What is base isolation ?

# Base isolation, also known as seismic
isolation system, is a collection of
structural
elements
which
should
substantially decouple a superstructure
from its substructure resting on a shaking
ground thus protecting the buildings
structural integrity.
# It is the most powerful tool of the
earthquake engineering pertaining to the
passive
structural
vibration
control
technologies.

advantages of base Isolation

# Base Isolation is meant to enable a building
or non-building structure to survive a
potentially devastating seismic impact
through a proper initial design or subsequent
modifications(retrofit).
# The application of this technique can raise a
structure's seismic performance and its
seismic sustainability considerably.
# It provides the design profession the ability to
design a building that is operational after a
major earthquake.

In nepal

Can be easily applied in increasing

skyscrapers with a little development
in technical skills.

Economically feasible if the cost after

earthquake is accounted.

Nepal, being in highly earthquake

susceptible region, may serve a
good option.

Limitations
Costly, at the initial phase of
construction.
New in terms of use, thus facing
the resistance to change.
Requires higher technology and
design.

Conclusions
Base isolation provides the highest
level of protection operational after a major earthquake.
Base isolation has significant
benefits for the earthquake
protection of historic structures.
