Devon quarterly earnings exceed $3 million
Devon Energy has reported net earnings
of $314 million for the quarter ended June
30. Last year at this time, the company re-
ported net earnings of $1.3 billion.
Production of oil, natural gas and natural
gas liquids increased 12 percent to a record
65.4 million oil-equivalent barrels in the
second quarter. Lower prices for all three
products led to the decrease in quarterly
net earnings.
For the first half of the year, Devon re-

Smith traded in a 2005 LaCrosse,
which was the debut model for the
Buick that replaced the Century and
Regal. She had purchased it at Wood’s
used-car lot a couple of years ago.
In recognition of its red jewel tint-
coat color, she has nicknamed her new
LaCrosse CXL “Ruby.” (Her car’s inte-
rior is in cocoa leather).
“I had seen the new LaCrosse in sev-
eral magazines, and it looked like such
a pretty car,” said the administrative
assistant for a financial planning firm.
“I figured I would get another gold or
silver car, but while I was driving the
50 miles to Decatur, I decided what I
really wanted was a pretty red.
“They were willing to move two or
three other vehicles to get it off the
showroom floor so I could drive it,”
Smith said. “This car is so luxurious.
The steering is like butter, and the
turning radius is like no other car I’ve
ever driven.”
Her LaCrosse is equipped with a
255-horsepower direct-overhead cam
V6 and an electronically controlled six-
speed automatic transmission.
Smith said her family has bought
four vehicles from the 30-year-old, lo-
cally-owned dealership known for its
massive light-duty truck and SUV in-
ventory.

his 2006 Yukon from Wood on the same
day their daughter, Elizabeth, bought

I will be turning 65 in a few months and applying for
Medicare and have been told I need to consider purchasing
a supplemental policy to help pay for the things Medicare
doesn’t cover. What can you tell me about this and where can

If you’re nearing 65, and plan to choose traditional Medi-
care Part A and B as your primary source of health cover-
age, a supplemental policy (also known as Medigap insur-
ance) is definitely something you need to consider. Medigap
insurance helps pay for things that traditional Medicare
doesn’t cover like deductibles, co-payments and other ser-
vices. Here’s what you should know:
ABCs of Medigap
Medigap policies, which are sold by private health in-
surers, come in 12 standardized benefit packages, labeled
“A” through “L.” The coverage and price generally increase
as you move through the alphabet from the basic Plan A
through the more comprehensive Plan J. Plans K and L
are high-deductible policies that carry lower premiums but
higher out-of-pocket costs. The most popular choice is Plan
F, which strikes a good balance between costs (averaging
around $160 per month) and coverage. (Note: If you live in
Massachusetts, Minnesota or Wisconsin you have a differ-
ent set of Medigap plans.)
How to choose
To choose a policy, consider your health status and family
medical history. The differences among plans can be small
and rather confusing, so you’ll need to do some homework to

“Most injuries to pocket
pets involve bite wounds or
trauma from dogs and cats, or
traumatic injuries from own-
ers who drop their pets,” said
Rettenmund, “so it is impor-
tant to keep any pocket pets
away from dogs, cats, ferrets,
and snakes in the household.”
Pocket pets are very fragile
creatures and require proper
handling techniques. For ex-
ample, they should always
be held over soft surfaces to
prevent injury from a poten-
tial fall. Pocket pets require

The Texas Parks and Wild-
life Department issues 2.1
million hunting and fishing
licenses annually through
the agency’s 28 field offices,
more than 65 state parks
and at more than 1,500 re-
tailers across Texas.
Licenses may also be pur-
chased online through the
TPWD Web site or by phone
at (800-895-4248). Call cen-
ter hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday. The
online transaction system is
available 24/7. A $5 conve-
nience fee will be charged
for online and phone orders.
A license confirmation
number is issued at the
time of purchase for online
and phone orders, and the
physical license is mailed
separately.
Confirmation numbers
will verify that a license has
been purchased, which is
sufficient for dove hunting,
but will not allow hunters
to take fish or wildlife that
requires a tag.
In addition to a hunting li-
cense, all wing shooters will
need to purchase a game
bird stamp. To hunt doves
or teal in September, a Mi-
gratory Game Bird Stamp
($7) is required. Duck hunt-
ers also need to purchase
a Federal Duck Stamp and

other state stamp endorse-
ments are included with a
lifetime license.
New this year, purchase
of the Federal Duck Stamp
will cost $15 to $17 depend-
ing on where you buy. If pur-
chased through the TPWD
license system, there is a
$2 administrative fee. Your
license will indicate Fed-
eral Duck Stamp purchase,
and the physical stamp will
be mailed. There are other
options for purchasing the
stamp, either at some major
post offices or online.
“Remember, it’s your re-
sponsibility to make sure
you are properly licensed, so
be sure to check your license
before you leave the sales
counter,” said Tom New-
ton with TPWD’s license
program. “We do get a fair
number of requests for re-
issuance of licenses because
the hunter forgot to get HIP-
certified.”
There are other mandatory
endorsements to consider at
the time of purchase, too. An
Upland Game Bird Stamp
($7) is required to hunt all
non-migratory game birds,
including turkey, quail,
pheasant, chachalaca and
lesser prairie chicken.
