Brian

I invented Suction Tires to ride up walls and

ceilings because I wanted to take bike riding
to new heights.
In our science class, we learned that an
octopus has eight arms with a bunch of
suction cups that can stick to almost
anything and then I got the idea to attach
suction cups to my bike tires to ride on walls.
After a lot of different designs, I managed to
keep the suction cups attached to the tires
with glue and screws.
I made the final sketch and I posted
my idea at
InventNow.org. I hope that, soon enough, we
can ride up walls!

I invented Hide-N-Seek 4000 because I needed a challenge. I

always thought that a robot with eyes could be really good at
finding things, so I designed a robot to play Hide-N-Seek.
My robot can use its arms to push back curtains and branches
of trees. It also needs to hide, so I added a switch that changes
it from a seeker to a hider.
I used a computer, an old camera and a filing cabinet to design
Hide-N- Seek 4000 and then I posted my idea at InventNow.org.

In 1762 John Montagu, an English Earl, was too busy playing

cards to leave the table and have a formal meal. He asked
his servant to put some meat between two pieces of bread
and bring it to him. This snack was named after him and
these days it is the most popular lunchtime meal in Britain.

These soft sweets were originally made and eaten by the

Egyptians more than three thousand years ago. They made
them from the root of the plant which shares the same
name and grows by the banks of the river Nile.

In 1905 eleven-year-old Frank Epperson mixed up a fruit

drink in his back garden, in San Francisco, California. By
accident he left the drink outside overnight. When he
discovered it in the morning, the juice had frozen around the
mixing stick. Young Frank had invented something which
would make him a lot of money.
In 1897 William Morrison and John C. Wharton, from
Nashville, Tennessee, invented a way of heating and
spinning sugar in thin threads onto a stick so that it forms a
large ball of fine material. When you eat it, it melts in your
mouth. It is commonly found, along with toffee apples, at
fairs and carnivals.

In 1904, at the St. Louis Worlds Fair, an unlucky ice cream

vendor ran out of dishes to put his ice cream in. Ernest
Hamwi was in the next stall selling Syrian pastry and
offered to help. He rolled up some of the pastry so that the
vendor could put his ice cream inside. It was a great success
and ice creams have been sold in this way ever since.

In 1930 Ruth Wakefield was busy making her favorite

chocolate biscuits in Whitman, Massachusetts, when she
realized that she had run out of baking chocolate. She broke
some normal eating chocolate into the mixture instead.
Ruth noticed that when the biscuits came out of the oven,
the chocolate hadnt melted but was still in small bits. These
biscuits have sold very well ever since.

CBB Ones new entertainment phenomenon

The Voice UK is a vocal contest series featuring people with real talent and great voices. Only the very
best singers make it through to the televised auditions and get the chance to perform in front of four
celebrity coaches. Praised by viewers and critics alike, it has become one of the most successful new
television shows around the world.
The Coaches
The artists will be selected, mentored and trained by four of the best and most successful singers in the
music industry: Tom Jones, Jessie J, will.i.am and Danny ODonoghe. The coaches only want to work
with the most talented artists.
The Blind Auditions
The shows format features three stages of contest: the Blind Auditions, the Battles and finally the
Live Shows.
During The Blind Auditions, the decisions from the coaches are based solely on the voices they hear and nothing else. The coaches hear the artists perform but dont get to see them and, if a coach is
impressed by an artists voice, he/she pushes a button to select the artist and their chairs rotate so they
can see them. If more than one coach turns his/her chair, the power shifts to the artist, who may then
choose which coach they most want to work with throughout the contest.
The Battles
Once the coaches have chosen their teams, the Battle is on. Coaches will dedicate themselves to
developing their artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success in the music
industry. During the Battles the coaches will pit two of their own acts against each other to sing a
duet in front of a studio audience. Immediately after the vocal face-off, the coach must choose which
artist will advance in the contest.
The Live Shows
At the end of the Battles, only the strongest members of each coachs team remain and proceed to
the Live Shows. In this final phase of the contest, the top artists from each team will compete against
each other during live broadcasts. The television audience will vote to save one artist on each team,
leaving the coach to decide who to save and who goes home. Each coach will have his/her best artist
left to compete in the final. From the final four remaining artists, one will be named The Voice and will win the prize of a lifetime, a recording contract with a very famous studio.

King Wally IV built Ballyhoo Castle in the 8th century.

It has had a long and turbulent history since then. In 1158, an

it over the next century.
The Germans bombed it twice during the Second World War.
Firstly, in 1940, the British army evacuated the occupants

a. Organizing. In your notebook, write a list of three or four main points in the
post you chose. Think about the way in which you can link these ideas. If
necessary, look for the connectors you will need to use in your summary and
write them down on a neaw list.
b. Drafting. Use your notes to write a draft of your summary. Remember
summaries only include the main points or facts and not the details of a text.
c. Editing. With your partner, exchange your summaries. Check that your
summary contains only the main points of the post you chose. Also, check for
mistakes and correct them.
d. Writing. Write the final version of your summary on a sheet of paper. Share
your post with a different pair and report the problem and its advice.

text. Do you agree?
Why? Why not?

b. Bullying facts.

c. Bullying in the future.

You can
beat them!
I. Bullying often starts when people
pick on something about you
that is different. It can be how big
you are, the color of your skin, or
how you are doing at school.
II. Bullying can happen to almost
anyone. They are all ordinary and
nice students who meet a very
nasty person.
III. A special type of bullying is cyber bullying,
which uses electronic devices such as cell
phones and computers.
Happy slapping is another form of bullying,
where bullies film the attacks on a cell phone
camera and then they share the videos with
their friends. These attacks are illegal, so you
must report them to a teacher, a parent, or
even the police as soon as possible. They can
use any footage on cell phones as evidence of
the attacks.

IV. If any of this happens to you, tell

someone you trust: a friend, a
teacher, and/or your parents.
During breaks and lunchtime, try to
stay in safe areas of the school with
many other people. If someone
hurts you, tell a teacher
immediately and make sure you tell
your parents.
Dont show you are angry or upset,
and dont fight back. If you do this,
consider the fact that they can
blame you.

13 Read this excerpt from the novel My Second Life, by Faye Bird. With your partner,
discuss what you can understand about the excerpt and what you think the novel
is about.

Monday
Were going to see Grandma Millie later.
Remember, Ana? Rachel (my mom)
shouted through the bathroom door to
me as I got out of the shower.
Yes! What time is her operation?
We can go from three onwards. Ill
pick you up from school.
Thats fine! I shouted back.
Except I remembered that I had to meet
Jamie after school. We were going for a
coffee. Jamie is my friend, but I have
liked him for ages. For months. Hes going out with this girl in my year, Melissa, but
when we got back to school last week there were rumors going round that they broke up.
I was there when Zak asked Jamie about Melissa he just said she was no fun.
Although I always knew Melissa was a boring person, I never say anything to Jamie. Why?
I dont know. That day, I quickly suggested we go to the cafe after school the next day.
And now I would have to text him and tell him I couldnt make it! I wanted to see
Grandma Millie after her operation, but...it was gutting. Really gutting!
I opened the bathroom door and found myself face-to-face with Rachel more suddenly
than I anticipated.
Didnt realize you were still standing right there! I said
impatiently as I made my way into my room.
Ill meet you at school, okay? she shouted back.
Okay!
I looked at my phone to see if I had any messages.
Nothing.
I texted Jamie.
Cant make the cafe today. Got to see my gran.
Tomorrow? Ax
