The 2012 Shell Sustainability Report
highlights Shell approaches and practices
for the successful implementation, in 2012,
of its sustainability principles.
From the onset, the 2012 Shell Sustainability Report states that Shell
sustainability vision for the past year was to help build a sustainable
energy future and this translated in Shell eort to increase natural
gas production as well as investment in innovative, cleaner and more
ecient technologies. Shell also heavily invested in the development
of alternative energies, carbon capture and storage, as well as other
CO2 related R&D.
Royal Dutch Shell PLC is well aware of its societal responsibility to the
global community at large and has subsequently designed a
Sustainability Strategy (Environment and Society) that focuses on

the following essential pillars: Sustainable development,

Environment, Society, Safety, Performance data and Sustainability
reporting.
The report also illustrates various programs and projects the completion
of which particularly highlighted Shell commitment to sustainable
business practices: Namely, amongst other initiatives, the improvement
of energy eciency at Pernis Renery (Netherlands), project development
as well as Environment Protection activities in China, community
activism and collaboration in the arid ranching region of Eagle Ford in
southern Texas.
Shell also invested resources and energies in building local
opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneur while
conceiving and implementing various program with the aim of
ensuring the eectiveness of sustainable business practices in its
supply chain.
The report further elaborates and provides detailed quantitative
data that illustrate Shell achievement in the various aspects of its
sustainability program (page 34) as well as clear gures and tables
on its 2012 environmental and social performance.
Finally, the 2012 Shell report contains various statements, open
letters and recommendations from various third parties (Academics,
civil society and local community representatives, business
partnersetc.), from dierent parts of the world(Artic region ,
Malaysia, Philippines, Nigeriaetc.) acknowledging and celebrating
Shell contribution to various sustainability and community initiatives.
The 2012 Shell report is concluded by an incorporated review of its
content, form, approach, clarity and transparency by an External
Review Committee whose role is to thoroughly assess the report.
The ERC is constituted by various representative of the global
community and its succinct review of this document provide an
overall positive feedback of the 2012 Shell report ,with few criticism
concerning the lack of strategic context and content and the
desirability of a more comprehensive presentation of Shell vision ,
strategy and metrics for sustainable development.
