Schlick builds
bikes, rides in
TRAM

ST. MARTIN When Joe Schlick was
looking at a way to build a bike, he
didnt always go with the obvious answer.
I always heard that the solution
to the problem is outside the box,
Schlick said. These bikes are definitely outside the box.
Schlick has been building bikes
for almost 12 years at his home near
St. Martin.
Its fun because it is a challenge
for me to try and figure out how to
build them, Schlick said.
His interest in building bikes began when his two nephews, Greg and
Steve Lauer, were planning on building a two-person recumbent bike,
which allows the riders to sit like they
would in a recliner.
I finally asked Greg after two
years how progress was going,
Schlick said. He told me they hadnt
done anything.
Greg also had told his uncle he
was looking for someone to help build
the bike.
Thats where it all started. I began to think about it, Schlick said.
I was a dairy farmer at the time that
knew how to work with mechanical
things and weld. I thought maybe I
could build it.
Schlick came up with a plan for
the bike and showed it to his nephew.
I made the proposition that if
I built the bike, he could ride it with
me, Schlick said. He said he would.
Schlick immediately got started on
the bike. He found two old 10-speed
bikes, took the seats and handlebars
off of them and put a 4-foot linkage
between them. One bike was painted
red and the other was painted green.
It looked like something Red
Green would have on his show,
Schlick said.
Greg thought so, too, so he contacted the show to see if they could
have permission to call it the Red
Green Recumbent.
They ended up giving us permission, Schlick said. We even got to
meet Red Green in Willmar. It was a
real interesting experience.
Once the bike was finished,
Schlick and Greg rode it in the 2002
TRAM, (The Ride Across Minnesota)
which is a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, while
his wife, Mary Jo, stayed home and
milked the cows.
This year is my 23rd year riding in the TRAM, Schlick said. I
saw an ad on TV in 1990 about it, and
thought it would be fun to do. Its well
organized and I love the camaraderie.
There are a lot of repeat riders that are
now great friends I see once a year.
After riding the bike that year,
Schlick wanted to build something
different.
It was fun to ride that one, but I
knew we could build something better, Schlick said.
Finally, Schlick built a tricycle for two

people and added a one-wheel tagalong to fit one more person. Schlick
rode in the back with his brother, Jim,
and Greg riding in the front.
That was my claim to fame,
Schlick said. I started to get the reputation at the TRAM of being the only
one who builds his own bikes. People would come up to me and ask me
what I was riding that year.
After the three-person bike,
Schlick started building one-person
bikes.
For 2010, he completed a bike that
had front wheel drive, and in 2012, he
built one that looks a lot like a storebought bike.
That was the last one I had
made, Schlick said. I plan to ride it
again this year.
Even though he doesnt ride all of
the bikes anymore, Schlick still has
them housed in his garage.
They are all out there yet,
Schlick said. I like to call it my museum of bicycles of questionable design.
Schlick left for the five-day, 290mile TRAM ride again scheduled to
start in Pipestone on July 14, making
stops in Marshall, Redwood Falls, St.
Peter and New Prague and finish at
the Welch Village Ski Resort. He will
be riding with his brother, Jim, and his
daughter, Katie, 26.
They will each have their own
bikes, but mine will be the only one
that was built, Schlick said.

And build something better he did.

Schlick built a two-person, threewheel bike. The bike had one wheel in
the back and two in the front with the
riders sitting back to back.
The challenge with this bike for
Schlick was figuring out how to arrange the drive train with the riders
seated the way they were.
I ended up putting the bike chain
in a figure eight pattern, which allowed
both riders to pedal forward, Schlick
said. We could have had one of the
riders pedaling backward, but there
wouldnt be as much power there.
In 2004, Schlick worked on a
two-person bike again, but this one
had two wheels instead of three and
the riders were again seated back to
back.
It was hard to balance when we
were riding that bike, Schlick said.
But it was Gregs favorite bike.
After a year break, Schlick built
a two-wheel bike with the pedals
mounted where the front fork would
be.
It was something different,
Schlick said.
After riding it in 2006, his niece,
Jennifer Miller, approached Schlick
and asked him what he was planning
to build for the next year.
At that time, I had no idea,
Schlick said. But Jennifer thought I
should build a three-person bike.
A three-person bike was not easy
to build.
If we went three people long,
it would be too long, and if we went
three wide, it would be too wide,
Schlick said.
Schlick checks over his first bike he built, the Red Green Recumbent. This bike
was two 10-speed bikes with the handlebars and seats removed and a 4-foot
linkage between them.

