The 11th annual Christopher

Schneider Bass Tournament on
Maple Lake was once again a
success Saturday, July 18, with
several trophy worthy bass
reeled in including a 4.34 pound
whopper caught by Jack Kiffe
that won the biggest fish prize.

Wayne Chapman and his son

Paul put together the heaviest
six fish to win the tournament
and the top prize of $400. Combined, their catch weighed 20.58
pounds. The Kiffes, Jack and
his wife Mary, finished second.
Their catch weighed 18.39
pounds. Ryan Holt and Matt
Schneider,
Christophers

brother, were third and the father-son duo of Adam and

Hunter Dalum were fourth. The
top four received cash prizes. All
proceeds from the tournament
are given away in three $500

Zebra mussels
confirmed in
Clearwater
Lake
The Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) will
list three water bodies as infested
with zebra mussels: Clearwater
Lake in Wright and Stearns counties, Ruth Lake in Crow Wing
County, and the Red River bordering northwest Minnesota.
Zebra mussels likely found their
way into these water bodies one
of two ways, either overland or
downstream spread.
Clearwater Lake and Ruth
Lake were infested through overland spread, likely by people
moving aquatic invasive species
(AIS) attached to boats, docks
and other equipment, or water not
drained from watercraft. Overland spread is preventable if Minnesotas AIS laws are followed.
New infestations are usually
discovered in the summer because more people are spending
more time on Minnesota water
bodies. The zebra mussels in
Clearwater and Ruth lakes were
discovered by observant people.
A lake shore resident on Clearwater Lake contacted the DNR
July 6 to report the discovery of
a zebra mussel attached to a native mussel. A man vacationing
on Ruth Lake reported that his
15-year-old son found a zebra
mussel on a rock.
After these reports, DNR biologists investigated and found
more zebra mussels in these
lakes. In Clearwater Lake, eight
zebra mussels were discovered in
two locations approximately 1
mile apart. Further surveys are
underway on Ruth Lake, but one
additional zebra mussel was discovered on a tree branch during
an initial survey.

At its most recent meeting,

Monday, July 13, the Maple
Lake School Board voted
against changing the previouslyset 2015-2016 calendar. As a result of a bill passed during the
legislative special session,
school districts now may start
school on September 1 for the
2015-2016 school year. The district strives to have a calendar
similar to that of the Wright
Tech Center, which will begin
classes September 8. Annandale
has some construction taking
place that allows that district to
start on August 31, and Litchfield previously approved a September 1 start date if allowed
through the special session.
Checking with all the other
member districts of Meeker and
Wright Special Education Cooperative (MAWSECO) and
Wright Tech Center, Redemske
learned that all Big Lake, Buffalo, Dassel-Cokato, Delano,
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted,
Monticello, Rockford and Saint
Michael-Albertville are adhering to the September 8 start date.
Changing to an earlier start date
would allow only one additional
day off during Christmas break
and would release students just
one day earlier at the end of the
school year. It was generally
agreed that sticking with the
original calendar would also
avoid much unnecessary confusion for all.
Regarding other matters on
the evenings agenda, the board:
Once again tabled action on
funding the active promotion of
Independent School District
#881. One of the school boards
goals is to promote the school
district, and a committee has
been formed to look at ways to
market Maple Lake schools. On
the committees invitation, Colin
Sokolowski, who directs marketing for Mounds View School
District, has submitted a proposal to charge $4,000-$6,000
for the production of a strategic

