Alternate Path Screens

Applications

Gravel-pack operations

Benefits and features

Maximizes gravel-packing
success by minimizing sand
control failures.
Increases production efficiency by
reducing sand control pumping
operations.
Minimizes screen plugging by
eliminating the need for premiumscreens in openhole horizontal
completions.

Effective and complete gravel

placement is critical to preventing
formation sand production and completion failure. By providing a redundant mechanism to place a gravel
pack around the screens inside the
wellbore, Alternate Path sand control
screens offer a rugged and flexible
technology for sand control treatment
design

and reservoirs.

Standard sand control screens are

the mechanical barrier in downhole
gravel-pack equipment that prevents
the gravel from entering the tubing
with the produced oil and gas. Gravelpack or STIMPAC jobs normally end
when a bridge forms in the casing or
openhole. A bridge forms where there
is a large amount of leak-off from the
wellbore either to the screen or to the
formation. Alternate Path technology
uses shunt tubes to provide alternate
slurry pathways that bypass the
bridge. As soon as the bridge forms,
the gravel-pack slurry flows through
the tubes to any void space below or
past the bridge. This allows the sand
control treatment to continue to its
normal conclusion of 100 percent perforation packing and annulus fill.
Several types of sand control
screens with Alternate Path technology are available.

AllPAC

Screens use 90L/90L Vee-Wire for both the wire wrap and support rods.
Screens use 93H/90A wires. The 93H is a house wire used for the wire wrap and the 90A is a Vee-Wire used for the support rods.

AllPAC screen

AllFRAC screen
The AllFRAC screen is used in
STIMPAC completions with Alternate
Path technology. This screen features
one or more 1.500-in. 0.750-in.
[38.1-mm 19.0-mm] shunt tubes,
attached either concentrically or
eccentrically to the screen joint, with
38-in. exit nozzles at 6-ft [2-m] of the
larger shunt tubes, this screen is ideal
for use in higher rate, STIMPAC applications. Treatment rates can be up to
8 bbl/min per shunt tube depending
on screen and blank length.

[25.4-mm 12.7-mm] shunt tubes
that are attached either concentrically

with 14-in. exit nozzles at 6-ft [2-m]

screen is normally used in gravel packs
where formation fracturing is not a
priority. Treatment rate can be up to
2 bbl/min per shunt tube depending on
the screen, the blank length and the
type of gravel pack fluid.

Horizontal AllPAC screen

The horizontal AllPAC screen features one or more 1.50-in. 0.75-in.
[38.1-mm 19.0-mm] shunt transport
tubes attached eccentrically to the
screen joint. Each transport tube,
which runs the length of the screen
and connections joint-to-joint, feeds
one or more 1.000-in. 0.500-in.
[25.4-mm 12.7-mm] docking shunt
tubes. The docking tubes have nozzles
sized at either 14 in. or 38 in. depending
on the application requirements.

66

Horizontal AllPAC screens also

include an outer shroud. The shroud
not only protects the gravel-pack
screen wire wrap and shunts during
run in, but it also centralizes the
assembly, making the use of openhole
centralizers redundant. This type
screen is normally recommended
for horizontal or highly deviated
openhole applications more than
250-ft [76-m] long.

Note: All sizes of horizontal eccentric openhole screen, use SLHT-S timed connections provided by Hunting Oilfield Services. A timed
connection allows for make up to a predetermined position, which is important for alignment of the transport tubes.
Minimum and maximum torque values as well as the maximum bend rating are based on the weight and grade of base pipe and can
be obtained from the appropriate Hunting data sheet.
