set up, and handling of a typically configured CimCore
Infinite series system, insuring that you will get the best
performance possible.

Conventions Used in this Guide

This manual uses the following conventions to alert you to
information that varies from optional to critical in nature.
These guidelines are used to distinguish the difference
between these passages:
NOTE: A Note is used to indicate useful, but not critical
information about the operation of your CimCore Infinite
system or its sub-parts. Information contained in a Note is
not safety related. Advice therein is optional.
CAUTION: A Caution highlights information that is
critical to the vitality and correct operation of your
CimCore Infinite system or its sub-parts. Failing to heed
this advice will potentially result in damage to your
CimCore Infinite system. It is important to read the
Cautions and comply with the advice.
WARNING: A Warning alerts you to information that is
critical to human safety. Failure to comply with a Warning
potentially imperils the safety of the CimCore Infinite

Functional Overview
The CimCore Infinite series portable articulating arm
coordinate measurement system is a powerful tool for 3dimensional digitizing, inspection, and reverse engineering.
Its lightweight design and portability allow for easy
inspection at multiple work sites, as well as quick mounting
in any orientation for easy measurement in tight or
confined spaces. The CimCore Infinite series offers
reliable, high accuracy data for use with a wide variety of
software packages, and exporting to most popular computer
assisted drafting (CAD) programs.
The CimCore Infinite system consists of the CimCore Arm,
a computer, and power supply. The entire system can be set
up in minutes and requires only a single operator. A
remote-control mouse located on the wrist of the measuring
arm can perform all software functions. Audio feedback
helps to guide the operator through inspection routines.

Technical Overview
The CimCore Infinite series portable articulating arm is
constructed from high-grade carbon fiber, which is
inherently temperature stable. The construction duplicates
and enhances the movement and reach of the human arm
(shoulder, elbow, and wrist), plus infinite rotation of
principal axes. Each element offers two degrees of
freedom. The Arm is available in a variety of lengths and
there are extended measurement options available to permit
accurate inspection of parts and assemblies larger than the
Arms measuring envelope. Data collection is obtained
through various contact, non-contact, laser, and speciality
probes. The Arm also has a built camera for documenting
parts and performing transprojections.
The CimCore Infinite series system works in tandem with a
variety of software packages that are accessed via the
proprietary Arm Utilities software drivers provided with
the system.

Chapter Three
Installing Software and
Wi-Fi Setup
This section describes the procedure to install the software
and the set-up of Wi-Fi communications.

Installing Software
CAUTION: Make sure Arm is NOT attached to power
source and the Camera Dongle is removed from back of
Arm Base.
NOTES: WinRDS 4.0s installer does not bring up the
LoadArmData application as in the past. WinRDS itself
handles loading Armspecs and language selection. Also
The installer installs the USB drivers for the Sony Camera
that is integrated in the Infinite Arm.
1. Install software CD in drive.
2. Run the Win RDS 4.0 installer. NOTE: If necessary
uninstall a previous version and return to this step.
3. Install USB connector to computer. DO NOT
INSTALL CAMERA DONGLE AT THIS POINT.
4. Now connect the Arm to AC power and turn power
switch to ON position. Wait for Windows to find the
USB device and bring up its USB Device Wizard.
Follow the steps of the wizard until it is complete.
(NOTE: You may not see this wizard if you are
running Windows 2000 or if a CimCore USB arm was
previously installed.
5. Attach the Camera Dongle to the Arm Base. Wait for
Windows to bring up the USB Device Wizard and
proceed as in Step 3. There are two devices to install;
the camera and a microphone. As above, you may not
see any Wizard activity if the camera was previously
installed or you are running Windows 2000.
Release 02/18/05

Page 15

6. Run Arm Utilities. NOTE: It is not mandatory to run

Arm Utilities at this point. It is WinRDS itself that will
perform the necessary set-up the first time it is called
after an installation. However, it is good practice to run
Arm Utilities immediately following the arm
installation in order to do a basic checkout before
invoking a third party application. If ArmSpecs data
already exists in the installation location, the Arm specs
are discovered and used. If no Armspecs are found and
the Arm dos not have Armspec loaded in its memory,
two dialog boxes will appear asking for the location of
the Armspecs. Locate the Armspecs and load as
directed.

Changing Armspecs Manually

Locate the Configuration screen and select the Armspecs
tab, Figure 3-1.

Figure 3-1. Armspec Tab

Click Change Armspecs and follow directions on the
screen. When complete click OK and restart the Arm run
with the new Armspecs. NOTE: The Arm mustr be in the
disconnected in order to change Armspecs.

Changing Language
Locate the Configuration screen and select the General tab,
Figure 3-2.

Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 16

Figure 3-2. General Tab

In the Language dropdown list select from the languages
available. When done, press OK. All WinRDS text strings
will be switched immediately (select Special Functions to
see this). However, the main screen of Arm Utilities will
not reflect the new language until you exit and restart.