marketing plan and executive

summary. As these expenses
have not been included in the
budget, board approval is required prior to moving forward
with the proposal. Following
some discussion weighing cost
versus benefit and accountability, board members also expressed
discomfort
over
perceptions of an attempt to recruit students from other districts and raised questions as to
the campaigns target audience.
District Superintendent Mark
Redemske said that while open
enrollment brings more students
to the district than it loses,
around 50 students living in the
district attend classes elsewhere.
Board Chair Arnie Michalicek
noted that in a district of Maple
Lakes size, losing or gaining 50
students could make a considerable difference in funding either
way. He requested that the committee clarify its target audience,
and the matter was tabled until
next months meeting.
Approved fall coaching assignments. Head coach for football is Tim Knudsen, assisted by
Andrew Brown and Jamie Leither. Ninth-grade assistant
coaches are Brad Baumann,
Ryan Korolewski and Micky
Goudy. Junior high football
coaches are Adam Ronnenberg,
Aaron Hegle, Steve Kosloski
and Tim Staloch. Head coach for
cross country is Ben Youngs, assisted by J McClelland, with the
junior high coach yet to be determined. Volleyball head coach
is Marty Kiebel, assisted by
Amy Voight and assistant ninthgrade coach Leah Roske. Junior
high volleyball coaches are
Karla Mavencamp, Eric Meyer
and Brittani Schroeder. Steve
Fuchs will supervise the weight
room.
Approved changes to the
2015-2016 high school student
and activities handbooks. Updates include a change to the
policy unexcused absences.

3 of a Kind Bike Run to benefit veterans

by Tyler Jacobson
Correspondent

Over 90 bikers took part in the

third annual 3 of a Kind Bike
Run Benefit on Saturday, June
18th. Members of the Maple
Lake Fire Department escorted
bikers from the Clearwater Legion Club on a ride that took
them through Maple Lake, a ride
which culminated with a
spaghetti dinner, an auction and
live music, with proceeds going
to help improve the lives of war
veterans.
3 of a Kind began as a memorial for three men: Jeff Colbenson, of Maple Lake, and Brett
Johnson, of Becker, who were
killed in a plane crash in 2010,
and Matt Steffens, from Monticello, killed in a motorcycle
crash two years earlier. The
event quickly grew, from some
30 bikers the first year to upwards of 100 (and even more) in
succeeding years.
Now in its third year, 3 of a
Kind continues to honor the
memories of Colbenson, Johnson
and Steffens by making a difference in the lives of others. Some
of the proceeds from this years
event went to help active female
military personnel; and much of
the proceeds went to helping
fund the Eagles Healing Nest, a
non-profit recovery center for
war veterans in Sauk Rapids.
Eagles Healing Nest offers a
safe space for veterans to treat
what 3 of a Kind co-organizer

Shawn Thomas refers to as invisible wounds the psychological scars war leaves behind.
Theres a lot of people who
need help, says Thomas.
At this years event, Thomas
was also able to announce that
his father, former Maple Lake
High School band teacher Joe
Thomas, would begin volunteering his time offering instrumental
lessons once a month at the Eagles Nest in a newly-renovated
building christened, appropriately enough, Songs of
Heaven.

The event is
sponsored both by
local businesses,
and by the kind
donations of local
citizens, many of
who give anonymously. Its one of

The ride left Clearwater Corners and the first stop was American Legion Post #131 in Maple Lake, from there they
rode to the Legion Club in Howard Lake, LaLa's in South Haven and to the Legion Club in Clearwater where the riders
enjoyed a spaghetti dinner, silent and live auctions and enjoyed the music of Outside Recess.

Brutes
Bleat
by Harold Brutlag
There is a lot of
color in Ney Park
this time of the year
with an abundance
of brown-eyed susans, clover and a
host of other wild
flowers. They add
color to the open
prairie area in the
eastern portion of
the park where
Vanna likes to run.
The blossoms are
attracting honey
bees and Im seeing
some Monarch butterflies on our
walks. So far the
deer flies, horse
flies and wood ticks
havent been a
problem, but that could change any day. I wore my bug hat one day,
but could have gotten along without it. While the photo of a Wild
Parsnip (above) may add color to the park, its not one you want to
mess with. The internet says this about the plant: Wild Parsnip
(Pastinaca sativa) is a tall (six inches four feet) perennial herbaceous plant. It spends the first year as a small rosette (six inches
tall) and can grow up to four feet in its flowering stage. Wild parsnip
has broad, flat-topped yellow flowers which bloom throughout the
summer months.
This plant is native to Europe and Asia. Because the roots are ed-

