ethical foundation based on the World Health Organizations research on sexuality.

Mandate, Recognition and Accreditation

a) Sexuality Education is a Basic Human Right
b) The World Health Organization resolutions regarding Education and Treatment in Human Sexuality: the Training of Health
Professionals (Geneva from 6 to 12 February 1974)
Human sexuality should be encouraged to develop as an autonomous discipline. Country and regional resource centers
should be established to provide consultation and assistance in programs of training, production of educational materials,
research, and therapy related to sexuality.
This document paved the way for improved training of health professionals to provide the necessary sexual education,
counseling and therapy. It also served as a stimulus for the development of the field of sexology and sexual resources centers
throughout the world.
c) In order to extend and enhance previous efforts, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health
Organization (PAHO), in collaboration with the World Association for Sexology (WAS), meet in Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala,
on May 19 to 22, 2000 and published a document in 2001 regarding sexology:
It is evident that the future of sexology will involve many new and diverse disciplines collaborating at different levels and serving
different functions in addressing Sexual Health needs. As an interdisciplinary science, sexology is uniquely placed to bring together
the knowledge and expertise of specialists, the diverse agendas of various advocacy groups, the health concerns of communities,
and the methodologies and interests of diverse disciplines. For this reason, it is critical that sexology is promoted as a
discipline/profession. It is not sufficient for specialists from other disciplines to apply their fields of expertise to the study of Sexual
Health. We also need trained Sexual Health specialists who focus exclusively on Sexual Health concerns to address the diverse and
specific concerns raised by sex and sexuality.
More specifically, there is a need to:
Establish training standards for sexual educators, sexuality specialists
Promote sexology as a discipline/profession
Advocate to governments for sexuality training programs for professionals. P 287
There continues to be a shortage of health professionals who have human sexuality as their focus of training. Professionals of
related disciplines (psychology, psychiatry, gynecology, urology) have developed a specialized field of work in problems related to
human sexuality but an integrated approach in their work is difficult to find because their point of views are usually biased by
their original training. P 297
d) Specific countries all over the world support our programs and academics all over the world recognize and appreciate
the Academy for Sexology but we are not formally accredited with any specific countrys department of education. This is
the prerogative of each individual country.

e) A unit of Sexology SA was registered as a South African Company Academy for Sexology (Pty) Ltd in 2008 and applied
for accreditation with the Department of Higher Education in South Africa in 2009. This application was delayed since 2011
due to negativity towards sexology in South Africa, but the application gained new momentum and it should be approved
hopefully before 2016.
The CSHP (Council of Sexual Health Professions previously Sexology SAs Council for Sexual Health Practitioners)
accredited the Academy for Sexology in South Africa since 2003.
f) Each country has its own accreditation policies but no bona fide scientific studies in sexology can be ignored due to
i) Basic human rights to education
ii) the WHO Mandate
iii) RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) in OECD and other countries such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, the
Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
South Africa has a well-developed RPL Policy within the context of the NQF Act (Act 67 of 2008).
(Also see Prof Lemmers Abstract in SAQAs publication on RPL)
iv) World Wide International Peer Recognition
v) SAIHS (South Asia Institute Human Sexuality)
vi) The urgent need for properly trained sexual health professionals
All our degree certificates are formally issued by the Academy for Sexology as an International Higher Education Institution

A SHORT OVERVIEW ON THE HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY FOR SEXOLOGY

