Introduction
A site visit was organized on the 26 th of June 2015 by our
Measurement 1 lecturer Ms Ang Fuey Lin. Before we were allowed to
visit the site, we were given a weeks notice to prepare a safety helmet
to ensure our safety for the site visit. During the day of the visit, we
are asked to arrive at Taylors University at 9:00 a.m. sharp as the
meeting point. The site was roughly 30 minutes away from our
University and it is located at Bukit Jalil.
When we arrived at the site, we were given a 15 minute
briefing from the project manager of the site about the project they are
currently handling which costs roughly, RM21.5 million and for this
project, they had to construct the biggest pilecap their company has
ever made which is 24BP1200A.
After a short introduction about the project they were
undertaking, we were given another short briefing about the safety
precautions we have to take while surveying the site as the condition
of the soil for this project was quite muddy, we are to be careful when
walking around the site to ensure we do not slip and fall which could
lead to a lot of problems.
When the briefing was completed, we were finally given the
tour on the site.

There are also several advantages and disadvantages of reinforced

Photos and Description

Temporary work:

Temporary work which acts as

place for the workers to relax
and take shelter when the
condition of the weather has
become unfavourable.

Temporary work which acts

as a rest room for the works
as there are no public toilets
near the vicinity of the
construction site.

Temporary work for the

drainage system as there are
a lot of water around the site
which has to be removed.

Scaffoldings which are

temporary platforms for the
workers which helps gain
excess to the place and helps
support them as well as the
materials.

Plants and tools used:

A crane is used in this

construction site and its
function is to move heavy
objects, typically suspended.

Excavators are also found on

this site which are used for
earth digging and loading
the excavated materials into
the loading trucks to either
for disposal or used later.

This
welding
generator
provides electrical current to
perform welding.

A bar bending machine is used

to bend the reinforcement
bars into all shapes and
angles. We manage to catch a
glimpse on how is the machine
used on site

already been placed on the
column and is ready for
concrete to be poured into the
formwork.

how the concrete cover is
made as they were just
putting on the final touch for
the concrete cover.

Conclusion
After the trip has ended and I have gained some new
experience about how the real construction work is carried out, I
realised that working at the construction site differs from just learning
the theory of it. This is because we tend to omit the chance of bad
weather conditions and the dangers of working at the site exist.
This site visit gave me a great learning experience as it helped
me in my imagination of how the tools are used for construction as
well as allow me to see how a real construction site functions. They
have also taught me the importance of safety as without it during site
visit, a lot of accidents could occur and cause fatal injury.
In addition, I have learned to identify various tools and
construction materials we have asked our guide about the materials
that piqued our interest as went along the way.
In conclusion, the site visit has helped me better my
understanding on what the task of a quantity surveyor is at a

construction site as well as the risks I will face in the future as a

quantity surveyor. Overall, it was a great experience to go to an actual
site which can help better my understanding as well as my
imagination.

Objective:
Understand the basics of the construction process.
Understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in
comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on
site.
Exposure to actual working environment on site including
uncertainty circumstances e.g. weather.
Ability to communicate with the construction team members on
site and to see the importance of teamwork in the building team.
Witness the usage of construction equipment on site including
mechanical plants.
Explore and identify various types of building materials and
technology on site.
Awareness of the importance of safety on site and understanding
of safety problems and site conditions.
Recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced
concrete frame works.