Ask a
Trooper
by Sgt. Neil Dickenson
Question: Can a person get
a ticket for driving too slow?
Answer: Yes. Freeways in
Minnesota have an actual
posted minimum speed limit. A
driver must use due care in operating a vehicle, so there are
times when traveling under that
limit would be legal and encouraged because of weather
conditions (snow, ice, fog, etc.)
and actual or potential hazards

on the highway.
Here is what Minnesota
State Statute 169.15 says about
impeding traffic: No person
shall drive a motor vehicle at
such a slow speed as to impede
or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except
when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in
compliance with law or except

ible, it was brought to the United States and planted as a food

source. It escaped cultivation and is now a wide-spread invasive
plant across the United States. The MNDNR has this warning on
their website: Avoid skin contact with the toxic sap of the plant
tissue by wearing gloves, long sleeves and long pants. The juice of
wild parsnip in contact with skin in the presence of sunlight can
cause a rash and blistering and discoloration of the skin (phytophotodermatitis).
A Wright County Park employee was spraying for wild parsnip
in the park last week and commented there is a lot of it in the older
portion of the park. . . It sounds like it is going to continue to
be a problem throughout Minnesota.

There was a hen turkey with about 5-6 poults on the township
road next to Jerry Carlsons residence last Wednesday. The chicks
were small and only about a week old, scurrying behind the hen
which couldnt decide which way to go before deciding the park
was a better place. A hen and covey of pheasants flushed in the park
Saturday and the chicks were nearly as large as the hen. A pair of
well-matched black riding horses prompted me to ask the owners
if they were related Sunday morning. No, one was a quarter horse
and the other a Morgan, they commented as they praised the county
for providing a great trail riding area.
.
.
I visited with
Brian Hedman Sunday at the Lakers-Delano baseball game and he
commented he saw two bucks with huge horns, a pheasant hen and
about 10 chicks that morning as well as a doe and two fawns on the
road near his home on County Road 5. The Lakers nailed down first
place in the North Star League with a 9-7 win. The game was tied
7-7 when third baseman Bert Marsnik slammed out a two-run
homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Riley Decker, relieving
starting pitcher Mitch Wurm, got the win. . . Chad Raiches
grand slam last Wednesday won the Dassel-Cokato game 13-3 last
Wednesday (7 innings), and with the bases loaded and one out in
Friday nights game with Hutchinson he was hit by the pitcher to
give the Lakers an 8-7 win.

I havent been out on the lakes much for a week or so, but a trip

unable to maintain a greater

speed due to a combination of
the weight of the vehicle and
the grade of the highway.
I look at it as how a normal
and reasonable person would
travel on a road. If a motorist is
unable to maintain a safe speed
when its a clear, sunny day and
roads are in good condition, I
would look for a reason beyond
the violation, including:
Impairment from alcohol or
drugs, even prescription medications
General physical/health
problems
Diabetic loss of consciousness or seizures
Vision problems

County remains on budget at years midway point

Throughout the year, the

Wright County Board of Commissioners is presented with the
progress of the countys revenue/expenditure guidelines. At
the July 14 meeting, the board
approved the revenue/expenditure guidelines for June, which,
according to Auditor/Treasurer
Bob Hiivala is an important
time.
We always monitor the
guidelines to see where we sit
with both revenues and expenditures, but the June report is
valuable because it represents
half of the budget year, Hiivala
said. This month is when we
start working on department
budgets for 2016 and the midyear report is valuable because
we break down every line item
in each budget to get an accurate
reflection of where those line
items stand in relation to what
was projected.
At the mid-way point of the
year, both the countys revenues
and expenditures remain very
close to the budgeted amounts
revenues sitting at 49 percent of
the mid-year projections and expenditures sitting at 47 percent.
With all the variations that
can take place in costs and expenses, at times, it seems like
making annual budget projec-

tions can be like reading tea

leaves, but Hiivala said history
and experience dealing with the
fluctuations of costs and usage
are critical to keeping budgets
on target.
There are always going to
be little things that crop up that
werent anticipated, Hiivala
said. But department heads are
aware that their budgets are set
and that if there is a variance in
one area, it needs to be made up
in others. Fortunately, a lot of
the budget is devoted to paying
personnel costs and those figures are known when the budget
process begins.
This month department
heads will be asked to construct
their 2016 budget proposals and
will use the mid-year revenue
expenditure guidelines as the
template for determining projected line item figures for
2016. The county board will
spend much of August reviewing budgets and Hiivala believes
the same process will be undertaken then that has been done in
recent years.
Weve done a good job at
being able to set budgets that we
can consistently hit or stay
under, Hiivala said. It takes a
lot of people working together
from the county board to administration to my office to department heads. It isnt just luck that

