Audix Broadcast ADD9000 Radio Desk

On the radio desk, there is a mixer that combines a number of different sound
sources together and outputs those sound channels either to broadcast or to
record on computer.
All the connections have already been fixed so there is very little actual lead
handling to do. By default each channel is assigned to a different input and the
input can read above the top of each fader (these can be re-assigned if needed).
Channels
For instance, the channel fader to the left, is the fader for the
Telephone (indicated by the label TELE).
At the moment, the fader is at the bottom by the mark. The
figures on the right-hand side are the attenuation scale you want to
give that input source. So the higher the number, the less you will
hear the input. At 0 there is no attenuation and so that will give you
the loudest level.
At the top of this section there is a PLAY button. This is connected
so that if you are on a channel that is a playable machine (e.g. CD
or minidisk), by pressing the PLAY button, or indeed if you raise
the level of the fader above , the playable machine will start
playing.
Notice that at any level above the FADER OPEN light comes on.

This also functions as a PEAK level meter. It turns orange if the input is too high.
This is the control section at the top of each channel.
Starting from the bottom, we have the PFL button. This
stands for Pre Fade Listen, and as long as this button is
pressed this allows the producer to hear whatever is
coming through that input in the headphones without it
being output to record or to broadcast.
The FADER ENABLE makes the input machine start
playing as soon as the fader is above .
The RECORD button allows a sound source to be
recorded without going through the main output.
SHIFT allows the producer to pan the sound source left
and right.
EQ allows the producer to put either pre-defined EQ settings on a channel
TRIM attenuates the sound source levels. This needs to be used in conjunction
with the level meters to set the best levels for output.
AUX 1 put the sound source out to whatever is connected to Aux 1 output.
ASSIGN allows the producer to reassign which sound source goes through this
channel by select the sound source using the large red select control underneath
the select screen.
Readouts
Along the top of the Audix desk are various readouts. On the left of
the readouts is the CLOCK. This is linked to GPS to give the
producer accurate time.

Then we have the meter levels. The left-hand meter


gives you the level of either the monitor output, or the
PFL level if the PFL button is pressed. The PFL light will
also light up if this is the case.
The right-hand meter shows the producer the Studio Output.
To the right of this is the Record Level meters.

Finally, on the Readouts section, you have a


Select screen. This is used in conjunction with the
large red SELECT knob by the CONTROL
section below it. Turn the knob left and right to
change the channel number situated in the centre
of the screen, and press it to select that channel
to change any variables that channel might have
e.g. the dB level for that sound source. There is a
contrast control to the right of the Select screen to
change the contrast of the screen.
EQ
For each of the two settings there are four EQ dials: High
Frequency, then two Mid Frequency controls, the top one
selects a frequency and the bottom one specifies how much
that frequency is boosted and Low Frequency. Also, there is a
High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter. You set these up and
then you can call either one of these settings up from the EQ
Toggle switches on each channel.

Monitors
On the left-hand side of the monitor screen
there are 15 toggle buttons that specify
which monitors will take the output from the
desk
The first three relate to what is heard in the
Studio: the Desk Output, the Record
output, and Follow Monitors (which mimics
what is heard from the Control room
speakers).
The next four are external outputs. They
take the output to whatever is set up on
those external outputs.
The PFL button enables the Control room speakers to play what is normally
heard through the headphones when a channels PFL button is pressed
AUX OP plays the Auxilliary output through the control room speakers
DESK OP plays the output from the desk through the control room speakers
REC OP plays the record output through the control room speakers

MONO LSPKS plays the desk output as a mono output through the control room
speakers
STUDIO PRES TBK allows the Producer in the control room to talk back to the
Presenter only in the Studio through their headphones
STUDIO GUST TBK allows the Producer in the control room to talk back to all
the guests in the Studio through their headphones. So to communicate to
everyone in the Studio you need to press both STUDIO PRES TBK & STUDIO
GUST TBK buttons
The normal setup will be to have Studio Desk Output and Desk Output buttons
selected.
Headphone Volume Controls
Three sets of headphone volume controls: The first is the Producers
headphones & the second is the Producers guests headphones.
Mini channel display
This display shows which channel is currently selected. It also has SNAP 1 &
SNAP 2, which are default settings for the whole system. When either of these
are on the screen, changeable via the big red select control, pushing the white
button will activate this across the desk.
Monitor Volume controls
DIM reduces the control room speakers volume
CUT mutes the control room speakers
Volume Control adjusts the control room speakers volume
Controls
MIC CRM LIVE shows red when the Control Room
Producers mic is on
MIC STUDIO LIVE shows red when the Studio
presenters mic is on
RED CRM LIGHT switches the RED Control Room
Live light on
RED STUDIO LIGHT switches the RED Studio
Room Live light on
PSU FAULT switches all the speakers off in the

Control room
TELE DIVERT patches the telephone through to the desk
Contrast control
Brightens the lights on the monitor and control sections
Select Control
Changes the channel selection, and if pushed down will allow the producer to
change the gain on mics.
