The Fitness Formula: Different for everyone By A. Jibbs

ym memberships are
trite, expensive and
often purchased with
well-intended, but blind
ambition. This leaves no one
to wonder why 85% of the
population does not engage in
a regular fitness routine.
Something is not working.
Why are people purchasing
gym memberships, going hard
core for a few weeks and then
dropping out, dejected and
disappointed in themselves.
Two words: accountability
and community. Despite the

ample selection of programs

and classes at what has
become a buffet selection of
gyms, these two core things
are lacking disabling folks
from being successful in their
fitness journey.
This is what Dr. Glenn
Foss wants to offer to that
85%. Tailored programs,
human connection, and a
community of encouragement
with the introduction of
Advanced Fitness & Wellness
Center. Having been in the
business of physical rehabili-

tation and working with all

levels of sport related injuries,
Dr. Foss felt there was never
an adequate step down program for individuals following
their physical rehabilitation.
These individuals need guidance in subsequent exercise
and activity to support the
strengthening and conditioning from their rehab program.
But now with their newly
built facility adjunct to
Advanced Sports Medicine,

Answer: Growth income liquidity tax-advantages + safety

Question: What are the most important investment attributes you
would demand of your retirement portfolio?
By Mark Charnet

ts a great question isnt it,

but, the answer is even
better, at least I believe so
and Ill tell you why. Folks,
Im in my 54th year and there
are more years behind me
than in front of me, especially
working and earning years;
this means the closer I get to
retirement, the more interested I become in my retirement
portfolio and you should too.
Certainly, I do not mean creating the retirement portfolio
that you should have started
years ago, no, I mean preparing to depend on one!

When you hang-up your

hat for the last time at your
job, you will be dependent on
the portfolio that you constructed over the last three
decades to provide for your
wife and yourself. In my case,
hopefully there will be some
Social Security left for my
wife and I, but, it will be of little consequence should it be
curtailed or eliminated before
I even get the first check at
my age of 67. I have always
poked fun at Social Security,
even since my very first paycheck at 14 years of age. Back

then, Sy Weiner, the owner of

Singers Department Store in
Pompton Lakes, promised me
I was being paid $2.35 an
hour, minimum wage at the
time. After school I would put
in my time emptying the trash
bins, stocking shelves, vacuuming the carpeting and dusting/mopping the floors. With
great anticipation I tore open
the envelope containing the
first paycheck and stub of my
working life after working 10
hours that week. Much to my
surprise, the check was a lot
less than the $23.50 that was
promised to me, so this young
14 year old rushed into the
owners office to inform him
of a math calculation error.
Sy, informed me of the following: Mark, those letters on
the stub indicate withdrawals
from your check before you
receive the net dollars. First
is Fed-With, which is for federal income tax and there is
another deduction for NJ
income tax too. Next is SUI
and that is for state unemployment insurance and this one
called FICA is for your retirement, he said firmly. Every
pay period, the government
takes out of your pay a portion
that goes into an account with
your name and number on it,
to be returned to you when
you are 65 years old, this is
called Social Security!
Sy, bless his heart, didnt
know or realize that in that

one statement defining Social

Security, he was doubly
wrong! The first misnomer
was that my money was going
into an account with my
name and number on it, when

actually it was being paid to

current retirees who were collecting from the system. The
second error was that I was
going to get my retirement
share at age 65. The government has now determined
that my FRA full retirement
age is now 67 and there is no
guarantee of that at all! What
remains to be seen is if I ever
receive a Social Security
check at all! I believe that
certain people will be rendered ineligible due to their
individual financial success;

meaning a new government

instituted asset and means
test, where a committee will
be created to determine if
your contribution to FICA
will be changed to a donation

instead, for the benefit of the

greater good. That would be
proof of the third paycheck
misinformation espoused to
me back in 1975. It wasnt Sys
fault or any employers for that
matter, how could they have
known or predicted the
future. But, the whole story
sounded a little fishy to me,
even then, so I did something
about it.
I decided not to rely or
depend on Social Security
even though I was forced to

