Welcome Time
What You Need: An offering container
What You Do:
Tell kids that we all have habits, whether we like to admit it or not. Habits are things we do
regularly a lot of times without thinking. Habits can also be very hard to change
(especially if we have gotten into a bad habit) or very hard to start (especially if we are trying to
get into a good habit). Ask them why bad habits are hard to break and why good habits are
hard to start. Talk to kids about what their habits are. Talk to them about good and bad habits
we have. Ask if they can think of any consequences of a bad habit or benefits of a good habit.
Activity #1
What You Need: Notebooks or journals from last week, extras; pens; markers
We are challenging kids this month to Stand Up and Get in the Story and to realize they are
part of Gods big story. This week, instruct kids to add the third chapter to the Table of
Contents: Rescued. Ask them to write or illustrate a story explaining why they need Jesus;
encourage them to think of an example of what Jesus rescued them from. (Some kids might
need to be prompted that this includes anything sinful in their lives. Allow them to share if they
choose to.) Collect the books for the fourth and final week. Put notebooks in bin for final
week.
Activity #2
Habit Forming
What You Need: paper; markers; Good Habits Activity Page
What You Do:
Using the paper, on the top of the page write GOD. From GOD draw 3 arrows. Explain to
the kids that God is ALWAYS communicating with us. Can they think of ways God talks to us?
(Bible, friends/family/believers, Holy Spirit) For each idea mentioned, draw an arrow from God
and write the ideas along the arrow.
[Apply] Ask the kids what we should be in the habit of doing when God communicates
with us. (We should get into the habit of listening) At the end of each arrow, in a different
color marker, write YOU and draw an arrow from YOU to GOD. Emphasize, as you
draw arrows from YOU to GOD, one of the best habits we can develop is listening to
God. For each of the arrows going from YOU to GOD, ask the kids what habits they
could develop to help them listen to God. Write their responses along the arrow. (Note: See
Good Habits Activity Page for an example of what this should look like.)
