it on a list of six must-read books that he gave to Anna
malai Swami in the 1930s.
The text itself comprises 102 Tamil verses in which Sorupananda uncompromisingly
declares his own enlightenment
and then attempts to answer questions on the implications of being in this state
.
The original Tamil text has been out of print for decades, and it is unlikely to
be reprinted again. We have
therefore included both the original Tamil verses and an English translation of
them in this new edition of
the work. There is also a twenty-page introduction by David Godman that details
all the known biographical
information about both Sorupananda and Tattuvaraya, and the Guru-disciple relat
ionship that existed between them.
Customers in India can order from the Sri Ramanasramam Book Depot.

1) The Vedaparayana
Twice daily, in front of the Maharshi, the Vedas were recited. Since the Maharsh
i often spoke highly about
the value of listening to these chants, it continues today at his tomb in Sri R
amanasramam. In this book we
find the English translations of the various scriptures that are recited daily.
2)Sri Devikalottara
One of the Upa-agamas highly valued by the Maharshi, so much so that he spontane
ously translated it into Tamil
verse during his stay in the Virupaksha Cave. It contains Lord Shiva's instruct
ion to Parvati, outlining the
direct Advaita path to liberation. This edition contains the Maharshi's Tamil v
erses, original Sanskrit text
with English transliteration and English translation.
pp.91
3) Bhagavad Gita
This is an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita by Arthur Osborne and G.V.Ku
lkarni. The contents of this book
were first published serially in The Mountain Path (the quarterly journal from
Sri Ramanasramam) from April 1965
to October 1969. They were later published in book form by the Ashram in June 1
973. In this second edition, the
Sanskrit text and an English transliteration have been included with the English
translation.
Also included are two new appendices. The first is the Bhagavad Gita Saram, the
42 verses selected by Bhagavan which
reveal the essence of the Gita. The second is a facsimile of the typed pages of
Alan Chadwick's (Sadhu Arunachala)
translation of the Gita Saram together with Sri Bhagavan's handwritten correcti
ons.
Bhagavan would often quote verses from the Bhagavad Gita and comment on their me
aning when speaking to devotees.
For spiritual seekers the present English translation is a wonderful resource.
