Formula One
Season
THE SHELL REVIEW
Foreword
The 2009 Formula One season has been one filled
with drama, excitement and some fantastic racing.
With a raft of regulation changes coming into force for
the first race in Melbourne, Formula One was set to
change and it did so with dramatic consequences. The
regulations were adapted to increase overtaking and
the interpretation of the rules proved very different from
one car to another. After ‘Liegate’ came ‘Diffusergate’
and the racing didn’t really match up to the off-track
action in the first half of the season. The Shell scientists
continued to work alongside the Scuderia Ferrari
engineers to develop the F60 and it wasn’t until the
Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps that Scuderia
Ferrari could celebrate its first race victory of the season.
With development of the 2009 car suspended and
the focus firmly placed on 2010, the later races in the
season proved to be more and more difficult to gain
points and victories. Felipe Massa’s accident at the
Hungarian Grand Prix shook everyone but the Brazilian
has recovered sufficiently to spend time in an F2007
and is looking forward to making his comeback in
Bahrain next March. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marked
Kimi Räikkönen’s final race with Scuderia Ferrari and
everyone at Shell wishes the ‘Iceman’ the very best
in his future – a truly outstanding racing driver whose
Drivers’ World Championship in 2007 will be fondly
remembered by everyone involved. Double World
Champion, Fernando Alonso will join Scuderia Ferrari
in 2010 to race alongside Felipe Massa, with Giancarlo
Fisichella taking up the reserve driver position.

27-29 MARCH
A tough start to 2009 saw neither
F60 finish the race, but Shell kicked
off the season in traditional style. Felipe
Massa and Kimi Räikkönen’s parade
through the city’s streets to the delight
of hundreds of fans reminded us how
strong the Shell technical partnership
with Ferrari is ‘Down Under’.

MALAYSIAN
Grand Prix
Kuala Lumpur
03-05 APRIL
For the first time in over a decade, torrential
rain caused the abandonment of a Formula
One race. Very often unpredictable, the
Malaysian weather this time lived up to
expectations and caused a red flag on lap
32 of the race. With less than two thirds race
distance covered, half points were awarded
at the end of the allotted race time. Neither
Ferrari driver could capitalise and failed
to score any points.

17-19 APRIL

Shell Helix celebrated the arrival

of the Formula One circus with their
fantastic ‘Inside Ferrari’ event that
involved Scuderia Ferrari driver,
Felipe Massa. Unfortunately the very
wet conditions dampened the chances
of Ferrari success and the team were
left searching for their first points
of the season in Bahrain.

BAHRAIN
Grand Prix
Sakhir
24-26 APRIL

With both Ferrari F60s making the top ten shoot-out for the
first time Kimi Räikkönen managed to score Scuderia Ferrari’s
first points of 2009 with a hard fought sixth place. As the
temperatures reached 60°C on the track, the Shell V-Power
Racing fuel and Shell Helix Ultra motor oil had to work extremely
hard to protect the engine and deliver consistent performance.

SPAIN
Grand Prix
Catalunya
08-10 MAY
The opening European race of the
season welcomed a raft of design
changes from all the teams and
Scuderia Ferrari took advantage
by claiming another three points
at the Circuit de Catalunya. Felipe
Massa’s KERS set him up for a
competitive race among the front
runners right from the start and
having managed to avoid the
incidents during the race, he guided
his F60 back home in sixth place,
notching up three points to his
Drivers’ Championship challenge.

MONACO
Grand Prix
Monte Carlo
22-24 MAY
Monaco, the jewel in Formula One’s crown,
played host to Scuderia Ferrari’s first podium
of the 2009 season, as Kimi Räikkönen
finish the race in third position with team
mate Felipe Massa in fourth. It was Shell and
Scuderia Ferrari’s most positive race of the
season and set the trend for the Prancing
Horse’s strength at low speed, high downforce
circuits throughout the season.

TURKISH
Grand Prix
Istanbul
05- 07 JUNE
Traditionally a very successful
circuit for Scuderia Ferrari’s
Felipe Massa, Turkey proved
more difficult than in previous
seasons in 2009. Whilst Felipe
Massa finished inside the points
for the third race in a row,
Kimi Räikkönen had a tough
weekend and could only finish
in ninth place. Turkey was,
yet again, one of the hottest
venues on the calendar and
the protective properties of
Shell’s premium racing products
maintained Scuderia Ferrari’s
enviable reliability record.

19-21 JUNE Shell celebrated the return of the Formula One circus to Silverstone,
the home of British motor racing, with a special event at Shell Centre
in London. The Brazilian star answered questions from Shell employees
and took part in the pit stop challenge, beating Michael Schumacher’s
record. Back on track, Felipe Massa’s Shell-protected KERS did enough
to give him another race in the points at the ultra high speed circuit at
which Scuderia Ferrari won its first ever race with the support of Shell.

