the forefront of markets in the photonics industry such as biomedical, UV curing,
Semiconductors, Imaging, Laser, Space & Defence, and Industrial Applications
A few of the high-tech optoelectronic products for which HHV has developed coating

UV Reflectors
Ultraviolet curing is a photochemical process in which highintensity ultraviolet light is used to instantly cure or dry inksor
adhesives. The essential component of a UV curing system is the
UV Reflector which reflects Ultraviolet radiation and transmits
visible& infrared radiation.
The coatings for these reflectors have been designed and developed by HHV with low UV
absorbing materials so as to give the high reflection in the UV region. These reflectors
enable the curing systems to provide the considerable benefits in terms of increased
efficiency as well as increased UV energy and reduced temperature reaching the substrate
during usage. In addition to the cylindrical profiles which provide diffused beams for 3D
curing, HHV also supplies Elliptical UV Reflectors for deep curing. An Optical workshop for
the complete substrates manufacturing of cylindrical and Elliptical reflectors has been
established by HHV for this purpose. These UV coatings are applied on glass as well as on
complex aluminium profiles & Extrusions which are meant for specific curing applications. IR
Blocker coatings developed by HHV, used in-conjunction with UV Reflector coatings
transmits the required UV energy from the light source and eliminates the unwanted heat
energy thus improving the overall curing efficiency.

Fluorescence Filters
Thin film division has worked closely with the community of
molecular and cell biologists to develop the best possible
solutions to applications requiring fluorescence filters. These
filters are very special with a wave length accuracy of 2
nanometres and bandwidth of 10 nanometres.
Fluorescence filters are produced with multiple dielectric layers deposited on a highprecision glass substrate, which is ground and polished to ensure that the highest possible
image quality is maintained. Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD) technology has been used to
produce these filters to reduce water absorption and to enhance durability, stability, and
enhance the transmission of the filter. Each filter layer has been monitored during growth
with the help of an optical monitor to ensure minimal deviation from design specification
thickness, ensuring overall high quality filter performance.

Laser Mirrors
Laser sawing of diamonds revolutionized the diamond-cutting
industry. It enabled the cutting of material in almost limitless
assortment of fancy shapes. Laser Mirrors developed by HHV,
are used inside the laser cavity as high reflection mirrors and
externally as beam steering optics. The increasing optical
output power of industrial lasers requires high-quality mirrors,
which HHV is able to offer.
These Laser Mirrors offered by HHV, deliver an optimum combination of high reflectivity,
superior laser damage resistance and excellent mechanical durability. UV grade fused silica
substrates of flatness /10 are used as the substrates for high reflection mirrors to preserve
wave front quality and maintain stability during the usage.

Cold Mirrors
The lighting environment in an operation theatre should be
such that there is brightness and clarity without causing
needless heating or eye fatigue. The contrast between the
lighted area and the surrounding should not cause stress to
the surgeon's eye.
To enable this, HHV developed Cold mirror technology comprising of 50 layers of
alternative high and low index materials which transmits infrared (IR) light and thus
producing a cool beam of reflected visible light. The coating design has been optimised to
provide the suitable colour rendition so as to make it easy for the surgeon to see the finest
nuances of colour in the tissues. In order to assure the uniform concentrated light, the
reflectors were machined from a flat glass and made into a parabolic shape with a
specifically developed in-house glass bending technique. These hard coated reflectors have
been tested to meet the requirements for environmental and physical durability tests set
forth in specifications such as MIL-C-675C.

Anti-Reflection Coatings
Anti-reflection coating improves the efficiency of the optic by
increasing transmission, enhancing contrast, and eliminating
ghost images. AR coatings offered by HHV are very durable,
with resistance to both physical and environmental damage.
Broad band AR coatings with R<1% (400-900nm) have been developed for the optical
systems which works with broad band light sources. These coating can be applied on lens,
prisms and optical windows. AR coating on optical components for laser components is

designed with suitable dielectric materials to have a low absorption, minimum reflection
loss with high damage threshold. Dual band AR coatings for 532nm and 1064nm are also
developed for the laser usage.

Beam splitter coatings

A beam splitter is the crucial part of most interferometers.
They may serve to divide the beam of white light or
monochromatic light into transmitted and reflected beams
with various ratios, e.g. R:T= 20:80, 30:70, 50:50, 70:30.The
wide variety of beam splitter coatings developed by HHV
include; metallic beam splitters, Dichroic beam splitters, polarising beam splitters, nonpolarising beam splitters, laser line beam splitters and polka-dot beam splitters. Especially,
the polka-dot beam splitter which is deposited on the UVFS substrates has got the unique
speciality of dividing the input beam into two equal halves independent of angle of
incidence.

Infrared Coatings

Imaging an object in infrared will reveal its physical characteristics

and heat signature. Thermal imaging has applications in defence,
industrial security, transportation, cancer detection, body scans
and hot-spot detection.
HHV has developed antireflection coatings on germanium in 8-12
micron region. Germanium windows for the work were in house
fabricated to the standards required for coatings. Antireflection coating on germanium is a
multilayer design with a hard protective oxide top layer. The top layer thickness is carefully
optimized to protect the surface from environmental affects and without much effect on
coating transmission.

Tribological Coatings

Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting

surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and
application of the principles of friction, lubrication and
wear. One of potential application of this technology is the
measurement of film thickness properties of lubricants in
the contact formed between a diameter steel ball and
a rotating glass disk by optical interferometry. This
instrument was developed by PCS instruments-UK and the hard coatings required for this
application were produced by HHV.
The product is an in-house fabricated fine polished glass disc of 10 mm thick and 100 mm
diameter. It is coated firstly with a thin layer of chromium (Cr) followed by a thicker Silica
layer using Magnetron Sputtering technique. The Cr and Silica coating layers have been
optimized for necessary thicknesses with good adhesion, chemical resistance, mechanical,
optical and tribological properties.
