STUDENT MANUAL
Learning Area : The Air Around Us
Learning Objective : Understanding that oxygen is needed for combustion
Element 1 : Construct: C1, C4, C 6, C8, C10, C11
Instructions:
1. Carry out activity and record observation with results.
2. Write a task report
Activity Report Format:
1. Title : Oxygen and Combustion
2. Aim : To study the effect of size of container on the length of time a candle burns
3. Variables: C10
4. Hypothesis: State relationship between the size of container and the length of
time candle burns C11
5. Apparatus/ Material :
6. Procedure :
7. Observation and results:C1 & C 6 – communication (diagrams of activity)
8. Discussion and analysis (C 8) – answer the questions given.
• a) In which container does the candle burn for the
(i) longest time?.................................
(ii) shortest time? …………………….
• b) Give a reason for your observation.
• c) What gas is needed for combustion?
2.0 Variables:
1a,b,c
6a,c,d
Plasticine
Procedure:
1. Candles P,Q dan R were fixed on the table using plasticine. 10c
2. The three candles were lighted
3. Each beaker was inverted over a burning candle of the same type and
size at the same time.
4. The length of time of each candle burns were observed and recorded.
5.0 Observation: C6, 1e,f, 8a √ C1:3
√ C6:3
6.0 Analysis:
Conclusion : The bigger the size of the container the longer the time taken for a
candle to burn/ A large container allows a candle to burn longer in it
than a small container