Changing Arm Types

WinRDS will automatically select the right arm type of arm
based on information stored in the Armspecs file. However
there are a couple of exceptions to this rule.
If you load Armspecs for a 2000, serial arm, WinRDS will
give you an error message, Figure 3-3.

Figure 3-3 .Error Message

Run the switcher.exe file located in the extras folder to
switch to 2000 arm. If necessary you may run it again to
switch back to 3000/Stinger/Infinite, Figure 3-4.

Setup of Wi-Fi Wireless

Communications (Optional)
Preamble
There are two parts to the WiFi setup. Part 1 is getting the
PC to talk to the arm. Part 2 is getting the Software
(WinRDS) to talk to the arm.
TIP: While trouble shooting Part 1, be advised that our
software (WinRDS, PI, etc.) is completely out of the
picture. In fact you need not install any of our software to
accomplish Part 1.

Part 1
Step A. Finding the arm in the WiFi network list
The wireless capable PC requires a way to view the
available WiFi networks. You may be using the standard
Windows code, or the WiFi vendor may provide a custom
utility. Either way there will be a dialog box in which you
can see all the wifi networks in your area.
Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 18

There are two kinds of WiFi networks; 1. Infrastructure(or

Access Point), and 2. Ad-hoc(or Peer-to-Peer). Most office
networks are type 1 (as are McDonalds and Starbucks),
while the Infinite is type 2. Being Type 2 means that any
WiFi PC can connect to the arm without there being a Host
(WiFi router) in the vicinity. Ad-Hoc is often used at
meetings where several PCs can connect together to share
information, without the need of a Host.
TIP: If you cannot see any networks check if there is a
Vendor supplied utility program. Sometimes this vendor
program will disable the Windows built-in method.
TIP: If you see some networks but not the arm, check if AdHoc filtering is on. Usually there is an advanced setting
which switches between view all networks, view
Infrastructure only, and view Ad-Hoc only. For our
purposes we must be able to view Ad-Hoc.
If you can see the arms SSID in the list of available
networks go to Step B. If not review the TIPS above and call
Techsupport if the condition continues.

Step B. Connecting the PC to the Arm

The specific sequence of events to connect to a wireless
network will depend on the WiFi software in use. Below

Step C. Set the PC Wireless IP Address

The WiFi chip used in the Infinite has a built in Operating
System. It supports Web Browsing and Ping. The Web
Browser allows configuration of the chip, while the Ping
function makes it possible for the PC to test the connection
easily. The key point at this stage is to establish compatible
IP addresses for the PC and the arm.
TIP: The arm is set at the factory with an IP address of
192.168.0.3. In order for the PC to talk to the arm, the PCs
wireless IP address must be 192.168.0.X, where X is any
value except from 1 to 254 but NOT 3.

Go to the Properties Page for the Wireless card. Select

TCP/IP settings

Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 22

Change to Use the following IP address (ie. a static IP address). Enter

192.168.0.X where X is 1 to 254, but not 3. Hit the Tab key to fill in
the Subnet mask (as shown above). Hit OK to return to the previous
screen. Hit OK again to exit the Properties dialog.
With the PC wireless network IP address set you can now go to Step D.

Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 23

Step D. Checking Communications between the

PC and the arm
You may skip Step D and go directly to Part 2. Return here
if you find a problem in Part 2.
Select the Run item from the Start menu and type cmd
and hit Enter. This will bring up a DOS box. Type: ping
192.168.0.3 and hit Enter. If you see something similar
to the screen below the PC and arm are talking OK.

TIP: If you get a response Host unreachable, it means

that you have not set your PCs wireless adaptor IP address
correctly. Specifically it means that the first three numbers
are not 192.168.0. Use the ipconfig command to get more
information

TIP: If you get a response Request timed out, it may

mean that there is a conflict of IP addresses. This can occur
if the PC has an Ethernet connection, which is using the
same IP address range (Ie. 192.168.0). Many simple routers
use this scheme. Use the ipconfig command to check.

TIP: If you get a response Request timed out, and you

have verified that there is no IP address conflict present,
wait and try again. Sometimes it takes the arm several
minutes after establishing the link to the PC before it will
Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 24

respond to a ping. If this problem persists, it suggests that

the arms Wi-Fi configuration is incorrect.

TIP: To check on the IP addresses in use, try the ipconfig

command. It will dump out all network information for
Ethernet as well as wireless connections.

This shows that the PC wireless IP address is correct and

the wired LANs address will not conflict with our wireless
connection

This computer has a wired LAN, which is using the same

IP address range as the arm. You will not be able to use the
WiFi unless this situation is altered.

