A Cup of Blood

Emily watched helplessly as Harry tossed and turned in his bed. His chest wound had
re-opened and was causing him a lot of pain. His fever had returned. Harry eventually
stopped moving and was breathing heavily. Emily grabbed hold of a hand towel and
soaked it in freezing cold water. She dabbed it on his forehead. She sighed. Nathaniel
walked in.
“Mistress, Steve told me to tell you that you are needed” he said.
“But Harry needs to be taken care of” said Emily “I cannot leave him. He is in a lot of
pain”
“I will have Marilyn come in” said Nathaniel “In fact she is here now” and a sixteen
year old girl walked in. She bowed at Emily. She was short and had blonde hair. She was
a newborn vampire. She was rescued by Nathaniel. She was dying from a werewolf
attack when he found her. Emily passed her the wet towel.
“Okay” she said “Do not be alarmed if he suddenly takes your wrist. It is just a reflex.
Just try and calm him if he is in pain”
“Yes mistress” and she bowed again. Emily nodded and kissed Harry on the forehead.
Then she left the room and followed Nathaniel to the Basement.

Emily entered the Basement. Everything got upgraded. The training room had new
equipment, their weapons had been improved and a high-tech security system had been
put in place. Steve was sitting in the computer cage. Tobias, the Blacksmith was talking
with him. Ted, Luke and Paul entered the room behind her. Steve looked behind him. He
beckoned them forward.
“Tobias has come to me with a new victim” he said once they were with them “This
time it was a vampire”
“Yes. He was helping me in the forge” said Tobias “When he didn‟t come in for work, I
thought he just slept in. Then, two hours passed and he had not shown. I went to his
room at the hotel and found that the door had been broken into. When I walked in,
everything was turned upside down and blood covered the walls…”
“Ouch!” said Paul
“He isn‟t done” said Steve “Continue. Please, Tobias”
“I went into the bathroom and found him in the bath tub, half eaten. He had no head”
“Now he‟s done”

“Ew” said Emily “Has anyone checked it out?”

Page 1
A Cup of Blood

“We are about to now” said Steve “Tobias told the manager and the manager told the
cleaning staff to abandon that room until after we have swept through it and finished
our investigation”
“The town‟s people are scared out of their wits” said Tobias “This is the fourth killing
this month. Some won‟t come out of their homes”
“Well, all those who stay in their homes, are sitting ducks” said Ted “They seem to be
attacking at random. There isn‟t a pattern between the four murders”
“Well, this is body number two that we are able to keep as evidence” said Emily
“You mean you have not found the other two bodies?” asked Tobias
“Err… No, not exactly. Only a foot and a finger or two, but there was nothing else.
They were definitely eaten” said Paul “Sad. Do you suppose they are looking for
something?”
“Like what?” asked Steve
“I don‟t know. Something, it is a possibility”
“It is. We will not rule it out. Let‟s go and check into the hotel” said Steve and he
grabbed his black leather coat.

Ted pulled up to the Six Pence Hotel. They got out and glided in through the door. Emily
went to the reception desk. The receptionist looked up from her computer screen.
“Ah, Princess!” she said “Here is the key to room two-eleven” and she held a pair of
keys in her shaky hand. Emily took hold of her hand. The receptionist calmed. Her hand
stopped shaking.
“Have a calm mind” Emily told her “You still have people staying here. Let‟s not let
them see you scared and shaky. Okay?”
“Y-yes Princess”
“Good… oh, it is just Emily” and she walked back to her brothers. They entered the
lift and headed for the tenth floor.

Emily led the way through the green hallway to room two-eleven. The door had orange
cones at the front of it. It was hanging off of its hinges. Emily looked at the keys and
sighed. Steve touched her shoulder and she moved out of the way. He kicked the door
down.
“You are so paying for that” said Emily. Steve smiled down at her and entered the
room. The rest followed.
Page 2
A Cup of Blood

The room was a complete mess. The lounge was upside down and the tables were all
broken. The television looked like a large paw went through it. The bed was ruined and
was covered in blood. Luke went in through the door and started looking through the
bloody mess.
“Emily and Ted” said Steve “Check the bathroom” they nodded and walked towards
the bathroom. Steve and Paul looked in the living room and the kitchen.

