TRABAJOS EN CALIENTE / HOT WORK

1.0 PURPOSE
These standards are established for the purpose of
ensuring and taking all necessary precautions to
prevent accidents caused by any activity that
generates sparks, flame or ignition sources.
1.0
PROPOSITO
Proveer estndares que aseguren, se hayan tomado
medidas de precaucin con el fin de evitar accidentes
causados por cualquier actividad que genere chispas,
llamas o fuentes de ignicin.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure applies to all operating areas and
offices s for all employees and contractors.

Este procedimiento se aplica a todas las reas
operativas y oficinas de, as como a todos sus
empledos y contratistas.
3.0 DEFINITIONS
Hot Work Areas
Every area where hot work is to be
performed. It can be located inside or outside
shops.

Es toda rea donde se va a realizar un trabajo
en caliente. Estas pueden estar dentro o fuera
de los talleres.
Fire Observer
The person designated to watch the area on
a permanent basis during all phases of hot
work.
Observador de Fuego
Es la persona designada para quedar en la
observacin permanente del rea durante
todas las fases del trabajo en caliente.
Shop
The area where hot work and other

mechanical work is carried out on a
permanent and routine basis. It is an area
that cannot be mobilized to another place.
Taller
rea donde se realiza permanentemente y de
manera rutinaria trabajos en caliente y otro tipo
de trabajos mecnicos. Es una rea no
susceptible de movilizarse.
Hot Work
Any work involving or resulting in open flame
or sparks, or generating heat, that can make
contact with combustible or flammable
materials or with equipment or machinery
involving their use and which may cause fire
or explosion.
Trabajo en Caliente
Es aquel que involucra o genera llama abierta,
chispas o desprendimiento de calor, que
puedan entrar en contacto con materiales
combustibles o inflamables; o con equipos o
maquinarias que los contengan y puedan
ocasionar un incendio o explosin.
4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
Workers must
Keep their work area free of any fire hazards
(accumulation
of
flammable
and/or
combustible material). Also, they must know
the location of fire fighting equipment and their
use.
Inspect their equipment before starting any hot
work and inform their supervisor about any
failure.
Correctly use the appropriate Personal
Protective Equipment, bearing in mind the
provisions set forth in this document.
Obtain authorization to carry out hot work
before starting to work.
Notify their immediate supervisor before
carrying out any hot work.
The Fire Observer must:

RESPONSABILIDADES
Trabajadores
Asegurar que su rea de trabajo se encuentre
libre de riesgos de incendio (acumulacin de
materiales inflamables y/o combustibles). As
mismo debern conocer la localizacin de los
equipos contra incendios y como utilizarlos.
Inspeccionar sus equipos antes de iniciar los
trabajos en caliente y notificar a su supervisor de
algn defecto encontrado.
Usar correctamente el EPP apropiado, de
acuerdo a lo especificado en el presente
documento.
Obtener la Autorizacin Para Trabajos en
Caliente antes de iniciar el trabajo.
Notificar a su supervisor inmediato antes de
iniciar algn trabajo en caliente.

Be familiar with the location and use of fire

alarms, fire-fighting equipment, first-aid
equipment, radios and telephones for
emergency cases.
Inspect the hot work area before and 30
minutes after the performance of work, making
sure that potential fire or explosion hazards
have been removed and there are no flamereactivating points.
Watch and put out any fire or hot point
resulting from the work.
Move any potential fire or explosion hazard 20
m away from the hot work area. If such a
potential hazard cannot be removed, then it
must be covered with fire-resistant material.
Properly use the appropriate Personal
Protective Equipment, bearing in mind the
provisions set forth in this document.
Carrying a fire extinguisher, the Fire Observer
must inspect the area where hot work was
carried out 30 minutes after the end of the
work.
Supervisors must
Make sure that all the personnel under their
responsibility are familiar with, understand and
comply with these standards.
Inspect the work area and the hot work
equipment and make sure it is in good
operating conditions and its use is safe.
Identify the fire hazards and take the
appropriate corrective actions.
Complete the authorization for hot works
assuring all precautions have been completed
Fill in, sign and submit the original
authorization to Loss Prevention before
starting the hot work.
Make sure to keep acopy authorization of the
Hot Work Authorization in the work area.
Loss Prevention must

