THE WORD OF GOD

Welcome the participants and introduce yourself.

Give out the Gen-F booklets; let them write
their names. As unfreezer, start with a game, if
needed. If not,
proceed to teach the song
Walking in the Spirit with gestures. If there
is time, let them introduce themselves (at least
name or nickname). Orient them regarding the
schedule (especially snacks and lunch, end of
recollection) and the venue. Draw out some of
their expectations and contributions.
Draw out some of their expectations and contributions.
What is recollection?

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans.

(6:12-14)
Do not let sin rule your mortal body and make you obey its
lusts. No more shall you offer the members of your body to sin
as weapons for evil. Rather, offer
yourselves to God as men
and women who have come back from the dead to life, and your
bodies to God as weapons for justice. Sin will no longer have
power over you. You are now under Gods grace.
The word of God tells me that because of sin,
I am like a slave, unfree but because of
Gods grace, I am a free human person! As a
believer of Gods word, I would like to
become truly and genuinely free.
This is my personal definition of freedom.

What do you expect to get out of this

recollection? What are you willing to give or to
contribute?
Process and summarize. Explain what a recollection is.
Recollection:
a time of renewal, renewing our love for God, for
others, for ourselves. For us, juniors, a deeper
experience of freedom. Hence, the title Gen-F,
for Generation-Freedom.

Reflections on the Experience

Bottle Experience
1. How did you feel when you were on Mount Apo? Was there a
time in life when you had a similar feeling? Why? What
happened?

The need for silence, reflection, prayer (that is what to

recollect means. But also group activities, sharing
and singing. Silence means putting aside a lot of
things: loud sounds, worries about family,
studies,
friends, storytelling, etc.

2. How did you feel while you were inside the bottle? Was there
a time in your life when you had a similar feeling? Why?
What happened?

Others
2.1 Activity: Kuwentuhan
Divide the class roughly into two sides. From each
side, ask four
volunteers to act the parts of
Reporter. Cannot see (Bulag), Cannot speak (Pipi),
Cannot hear (Bingi). Invite the eight volunteers to
wait outside the room, while you explain to the class
the contest: which group can pass as faithfully as
possible.
Remind the rest of the class to cheer or
encourage moderately, refrain from coaching, and
follow the story.
Call in the Reporter of one group, and give him/her a
copy of the Maikling Kuwento. Call in Cannot see.
The Reporter reads the story to Cannot see. Call in

4.2. Sacrament of Confession

Ang Maikling Kuwento

Isang araw, may isang batang babaeng naglalakad sa
daan.

If there is a priest, encourage and guide the participants

to prepare themselves for a good confession. When time permits,
go slowly through the Examine of Conscience. Read it aloud. Help
them look more deeply into themselves.

4.3. Concluding Eucharist

Suggested themes: Free to Love God and Others, In Gods
love, we are free, The Holy Spirit sets us free.

Suggested liturgies: Mass of the Holy Spirit, Mass for

Persecuted Christians, Mass of Justice and Peace.

After the Homily, or after receiving communion, invite the class

to read in silence their letter to the Lord. If possible, you
may ask two or three students to read their letters aloud.

Rules for good-decision making

Why is it important?

1.Listen to your feelings. They tell you a lot of things about

your self and others. Be aware of them. Accept them; do
not run away from them. But do not act or decide at once.

2.Go beyond your feelings. Listen to God speaking to you through

your conscience. This need reflection and silence. It is
also helpful to write down your thoughts.

3.Allow your conscience to be guided by the important principles

and
values that you have learned. Deep down inside you,
you know when
something is right and when something is
wrong.

4. In difficulty, talk with someone- a good friend, parents,

sisters, teachers, priests.

5. Pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit before making your
final decision.

4. Conclusion

4.1. Activity : My Gift To The Lord

Communication is important in bringing us

another. When there is good communication,
understand each other. There is a link, a
us. And so, friendships and relationships
becomes more meaningful and enjoyable.
What do we need?

In communication, two persons speak and

listen to one
another. Good communication happens when both are ready
and willing to open up, express themselves, and share with
others. Take this example. Juan meets a girl. He speaks,
and
uses the mouth to say the words. He wants to make
friends and so he asks: ano ang pangalan mo? the girl
listens, using the ears. She hears the words and in her
mind, she begins to think: this boy is so impolite. He
wants to hurt me that is why he is asking my name. The
words have a different meaning for her. Deep in the heart
of the boy, there is a real desire to make friends. In
stead, in the heart of the girl, there is fear,
insecurity, mistrust. And so she gets upset and angry.
What happened?

Communication takes place on three levels.

Direct the students to worksheets no.5

We would like to thank the Lord for the Gift of Freedom. We will
write him a letter, as My gift to the Lord. Take time to
think, reflect, pray and write. This is your gift, to bring
and read out to him during the concluding Eucharist.

14

closer to one
we are able to
bridge between
develop. Life

Level 1: words
Speaker

Level 2: meaning
Level 3: person

In our example: Juan said the words, and the girl heard
them. Level 1, OK. Juans words carried a meaning,
a message of
friendship. The girl understood them
as impolite. Level 2, not OK. Juan was a friendly
person, but the girl, maybe because of her past
experiences, she was not ready to make friends. Level
3, not OK. Therefore poor communication.
There

are many obstacles to good communication. Our

activity showed obstacles on levels 1 and 2; we could
not use the proper words, and meanings got mixed-up.
But there are deeper obstacles on level 3, that is,
within
the
person
themselves.
These
are
more
difficult.

