JacquelineRenaRaypaidafelon$10,000tokillhersoninlawbecauseshebelievedhewasabusing
herdaughterandmightonedaykillher,PierceCountyprosecutorssay.
The49yearoldKeyPeninsulawomanandherallegedaccomplice,LuisBreaBarker,pleadednotguilty
Mondaytotwocountsoffirstdegreemurder.Barker,37,alsopleadednotguiltytofirstdegree
unlawfulpossessionofafirearm.
AlthoughthereisonlyonevictimLeonDwayneBauchmanJr.,33,ofPuyallupRayandBarkerface
twocountsofmurderforallegedlykillingBauchmanintentionallyandaspartofakidnappingscheme,
deputyprosecutorPhilSorensonsaid.
Theycanbeconvictedonbothcountsbutsentencedonlyforone.
AcouplewalkingtheirdogfoundBauchman'sbodyJuly12inthe14900blockof82ndAvenue
Northwest,lessthanamilefromhisinlaws'house.Hisankles,wristsandeyeswerecoveredwithduct
tape,andhehadbeenfatallyshot.
Ray'sdaughtertoldinvestigatorssheandBauchmanhadbeenestrangedsincelateMaywhenhe
fracturedhereyesocketandshegotanocontactorderagainsthim.Shehadbeenworkingontheir
relationshipandallowinghimtostayattheirPuyalluphomeperiodically.
Themorningbeforehisbodywasfound,Bauchman'swifesaid,theyargued,soshepackedabagand
spentthenightatamotelwithherthreechildren.WhenshereturnedhomeJuly12,shetriedtocall
Bauchmanbutcouldn'tfindhim.
DetectivestheninterviewedoneofBauchman'sfriends,whosaidBauchmancalledhimthenightofJuly
11andwasupsetbecausehecouldn'tfindhiswife.BauchmantoldhisfriendthatRayhadsaidhiswife
wasatherhomeandaskedhimtocomeover.

Bauchmanbelievedhismotherinlawwassettinghimuptobearrested,sohestayedonthephonewith
hisfriendduringthedrivetoRay'shouseandpromisedtocallwhenheleft.Henevercalled.
HisSUVlaterwasfoundatanapartmentcomplexwherehesometimesstayedwithhisgrandmother.
Accordingtochargingpapers:
Raytoldinvestigatorsshespokewithhersoninlawonthephonethatnight,buthenevercameover.
Shesaidshewassupposedtojoinherhusbandonacampingtripthatdaybutwasdelayedbecauseshe
helpedherdaughterfindamotel.
Aweeklater,whiledetectiveswereservingasearchwarrantatherhome,Raydeniedpullingthetrigger
and"indicatedthatdetectiveshadnoideahowcrazyBauchmanwas."ShesaidBauchmanhadbecome
increasinglyviolentandshefearedhewouldkillherdaughter.
RayeventuallyadmittedtopayingBarker$10,000tokillhersoninlaw,accordingtoprosecutors.They
providedthisaccountoftheslaying:
OnJuly11,RayluredBauchmantoherhomeandcalledBarker,whoarrivedwithanunknownman,a
handgunandducttape.WhenBauchmanknockedonthedoor,themenambushedhimwhileRaywent
outside.Sherecalledhearingyelling,Bauchmanbeggingandasinglegunshot.
RaygaveBarkeratarptocleanupthebloodaspotofwhichwasfoundonthediningroomcarpetand
thekeystoherminivansotheycouldmoveBauchman'sbody.Shethenwashedhersoninlaw'sblood
offthefrontwalkway,burnedbloodypapertowelsandtookBauchman'svehicletohisgrandmother's
home.
OnAug.7,RayworeawireandrecordedBarkertalkingabouttheslaying.HewasarrestedFridayand
hasrefusedtospeakwithinvestigators.