Emily entered the room after Ted. She looked into the bath tub and saw the dead body.
“I know him” she said
“Huh?”
“That is Jason Canning. He moved here from the USA a few months ago”
“How do you know him?” asked Ted
“Oh, err… I met him at the library. He was doing part time work there for a couple of
weeks. He was having trouble finding where the adventure books went” Ted laughed
“What?”
“We both know that, that was so not the reason. I bet he wanted your number”
“Yeah, yeah, what does the body tell you, Dr. Love-bot?” Ted knelt next to the bath
and looked at the body. He put on a pair of white, latex gloves and poked and prodded
the corpse.

Steve walked in.

“What have we got?” he asked.
“This happened during the late hours of the night. I would say around midnight. He is
still full of blood… well, sort of” said Ted “His head was pulled off. So in order to do
that, the werewolf or wolves had to turn back into a human” Emily knelt beside Ted. She
pulled on one of her gloves. She traced her fingers around the bite mark that was on his
shoulder.
“The wolves were young. Adolescent, I would say” she pulled out a tooth “No more
than ten years -” her eyes rolled into the back of her head. In her mind images appeared
in her mind. She saw a solid figure. When he turned around, she saw Luke‟s face. He
looked straight at her. His mouth opened in surprise.
Whoa! They thought together.

Page 3
A Cup of Blood

“Emily?” said Steve. His voice was high with worry. Emily fell backwards into his arms.
Steve stroked her face “Em!” Her eyes snapped open. She began to breathe deeply.
“You okay, baby doll?” asked Ted.
“I, err… I think so” she said. Steve helped her stand up. Emily looked down at the
tooth “Luke?” she called and walked towards the bedroom. Steve and Ted just looked at
her, stunned. Emily entered the room. Luke was standing there. He too, was holding a
tooth.
“Did you just see… me?” he said. Emily nodded “And what I saw?”
“See what?” asked Steve. Emily nodded “What is going on?”
“We saw what happened” they said together.

They were all standing in the bedroom. Emily and Luke still held the teeth.
“So what did you see?” asked Steve “What happened here?”
“Jason was asleep when this happened” said Emily “That is why there is blood on the
bed” and she pointed at the bed.
“The wolves forced the door open” said Luke “But they looked… different”
“How so?” asked Ted
“They were dressed like normal teenagers. Their faces were clean and their hair was
groomed well” said Emily “They walked in to the room and changed into their disgusting
wolf-selves. They bit his throat and that killed him instantly”
“Then what?” asked Paul
“Then, they transformed back into humans and using their super-human strength,
ripped his head off. They then used a test tube and collected some of his blood and then
they put the head in…” he looked at Emily.
“In the wardrobe, they hanged it in the wardrobe” finished Emily. She pushed passed
her brothers and opened the wardrobe. She gasped. In amongst Jason‟s clothes, his
head was skewered onto a coat-hanger. Emily took a few steps back. A black rose hung
in his mouth.
“Patrick is behind this” she whispered.

Ted stepped forward. He still had his gloves on. He took the rose and looked at it. He
handed it to Steve.
“Careful! It has thorns” teased Ted. Steve rolled his eyes and took the rose.
“What do you suppose the thorns mean?” he asked. Everyone looked at Emily. She

Page 4
A Cup of Blood

stared at the rose.

“I don‟t know” she said “I don‟t think he is finished with me yet, though”
“Please don‟t say things like that” said Luke “It gives me the shivers. I hate black
roses. Bad memories” Emily smiled at him. She took the rose off of Steve and looked at
it herself. There was blood on the thorns and the petals. She smelt it. The blood was
that of vampires, but whom? It didn‟t smell like Jason‟s. It smelt familiar. She sighed.
For the time being, she would have to remain clueless in to what Patrick was trying to
tell her.

They went back downstairs. Emily gave the keys back.

“No one is to enter that room until we have gotten the body out… Okay?” she said. The
receptionist took the keys.
“Yes Emily” she said and bowed her head. Emily sighed and walked outside and got into
the car. Ted ignited the engine then drove off.