keeps our budgets consistent

and close to what we projected
they would be. Its a lot of people working together to make
sure that the budgets will meet
the needs of the departments
and can be maintained to end up
close to what was expected.
Later this month, the county
board will set its budget committee of the whole meeting,
which is expected to be held
throughout the month of August.
In other items on the July 14
agenda, the board:
* Approved a zoning amendment concerning adding solar
energy farms and solar energy
systems to all zoning districts
except residential and shoreland
districts.
* Awarded the 2015 street
lighting safety projects for
2015. The contract was awarded
to Design Electrical Contractors
Inc. in the amount of $143,457.
The project is 90 percent federally funded and requires a local
match of $14,346.
* Approved the second set of
bid packages for the construction of the highway department
building, as well as giving
Highway Engineer Virgil
Hawkins authority to approve or
deny change orders to the project.
* Authorized signatures on a

union contract with Teamsters

Local 320, which represents the
non-licensed sheriffs staff, for
2015-16.
* Approved a maintenance
agreement with Hennepin
County for two shared roads
CSAH 17 and County Rd. 139.
* Authorized relocation of
the law library to the former assessors office space and coordinate the move with the
Information Technology and
building maintenance staff.
* Referred to the personnel
committee proposed revisions to
the countys personnel policy.
The proposed changes will deal
with language dealing with position classification and reclassification.
* Authorized a request to
proceed with a repair/clean-out
of County Ditch 31. Residents
along the ditch requested that
the county, which serves as the
ditch authority, clean out areas
of the ditch that have fallen into
disrepair in recent years.
* Referred to the July 22
technology committee meeting
discussion of the technology
committee charter, guidelines
for project evaluation and an information security assessment.
* Authorized obtaining
quotes for remodeling the former sheriffs dispatch center
into a new training center.

River, has been infested with

zebra mussels since 2012. Zebra
mussels likely colonized the Red
River by floating downstream
during their early life stage when
they are small and are carried by
currents before they attach to
hard objects.
Even though these are only
the fourth and fifth inland lake
infestations confirmed this year
(after Eunice, Fish Trap, and
Forest lakes), these reports are
alarming. It is imperative that
people take action and follow
state AIS laws. Boaters are re-

quired by law to clean weeds

and debris from their boats,
drain water from their boats,
bilges, and live wells, and dispose of unwanted bait in the
trash. Anyone moving a dock or
lift from one water body to another must leave the equipment
out of the water for 21 days before placing it in the new water
body.
The vast majority of Minnesota lakes, about 95 percent,
are not infested by any aquatic
invasive species. Likewise, the
vast majority of people using

Minnesota lakes follow these

laws and are aware of the need
to prevent the spread of AIS. As
more Minnesota lakes become
infested, even a small percentage of people not following the
laws can result in further overland spread of these species.
More information about
zebra mussels, how to inspect
boats and other water-related
equipment, a current list of infested waters, and how to report
an infestation is available on the
DNR
website
at
www.mndnr.gov/ais.

Zebra Mussels
continued from page 1
Zebra mussels can also move
to new waterways through
downstream flow. The Red
River infestation illustrates this
type of AIS spread. In June, researchers in North Dakota found
many larval zebra mussels,
called veligers, at six sites on the
Red River. On July 9, Fargo city
staff found an adult zebra mussel
attached to a water intake on the
river.
The infestation of the Red
River is not surprising because