If the ping command is successful, the PC and arm are

communicating. You can now proceed to Part 2.
Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 25

Part 2
Step A. Selecting WiFi in WinRDS
WinRDS controls the communication port selection for all
Applications. Normally one runs Arm Utilities to choose
between COM1 COM8, USB or WiFi. This choice is
remembered and becomes the default selection.
Unfortunately some third party Applications want to make
the selection themselves. If said Application doesnt have a
WiFi option, it may be impossible to use WiFi with that
Application. The solution is for the Vendor of that software
to update their code to allow WiFi selection. Note that
some Applications always use the default port selection,
and allow you to get to the CONFIG panel while running
the Application itself.

WiFi is not selected.

Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 26

When WiFi is selected, The Arm IP address field is

enabled. This should only be changed if you have
reconfigured the WiFi chip on the arm. If you do change it,
the new value will be remembered.
The SSID is the name of the arm as seen in the wireless
network list back in Part 1. If you want to rename the arm,
type a name in the box and hit Set. If the rename is
successful, the arm will start broadcasting with the new
name. This means that you will have to go back to Part 1
and select the new name from the list of available wireless
networks.
TIP: When switching to WiFi, it is a good idea to Get
the SSID. If this is successful you can be sure of everything
working OK.
The Channel is the portion of the spectrum being used for
communications. If you want to try a different channel,
type in a number from 1 to 14 and hit Set. If the channel
is changed the PC will automatically switch to it without
operator intervention.

Release 02/18/05

Infinite Series Setup Guide

Page 27

TIP: If your WiFi performance seems sluggish, it is

probably due to heavy traffic in your area. Try switching to
another channel.

Confirming
Communications
This section describes the procedure for confirming that all
of the components of your CimCore Infinite system are
talking to one another. This is vital to system operation.
For testing communication in WinRDS, follow the steps in
this section.

Arm Utilities Confirming

Communications
Be sure that the WinRDS software key (optional) is
properly placed on the printer parallel port.
1. After checking the outlet (if required), check to see that
all connections have been made.
2. If computer is not on, turn it on. Turn power on to the
Arm. The power switch is located on the back panel
(ON/OFF). The Arm power switch will illuminate

Correctly Handling Your CimCore

Infinite Arm
Although the CimCore Infinite Arm is built with very
durable and strong components, caution must be exercised
in the handling, movement, and operating of the system.
Since the CimCore Infinite Arm is an inspection machine,
these procedures must be followed to insure success in all
your applications of the system.
?? When positioning the CimCore Infinite Arm, lift only
by the handle in back of arm. See Figure 4-1 for
reference.
?? If the Arm is moved, make certain that the magnets are
locked in place before reinstalling the Arm or it could
fall from the base.

Figure 4-1. Arm Correct Handling

?? When moving the Arm, use the transportation handle
locking mechanism in back of arm.
?? Use the transportation case(s) provided upon shipment
by CimCore, Inc. when moving the system from one
station to another.
?? Remove the probes from the Arm prior to packing
and/or transporting the Arm.

Release 02/18/05

Page 37

?? Verify that the transportation case is closed and latched

snugly before moving.
?? The CimCore Infinite Arm can be held in either a righthanded or left-handed position. When taking
measurements do not exert excess pressure on the
probe. Excess pressure may cause deflection on the
probe or part and thus produce inaccurate data.
?? Always support the elbow as illustrated (see Figure 4-1
above) when measuring. Avoid wrapping your arm
around the elbow.

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi
If the Arm is not communicating, it is possible that the IP
address is incorrect. To correct this problem, do the
flowing:
1. Using the Ping command do the following: Select the
Run item from the Start menu and enter CMD. This
will bring up a DOS box. Enter: ping 192.168.0.3 and
hit enter. If you see something similar to the screen
below, Figure 5-1, the PC and arm are talking OK.

Figure 5-1. Example Screen

If you get a response Host unreachable, it means that you
have not set your PCs wireless adaptor IP address
correctly. See Initial Setup.
If you get a response Request timed out, it means that the
arm is not responding. Sometimes it takes the arm several
minutes after establishing the link to the PC before it will
respond to a ping. If this problem persists, it suggests that
the arms Wi-Fi configuration is incorrect. This may or
may not be fixable in the field. Contact

Determining If a Power Conditioner

is Required
This is a brief explanation of when a power conditioner
should be used with the CimCore Infinite series systems.

When a Power Conditioner is Always

Required
A power conditioner is always required when the CimCore
Infinite series system is used on a power circuit shared with
heavy equipment, such as brakes, mills, large air
conditioners, and especially arc welders. These machines
generate excessive amounts of conducted noise that may
interfere with system operations.

When a Power Conditioner May be

Required
A power conditioner may be required when there is heavy
machinery connected to a circuit that runs near the circuit
that the CimCore Infinite series system is using. Noisy
circuits can generate radiated noise of a clean circuit
nearby. This situation is hard to predict without knowing
how the facility is wired.

When a Power Conditioner May Not be

Required
A power conditioner may not be required (but is still
recommended) if the power circuit is known to be separate
from any heavy machinery, large air conditioners, etc.