Emily walked straight to Harry‟s room. He was up and sitting by his window. Emily smiled.
“Hey there” she said “How are you feeling?” Harry turned and smiled at her.
“Been better” he replied Emily walked over and hugged him. She sat in the chair
across from him “So what happened?”
“We have another victim. He was killed in his hotel room early hours this morning by
juvenile wolves”
“Ouch”
“The wolves were clean. Like they had groomed themselves to make them look like
human kids! It will be hard to spot them in this town”
“I agree. It sounds like they are finally getting organised. What else did you find?”
“A black rose. With thorns”
“Patrick?”
“Who else are you thinking of?”
“Well, he hasn‟t been via the train, and the airport tapes are clear of his face. I don‟t
think he is anywhere near here. He is probably using the werewolves as pawns” Emily
nodded.
“Have you been walking around?”
“Only my room. Can you help me down to the others?”
“Sure” and she helped him stand up. He put one arm around her shoulders and they

Page 5
A Cup of Blood

walked slowly down to the Basement.

Steve looked up from the computer screen and smiled.

“Harry! Aren‟t you a sight for sore eyes?” he laughed. Emily rolled her eyes and Harry
smiled.
“Good to see you to” replied Harry as he sat down. Ted and Paul walked in from the
garage. The sleeves of their arms are sprayed with blood.
“What were you two doing?” asked Emily
“We grabbed a couple of guards and got that body out” replied Ted “We just put him
into Harry‟s emergency room” Harry rolled his eyes.
“A morgue, it is called a morgue, Ted” he sighed.
“Whatever. Oh! Did Emily tell you?” said Ted.
“Tell me what?” said Harry and he looked at Emily. She sighed.
“Luke and I seem to be telepathic” she said.

Harry‟s mouth dropped.

“What? Seriously?” he asked. Emily nodded “How?”
“Well, I don‟t know” she said.
“Her eyes went into the back of head” said Steve “She fell backwards, then her eyes
snapped open and she got up and walked to Luke”
“Did you feel dizzy or something like that?” asked Harry. Emily shook her head
“Okay… tell me, where‟s Luke?”
“How will I know!” she said
“Use the blood tie” Emily sighed and thought of Luke and only Luke. She thought of
his smile. The way his eyes sparkled when she appeared in front of him.
“Whoa! Look at her eyes!” cried Paul. They looked and saw that Emily‟s eyes had been
covered in a black shade.

In her mind she was flying through the streets of the village. She stopped at the front
of the library. Luke was standing there talking with the old librarian. Luke said thank
you to him and the librarian walked back inside. Luke‟s eyes went black.
Emily? He thought
Wow. We are telepathic she said what are you doing?
I was told that there was another victim. The librarian’s assistant, but something isn’t right.
Page 6
A Cup of Blood
Do you need us there?
Yes. It is a complete mess over here.
We are on our way and she came back to the room. Her brothers stared at her in
bewilderment. She swallowed.
“Luke needs us” she said “There is another body, at the library. It‟s the assistant. He
says something isn„t right”
“Err… did he just tell you that?” asked Steve
“Yes. Can we go now?”
“Y-yeah. Harry, would you be able to come?” asked Steve
“Yeah, I think so. Slowly though”
“Okay. Let‟s go”

They arrived at the library. Emily was the first to get out. She ran up the steps and into
Luke‟s waiting arms. Ted and Harry were next. Luke smiled. Steve and Paul soon joined
them.
“Well you got up them okay” Luke said to Harry.
“Yeah, I think being outside is what I needed. I feel a bit better” said Harry “Shall we
go in?” they nodded and walked through the giant doors and into the town library.

The library had cold, marble floors. On both levels, there were dozens of wooden
bookshelves that were at least, six meters high. In the middle of the large room, was a
long row of old oak desks each table had books and lamps on it. Their feet made echoes
as they made their way through the room. Luke opened the door leading to the living
quarters of the librarian and assistant. He pointed out the scratch marks on the door
then continued walking. He reached the door that led to the assistant‟s room. He took a
deep breath then opened the door. The six of them blocked their noses.

