I Am Auckland Awards
St John Youth Nominees
A massive congratulations to our very own Elinor Swery, who is the acting Central District Youth
Manager and Competitions Officer and Gina Ford our Area Youth Manager for Waitemata on their
nominations for the I Am Auckland Awards.
Not only has the effort of our outstanding leaders been recognised but also St John as a Youth
Organisation has been nominated for its positive influence on the development of young people,
encouraging individuality and purposefulness.

The I Am Auckland Awards celebrate the amazing contributions young people make to their
communities across Auckland, and recognise the youth workers and organisations that support
them to be the best they can be.
Developed and delivered by young people with the support of Auckland Council, the awards
are based on the seven goals of the I Am Auckland strategic action plan, which strives to
prioritise children and young people in community and civic decision-making.
Congratulations to Elinor on being awarded the Youth Opportunities Award. We are extremely
proud of Gina and Elinors effort, and continue to be astounded by their level of care and
commitment for St John Youth.

JBs Corner
As I write this, we will have wrapped up the Penguin, Green and Blue Comp weekend. I say
weekend as I know some people have had competitions both days, and I just wanted to say a huge
thanks to the people who have given up their time to our youngest cadets this weekend, and a
special mention to our team of District Cadets of the Year who have largely run them too. Great job
guys, and a fitting way to close out your terms as DCOTY.

We've now started a new St John "Year". I'd encourage everyone to take a quick break and
consider the goals you've set yourselves this calendar year, which is now half way through. Use
this as an opportunity to look back, see what has worked well, what lessons can be learned from
the bits that haven't worked so well, and what can be done to improve and grow. This year I've
been trying to benchmark more - taking measurements of things I do, at work, at home and with my
St John team. So often we set goals for ourselves, our divisions and teams, but often they are only
a way point en route to a larger destination. Take the chance to look back and see how far you've
come from where you started and be proud of what you've acheived. 2015 has been quite a ride for
me so far, and the best bit is that its barely half over!

To everyone in the wider youth team, our NCO's, Leaders and Managers at our Divisions, the
AYMs and Portfolios Team, the DCOTY and RCOTY, our Youth Executive and especially to our
Cadets who inspire us everyday to keep doing what we do, thank you for what you've done for our
Region this last 6 months, and thanks in advance for what is yet to come. Wow, what a 6 months its
been, I can't wait to see what we can do with the next 6!

Vickis View
Its been a big month for me. I feel like Ive
been all over the place! Ive been lucky
enough to travel all around seeing divisions
and getting to meet new people. One of the
highlights for me was going to Christchurch
for the Investiture Service. I greatly enjoyed
seeing our wonderful volunteers being
recognised for their exceptional efforts. It
was a privilege for me to see Nic Telford,
JB Parker, Olivia Pritchard, Joanne
Cutforth and Sally Britnell being invested
and particularly to be a part of their special
day. Witnessing their efforts being
rewarded motivated me to try harder and to
make sure I give as much as possible 1South
to
South Hokianga Division
help our young people.
Travelling around Northland late last month, I got that same feeling. I love visiting our rural
divisions, having grown up in one down in Whangamata. Seeing all the hard work that our
wonderful leaders in Northland put in as well as all the dedicated and enthusiastic kids has left me
feeling so proud of our programme. Not without its challenges, St John Youth still continues to
provide support and development for our young people. For me, that is what its all about. Each and
every one of you is a small but vital part of what we do and I for one cannot thank you enough.

Bits and Pieces
Cadets attending Two Divisions
If there are any cadets attending more than one division a PTF needs to be sent to Head Office
from the second division enrolling them and well take care of everything from there.

Leaders attending Camps and Activities

Just a little note for Youth Leaders and Divisional Managers that you are not required to attend all
camps and courses due to having cadets from your division going. We love having you there but
we do want you to know that it is not mandatory. We hope that you will come when you can
because you can

Contingent Policy 2016 on the Hub

We have updated our Regional Contingent Policy for the National Youth Festival for 2016, called
The Road Ahead and this can be found in the Northern Region Youth section of the Hub. This was
sent to all DMs earlier this year however, if youd like a copy sent to you, please email
youth.northern@stjohn.org.nz

Divisional Mapping
A wee reminder of the Divisional Maps that show on our website, please be aware that the default
coordinates are set to South Africa, so please take a look at the attached information to this email
highlighting this problem and how to change it.

GP Changes
Just a reminder on the 1st July 2015 a change to how achieve your Grand Priors Award took
effect. The key change is that you will need to complete 100 Hours Community Service in addition
to your 12 badges (6 compulsory and 6 of your own choice). The diagram below shows the new
process.

