Vmux-445

Central-Site GSM Abis Optimization Gateway

Offering up to 3:1 bandwidth optimization,

the Vmux-445 is ideal for deployments in
remote or rural areas, where the lack of
extensive terrestrial infrastructure compels
cellular operators to backhaul traffic over
expensive satellite links.

The Vmux-445 is a compact 3U-high, 19-inch

wide unit that can be mounted in a 19-inch
rack. As a space-saving unit, the Vmux is an
ideal solution for BSC sites. The platform
grooms the traffic of up to 60 E1s over E1,
STM-1 or GbE uplinks, and supports redundant
AC/DC power supply.
SNMP management
The Vmux-445 features flexible management
capabilities, including local management via an
ASCII terminal (RS-232). In addition, remote
management can be performed either inband or
out-of-band, using the network or user ports or
the dedicated management port. Advanced
FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting,
Performance, Security) and diagnostic tools are
provided by RADview-EMS, RADs carrier-class
element management system, via an SNMPbased GUI.

management access control list (ACL).

G ATE WAYS

The Vmux-445 central-site GSM Abis

optimization gateway operates opposite the
Vmux-405 and Vmux-425 to complement RADs
Vmux voice compression products, enabling
cellular operators to lower backhaul costs across
their radio access network (RAN). The
Vmux-405, Vmux-425 and Vmux-445 optimize
the Abis bandwidth utilization, while greater
efficiency in the A interface (BSC to MSC) and
the E interface (MSC to MSC/PSTN) is achieved
by the Vmux voice trunking gateways (see pages
152-154). Together, the Vmux gateways reduce
OpEx while enabling cellular operators to expand
their network infrastructure and introduce new
services without additional costs.

Advanced clock recovery capabilities, enable

accurate synchronization over packet transport,
allowing the use of packet switched networks to
backhaul cellular voice traffic.

Voice compression technologies enable mobile

operators to slash backhaul bandwidth
requirements on BSC-to-MSC and MSC-to-PSTN
segments, as well as between MSCs. Because
voice traffic between the BTS and the BSC is
already compressed, no further compression is
recommended. However, significant bandwidth
reduction and cost savings can be realized by
optimizing the Abis interface, which carries the
encapsulated traffic in the BTS to BSC segment.

Full redundancy

For carrier-class reliability, the Vmux-445 offers

full redundancy for the main module, including
the uplinks and the power supply modules, with
switchover in the event of malfunction.

Data, GPRS, dynamic EDGE supported

The Vmux-445 delivers optimized data, GPRS
and dynamic EDGE over multiple timeslots. It
supports all GSM codecs, including FR, EFR, HR,
and AMR. As a standard-based device, the
Vmux-445 is interoperable with equipment from
major switch vendors, such as Alcatel, Ericsson,
Siemens, Huawei, Nokia, and Motorola, thereby
facilitating connectivity in a multi-vendor
environment.