They walked in and all you could see was human blood. It hurt their noses and drove
their control over their thirst insane. It covered the roof, the floor and the walls. It
covered everything! Emily grasped Luke‟s hand as she looked around. Steve walked
further into the room. He looked around in disgust.
“Err… Emily, Luke, um… check the bedroom. Ted and Paul, the bathroom. Harry and I
will take the kitchen and this room” they all nodded and walked carefully through the
slimy mess.
Page 7
A Cup of Blood

Emily and Luke entered the bedroom. The window had been smashed and the curtains
ripped to shreds. Emily put on her gloves and tried not to breath. Luckily breathing was
an unnecessary habit. She looked unwillingly through the mess.
“The assistant wasn‟t alone” she said “In fact, a lot of people died here. I see what
you mean by it not seeming right”
“She must have been having a party of some sort” said Luke. He walked to the
wardrobe and opened it “Oh that is disgusting” Emily looked over. Her mouth dropped. A
child, no more than three was skinned and hanging in amongst the clothes. Black roses
had fallen out and spilled onto the blood covered ground.
“I cannot believe I loved this psycho” she said “What monster has the heart to kill a
baby!”
“I do not know, but this is getting way out of hand” Steve walked in. He flinched at
the sight of the baby. “Err… we have some more victims. This time at the, err… forge”
he said and he left. Luke reached for Emily‟s hand. She held it tightly and followed her
brother out of the room and through the library.

They walked through the town square towards the forge. Hardly anyone of the town‟s
people filled the streets. Some businesses had closed and bolted their doors. The rain
thundered overhead. Steve led the way into the forge. The climbed up the stairs to the
resident house and opened the door. The first room you walk into is the kitchen.
Nothing had changed in it. The table and chairs were in the right spot and nothing was
broken. They walked into the lounge room. One body lay on the ground. It was Tobias‟s
daughter, Amy. She had only just turned six. Her neck was broken. Emily knelt down
beside her. She looked at her neck. There were bite marks.
“Vampires” she said “Vampires did this” she stood up and walked into the first
bedroom. Her brothers followed. She opened the door. Two bodies. Tobias and his son.
His son was only a newborn. They were completely drained. Luke left the room and went
to the master bedroom.
“Steve” he called “I found his wife” they all walked towards him. When they looked
into the room, they found Lucy, Tobias‟s wife, on the bed. She was naked and was
covered in thorny, black roses.

“This is ridiculous!” said Steve “People are dying everywhere we turn. We have no

Page 8
A Cup of Blood

leads and the werewolves have finally grown some brains and are blending in with the
people. How are we supposed to find them and stop this?”
“Werewolves have a much higher body temperature and vampires are so much colder
than a humans body temp” said Harry “If we used thermal cameras, we could find them”
“So we are going around knocking on peoples doors, asking to take their photo, just so
we can see if they are werewolves or vampires?” asked Ted “That will take too long!”
“Not door knocking, genius!” said Emily “I bet Harry was going to say from surveillance.
If we are up somewhere high, we will be able to look through the cameras and see the
temperature of the people below”
“I was going to say that. Thank you Emily” said Harry “What do we do when we found
one?”
“Follow him or her and stop them from killing anyone. We will do the same if they are
leaving their victim” said Steve “Do we have these cameras?”
“We do” said Harry “They are in the garage. We have more than enough to have them
placed all over the town.”

It began to pour down with rain. Thunder roared. The rain was cool as it ran over Emily‟s
skin. Her clothes were saturated. Below, people held black umbrellas. They walked close
together and very quickly. Emily placed the thermal camera on the ledge of the building
and turned it on. She looked at the computer screen. It was working. She could see the
warmth of the humans below. She turned on the second one, and then got out of the
rain. Luke walked back into the room. He held a radio.
“We will radio in if we see something” he told her. Emily nodded and moved the
screens inside. The lights flickered.
“I really hope the power doesn‟t go out” she said and took off her wet jacket. She sat
down in front of the four computer screens. Two of the screens were thermal, and the
other two were normal. The cameras were control operated, so it was way easier to
follow their suspect. Luke sat down next to her and leaned back in his chair. He put an
arm over the back of her chair.
“Now all we do is wait” he said and wait they did.