For good communication to take place, we must be ready,

willing and able to share and exchange our words, our
intended meanings, and our very persons or selves. In
our hearts (level 3), we must learn to become open
and trusting, happy to meet friends. In summary. In
order to communicate, we must be able, ready and
willing to express ourselves.
2.3. Activity: Express Yourself
Direct the class to worksheet no.1.
Use the first letter of your name, and think of five
(5) adjectives that best describe yourself. Write
down the reason/s why you chose those according to my
friends, I am very responsible.

3.3 Scriptural Reading

Read, or ask one of the students to read, the passage
from the Word of God, Worksheet No. 3. Allow them to
mark or underline the sentences or phrases that strike
them. After some explanation, give them time for
silence. Allow them to write out their personal
definition or description of freedom. You may give them
the opportunity to share their definition of freedom
with the persons around them.

3.4 Activity: How Free Am I?

Direct the participants to their booklets, and prepare
them to answer the test How Free Am I? Worksheet No.
4. Assist the students in answering and scoring their
tests. Explain how the numbers will explain their
strong and weak points with regard to freedom.

3.5 Input on Decision Making

Explain the importance of good decision-making in the
growth of ones freedom. Explain the following rules
for good-decision making.
It is not easy to make decisions. But we need to
decide, if we want to grow. A person who cannot decide
will not grow. To be able to use your freedom well, we
must learn how to make good decisions.

13

Divide the class into small groups of 5-6 members.

All our gifts and talents come from God. Jesus Christ, who
became a human like all of us, showed us the great
treasure hidden in each of us. He freed us from all
the obstacles preventing us from being ourselves,
especially from evil and sin. By dying on the cross
and rising from the dead, he gave us example of real
freedom. The Holy Spirit is living in us, empowering
us from within, and
enabling us to use all our
powers (body and the power to move, mind and the
power to think, free will and the power to choose,
heart and the power to love) so that we can become
truly ourselves.

Sit closely together in a circular form. Share your

worksheets. Everyone should take the chance to share.
If needed, you may ask questions regarding what was

sharing,

ask

the

following

Were you able to express yourself and say something about

yourself? How did you feel?
2.4. In Expressing Oneself

For

a Christian, genuine freedom therefore is being

oneself, according to the plan of God the Father, the
example of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy
Spirit. Freedom is first of all
being free from the
obstacles that enslave us. Because of our many
feelings of rejection and fears, because of our
grudges
and
painful
memories,
because
of
our
selfishness and sins, we are like slaves inside the
bottle. We cannot move; we feel
uncomfortable; we
cannot do anything. Freedom is therefore being free
for all the wonderful things God has prepared for us.
When we learn to love God the Father, when we follow
Jesus our Brother, when we allow the Spirit, to work
in us, we are like eagles on Mount Apo, ready to f l y
high. We are able to love God and people, and become
fully ourselves.

12

Conclude the activity with these words.

Many of you are able to express yourselves, to speak
out and say what is inside you, to share your life,
your dreams, and hopes with one another. You feel
eager and happy, especially because you are talking
about yourselves. Some of you still feel ashamed or
afraid to speak out. Sometimes, there are people who
refuse to speak because they are upset and angry.
As we grow up, we are being challenged more and more
to express ourselves: to speak about ourselves, and
about the other persons and things around us. We are
being challenged to communicate and relate with
others. Are we ready for this challenge? Do we have
the inner freedom that enables us to express
ourselves? What is this inner freedom?

3. Second Part: Freedom and Decision-Making

Direct them to the Worksheet no. 2

3.1 Activity: The Bottle Experience
As you explain, slowly carry out the activity.

This is called the Bottle Experience. We need the

utmost cooperation and seriousness of all. Find a
place where you are comfortable. Just sit down and
out down your things. Relax, breath slowly. Close
your eyes and follow the directions. Imagine You are
on the top of Mount Apo. The view is beautiful, the
clouds are within your reach. Raise your arms, open
your palms, stretch your fingers and reach out for
the clouds. Enjoy touching and playing with the
clouds. Now instead, you are in a dark room. Keep
your arms close to your chest. You are slowly being
squeezed into a small medicine bottle. Your hands and
shoulders are being pressed together. Your head is
being pushed down. It is so tight inside the bottle.
You can hardly move.
Remain in the bottle wait for
someone to come behind you and tap you on your
shoulder and tell you to come out.
You may repeat these sentences until most of them look
physically squeezed up. Move slowly among them.
Pretend to stop beside a few, but do not tap
especially those who are all squeezed up. After three
minutes, tap the shoulder of around 10 students.

3.2 Input on Freedom

Process the activity by explaining what genuine

freedom is.
We just did an activity to experience freedom
and un freedom. Freedom is not just being able
to do anything and everything. Genuine freedom
is being oneself. Our self comes from God the
Father, who created us in his image and
likeness, and filled us with an infinite array
of
possibilities according to his wonderful
plan for each of us.
