He was predeceased by his

Dwane Long; two sisters, Sarah
Alice “Cookie” Long and
Cheryl Lynn Long.
He is survived by his wife,
Arlene Greer of Hornell; his
mother, Sarah Greer Long of
Tennessee; two daughters,
Ruth Johnson (Jerry) Seawright
of Rochester, Clara Green of
Rochester; one son, McKinley
(Naomi) Branch of Endwell;

1967. Walt briefly worked for
the former Acme Markets, and
in 1967 was hired by the NYS-
DOT, holding many jobs and
retiring as supervisor of
Regional Materials Engineer in
2002, and from 2003-2008
was an adjunct professor at
Alfred State College. Walt was
a member of the North Hornell
Fire Department from 1963-
1995, holding many offices

Students in the Hornell City School District’s SHADOW program keep busy with
a variety of after-school activities designed to teach them citizenship and
environmental awareness skills. The program kicked off this fall for students in
grades 7-9 and was expanded in January to serve students in grades 4-6 at the
Intermediate School.

SHADOW (Students of Hornell Actively Discovering Our World) is funded

through a 21st Century Community Learning Center Federal Grant.

So far this year, students: Bell ringers: SHADOW students rang bells for the
Salvation Army’s Red Kettle drive during the holidays.
Grades 7-9
• Celebrated Red Ribbon week by combining their efforts with the Mentoring
Group and planting red tulip bulbs all around the school.
• Created more than 50 placemats for Billy Schu’s Restaurant annual Thanksgiving
dinner. The event is open to anyone who has no other place to celebrate the
holiday.
• Baked and packaged breads and muffins for the homebound in the Hornell area,
and donated them to the Red Cross to distribute during the holidays.
• Rang bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive.
• Took a field trip to Corning Community College to take in a show at the
Planetarium, then went to the Civic Center for ice skating.
• Began a fitness and personal well-being segment that included instruction on
proper use of the school’s fitness center and on the importance of staying fit for
life.
• Celebrated National GIS day by studying geo caching and participating in a Cooking: SHADOW participants baked and packaged breads and
scavenger hunt using high-tech GIS machines.

for it to survive in. Habitats were created out of recycled products such as cereal
boxes, paper towel rolls and milk cartons.
• Made birdhouses and birdfeeders to take to their homes.
• Created bird feeders and placed them around the schoolyard.
• Learned about healthy eating habits through cooking lessons twice a week.
• Learned about and built bat, owl, wood duck and blue birdhouses that will be
placed at Shawmut Park during the next few weeks.
• Created Valentines for Veterans for the Bath VA. Group 3: SHADOW participants at Hornell High School.