They stayed up there, for what seemed like ages. Occasionally, Steve would radio in to
check up the teams around the town. Nothing came for hours. Emily sighed. The sun was
now rising. Something bright red crossed her screen. The radio was in Luke‟s hand.
Page 9
A Cup of Blood

“Steve. We have something. Over” he said. A second passed.

“What is it? Over”
“Werewolf” said Emily to Luke “Going west towards the city center”
“We have a werewolf. Heading west towards the city center” said Luke “Over”
“Follow him. Out” said Steve. Emily was pulling on her jacket and heading for the
ledge. Luke joined her. They held each other‟s hand then stepped off the ledge and fell
with the rain.

They landed softly on the pavement. Some passer-by‟s looked surprised. Emily and Luke
took off at a run towards the city center. The rain began to fall faster. The raindrops
grew bigger. The stood at the fountain and looked around. Luke put the radio to his lips.
“We lost him” he said to all teams.
“Jared here. Go North West. I repeat: Go North West!” Emily and Luke ran up the
road. They headed towards the market square. The rain lessened. Emily looked around.
She shook her head and grabbed the radio.
“Where is he?” she said “Jared. We are south of your position. Where is he?”
“Run! He is going down into the sewers!” said Jared. Emily sighed and she followed
Luke at a sprint. They ran to the end of the row of empty markets. A man-hole was
opened. They looked down.
“Oh boy” said Emily. Luke jumped down the hole. Emily unwillingly followed.

Steve and Harry listened anxiously to the radio. There was no body talking.
“Steve. This is Jared”
“Jared. What is going on? Over”
“Twins have gone down into the sewers. Lost radio contact. Over”
“Keep us posted” he said.
“Roger that. Out” Harry sighed and leaned back in his chair.
“Are you alright?” asked Steve
“Yeah. Just hope hell isn‟t breaking out down there. That‟s all”
“They… will be… fine”
“You don‟t sound so sure”
“I‟m not”

Luke held Emily‟s hand and he held it tight. Their guns were out and loaded. They heard

Page 10
A Cup of Blood

howling and a whole lot of hissing. They turned the corner and saw a door. It was left
open. They walked over to it and snuck through. They crouched on a small platform and
looked down. There were at least twelve werewolves and a whole bunch of vampires.
They were arguing. Emily took out her digital camera and turn off the flash. She
focused in on the quarrel that was occurring below, taking pictures as she went. In the
middle of the room, was a huge cup. A red liquid was being held within it.
“You know, we never wanted to work with you disgusting fools” sneered a male vampire
“It is a waste of our talent! When we kill, there is passion. When you kill, it is all brute
force and savageness”
“Oh, you should talk. What about that three year old you skinned? You call that
passion?” growled a wolf. They continued like this for a while. Luke put his hand on
Emily‟s shoulder. She looked at him.
Let us go he thought we have seen enough. Emily nodded and they crept away. They
climbed out of the sewer and Emily took out her phone. She dialed Steve‟s number.
“Emily, what was down there?” asked Steve when he answered.
“A really big problem” she replied. Luke put the lid back onto the man-hole and he led
his sister back the way they had come.

“Vampires and werewolves working together?” said Ted “You have got to be kidding me!
We are natural enemies”
“We are so not kidding” said Emily “We have pictures to prove it” and she sat passed
the camera to Harry. He plugs it into the computer and brought up the pictures. All six
of them crowded around the computer screen and looked through the photos. Steve
shook his head.
“That is a very big problem” he said.
“I think we need some help” said Harry and he looked up at Steve, who nodded “I‟ll
make the call then” and he picked up the phone and dialed a number.

Harry had called on the Hybrids. There was a group of them that are devoted to help
the Royals whenever they called. The group was called the Silenced. It was made out of
four Hybrids; Selene and Michael were in charge. Alix was the brains and Salvador was
the brawn. They were at the house an hour after the call. Emily never liked Selene and
Michael. They were the most secretive and the most brutal. They definitely had no heat
or soul. They would kill innocent people. Especially children. She could never understand
Page 11
A Cup of Blood

how they could be so black hearted. Steve explained to them what needed to happen. He
also told them the consequences of they were to break them. They agreed, but Steve
was still cautious. They made a plan to go down to the sewers during the day. Vampires
and werewolves are creatures of the night, and they are much stronger. Going during
the day, might be a good thing… well, they all hoped it was.

