Dear World Languages Teacher:


On behalf of Central Valley World Language Association and the Sanger High School
World Language Department, we are pleased to invite you and your students to our
22st World Languages Fair, a Bi-Annual event, Saturday, April 11, 2015. Please
note the pre-registration deadline of March 06, 2015.
As you know CVWLAs World Language Fair proudly offers a variety of activities for
students of all levels, which include:

Teams sport competitions: Soccer and Volleyball
Food & Crafts Booth,
Talent shows and much more!!
Please take a look inside this package for a complete description of the variety of
activities world language students will be enjoying this year at the Fair, as some
activities require prior preparation and prior registration.
As in the past our entertainment chair will post and announce the winners right after a
contest or competition has been completed and judged, rather than holding an Awards
Ceremony toward the end of the day, when many schools have already called their
students to their buses. Winners will be asked to claim their trophies or prices at the
Fair Stage.
The World Languages Fair has proven to be a great student motivator and with your
support and participation, we are certain that this fair will be bigger and better. If you
are new to this event and have questions we havent answered in this information

FAIR OVERVIEW
Central Valley World Language Association

LANGUAGES:
French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Hmong
PARTICIPANTS: The academic and sports competitions are open mainly to
secondary students
(grades 7-12). Students receive stamps
on passport for participation in a
variety of activities.
Teachers may choose to reward their students in whatever
way they
see fit.

AREAS OF PARTICIPATION ARE THE FOLLOWING:


1.*Contests*: Students must be pre-registered in the proper grade level of
competition for some contests. Registration forms must be postmarked by
March 6, 2015.
NO teams will be accepted for competition after the registration due
date.
2. Games 'n Things: Recreational activities will be available. Pre-registration
is not necessary.
3.*Performances at main stage*: Pre-registration is necessary in order to
schedule the events and assure a time slot.
4.*Food booth*: Sponsors of food sales must send in the appropriate
application with a description of the food items, details of handling, and the
name of the school organization for which the proceeds of the sale will be used.
NO COMMERCIAL VENDORS, PLEASE!
5.*Craft booth*: Sponsors of craft sales must send in the appropriate
application with a description of the items being sold and the name of the
school organization for which the proceeds of the sale will be used. NO
COMMERCIAL VENDORS, PLEASE!
6.*Fees*: The following fees are necessary in order to provide prizes and
other expenses incurred in organizing the World Languages Fair:
A. A fee of $5 per passports for students when paid in advance. The
price at the gate will be $10 for all students. Teachers and their assistants
(Non-Current High School Students) over 18 may attend the fair for free.
B. A fee of only $15 per booth involved in food and craft sales. We
have kept the food booth
fee very low in order to encourage more food
booths! All profits from your booth will
remain within your
organization.
Organizations sponsoring a food and craft booths will be registered on a first come, first serve
basis, to have the right to sell a particular food item. We wish to encourage a variety of foods,
so we have decided to allow only two booths per food item. We will let you know immediately
if your item choice has been spoken for twice already.

PLEASE NOTE: ORGANIZATIONS WILL NEED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN


CHANGE.
SOFT DRINK BEVERAGES ARE OK TO BE SOLD BY BOOTHS.
WATER WILL ONLY BE SOLD BY CVWLA.
ABSOLUTELY NO OUTSIDE VENDORS WILL BE ALLOWED.

2015 CVWLA World Languages Fair


Language Activities
1. Bingo/Lotera: ONE STAMP PER STUDENT FOR BINGO, but may play as
often as they like.
2. Fortune Telling: ONE STAMP PER STUDENT, but may participate as often as
they like.
3. Marriage Chapel: ONE STAMP PER STUDENT, but may participate as often
as they like.
4. Identiphone: A "mystery" voice (teacher supervisor) asks the student
questions in the target language. The questions will be typical items of
personal data, which one would expect, in everyday conversation. Students
must have access to their own or friends cellular phone to participate.
5. Songfest: Familiar songs in foreign languages will be sung, and
circumstances permitting, new songs will be taught.
6. Folk Dancing: Here is a chance to learn a new dance or practice one you
already know.
7. Jeopardy: An activity similar to the popular television show.
8. Jig-saw: A nice, cool way to practice vocabulary at all levels.
9. Identigrab: Students will be asked to identify 20 objects within a time limit.
Open to first and second year students.
10. Tell It Like It Is: The contestants tell about who, where and what is going
on in the pictures provided by the examiner. Some choice of scenes and
preparation time will be allowed before the performance. Evaluation will be
based on quantity of information, accuracy, pronunciation, organization of
thoughts, and ingenuity. Open to all levels.
11. Speed Dating: The contestants will ask and answer questions based on
language level. The meetings will be timed then contestant will move to next
contestant. Contestants who participate will qualify for Marriage Chapel fast
pass.