Provide advice regarding the standards
governing the performance of hot work.
Check compliance with these standards on a
random and sufficiently frequent basis.
5.0 PROCEDURE / GUIDELINE
General
1. Before performing any hot work, the pertinent
Authorization must be given.
Conocer la ubicacin y uso de alarmas contra

incendios, equipos de lucha contra incendios,
equipos de primeros auxilios, radios y telfonos
para casos de emergencia.
Inspeccionar el rea de trabajo en caliente antes
y 30 minutos despus de los trabajos verificando
el retiro de peligros potenciales de incendio o
explosin y puntos de reactivacin de llamas.
Observar y extinguir cualquier fuego o punto
caliente producto del trabajo.
Retirar fuera de un radio de 20 metros cualquier
peligro potencial de incendio o explosin. En
caso no pudieran ser retirados debern ser
cubiertos con elementos resistentes al fuego.
Usar correctamente el EPP apropiado, de
acuerdo a lo especificado en el presente
documento.
Provisto de un extintor, revisar el rea donde se
efectuaron los trabajos en caliente 30 minutos
despus que las actividades hayan terminado.
Supervisores
Asegurar que todo el personal a su cargo
conozca, entienda
y cumpla el presente
estndar.
Inspeccionar el rea de trabajo, as como los
equipos utilizados para trabajo en caliente y
asegurarse de que estn libres de defectos y sea
seguro su uso.
identificar todos los peligros de incendio y tomar
las medidas correctivas pertinentes.
Completar la autorizacin para Trabajos en
Caliente y asegurarse que se hayan completado
todas las precauciones.
Asegurarse de mantener en el rea de trabajo
una copia de lacopia de la AAutorizacin Para

Prevencin de Prdidas

5.0
PROCEDIMIENTO / GUIA
Generales
1. Antes de iniciar cualquier trabajo en caliente,
se obtendr primero la Autorizacin respectiva.
2. Se exceptan de la Autorizacin las reas
diseadas y designadas para tal fin (ejemplo:
talleres, etc)

2. The areas designed and assigned for that
purpose (example: shops, etc) do not need
Authorization.
3. The work area and the equipment must be
inspected before, during and after the
performance of work, in order to detect every
substandard condition.
4. Every potential fire or explosion hazard, such
as combustible material, paints, oils, greases,
solvents, compressed gas, powdered metal,
volatile fumes or gases, and explosives, must
be taken 20 m away from the work area.
5. No hot work must begin if the Fire Observer is
not present. The Fire Observer must make
sure that any potential fire or explosion hazard
has been controlled. The work can only start
after these precautions have been taken.
6. The Fire Observer must have a fire
extinguisher in operating condition, which
must be placed at least 2 meters away from
the work being performed and must face into
the wind.
7. In those areas where it is difficult to remove
potential fire or explosion hazards, these
hazards must be isolated using fire-resistant
protection (folding screens).
8. All hot work performed outdoors must be
suspended if it starts to rain; however, it can
be resumed if appropriate covers and
ventilation are made available.
9. The following is the personal protective
equipment to be used on a mandatory basis
for the performance of hot work:
Safety helmet
Helmet adjustable welding mask with
appropriate glass filter
Chrome-tanned leather protective clothing
(jacket/pants or apron, cap, slippers, and
elbow-level gloves).
Steel-capped safety shoes
Breather with metal fume filters
10. The following is the personal protective
equipment to be used on a mandatory basis
for the performance of grinding work:
Safety helmet.
Helmet-adjustable grinding mask.
Safety glasses, goggle-type.
Leather protective clothing (jacket/pants or
apron and gloves).
Steel-capped safety shoes.
Breather with metal fume filters.
11. The personal protective equipment mentioned
above must be used both by the welder or
grinder as well as by the helper.

inspeccionar el rea de trabajo y los equipos
con la finalidad de detectar toda condicin subestndar.
4. Se debe retirar fuera de un radio de 20 metros
todo peligro potencial de incendio o explosin
como: materiales combustibles, pinturas,
aceites, grasas, solventes, gases comprimidos,
metales en polvo, vapores o gases explosivos
y explosivos.
5. Ningn trabajo en caliente se iniciar si no se
encuentra presente el Observador de Fuegos el
cual se asegurar que se tenga controlado
cualquier peligro potencial de incendio o
explosin. Solamente luego de haber tomado
dichas precauciones se podr iniciar el trabajo.
6. El observador de fuegos contar con extintor
operativo el cual se colocar a 2 metros como
mnimo de los trabajos y en un punto opuesto
al sentido de la direccin del viento.
7. En reas donde sea difcil el evacuar los
peligros potenciales de incendio o explosin,
se proteger aislando dichos peligros con
elementos resistentes al fuego (biombos).
8. Todo trabajo en caliente al aire libre debe
suspenderse si se dan condiciones de lluvia,
sin embargo puede continuarse si se cuenta
con cobertores y ventilacin adecuada.
9. El equipo de proteccin personal de uso
obligatorio para trabajos en caliente es el
siguiente:
Casco de seguridad.
Careta de soldar, con filtros de vidrios
adecuados.
Ropa de proteccin de cuero cromado
(casaca/pantaln o mandil, gorra, escarpines
y guantes hasta el codo).
Zapatos de seguridad con punta de acero.
Respirador con filtros para humos metlicos.
10. El equipo de proteccin personal de uso
obligatorio para trabajos de esmerilado es el
siguiente:
Casco de seguridad.
Careta de esmerilar.
Lentes de seguridad, tipo googles.
Ropa de proteccin de cuero (casaca /
pantaln o mandil y guantes).
Zapatos de seguridad con punta de acero.
Respirador con filtros para humos metlicos.
11. El equipo de proteccin personal anteriormente
mencionado debe ser utilizado tanto para el
soldador o esmerilador como para su ayudante.