contribute to it. Instead, I was

determined to consider my
Social Security check, if I ever
got one, as gravy or icing on
the cake. I adopted the financial attitude, If It Is to Be, Its
Up to Me! And therefore
determined that my retirement portfolio possess all of
the answers in the Answer
title of todays column:
Growth Income Liquidity
Tax-Advantages + Safety! I
asked the question of myself
and answered it as it is written; my retirement portfolio
required all of these features
when creating it, adding to it,
and eventually when withdrawing from it.
This leads me to a few
questions. 1. Do you agree
with me? 2. Does your need
for retirement funds and what
they must accomplish when
you hang-up your working hat
for the last time, require the
same attributes as indicated
on this list? 3. Lastly, is your
retirement portfolio invested
properly with these requirements included? 4. Not sure,
need another opinion, dont
think so, not enough confidence in the allocation or perhaps your current advisor or
your own investing efforts? If
there is some doubt, even the
slightest degree, APG representatives, like myself, charge
no fees to see! No American
Prosperity Group office will
charge you to take a look, give

you our opinion of your current financial situation, and

determine your preparedness
for the next market correction, crash or if we see any
deficiencies in your allocations. We might even congratulate you or your current
advisor for a job well done,
but, you wont know unless
you contact us for a no fee
review. Its just that simple
and I encourage you to take
advantage of this opportunity.

Shomrei Torah 6th & 7th graders hosted a culminating event called a Tomchui Mitzvah Fair.
After studying different mitzvot, each student selected a non for profit organization near and dear to their
heart reflecting a mitzvah and presented it to all the students in the religious school, parents, and other
grownups. All the tzedakah (charity) collected throughout the year will be allocated and sent to the
organizations represented. The organizations selected were: American Cancer Society,
Wildlife Conservation Society, UNICEF, Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society, and
Liberty in North Korea. It was a lovely morning and totals are being counted now.

Top 5 ways seniors can keep cool in the summer heat

larly are at high risk for suffering a heat-related illness.
Thus it is especially important
for senior citizens to keep cool
in the summer heat. Here are
some ways how:

ummer is a season with

many activities taking
place outdoors in the
warm temperatures and long
days. As people venture outside to enjoy their favorite
summer pastime, extremely
high temperatures can affect
the bodys ability to keep cool.
Persons over age 65 particu-

1. Seek an air-conditioned
environment: If your home is
not air conditioned, visit an
air-conditioned
shopping
mall, movie theater or public
library to cool off.
2. Plan outdoor activities in
the morning when it is cooler:
It is important to minimize
direct exposure to the sun as
much as possible. Therefore, all
outdoor activities should be
planned for early mornings

when it is cooler and the sun is

less harsh. As much as possible,
use the shaded areas under
trees or covered porches.

3. Take a cool shower, bath,

or sponge bath: Heat stroke is
the most serious heat-related
illness and occurs when the

body becomes unable to control its temperature. When

the bodys temperature rises
too fast, the body loses its
ability to sweat and is unable
to cool down. The most relaxing way to cool down your
bodys temperature is to take a
nice long cool shower or bath.
4. Stay hydrated: Seniors
should avoid caffeine and
alcoholic beverages as much
as possible as they accelerate
dehydration. Drinking plain
water is great, but may not be
adequate as the body also loses
sodium and potassium salts
through sweating. Popular
sports drinks taste great and
are an effective way to replen-

ish the bodys loss of sodium.

5. Dress appropriately:
Everyone, especially seniors,
should wear light colored,
loose fitting, cool clothing
(preferably cotton) and use
head coverings like hats or
caps. As seniors skin is sensitive they should use high SPF
sun blocks (30+) and avoid
direct sun as much as possible
by seeking out shaded spots.

Save taxes with summertime planning

ooking to reduce your

2015 income taxes?
Consider these summertime strategies.