The doorbell rang. Emily was half way up the steps; she turned around just as Nathaniel
appeared. He opened the door.
“Oh, good day madam. Can I help you?” said Nathaniel.
“Yes. Um… I am from the flower shop, that is just around the corner and I have a
flower delivery for the Princess” said a girl. Nathaniel turned to look at Emily.
“It is for you mistress” he said. Emily walked down the stairs and opened the door
wider. A red haired girl stood there. She was holding a bouquet of black roses. She
handed them to Emily. The girl bowed then left. Emily watched as she did. She was
looking over her shoulder. Soon, she was out of sight. Emily turned to Nathaniel.
“Would you like me to throw them away mistress?” he asked.
“Yes please Nathaniel” she said and she handed them to him. She turned to walk away
when Nathaniel said
“Would you like the note?” Emily turned around. Nathaniel held out an envelope. Emily
took it. She thanked Nathaniel then walked down to the Basement.

Emily handed the envelope to Steve, who opened it and read it aloud for everyone to
hear.
“The vampire/werewolf war is only just beginning.
You will never survive it.
- P”
He sighed and threw it away.
“So he is declaring a war” said Harry.
“And he is hoping to destroy us in the process” said Steve “We need to get moving.
This war needs to stop and it needs to stop now. This will be the shortest war Patrick
will ever see”.

Everything began to move pretty fast. They were all busy. No one -except Harry- was
standing still. Emily was in the Basement. She was sharpening her sword. The was a long,
Page 12
A Cup of Blood

thin blade. Made purely of silver and coated in pure vampire venom. All swords were
coated in it. It helps kill the werewolf. Their bodies cannot handle the venom. It‟s like
acid. It just burns their insides. Alix walked in.
“That is a fine blade” she said.
“It belonged to my mother. When she was my age, her mother made it for her”
“Have you killed with it?”
“No. I have been near death every time there has been a battle. But not this time”
Emily looked up at Alix. She was tall and slim. Her skin had a warm tinge. Her eyes were
a vibrant blue. Her fangs sharp and her nails acted like claws. Her blonde hair was fairly
short.
“Now is as good a time as any” she said and sat crossed legged on the ground with
Emily.
“Yeah”
“What happened to your brother?”
“Which one? I have many”
“Harry”
“Oh, well, he got stabbed. By my psycho boyfriend” said Emily “Well, ex-boyfriend
now”
“Ouch”
“Tell him that. He actually felt it” they were silent for a while. Alix was lost in
thought. Emily looked down at her sword.
Time to go said Luke‟s voice in her head. Emily put her sword in its case and tied it to her
belt, and then she stood up. She helped Alix stand then they both headed to the garage.
“Is Harry seeing anyone?” asked Alix. Emily laughed. Alix smiled “I was just
wondering” and they got into the car.

The market square was empty. It still rained. They glided towards the far side. Steve
led the way. Paul and Ted were behind him, Emily and Luke, the Hybrids and then some
of the royal guards. In all, there were about ten to twenty vampires-slash-Hybrids.
They stood around the man-hole. They took out their guns and loaded them. Salvador
bent down and lifted the lid. He put it to one side and jumped down, followed closely by
Selene, Alix and Michael. The Royals went next, then their guard. Soon, they were all
facing the nasty smell of the sewers. The rain continued to fall. Lightening began its
light show and the thunder shook the earth.
Page 13
A Cup of Blood

Emily and Luke led the way to door. They were the first ones to enter it. When they
looked down, all was quiet and no one was to be seen. They cautiously went down the
metal staircase. Their feet made loud echoes and their eyes were wide. Emily‟s hand
tightened around the black hilt of her sword. They now walked towards the middle of
the room. The giant cup was still there. It came up to Emily‟s chest. They all wrinkled up
their noses.
“Its blood” said Salvador “But it smells and looks… different” Emily stepped up to the
cup and looked in. It wasn‟t just human blood. Vampire and werewolf blood was also
mixed into it. She could see the different colours. The dark red from a vampire and the
dark brown of the werewolf. All mixed in with the bright red from the human race. She
looked away. The smells of all three put together were not making life easy for her nose.
“So where are they all?” asked one of the guards “In the photos, there were so many”
Emily shrugged. Steve lowered his gun. Then, a blood curdling howl broke out. It echoed
of the walls. Barking and hissing followed. Soon, they were surrounded.

