Language teaching and learning in a virtual
classroom is language teaching at a
distance in real-time using state-of-the-art
Internet communication technology.
Text and voice chat, videos, whiteboarding,
web touring, screen sharing and other great
features ensure an outstanding learning
experience.
While virtual classrooms present teachers
with an exciting tool, it is important to use it
correctly. Therefore, we will be exploring the
various features always with an eye of their
usefulness in class.
We will also explore how best to the use of
Myngle teaching material and methodology.
Trainees will be encouraged to demonstrate
a teaching and learning activity which will
then be peer and trainer reviewed.

Description What you will learn

The LANCELOT course is a 60-80h training
course for language teachers over a 10 week
period to train language teachers in a range of
Internet communication tools for language
learning at a distance in real-time.
This course is the result of the 2-year project
LANCELOT, funded by the LEONARDO DA
VINCI, Language competence II, developed and
disseminated by 23 partners in 8 European
countries. It is certified and accredited by ICC
Europe – The Language Network.
The intensive training course comprises three
strands:
• methodology
• intercultural communicative competence
• technology
The methodology strand focuses on facilitating self-
directed learning in a virtual classroom
environment. It discusses teaching practise,
receptive and productive skills, and lesson
observations.

While virtual classrooms present teachers with
an exciting tool, it is important to use them
correctly. Therefore, we will be exploring the
various features always with an eye of its
usefulness in class.
The praxis of Intercultural Communicative
Competence is applied to the culture mix likely to
be expected in a live online setting. It focuses on
reassessment of one’s own culture with a view to
exploring others.

Pre-requisites
Language teaching professionals with a
pedagogical training and/ or with several years of
teaching experience. A technical skills analysis is
also required and needs to show a minimum of
computer literacy similar to the ECDL certification.

Description What will be assessed?

The LANCELOT assessment is the ultimate goal
of the trained and experienced live online
language teacher.
The evaluation of the LANCELOT trainee
assessment focuses on the two key assessment
tools involved:
• Observed Live Online Teaching
Practice (60%)
• Development Portfolio (40%)
The Development Portfolio is 40% of the overall
final mark. It is essentially a collection of work a
trainee has undertaken, with two additional
pieces of reflective writing to be submitted at the
end of learning block 5, and again at the end of
learning block 10. The trainee must complete at
least 80% of the work in order to fulfil the
minimum submission requirement.
The Observed Live Online Teaching Practice is
60% of the overall final mark. In order to receive
a favourable assessment of their live online
teaching practice, the trainees must prove their
worth on a number of levels. They must
demonstrate that they are in possession of social
skills (Professional Values and Practice) are
competent as a foreign language teacher
(Language Subject Knowledge and
Understanding) understand the significance of
ICC in an classroom context as well as in
general (ICC Subject Knowledge and
Understanding), are competent in handling live
online teaching tools (Technology Subject,
Knowledge and Understanding) posses
adequate lesson planning skills (Lesson
Planning and Target Setting) know how to
choose and use appropriate learning materials
(Teaching and Learning Materials) and are
capable of teaching circumspectly and
effectively, ie. drawing on different methods,
creating an adequate learning environment,
involving all learners etc. (Teaching).

At the time of the final assessment a 20min
observed teaching and learning activity is being
conducted which will be presented with a 1h lesson
plan.
After conducting the 20min learning activity the
trainee will hear a personal assessment by the
learners, their peers, the trainer reviews and in the
end the review of the external assessor. This
review is based on the following principles.