Clowns around town

by Lynda Zimmerman
Correspondent

Perhaps youve enjoyed their

antics at a parade in Annandale,
Buffalo, Eden Valley or Monticello. Maybe you laughed at
them as they collaborated with
the Irish Washer Women in
Maple Lakes St. Patricks Day
Celebration. Possibly they have
entertained your children or
brightened the day of a relative
living in a nursing home. They
are the Clown Arounds, and they
have been in the funny business since August 9, 2006, when
eight adults and two children
held the first meeting of the club.
Charter member and first president of the organization, Maple
Lake businessman, Darrell
Jensen, had been encouraged to
attend the Mooseburger Clown
Arts Camp by Tricia Manuel.
He enjoyed the experience so
much that six weeks later he decided to start a clown club.
Manuel agreed to be the clubs
education supervisor/mentor,
and Marie Mavencamp agreed
to be the groups historian.
The mission statement created that night continues to
guide the group that has grown
to more than 30 members ages 9
to 79. The Clown Arounds welcome clowns of all ages from all
areas and all walks of life to a relaxed, fun and friendly atmosphere for performing the tricks
of our trade and education of
newcomers, hobbyists, and seasoned professionals alike in the
art of promoting joy for everyone with laughter and fun for all.
Members come from at least 11
area communities, and there are
a few more women than men.
Jensen said about 80% of the
members had clowning experience before joining and some of
the members make their living
as clowns. He called the new
clowns, First of Mays which is
clown lingo for beginners. The
club meets on the first Wednes-

day of every month with a short

business session followed by education and practicing new skits.
Anyone interested in clowning
is welcome. More information is
available
at
http://facebook.com/The ClownArounds.
Members have a clown name
and the three charter members
still active in the group include
Buddy (Darrell Jensen), Pricilla
Mooseburger (Tricia Manuel),
and Campie (Marie Mavencamp). Newer members have included Boof, Silly Sally, Dotz,
Jinx, Walleye, Chuckles, Cheerio and Moe-Dum. According to
Jensen, everyone truly enjoys
clowning, and Mavencamp
adds, we love to have a lot of
fun. Jensen commented that
many of the First of Mays are
concerned about stage fright but
soon realize it is not a problem.
Clowning brings out a make
believe person inside you, so
your alter ego is the performer.
There are no membership
dues for the club and members
pay for their own costumes,
props and transportation costs.

The club does not have set fees
for performing at events but
gladly accepts donations in the
same range that similar performance groups would charge. All
donations are used to replenish
supplies, obtain equipment for
the club and for continuing
clown education. A new sound
system and a portable curtain
were recently acquired for use
by the group.
From June through May, the
Clown Arounds reserve the third
Thursday of each month for a
traveling show. They visit an

area nursing home or senior center and present an hour-long

show. According to their promotional information, the Clown
Arounds love to do skits, jokes,
ballooning, magic, face painting
and kazoo bands, spreading joy
around the town. They clown at
parades,
parties,
schools,
churches, county fairs and more.
They are always open for an invitation and a new adventure.
Contact them at TheClownArounds@gmail.com for more
information and to arrange a performance.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into
nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must
fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier
it gets to solve the puzzle!

Summer Storytime with Marie celebrates birthdays

Happy Birthday to Me
was the song of the morning at
Maries Library Storytime on
Thursday, July 14, at the
McHugh building. Twenty-six
children and 13 adults celebrated everyones birthday by
listening to birthday stories,
singing Happy Birthday to
each child, and learning silly
new birthday songs. Children
stood up with all the children
sharing the same age, starting
with one and going up to six,
and pretending to blow out their
own candles. Then everyone
made their own birthday crown
and enjoyed birthday cupcakes.
Marie received a special surprise when Lisa, Boone and the
children from the Books with
Boone class came down to sing
Happy Birthday to her, too.
Library storytime is held
every Tuesday this summer
through August 18, at the
McHugh building (next to the
bakery) from 9:30 10:30 a.m.
for children ages 2 6. There is
no registration required, but
children must be accompanied
by an adult.

These children attended the Happy Birthday storytime: Isabelle and Gunnar Melgaard, Ryder Dettwiler, Mason Thomas, Hazel Jacobson, Charlie
and Lauren Peterson, Tessa Dahl, Elijah Dorse, Clark and Oliver Hawkinson, Payton, Lucas and Noah Schwindel, Ellie Ogram, Izaak Fieldseth,
Alexandra, Jackson and Evalyn Krauze, Maci Geyen, Sophia and Alexander Norberg, Aubrey and Clifton Jude, Rachel and Howie Rasset.