Easily they were outnumbered. There were more werewolves than they thought. The
smell soon became unbearable. They all stopped breathing. It only made it a little bit
easier. Emily drew her sword.
“Where are the vampires?” she whispered. She saw Steve shrug. He pulled out his
guns. Emily looked around. She noticed that the vampires weren‟t here for a reason
“We‟re in a flood way” everyone looked up. In the walls or the circular room, were closed
vents. Water was leaking out from them. They were opening. Very, very slowly, as if
they were teasing them all.
“Let‟s get out of here quickly” said Steve and he began to shoot. Emily and Luke
charged forward with their swords. Howls and war cries filled the metal room. Blood
soon covered the floor.

Luke plunged a sword deep into the head of a black werewolf. He pulled it out and
watched as its brains spilled out onto the floor. He ran to go and get another. Emily had
already killed two. She was going in for her third when the vents opened fully. They
were all showered in rain. Soon, the water was up to their ankles and rising quickly. The
wolves immediately began to freak out. They were never confident in water. The
vampires used the water as an advantage. They plunged their swords in through the

Page 14
A Cup of Blood

hearts of the wolves or shot them dead in the head.

“LETS GET OUT OF HERE!” yelled Steve. The roar of the gushing water was
deafening. Emily was on the far side of the room. She looked up to see everyone running
up the metal stair case. Steve looked down. Fear was written on his face. The rest of
their brothers stopped. They too, wore the same expression as Steve. Emily made it to
the center of the room. The current of the water was much too strong for her. She
grabbed hold of the giant cup, but it tipped and the blood spilled into the water, turning
it red. Emily looked up. Her gaze was caught by Luke‟s black eyes. She saw a black shade
fall over her sight.
Jump! Emily, jump! Thought Luke. His face was pleading. Emily took off her jacket. It was
heavy from the water. Luke held out his hands. He was on the platform. Emily took a
deep breath. The water was at her waist. She bent her knees and jumped.

At first she thought she was going to make it, but her hands grabbed hold of Luke‟s.
She hung in mid air. Gripping as hard as she could to Luke‟s hands. Ted and Paul appeared
on either side of Luke. They grabbed her arms and pulled her up. She swung her legs
over the metal bar and stood firmly on the platform. The arms of her brothers were
wrapped around her. They were warm compared to the water. They hurried through the
door. Steve turned around and closed it. Silence. The gushing water could no longer be
heard. The all sighed. Luke held Emily‟s hand.
“Well, looks like that is over” said Ted. Steve shook his head.
“That was only just the beginning. Patrick isn‟t done yet” he said
“We‟ll be ready” said Selene “We will not leave until this war is over” her Hybrids
nodded in agreement. Their eyes were glowing an electric blue as the adrenalin still
pulsed in their veins.
“Can we go?” asked Emily “This place really smells” they all laughed and headed back
up to the surface.

The next day, the sun shone. It was the first day of spring. The town‟s people were no
longer scared as the battle in the sewers flew around. People actually believed that it
was over. Though, some were still cautious and they were right to be. Emily was sitting
on the roof. Her feet dangled off the edge. Below she watched as people laughed and
dance. Flowers covered the road and the hair of little girls. She looked up at the sun and
took in a deep breath of fresh air.

“You seem to like it up here” she turned around and saw Luke walking towards her “If
you aren‟t in the room or the Basement, you are on the roof”
“Is that a problem?”
“No. I don‟t know why I even said that” and he laughed “Beautiful day”
“It is, but good weather does not last long”
“Yeah. Do you suppose tomorrow we are going to face more werewolves?”
“No”
“No? You just said that good things don‟t last long”
“I know, but, I don‟t think we will be having any trouble for a while”
“Why?”
“I just seem to have a good feeling” and she smiled at him. Luke sighed and sat on the
ledge with her. They sat there until the sun went down. Watching as the people enjoyed
a little moment of peace.
