the Western Ghats and ways to provide adequate livelihood security to the local residents.
Environment and forest ministers of which 6 states were invited for this meeting, which are being
affected by this demarcation? Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu
Explanation: The main focus of this meeting, presided over by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javdekar, was to
discuss measures to conserve the biodiversity of the Western Ghats region, while providing adequate opportunities for
livelihood security of the local people in the broad paradigm of ecologically sensitive area. Union Environment Ministry
had published a draft notification last year for declaring an ecologically sensitive area in the Western Ghats in these 6
states. The identified ecologically sensitive area represents a continuous band of natural vegetation, extending over a
horizontal distance of about 1,500 km along the west coast of the country. Western Ghats is regarded as a global
biodiversity hotspot harbouring many endemic species of flowering plants, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and
invertebrates. It supports population of about 50 million people.

3) UNESCO granted world heritage site status to Japans 23 Meiji period (1868-1912)
industrial sites that contributed to its transformation from feudalism into a successful
modern economy. But South Korea has opposed this UNESCO announcement. Why? Korea
opposes Japan as it had forced thousands of Korean labourers to work in these sites before
and during the Second World War
Explanation: The industrial sites associated with Japans Meiji period are considered as enduring heritage by Japan as they
contributed immensely in transforming Japan from feudalism into a successful modern economy. But these sites are
considered controversial by Korea because of the use of an estimated 60,000 Korean labourers by Japanese authorities
forced to work at seven of the sites during Japans 1910-1945 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula. Most forced
labourers have died, but some survivors are still seeking compensation from Japan through the courts. After UNESCOs
announcement and Korean protests over the announcement, Japan agreed to acknowledge that some of these Meiji sites
used Korean forced labourers after Korea mounted pressure on it.