Books with Boone scavenger hunt

Greyhound Boone let a feline friend take the lead this
week, as the Books with Boone
group read Dewey Theres a
Cat in the Library! The readers then learned about the library in a scavenger hunt, with
clues taken from the story, after
which they worked on their
weekly journals, word searches,
read to Boone and found new
books for this weeks Read and
Redeem program.
Top Right: Allie Ertel
reads the next clue to the
Library scavenger hunt
while Hans Peterson,
Carter Ertel, Lisa and
Boone and Larson Melgaard listen. The Library
wants to thank the Costume Shoppe for the last
minute loan of this prop in
the scavenger hunt.
Bottom Right: Just as
Dewey the cat was delivered in the dropbox, Carter
Ertel, Lisa and Boone,
Danica Hageman, Kenyon
Kingsbury, Ben Ogram,
Larson Melgaard, Allie

If five or more excused absences for illness occur per

monthly review or 12 excused
absences for illness within a
school year occur, a letter will
be sent providing notification
that attendance is being monitored. After 15 absences for illness in a school year, a doctors
note or a medical excuse monitoring form may be required for
the remainder of the school
year. Failure to provide a requested note will result in the
absence being marked unexcused. Consequences of unexcused absences have also been
updated. The third time a student receives an unexcused absence from school, he or she
will attend wRight Choice for
three full days and a referral letter will be sent to Wright
County Human Services. This
letter is required by state statute,
and truancy social workers will
determine an appropriate plan of
action. Attendance policies have
been updated to state that on
days Maple Lake High Achool
has classes and Wright Technical Center does not, students
who are not in good standing academically or behaviorally will
be required to stay at MLHS
during normal WTC time. Activities policies have been updated to state that inappropriate
behavior, whether on-campus or
off, may result in a violation of
Minnesota State High School
League rules which could affect
eligibility for sports and other
activities. These behaviors
could include but are not limited
to illegal activity or inappropriate use of social media and texting. In addition, the district will
no longer offer individual student insurance for families to
purchase. Lunch prices will be
$2.35 for elementary students,
$2.55 for high school students
and $3.55 for adults. Extra milk
may be purchased for $.45 per
carton. Breakfast will be available for $1.50. Students who
qualify for free or reduced
meals will still receive breakfast
and lunch at no charge. Parentteacher fall conferences have
been scheduled for Monday,
October 19, and spring conferences will be Monday, February
22, 2016.
Approved increasing the
family maximum for activity
fees from $400 to $450. Ticket
prices and all other activity fees

remain the same as last year.

Delegated Redemske, Financial Manager Kristi Anderson and Human Resources
Manager Maureen Donohue
control of the contents of the
districts safe deposit box as
well as the authority to make
fund transfers for investment of
excess money and approved a
resolution authorizing Anderson

from the petty cash and activity
funds during the 2016 fiscal
year. In addition, Redemske and
Donohue were delegated to sign
employee/employment documents. The board also delegated
Redemske, Anderson and Principal David Hansen to make
transactions through the savings
account for the Scholarship
Fund. These are items the board
approves each year giving administration and district office
personnel authority to make
day-to-day decisions on the
school districts behalf.
Set the districts Truth in
Taxation hearing for 8 p.m. December 14.

Lakers win against Dassel-Cokato, Hutchinson and Delano

By Matt Brown
Sports Writer

The Maple Lake Lakers won

all three of their games last
week to move to 18-1 and
clinch the North Star League
regular season with three games
left to play. Each game was exciting and showed that the Lakers can manage to come back
from deficits and win games
that matter. Looking to the
playoff picture, Howard Lake
got a big boost from the Laker
victories over Hutchinson
Huskies and Delano Athletics
and moved into second place in
the NSL at 14-5.