What did you plant in your garden this year? We plant a variety of
garden produce; some of the crops are tomatoes, peppers, greens, summer and winter squash, beans, pumpkins, cucumbers, root crops, potatoes, melons, raspberries, popcorn, cut owers... Additionally, we have
a large herb garden with over 50 varieties of herbs that are used in our
line of jarred culinary herbs and herbal teas.
Is there anything new you tried this year? Why? We try planting new
things every year. This year some new crops are parsley root and several
different heirloom pepper, tomato and winter squash varieties.
What has been your biggest challenge with your garden this year?
There are so many variables in gardening, that each year is a challenge
with its own rewards. The early, excessive rains have been difcult in
some areas of our garden, forcing us to reseed some rows. We grow naturally without using chemicals, so pests are always challenging.
What do you enjoy most about gardening? Harvesting and selling our
goods at market is rewarding. Additionally, having delicious, nutritious
produce for our own consumption is why we originally started gardening.
Tell us your most useful gardening tip. Keep tomato plants healthy by
fertilizing properly throughout the growing season to reduce possibility
of diseases/blights.
SAUK CENTRE When most people plan themselves a summer vacation,

they go to the beach or head to Disneyland. Grace and Anna Westerman chose
a bit of a different route. They spent a
week traveling in a wagon train near
Jamestown, N.D.
Its a crazy and fun experience,
said Anna.
The girls live on a dairy farm south
of Sauk Centre with their parents, Scott
and Janell.
This was the second year that the
girls took part in wagon trail ride. The
girls originally found out about the trail
ride through a North Dakota resource
guide they had picked up at a horse expo.
We were hoping to plan some kind
of camping trip out in the Dakotas, and
then we came across this, said Grace.
Fort Seward Pioneer Trail celebrated
their 45 anniversary this year. The Trail
left on June 22 and returned June 28. The
wagon train is the only one that goes a
whole week, and still uses steel wheels
versus rubber tires on the wagons. About
150 people take part in the ride every
year, this year ranging in ages from 11
months to 81 years.
Its really a family get together,
said Grace. It doesnt matter your age or
where you come from.
There were people from 17 different
states, as well as Canada. Each group is
put together into a wagon family with
about 11 other people. The girls ended
up in an all-girls wagon except for their
wagon driver, Bob and Brooks, the farrier, who was gone most of the time helping people.
You kind of just get put in a wagon
together, said Grace with a laugh. They
become your instant friends.
The evening before the wagon train
left was when orientation happened. Everyone got a chance to know each other
and make supper together. By 8 a.m. the
next morning, everyone was packed up
in their wagons and started off.
The wagon train consisted of 11
wagons, along with riders on horses in
the back. They traveled an average of 15
miles each day before setting up camp.
The train was also followed by an ambulance.

At rst we thought the ambulance

was kind of unauthentic, said Anna.
But, its a really great safety precaution
to have because you never know what
could happen.
The girls were able to convince
some of their family to visit them for one
of the days and see what the life is like.
By the end of the week, the girls
were sad to see another year go in the
books. Parting with their wagon families
was one of the hardest parts.
You may be randomly thrown together, but by the end, everyone is sad
because they dont want to leave, said
Anna.
Theres no doubt about it, that we
will denitely be doing a third year, said
Grace.

What is your favorite recipe using garden produce?

Creamy Kohlrabi
8 to 12 kohlrabies, washed, peeled and sliced
4 Tbsp. butter
1/3 cup our
tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. white pepper
tsp. dill weed
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 cups chicken or vegetable stock
4 oz. shredded farmer or white cheddar cheese
Put prepared kohlrabi in a medium saucepan and cover with water.
Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer about 10 minutes or until
tender. Meanwhile in another saucepan, melt butter over medium high
heat. Stir in our and seasonings. Add stock and cook until thickened,
stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in cheese. Drain kohlrabi
and combine with sauce. Serve immediately.

The scope of work is the construction of a 30 unit Assisted
Living Facility. Commencement of the project is estimated for August 3rd, 2015.
The Legacy facility will be located at 622 East 7th Street,
Morris,Minnesota.
Each bid must be accompanied by a separate envelope
containing the bid form, completed bidder prequalication,
and certificate of insurance.
Bidders on this work will be
required to comply with bidder requirements, which are
explained in the specifications.
Owner reser ves the right to
reject any and all Bids.
Award, if made, shall be to
the lowest responsible Bidder
whose Bid is responsive to
the invitation and is most advantageous to the Owner, in
its sole and exclusive discretion, price and other factors
considered. The Owner may
reject a Bid as nonresponsive
if the prices bid are materially
unbalanced between the line
items or subline items. A Bid
is materially unbalanced
when it is based on prices
signicantly less than cost for
some work and prices which
are signicantly overstated in
relation to cost for other work,
and if there is a reasonable
doubt that the bid will result in
the lowest overall cost to the
Owner even though it may be
the low evaluated bid, or if it