12. *Original Poetry*: Student poets are invited to submit original poetry in
the target language together with their school's entry application by March 6,
2015. All identification should be withheld from the face of the poem, but on
the reverse side the name, level of target language study, school, and teacher
should be clearly visible.
13. Writing for Fun: Student writers are invited to attend a writers' session
on the day of the fair. Expository-prose topics will be assigned appropriate to
Levels I, II, III, IV and native-speakers, and a writing period of one hour will be
allowed. Dictionaries will be permitted but not provided. Judging will be based
on clarity of expression and originality. Certificates will be awarded on all
levels. Outstanding essays may be published in the CVWLA newsletter.
14. Language Bee: Contestants speak or write words, phrases, or sentences.
Simple cues for levels 1 & 2; more complex ones for levels 3 and above. Open
to all levels. (Antonyms, subject-verb agreement, math equations)
15. Language Tasting. All languages. Come and experience full immersion in
the language of your choice.
16. Spin The Wheel: A French Trivia activity that you can put in the passport.
17. Hungry Hungry Frenchman: Tossing croissants through the mouth of the
Frenchman carnival style game.
18. International Waiters Race: Students will race around a specific area
wearing a waiters jacket, carrying a tray of plastic food and water cup.

2015 CVWLA WORLD LANGUAGES FAIR


CONTESTS & COMPETITIONS
1. Stage-a-scene: This is a team or individual event for students interested
in presenting an excerpt of a play from a published author or a studentdeveloped play or scene. The presentation should take no more than ten
minutes. Points will be awarded in the following areas: a) remaining within the
ten-minute limit; b) costumes; c) language (pronunciation, diction,
comprehensibility); d) interpretation; e) overall quality.
2. *Poster Contest*: Students can submit a poster of original design
publicizing language and culture. See requirements in announcement within
this packet. Poster must be submitted by 10:00 am the day of the fair. First
place will receive $25.
3. Graphic Design Contest: Students must submit a digital graphic design
that depicts the study of a World Language and culture. See requirement within
this packet. First place will receive $25 prize. Preregistration is required and
design must be submitted by March 6, 2015.
4. *Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest*: Teams of 3 people. Theme is language
and culture. Participants will have one hour from 11:30-12:30 to begin and
finish artwork. CVWLA will provide chalk. First place will receive $30 prize.
5. Whose line is it?: Students try their hand at acting. Students enter in
teams (no more than 4 members) according to language level. The skits will
last from three to five minutes. Each team is allowed ten minutes to prepare
the skit. Skits are judged on fluency of expression, appropriate vocabulary, and
originality. (Topics will be provided.)

6. Categories/Catch Phrase: Team game. Students will enter in teams of


two. One student will be provided a cue, and he/she will try to attempt to elicit
a correct response based on that cue from the other members of the team.
The team will play against opposing teams.
7. Listen and Draw: A fun two-person team event. Team members sit facing
each other. Team member (team member A) will have some diagrams or
pictures and will describe them for team member B. Team member B will try to
draw the pictures or diagrams. After a specified time limit team members
change roles. Team member B will describe the picture while team member A
will draw them.
8. Soccer: (See application in this packet. *Pre-registration required*.)
A maximum of one team per language per school may register. Play is
conducted in the target language. Each team must have at least five girls.
Only 1 level: Level II (grades 9-12). No soccer shoes. Players must wear
tennis shoes.
No bare feet.
There is a 16 minutes game time limit.
Participants must carry school ID cards. (Each team must supply its own ball.)
We encourage students to sign up for only one sporting event. Any English
spoken during the game will be considered an infraction that will
result in a free kick (outside the penalty box) for the opposing team.
9. Volleyball
(See application in this packet. Pre-registration
required.) One team per language per school may be registered. Play is
conducted in the target language. Teams must be co-educational, consisting of
six members on the court, three of whom must be girls. (Each volleyball team
must send a roster of up to 12 members.) If possible, the sponsor should be
with the team as it plays. Team members must carry School ID cards. Each
team must supply its own ball. We encourage students to sign up for only one
sporting event.
Server must announce score in the team's target
language before each serve. The use of English will result in either a
loss of service for the serving team or the loss of a point for the
receiving team.
10. Scavenger hunt: 10:00, 11:00, & 1:00pm
11. Dance! Dance! Dance! Students show off their dance skills to popular
tunes from a variety of cultures at the main stage area.

