CONTENTS:
This course focuses on WLAN Interworking as specified by 3GPP (ongoing work). Offloading data traffic from 3G to
Wi-Fi is very compelling for operators that want to minimize data costs and make efficient use of the network; WLAN
is widely available and integrated in most mobile devices. The alternative, to use traditional mechanisms to expand 3G
network capacity, is much more expensive and many times limited by frequency availability.
In the course, we discuss IP connectivity using non-3GPP access (WLAN to the EPC). We examine architectures for
Trusted & Non-Trusted WLAN access and Roaming & Non-Roaming scenarios. We discuss Network discovery and
selection using ANDSF, IP-Mobility (CBM & HBM) and Mobility between 3GPP and non-3GPP access. Furthermore
the Policy and Charging Control as well as Authentication (Security) related to usage of non-3GPP access are covered.