Maple Lake hosted the DC
Saints Wednesday night in a
game that was fun to watch despite the final score. The Saints
got the jump on starter Todd
Fuller, posting a run in the top
of the first. The Lakers fired
back with two men reaching on
errors, setting up RBI singles
for Bert Marsnik and Chad
Raiche. DC eventually answered in the fourth, putting up
two to reclaim the lead. Luke
Fobbe led off the fifth with a
single and got the Lakers
started on a four-run rally that
included an RBI double by

Dusty Decker. The sixth inning

almost took the wind out of the
Lakers sails as the first two
batters were retired before
Marsnik reached on an error.
That prompted a three-run rally
with two outs to put Maple
Lake up 9-3. The Saints looked
to their bullpen to stop the
bleeding, but to no avail. With
the bases loaded and one out in
the seventh, Raiche ended the
game with a towering walk-off
grand slam. This was the third
game in a row Maple Lake has
hit a walk-off home run at home
against the Saints. Fuller went
six innings for the win, giving
up four hits and six walks while
collecting six strikeouts.

see-saw battle for the regularseason championship. The

Huskies started early, scoring a
run in the first against starter Jeremy Schmidt to take an early
lead. The Laker offense started
slow, eventually scoring two in
the fifth to tie the game. That is
when the battle began.
Hutchinson put up two in the
sixth and seventh, giving them
a 6-3 lead going into the bottom
of the seventh. The 9 p.m. siren
went off and it woke the Lakers
up, driving in four runs to take
a 7-6 lead into the eighth. The
Huskies tied the game in the
eighth, which would be the last
inning for Schmidt. Mitch
Wurm shut down Hutchinson in
the ninth, setting up an opportunity to win it with one in the
ninth. That opportunity came in
the form of Dusty Decker up
with men on second and third.
After getting down on the count
they decided to intentionally
walk Decker to load the bases
for Raiche. Seizing his chance
for a second walk-off in a row,
Raiche used all his strength to
brace for impact as he was hit
by the pitch to end the game.
Schmidt gave up nine hits and
no walks while striking out 14.
Hit of the night goes to
Marsnik, who hit a hard-line
shot and, in a feat many thought
impossible, showed the foot
speed to beat out a triple.

Maple Lake 9
The Delano Athletics came
to Maple Lake Sunday looking
to upset the home team and
jump ahead in the NSL standings. Things did not go as
planned for the visitors. Both
teams came out of the gate
swinging, with the Lakers up 63 after only two innings. Mitch
Wurm got the start despite his
closing appearance on Friday.
Wurm gave up his first home
run of the year in the fourth but
Dusty Decker picked him up,

driving in a run to keep the

three-run lead. A three-run
double in the sixth brought a
pitching change in the seventh
with Riley Decker taking the
mound and the game tied at
seven. Bert Marsnik didnt need
speed to round the bases in the
eighth when he blasted a tworun homer to take the lead. The
lead held in the ninth as the
Lakers clinched the regular-season title and the first seed in the
NSL tournament. R. Decker got
his second win of the year.
Though official stats are not
available, Dusty Decker had a
huge day at the plate, driving in
four RBIs in the first four innings alone.
The Lakers close out their
North Star League schedule this
week by hosting Maple Plain on

Wednesday at 7:30, Loretto on

Friday at 7:30, and Mound on
Sunday at 2:00. All three teams
are in the middle of the pack in
the NSL and will certainly look
for an upset to boost their standings.

The Catch
by Jeff Plattner
NFL Bold Predictions:
15 for 15
1. Regardless of whether or
not Tom Brady receives a suspension for his alleged involvement in Deflate Gate, for the
first time since 2002, the Patriots will finish a season with less
than 10 wins.
2. Miami will regret paying
Ndamukong Suh $114 million
(over 6 years) as they fail to not
only make the playoffs, but also
post a winning record for the
seventh straight season.
3. Shockingly, only one, yes
just one NFL head coach will be
shown the door, following the
2015 season. Who will it be?
Miamis Joe Philbin.
4. The Buffalo Bills will not
only make the playoffs for the

first time since 1999, but also

win their first playoff game
since 1995. You may remember
their last playoff loss as The
Music City Miracle. This time
theyll win with a miraculous
ending.
5. One historic record held
by a former Los Angeles Ram
will be broken in 2015. It will
not be Eric Dickersons 2,105
rushing yards in a single season. It will be Willie Flipper
Andersons 336 receiving yards
in a single game. T.Y. Hilton of
the Colts will break the record.
6. Just a few short years ago,
Ray Rice and Josh Gordon were
among the brightest young stars
in the game. Because of their
off-field issues, neither will
ever play another down in the