How it works

Trophy Recall
The competitions committee is looking for any old youth trophies that have gone missing. These
include any district, regional and interprovincial trophies from gold level competitions. We would
appreciate if you could have a thorough look through your divisional cupboards, drawers and any
storage areas. Please also encourage cadets to look at home. These trophies have a lot of history
and value attached to them and we would like to present them in future competitions.
Please return any trophies found to Vicki Hawkins in the Youth Office, or get in touch with Elinor via
email elinor.swery@gmail.com

Northern Region Youth Team Email

Lately there has been some confusion over which email to use, in order to reach the youth team in
the office. If you wish to contact the youth team, can you please send your emails to the
youth.northern@stjohn.org.nz You should then receive an automatic reply confirming that your
email was successfully recieved.

Youth Leaders & Officers Essentials Training Courses

25-27 August Northland (exact venue to be confirmed)
We have two Youth Leaders and Officers Essential Training Courses coming up this year. This
course is set up to train our volunteers to be the best youth leaders possible! People have been
asking for good youth leader and officer training to be provided for some time and this is part of our
wider strategy to give leaders the tools to do their roles well!
Both courses starts Friday evening, and concludes Sunday afternoon. There is a lot of content to
cover, but the key focus is on networking and giving leaders the opportunity to learn from each
other. It is run in a safe and fun environment giving our Youth Leaders and Officers the opportunity
to ask questions and together come up with the best ways of dealing with situations that come our
way.
The courses will provide you with a toolbox of skills that will help you complete your divisional tasks.
Whether youre a brand new leader, or someone who has been around for a long time, these
courses will be beneficial for all. There is no cost to attend this course as we believe leader training
is crucial in achieving our goal of running awesome youth divisions.

First Responders Day 1 and 2 Courses

26-27 September Lady Blundell Centre, 10 Harrison Road, Mt Wellington
The Youth Advanced First Aid course is a 2 day course, based on Clinical Developments First
Responder training. On successful completion of day 1 and 2, cadets
will gain the Gold First Aid badge. This is now the only pathway for
cadets to gain their gold badge.
The skills learnt on this course require on-going practice and using
these skills on operational events can be extremely useful. The content
is intensive and it would be beneficial if you had your Blue First Aid
before attempting the AFA course. The course involves both student
participation and book work. Students are also required to role play in
the patient simulation sections.
At the end of the course cadets will be familiar with an Ambulance and its layout which will benefit
you if you are looking at moving into an operational role.

Cadets attending this course will need to ensure they have completed the precourse workbook
available from the Youth Office.
This is a compulsory badge for your Grand Priors Award.
Course cost: $50 for cadets and leaders

LDT & NCO Extension Courses

11-13 September TBC
The Leadership Development Training (LDT) course is for
all levels of cadet leadership - Corporals, Sergeants and
Cadet Leaders. Cadets from any district are able to attend
this course. Any youth member wishing to be promoted to
a youth rank or obtain their Gold Leadership badge must
attend an LDT course.
When registering cadets for the course, please state on the
course application form which course level they are to
attend - Divisional Managers you would make this decision
based on the age, maturity level and leadership ability of
the cadet. See your LDT DM Guide for more info.
The NCO extension course is a one off trial course for current NCOs to come along for some extra
training to help refine their leadership skill and give them even more training to take back to their
division. Cadets are required to hold one of the cadet ranks to attend the extension course. The
cost for this will be the same as attending the LDT course which is $60.

Regional Blue and Gold Competitions

19-20 September Camp Morley, Clarks Beach Road, Clarks Beach
This year we are combining Blue and Gold Competitions, to be run at a camp. Blue Competitions
will be held on Saturday 19 September, and Gold Competitions on Sunday 20 September. Gold
cadets that are competing on the Sunday, are more than welcome to judge/patient for Blue
competitions and then stay the night on Saturday.
To gain entry for competing at Regionals your competitions team must have either come first and
second aggregate team and individual, from each district, will qualify for regionals.
It will be up to each division to ensure they have enough leaders attend with their divisional teams to
meet CYPP ratios. Dinner will be served on Saturday night, and potentially a movie shown. Other
than that, it will be over to the divisions to entertain themselves. There will be a small cost of $20
per person to stay overnight to help us recover costs for the use of the camp, dinner, and breakfast.
We will also be looking for judges, patients and marshals for the day. Any such travellers are
welcome to stay overnight on Saturday as well, as long as their police check and CYPP training is
up to date.
Information to register for the overnight aspect of Regional Competitions will be sent to divisions
that have qualified for Regionals.

Regional Gold Tented Camp

25-27 September - Huia Barn Paddock
This camp is open to gold level members aged 13-17 years old who would like to work on their Gold
Camping badge. Successful applicants will be contacted via email with gear requirements etc. We
also would love to hear from leaders who are keen to help, and are the type to get right into all the
camp activities.
Cost: $50