impregnada con gasolina, petrleo, grasas,

12. Clothes must not be impregnated with
gasoline, petroleum, greases, oil, or other
combustible or flammable material.
13. The bottom of the trouser legs must not be
inserted into the leg section of the safety
shoes.
14. Pockets and cuffs must be kept closed to
prevent sparks or hot slag from falling in.
Furthermore, no flammable or combustible
material must be kept inside the pockets.
15. If hot work is carried out at heights or within
confined spaces, the relevant procedures of
Minera Empresa S.R.L. must be complied
with.
16. Before starting any hot work in tanks, ponds,
containers or pipes that have contained fuel or
flammable liquids, the appropriate steps must
be taken to ensure that they are empty and
that they have been properly drained,
ventilated and washed.
17. Protective or folding screens must be used on
a mandatory basis so that the personnel is not
exposed to arc flames, sparks, fire, pieces of
hot metal or other flammable, combustible or
similar material.
18. Oxycutting equipment must include flame
anti-return valves in both hoses going to the
cylinder. The accessories such as tongs,
cables, and joints must be in good operating
conditions.
19. The oxycutting equipment hoses must be
pressure-fastened to their connections and not
with clamps, and must be of the same color as
the cylinder to which they are connected.
20. Regarding the cylinders, the provisions set
forth in the Compressed Gas Standards of
Minera Empresa S.R.L. must be complied
with.
21. Welding machines must be properly
grounded.
22. Electric arc welding areas must be visually
isolated from the remaining work environment.
23. Appropriate ventilation must be provided.
During the performance of work in closed
environments in shops, fume extraction and
ventilation systems must be available.
24. All workers involved in the performance of hot
work, including supervisors, must be trained in
Fire Fighting Techniques. Depending on
whether or not the work involves specific risks,
this training will also include training in Work
at Heights, Confined Spaces and LockOut / Tag-Out Procedures.
25. Notices with the following warning must be
placed in the event the work is suspended for

No debe introducirse la basta del pantaln,
dentro de la caa de los zapatos de seguridad.
Los bolsillos y puos deben quedar cerrados
para evitar alojar chispas o escorias calientes.
Asimismo no debe mantenerse en los bolsillos
material inflamable o combustible.
Si los trabajos en caliente se realizan en altura
o en un espacio confinado, se debe dar
cumplimiento a los procedimientos respectivos
de Minera Empresa S.R.L.
Antes de realizar un trabajo en caliente en
tanques, estanques, recipientes o tuberas que
hayan contenido combustibles o lquidos
inflamables debe verificarse que se encuentren
vacos, purgados, ventilados y lavados
adecuadamente.
Para evitar la exposicin del personal a la
llama del arco, chispas, fuego, pedazos de
metal caliente u otros materiales inflamables,
combustibles o similares, se dispondr
obligatoriamente
el
uso
de
pantallas
protectoras o biombos.
El equipo de oxicorte debe contar con vlvulas
antiretorno de llama en las dos lneas hacia los
cilindros. Los elementos accesorios como
tenazas, cables, uniones deben estar en
perfectas condiciones operativas.
Las mangueras del equipo de oxicorte debe
estar aseguradas a sus conexiones por presin
y no con abrazaderas y ser del mismo color del
cilindro al cual est conectada.
En lo referente a los cilindros debe cumplirse lo
estipulado en el Estndar para Gases
Comprimidos de Minera Empresa S.R.L.
Las mquinas soldadoras debern contar con
su respectiva lnea a tierra.
Las reas de soldadura de arco elctrico deben
encontrarse aisladas visualmente del resto del
ambiente de trabajo.
Se proveer de ventilacin adecuada. Durante
los trabajos en ambientes cerrados en talleres
se dispondr de sistemas de extraccin de
humos y ventilacin.
Todos los trabajadores involucrados en los
trabajos en caliente incluyendo la supervisin
debe estar entrenado en Lucha Contra
Incendios, dependiendo si el trabajo involucra
riesgos especficos el entrenamiento incluir
tambin Trabajos en Altura, Espacios
Confinados y Sistema de Bloqueo de
Seguridad (Lock out/Tag out).
Se colocar avisos que indiquen Peligro,
Material Caliente, si los trabajos son
paralizados por espacios prolongados.

displayed in a visible place in the work area.
27. Any hot work could be stopped if the
conditions under which the Authorization was
given have changed. Example: Gas leak,
fuel spill, etc.

conditions are reestablished and a new Hot
Work Authorization is given.