Food Booth
Pre-registration is required for all booths. In order to prevent duplication of items and activities, applications will be
considered in the order received. If there are more than two applications to sell any item, you will be contacted.
Beverages, other than water, may be sold at booths. Examples: soft drinks, horchata, juices, etc.
Your team is responsible for bringing all equipment and materials needed for setting up your booths.
Sanger High School will provide one table per booth, please plan accordingly! Also please bring any other necessary
items such as extension cords. Make sure you have plenty of change (dimes, quarters, etc.) and personnel to man your
booth. (Remember: No change will be provided.)
Sponsors of food booths are urged to avoid the use of perishable items. List the type of food by name and the quantity
you propose to have on hand. You are responsible for keeping the area around your booth clean. After the fair your
group must deposit your trash in the designated bin.
CVWLA does not prepare signs or posters for the booth. Each club must provide the following information to
be displayed at each booth: Name of school and/or club sponsoring the booth.

CVWLA is requesting a $15 booth charge. Please attach the fee to your application.

2015 LANGUAGE FAIR SOCCER TEAM REGISTRATION

SOCCER INSTRUCTIONS
1. Each school will provide a roster of its players. Each player must carry a passport
and a school I.D. card.
2. Each team may have up to 15 members. Only 11 players may be on the field at
once. Each team must have at least five girls on the field at all times.
3. Wear shorts and tennis shoes. No soccer shoes. T-shirts or sweatshirts should be of
the same color.
4. Game will last 16 minutes. After each game there will be a 10 minutes break before
the next game begins.
5. In a tie game the referee will require penalty kicks - first three goals: the first team
to kick will be decided by a coin-flip.
6. The coin-flip will be used to decide which team has the ball at the beginning of the
game.
7. Be on time. You will forfeit the match if you do not show up within 10 minutes.
8. Speaking the target language is required. Use of English or non-target
language is an infraction, which, will result in a free kick (outside the
penalty box) for the opposing team.
9. Only disagreements in the target language will be accepted. This rule also applies
to team sponsors.
10. Each team must bring a soccer ball (regulation size).
11. Be good sports. The referee has the final word.
(In order to qualify for a prize, each team's players must be present prior to the start
of the game and each team must play one game.)

Each soccer player should carry his or her own accident insurance and
must be on the roster.

VOLLEYBALL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Each school will provide a roster of its players. Each player must carry a
passport and school I.D. card.
2. Each team may have up to 12 members rotating in with only 6 members on
the court at once. Each team must have at least three girls on the court at all
times.
3. Be present when your team is scheduled to start. Failure to be available with
a regulation team will result in forfeiture.
4. Flip of coin for serve. Fifteen point games. 15 minutes game limit. The
team leading at 15 minutes wins. (For the semifinal and final matches, 2 out of
3 games will determine the winner.)
5. The server will announce the score in the appropriate language; say "serve",
and then serve.
6. Use only the target language while playing; the use of English will
result in the loss of the serve for the serving team or b) loss of a point
for the receiving team.
7. Have fun, but remember that harassment of officials by team members or
coach can result in the loss of points or the forfeiture of game.
8. Each team must bring a ball.
9. No new teams will be added after the official ladder is established.

SIDEWALK ART CONTEST


CVWLA's Sidewalk Art Contest is open to any student (or students) currently
studying a foreign language.
Theme: Language and Culture.
Teams of 3 students.
Participants will have one hour from 11:30am -12:30pm
to begin and finish artwork the day of the fair.
Entries must be identifiable with the student's name,
grade level, language level, school and teacher's name.
CVWLA will provide chalk.

ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL.


The entries will become the property of CVWLA and may be used for
CVWLA publicity material. CVWLA will provide chalk.
Deadline: Entry form must be filled out and returned
by March 6, 2015.
Criteria for judging will be:

POSTER CONTEST
CVWLA's Poster Contest is open to any student (or students) currently
studying a foreign language.
Theme: Language and Culture.
Entries must be on any standard size poster board and may include moving
parts. The poster may be in color or in black and white.
Entries must be identifiable on the back with the student's name,
grade level, language level, school and teacher's name.

ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL.


The entries will become the property of CVWLA and may be used for
CVWLA publicity material.
Deadline: 10:00 a.m., April 11, 2015

Opportunities for students to perform are an important part of the World Languages Fair.
Performances may be:

Each talent event should be limited to 5 minutes. Microphone and speakers will be
provided by Sanger High School. All other props are the responsibility of the performing
group. Please give a brief description and estimated duration of each talent entry.

FAIR GRAPHIC DESIGN CONTEST
CVWLA's Graphic Design Contest is open to any student (or students)
currently studying a foreign language.
Theme: Language and Culture.
The selected winners design will be silk-screened to a T-Shirt/T-shirts that
will be used by CVWLA for promotional activities such as future Language
Fairs and Language Camps.
Entries must be submitted via a JPEG image by email to
mary_rascon@sanger.k12.ca.us
Entries must be identifiable with the student's name, grade level, language
level, school and teacher's name.

ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL.
