Smart Meter
Segment Definition
Meters can be for commerical, residential, or industrial use. A meter that records a customer's
electricity usage for time intervals of one hour or less, and can transmit that information to the
utility without the need for a human meter reader. Depending on the feature set, the meter
may also notify the utility of a power outage, provide pricing or other information to the
customer, or allow the utility to remotely switch electricity service on or off.

Methodology
Zpryme utilized both secondary and primary research sources to develop these market forecasts. Publicly
available sources, other syndicated market research reports, utility websites, and national Smart Grid
investment plans, goals/targets, and polices were also reviewed.
Utility Interviews and Surveys: In 2012 and 2013, Zpryme interviewed and surveyed over 350 utility
professionals about their Smart Grid sentiment, outlook, expenditures, and technology investment areas. The
data obtained from this research was taken into account to develop these forecasts. This research was
conducted at conferences, online, in-person, and over the phone.
Vendor Interviews and Surveys: In 2012 and 2013, Zpryme interviewed and surveyed over 600 Smart Grid
experts, engineers, consultants, technology vendors and equipment manufactures to assess market
revenues, trends, market size, and growth among various Smart Grid technology areas. The data obtained
from this research was taken into account to develop these forecasts. This research was conducted at
conferences, online, in-person, and over the phone.