NDS
ALL BRIACED
SERV

Take a credit for summer

day care. If you have one or
more children under age 13,
your costs of in-home childcare, a day care facility, or
sending the kids to day camp
may qualify for the Child and
Dependent Care Tax Credit.
The costs must be incurred to
enable you (and your spouse,
if you file jointly) to work or

look for work and you generally must report some earned
income. Payments to your
spouse, your dependent, or
your child who is under age
19 at the end of the year
arent eligible. Overnight
camps and summer school
tutoring wont qualify either.
The credit can equal up
to 35% of qualifying expens-

es, depending on your

income. Total expenses are
limited to $3,000 for one
child and $6,000 for two or
more.
Combine business with
pleasure. Add vacation days
to a summer business trip, and
bring your family along. You
can deduct most of your own
(but not your families) unre-

imbursed costs, such as airfare

and your share of meals and
lodging during the business
portion of your trip.
Put your kids to work. If
you own a business, give your
children a summer job. You
can deduct their wages, and if
youre a sole proprietor, you
neednt withhold social security or Medicare taxes as long
as your kids are under 18.
They can even use their earnings to set up an IRA.
Clean out your garage
and take a deduction. Donate
your excess property to a
qualifying charity and deduct
the fair market value. Be sure
to get a receipt and check the
documentation rules for highvalue items.

How to protect your pets from extreme heat

xtreme heat can be

unpleasant for anyone,
and pets are no exception. While its easy for men
and women to detect if their
bodies are responding negatively to heat, those warning
signs may not be so prevalent
in pets, who may suffer in
silence as the mercury continues to rise.
Pet owners must pay special attention to their pets on
hot days, which the Humane
Society of the United States
notes can be both uncomfortable and dangerous for pets. In
an effort to help pet owners
protect their pets from the
summer heat, the HSUS offers

the following tips to pet owners

who want to keep their pets
cool and safe this summer.
Dont leave pets in a
parked car. The temperature
inside a vehicle can quickly
approach dangerous levels on
hot days, so pet owners should
never leave their pets in parked
cars, even if they leave the air
conditioning on and the
engine running. The HSUS
notes that on an 85-degree day,
temperatures inside cars with
slightly cracked windows can
reach 102 degrees in as little as
10 minutes. Rather than taking
pets with you on car trips, leave
them at home inside a comfortably air conditioned room

where they wont be vulnerable

to rising temperatures.
Change pets exercise regimen. Pet owners who make
sure their pets get daily exercise
should change such routines
when temperatures are on the

rise. Midday walks or jogs

should be switched to evenings
or early mornings, when temperatures tend to be at their
most moderate. In addition, cut
back on the time spent exercising, as pets may have trouble

breathing on hot days. When

taking your dog for a jog or a
run in the summertime, do so
on the grass, avoiding asphalt,
as hot asphalt can do significant damage to your pets paws.
Be mindful of your breed.
Dog owners should recognize
that certain dogs can handle
the heat better than others.
Short-nosed breeds have a
harder time in extreme heat
because their shorter airways
dont allow as much time for
the air they breathe in to cool
as dogs with longer noses. In
addition, the HSUS points out
that dogs with white-colored
ears are more susceptible to
skin cancer than other dogs,

making it imperative that owners of such dogs reduce their

exposure to the sun on hot days
when the UV index is especially dangerous.
Let
dogs
inside.
Doghouses might not be as
prevalent as they once were,
but many owners still keep doghouses in their backyards so
their four-legged friends have a
place to relax outdoors on lazy
afternoons. But doghouses can
be similar to parked cars on
especially hot days, making rising temperatures feel even hotter. Let dogs hang out inside in

Learn to recognize the
signs of heatstroke. Pets suffering from heatstroke will
exhibit certain symptoms, and
pet owners who learn to recognize those symptoms can do
something about them before
its too late. Heavy panting,
glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat,
difficulty breathing, excessive
thirst, and lack of coordination are just a few potential
indicators that a pet is suffering from heatstroke. Animals
that are very old, very young,
overweight, and unaccustomed to prolonged exercise,

how much you will need for

times the width of each rectangular section of your house in
feet, going by what you can
