microwave connections

Voice compression technologies enable mobile

operators to slash backhaul bandwidth
requirements on BSC-to-MSC and MSC-to-PSTN
segments, as well as between MSCs. Because
voice traffic between the BTS and the BSC is
already compressed, no further compression is
recommended. However, significant bandwidth
reduction and cost savings can be realized by
optimizing the Abis interface, which carries the
encapsulated traffic in the BTS to BSC segment.

The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 GSM Abis

optimization gateways are standalone devices,
complementing RADs Vmux voice compression
products. The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 optimize
Abis bandwidth utilization, while greater efficiency
in the A interface (BSC to MSC) and the E interface
(MSC to MSC/PSTN) is achieved by the Vmux voice
trunking gateways (see pages 152-154). Together,
the Vmux gateways reduce OpEx and maximize the
amount of traffic that can be supported over links
with limited available bandwidth, thereby enabling
cellular operators to expand their network
infrastructure and introduce new services, without
incurring additional costs.
This is particularly important in remote or rural
areas lacking an extensive terrestrial telecom
infrastructure, where cellular operators backhaul
traffic over expensive satellite links. In addition,
the Vmux Abis optimization gateways can be used
over microwave radio connections. Moreover, due

to the high cost of satellite and microwave

transmission, the Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 offer
quick return on investment.
Deployed in point-to-point and point-tomultipoint topologies, a single Vmux-425 at the
BSC site supports up to six remote Vmux-405
units located at remote BTS sites. Alternatively,
the Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 can work opposite
the Vmux-445 at central locations (See page 83).
Third-party interoperability
The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 also deliver
optimized data, GPRS and dynamic EDGE traffic
over multiple timeslots. They support all GSM
codecs, including FR, EFR, HR, and AMR. As
standard-based devices, they are interoperable
with equipment from major switch vendors,
such as Alcatel, Ericsson, Siemens, Huawei,
Nokia, and Motorola, thereby facilitating
connectivity in a multi-vendor environment.
Clock regeneration over Ethernet uplinks
The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 incorporate
advanced clock recovery capabilities, to enable

accurate synchronization over packet transport.

The reliable regeneration of the TDM-based
clock enables the use of packet switched
networks to backhaul cellular voice traffic.
SNMP management
The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 feature flexible
management capabilities, including local
management via an ASCII terminal (RS-232). In
addition, remote management can be performed
either inband or out-of-band, using the network
or user ports. Advanced FCAPS (Fault,
Configuration, Accounting, Performance,
Security) and diagnostic tools are provided by
RADview-EMS, RADs carrier-class element
management system, via an SNMP-based GUI.
The Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 also support a
variety of configuration access channels,
including CLI over Telnet, SNMP, Web server, and
TFTP. Incorporated security features include
Secure Shell (SSH), Web-based Secure Socket
Layer (SSL), SNMPv3, and RADIUS, as well as
management access control list (ACL).
