Assignment 1: Know atomic structure and the physical principles of ionising

radiation and ultrasound

In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria.
Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found.

Criteria
To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that
reference the learner is able to:

Task no.

P1

Describe radioactivity, including atomic structure

P2

Describe the production of x-rays and ultrasound

M1

Explain the random nature of decay and how it

relates to half-life

D1

Analyse the effects of the operation and design of

the tube/head on a typical x-ray spectrum

Evidence

Learner declaration
I certify that the work submitted for this assignment is my own. I have clearly referenced any
sources used in the work. I understand that false declaration is a form of malpractice.

Purpose of this assignment

Assignment 1: Know atomic structure and

and ultrasound

Know atomic structure and the physical principles of ionising radiation and
ultrasound
Scenario

You work for a company supplying medical physics equipment and training to the NHS. An
increase in demand for medical imaging equipment and nuclear medicine has meant that you
have had to expand and employ more people in the company. The new employees ranging
from office staff to sales people and training providers need to be trained up in all aspects of
nuclear medicine and medical imaging before they can start work for the company. You will
produce the necessary training materials and exercises for these new employees.
Task 1

Draw sequences which show what happens to radioactive elements when they lose: an alpha
particle; a beta particle. What happens to an atom when gamma rays are emitted?
This provides evidence for P1
Task 2

Draw a fully labelled diagram with explanations demonstrating the principles of: an X-ray tube;
production of ultrasound and the different scan types.
This provides evidence for P2
Task 3

Using graph paper, show a decay curve and mark on: the axis showing the fraction of
undecayed nuclei remaining, the axis showing time, half-life intervals, fractions of original
number of undecayed nuclei remaining
This provides evidence for M1
Task 4

Use a suitable diagram to analyse what happens to the x-ray spectrum when the tube voltage
is changed. Show some known x-ray peaks in your diagram. What do these peaks tell you?
This provides evidence for D1