2003 The founding of the Sexology SA and the Academy for Sexology by Dr Johann Lemmer in 2003 is a direct outcome of
the World Health Organizations resolutions on sexuality in 1974 and 2000 as well as the encouragements of Prof Milton
Diamond and Prof Erwin Haeberle. Prof Dr Milton Diamond, professor of Anatomy & reproductive biology at the University
of Hawaii and former president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS) encouraged Dr Lemmer: With your
training you seem to be in the ideal position to be able to turn minds and increase understanding regarding sexuality
education. You have a strong background position from which to publicly press your ideas. You have both religious,
academic and clinical experiences to bring to bear.
2005 The former late president of the World Association for Sexology, Marc Ganem, described the book Introduction to
Sexology by Dr Johann Lemmer as - Very impressive! Marc Ganem also invited Dr Johann Lemmer to address the World
Association of Sexuality (WAS) congresses in Montreal and in Sydney but due to a lack of funding that was not possible at
that stage.
The Department of Higher Education in Canada took initiative in corresponding with the Academy for Sexology in order to
subsidize Canadian students who enroll with The Academy for Sexology in SA.

Lemmers abstract in the Journal of Sexual Medicine at the 20th World Congress of Sexual Health Glasgow UK Jun 2011

13

Another abstract of Lemmer on RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) was published by SAQA (2011) in their publication on RPL.

Lemmer was recently (2010), rightly or wrongly, compared with Sigmund Freud in a scientific journal, Communicatio.
The sites/citing of female sexuality: An Irigarayan reading of Sex positive
Author: Rory du Plessis
Abstract
The article aims to examine the ways in which sexological discourse represents
gendered hegemonic modes of sexuality... Lemmer's descriptions thereof reveal the
manifestation of patriarchal and phallocentric ideologies. This is not an idiosyncrasy
peculiar to Lemmer alone, but relates to the phallocentric model of sexuality which is
apparent in much of sexology - from its historical founders to its contemporary
theorists. As such, the article also traces how Sigmund Freud's theories are evident in
the writings of Lemmer. This marked presence is interrogated through an Irigarayan
analysis: in doing so, Lemmer's account of female sexuality continues Freud's
articulation thereof
Lemmer; Luce Irigaray; sexology; Sigmund Freud
Communicatio, Volume 36, Issue 3 November 2010 , pages 309 - 326
Communicatio South African Journal for Communication Theory and Research

Lemmer's reaction:
1) I sincerely appreciate the fact that the author opened the debate and I respect him for that.
2) It seems that a lack of information about me and a lack of in-depth studies of my work is the primary cause of 'male fide' perceptions
about me by jealous colleagues in South Africa.
3) It is true that Sigmund Freud (among many others) partially influenced me and I regard this as a compliment.
4) I categorically and strongly deny the statement that I define women like Freud in terms of a unitary male model.
5) It is a pity that my scientific publications were all ignored in this article in favor of a popular pre-scientific publication which was in any
case completely misinterpreted. To label me as an Irigarayanis because of a single misunderstood parody is ridiculous.
6) In my book Identity and Sexual Identity, 2005 (available in 280 countries) I described the complexity of male and female sexuality and
most definitely not in terms of a unitary male model.
7) To label me as a phallocentris is also ridiculous. My work proves the opposite.
8) It seems to me that the meta-text of this debate is rather an attempt to degrade sexology in favor of gender studies.

In a Canadian psychological blog Through a Jungian Lens Johann Lemmer is linked to Carl Jung in a positive way .
Johann Lemmer, in his work, Introduction to Sexology, discusses CG Jungs concepts in terms of sexuality and suggests that
the moral issues that confront modern man are often centered around sexuality and points to the masculine and feminine
images and archetypes discussed by Jung as psychologys attempt to deal with the issues. One needs to remember that
Jungs work was built on the foundation of Freuds work which has a significant focus on human sexuality.
Lemmer grounded Sexology as a science in 2005 with his book Introduction to Sexology. He presented the first epistemological theory
of Sexology as an universal-integral science, with meta-theories, theories, basis theories and praxis theories.

Since 2003 Prof Lemmer developed, maintained and lectured curricula for Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral students in Sexology
(see www.sexology.co.za ) and several students graduated in sexology under his supervision.
He was re-elected in 2014 as president of the CSHP (Council of Sexual Health Professions) in South-Africa for a 5 year term.