GERMAN
Grand Prix
Nürburgring
10 -12 JULY The scene of Felipe Massa’s first podium of 2009, the German
Grand Prix also provided the venue for Mark Webber’s first
ever Formula One victory since his debut in 2002. Despite
carrying a heavy fuel load, both Scuderia Ferrari drivers
managed to qualify inside the top ten and were fighting with
the front runners until the end of the race. It was disappointing
to see Kimi Räikkönen retire from a promising position, but
Felipe Massa managed to extend his successful run and claim
his first podium of the season.

HUNGARY
Grand Prix
Budapest
24-26 JULY

After a successful Shell Helix Technology Day on the Thursday prior to the Grand Prix, where Shell
invites guests to take a look behind-the-scenes at Shell’s innovation in Formula One. After a tour of
the Shell Trackside Laboratory and the Ferrari motorhome, the racing got underway. Kimi Räikkönen
recorded another podium and his seasons-best finish with second place at the Hungaroring after a
very positive drive. The weekend was overshadowed by Felipe Massa’s accident in qualifying on the
Saturday that has seen him miss the remainder of the season.

EUROPE
Grand Prix
Valencia
21-23 AUGUST
Following Felipe Massa’s accident in Hungary the Formula One world was
brought alive by the possibility of Ferrari legend and Shell global brand
ambassador, Michael Schumacher returning to the track. After some intensive
training he found his neck injury inhibitive and long-time Ferrari test driver,
Luca Badoer stepped in to fill the seat in Felipe Massa’s number three car. Kimi
Räikkönen yet again delivered a strong race, finishing on the podium for the
second successive Grand Prix and added six more valuable points to Scuderia
Ferrari’s Constructors’ challenge.

26 27
BELGIUM
Grand Prix
Spa-Francorchamps
28-30 AUGUST As the Formula One calendar
returned to one of its oldest venues,
Spa-Francorchamps, the only previous
victor on the grid was Kimi Räikkönen.
Despite qualifying in sixth, his extra
KERS power kept his hopes of victory
alive. His blistering start and 80
horsepower advantage saw him power
his way to the front of the pack after the
safety car was deployed. From there
he never looked back and the power
and protection of Shell’s premium
racing products saw him claim his and
the Scuderia’s first victory of the 2009
season. Kimi Räikkönen remains the
‘King of Spa’.

ITALY
Grand Prix
Monza
11-13 SEPTEMBER

Ferrari returned home to the expectant roar of the Tifosi with newly-
signed Giancarlo Fisichella behind the wheel of Felipe Massa’s F60.
Following a week of intensive training and familiarisation with the
F60, especially the steering wheel, the Italian had high hopes for his
home Grand Prix. Racing for Ferrari at Monza was “a dream come
true” for Giancarlo Fisichella but it proved a tough first race, narrowly
missing out on the points with a ninth place finish. Kimi Räikkönen
took the Scuderia’s fifth podium in a row at the famous Autodromo.

30 31
SINGAPORE
Grand Prix
Singapore
25-27 SEPTEMBER
Scuderia Ferrari’s drivers entertained hundreds of fans at the ION Shopping Mall
in the build up to the race by performing a refuelling challenge and talking to
Shell about life in the paddock. Back on the track Kimi Räikkönen and Giancarlo
Fisichella got a clean start and by the first 10 laps both drivers had improved on
their grid positions. At the end of the 61-lap race Kimi finished in 10th position
and Giancarlo was just behind him in 13th.

BRAZIL
For the third season in a row, the Formula One Drivers’
Championship was decided at the impressive Interlagos
circuit. The natural amphitheatre provided the ideal stage
for Jenson Button to take fifth place and claim his first

Grand Prix
Drivers’ title. Kimi Räikkönen took sixth place after being
involved in an early race incident that needed him to come
into the pits and change his nosecone. Giancarlo Fisichella
was also a victim of some early race incidents and as

Sao Paulo
such his chances of a points finish were dashed early on.
Scuderia Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, still recovering from his
injuries, waved the chequered flag at his home circuit –
a great moment of pride for the Brazilian-born driver.

ABU DHABI
Grand Prix
Yas Marina Circuit
30 - 01 NOVEMBER
Motor racing fans held their collective breath for the sport’s first ever day-night race, with many
in the paddock proclaiming the venue as the ‘future of Formula One’. Kimi Räikkönen started the
race from the sixth row of the grid, with Giancarlo Fisichella in 20th place. The Italian made up
places on the drivers around him in the first half of the race, while Kimi Räikkönen found himself
in a battle with fellow Finn Heikki Kovalainen in the early stages. Finishing in 12th and 16th,
both drivers pushed hard all race, but were unable to make up ground on the cars ahead of them.