NFL.
7. For the third time in his
career, Adrian Peterson will
lead the league in rushing
yards. On his way there, hell
also rush for his 100th career
TD (he needs 14) and record a
career high in receptions (he
needs 44).
8. With both teams finishing
10-6, the Vikings will win a
tiebreaker against the Packers
to win the NFC North. They
will win the tie-breaker thanks
to their first win at Lambeau
Field since 2009.
9. Bears new Head Coach,
John Fox, will not be as patient
as others have been and
Chicago will finally throw in
the towel on Jay Cutler.
10. The Cowboys will not
miss DeMarco Murray, as
Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden will combine to rush for
more than the 1,845 yards Murray posted last season.
11. After five miserable seasons in St. Louis, Eagles QB

Sam Bradford will resurrect his

career in Philadelphia, with a
Pro Bowl season and playoff
appearance.
12. The NFL Offensive
Rookie of the Year will not be
Melvin Gordon, Amari Cooper,
or Todd Gurley. Instead, it will
be Eagles WR Nelson Agholor.
13. After selecting RGIII
with the second overall pick in
the 2012 NFL Draft just a few
short seasons ago, the Redskins
will finish dead last in the
league and will again be looking for a franchise QB, this time
in the 2016 NFL Draft.
14. The Saints will be just
fine without TE Jimmy Graham, finishing 11-5. In his absence, WR Brandin Cooks and
RB C.J. Spiller will combine
for 150 receptions and 12 TDs.
15. By Week 4, everyone
will have forgotten about the
rule change that has extra points
being kicked from the 15 yard
line now, instead of from the 2
yard line.

Friday nights storm meant lights out

for some Maple Lake residents
by Brenda Erdahl
Correspondent

Thirty-eight houses were reportedly out of power until late

in the afternoon Saturday, July
18, after a storm swept through
Maple Lake Friday night, July
17. This branch from a willow
tree snapped off in the high
winds and fell on these power
lines that snapped the top of the
pole off on Sunset Street East in
Maple Lake. According to resident Jayne Spaeth, the neighborhood was out of power from just
before midnight until after 4
p.m. the next day. Xcel Energy
was still working on restoring
power at 3:45 p.m. Saturday,
and were at that time hoping to
have it back on within the hour,
Spaeth said.

DNR offers advice for dealing with storm damaged trees

Watch for detached branches,
loosely hanging branches and
split or cracked trunks that can
cause injury or further damage.
Use proper pruning techniques by cutting just outside
the branch collar, but limit pruning to making the tree safe. Too
much pruning can damage an already stressed tree.
Water stressed and damaged
trees weekly to help them repair
and rebuild. Be careful not to
over-water, especially in heavy
clay soils.
Monitor damaged trees in
upcoming years to make sure
they dont become a hazard.
Dont:
Dont be rushed by promises
of bargains from inexperienced
or unqualified tree service
providers. Improper pruning or

Clean-up following a windstorm can be an overwhelming

task for homeowners. Knowing
which trees to save and which to
remove can impact safety and
the survival of remaining trees,
according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Forest health specialist Brian
Schwingle offers the following
tips.
Do:
Carefully inspect standing
trees for damage and deal with
hazardous trees first. If possible,
ask a forester or arborist for advice.
Trees should be removed if
more than 50 percent of the
trunk or live branches in the tree
crown are damaged, or if the
tree is leaning and roots are
damaged.

unneeded removal can result in

unnecessary costs or loss of
healthy trees.
Dont repair a broken branch
or fork of a tree with tape, wire,
bolts or other wraps. It will not
heal, and the split will invite
decay and further weaken the
tree. Cabling or bracing should
only be performed by a certified
arborist and inspected annually.
Dont remove the tops of
trees. This makes the tree more
susceptible to insects and disease, and results in new
branches that are weakly attached.
Dont apply paint or dressing
to wounds as these materials interfere with the natural wound
sealing process.
Dont remove small, leaning
trees. Trees less than 15 feet tall

may survive if they are gently
