Instruments: CLERMONT-FERRAND Rotating Bipolar

Forceps and Scissors

In addition to observing basic surgical

principles, the choice of the correct HF
instruments and devices is essential for the
success of minimally invasive, laparoscopic
interventions.
During an intervention, the surgeon must be
able to grasp different tissue structures, expose
the target organ in order to operate on it
(cutting/dissection), and stem bleeding (suturing
and hemostasis). The better these functions can
be tackled with a single instrument, the less
often the surgeon needs to change instruments,
which translates to considerable facilitation of
the intervention and time savings.
KARL STORZ has taken up the challenge of
satisfying the special requirements associated
with minimally invasive surgery, and to this
end has developed the CLERMONT-FERRAND
rotating, bipolar (ROBI) instruments in
cooperation with Prof. Wattiez (Strasbourg).
All instruments in the ROBI range feature
a modular construction and can be rotated
360. They are easy to use, easy to clean, and
autoclavable.

RoBi bipolar grasping forceps

In order to comply with the different

requirements and anatomic conditions, the jaws
of the ROBI grasping forceps are available in
different designs and sizes.
Large-toothed jaws are perfectly suited for
grasping thicker and stronger tissues, whereas
jaws with smaller teeth are considerably
better for handling more delicate structures.

Fenestrated jaws offer the advantage that even

structures which are difficult to grasp can be
securely gripped.
All of the instruments can be rotated 360 to
allow the surgeon optimal grasping options,
even from difficult access angles and positions.
This function is particularly advantageous when
the single-jointed forceps are used, as it allows
optimal positioning of the jaws in the operating
site.
Dissection function

Grasping function
The use of retractors in laparoscopy is not
always practical or possible. Consequently, it is
important for the surgeon to have an instrument
at his disposal with which he can not only grasp
the tissue precisely, but with which the tissue
can also be safely retracted from the operating
site.

The standard instrument generally employed

for dissection is the slender KELLY grasping
forceps, which is of course also part of the
CLERMONT-FERRAND range. In addition, we
have also included particularly slender and
extra-flat jaws in order to provide instruments
suited for dissection in all anatomic conditions,
including the most difficult ones.
The joint mechanism of the ROBI instruments
provides the surgeon with natural, tactile
feedback via the handle and thus allows him
to judge how much force needs to be exerted.
According to Professor Wattiez optimal
exposure and dissection of the tissue thus
become tangible and possible.

KARL STORZ 96112013 LAP 45 15.0 02/2015/EW

Identification of the tissue structures by means

of dissection is essential for the minimization of
risks in precision surgery.

In addition to the double-jointed jaws, which

simplify the handling of delicate tissues and
vessels such as the urethra and the fallopian
tubes, the CLERMONT-FERRAND range also
includes robust, single-jointed jaws, which

RoBi bipolar scissors

Cutting function
In order to meet the requirements of the
diverse tissue structures also during the
cutting procedure, we have included curved
METZENBAUM scissors in the CLERMONTFERRAND range in addition to the straight
scissors as well as a toothed jaw insert for
tissue structures which are difficult to grasp.
Coagulation function

facilitate dissection in critical areas where it is

important to keep the trauma to a minimum.
They are employed in oncologic interventions
such as the dissection of lymph nodes.

Coagulation function
The use of bipolar current has considerable
advantages in comparison with unipolar current.
The applied current flows between the branches
of the instrument, which are insulated by a
ceramic layer, and does not have to find a path
through the patients body to reach a neutral
electrode. With the aim of offering the highest
operational safety, the ROBI instruments were
designed and refined for use with the patientfriendly bipolar HF technique.

KARL STORZ 96112013 LAP 45 15.0 02/2015/EW

In contrast to conventional bipolar forceps, the

grasping forceps of the ROBI range, thanks

The bipolar ROBI scissors were also developed

especially for use with HF energy and permit
both coagulation and mechanical cutting in the
area already coagulated. As soon as the color of
the tissue starts to become pink again, i.e., the
tissue is perfused, mechanical cutting should be
interrupted and coagulation restarted.

Conclusion
Maximizing the quality of laparoscopic
interventions depends on the number and range
of functions made available to the surgeon.
With the ROBI grasping forceps, he can use
a single instrument to grasp, expose, dissect,
and coagulate. ROBI scissors also offer
the possibility to combine coagulation and
mechanical cutting.
The ROBI system can easily be disassembled
which means that inserts can be exchanged
quickly to fulfill surgical requirements, even
during the operation. This multifunctionality
optimizes the intervention, making it simpler,
quicker, and safer.

to their tactile feedback, allow the surgeon to

change the pressure applied to the tissue and
thus the impedance, and in this way thermal
spread can be regulated.
