V.
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Have a drill on basic division facts using flash cards or window cards. This can be done
through a game like relay.
2. Review
A. Checking of assignment
Find the quotient.
1. 217 7 2. 605 5 3. 144 12 4. 275 25 5. 738 6
3. Motivation
Ask: Do you help your parents at home? In what ways do you help them? When you see
your parents faces glow when you helped them, what did you feel (Instill the value of
helpfulness or being helpful.)
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Present this situation to the class.
Kathleen helped her mother repack 200 canned
goods to be given to 10 families who were affected by
fire in their barangay. How many canned goods will
each family receive?
Ask: What kind of a child is Kathleen? Do you think her mother will be happy to see
Kathleen helping her? If you were Kathleen, will you also help your mother, friends,
and teachers? Why?
Ask: What are the given facts what is asked in the problem? What operation will be used
to solve the problem? How will you show the solution?
2. Performing the Activities
Let the pupils work in pairs. Ask them to think of ways to find the answer.
Solution 1: The long method
Solution 2: The short method
200 10 = 20
20 1 = 20

3. Processing the Activities

Ask the pairs of pupils to show their work on the board.
Ask: Now did you find the quotient? Did we have the same quotient in the two methods
used? Which one is easier to use, the long method or the short one'?
For the short method:
How is the short method done?
What pattern is being used?
Now many zeros are there in the dividend? in the divisor? Which of the two will be
your reference when you cancel the number of zeros to make division easier and
faster?
Let the pupils get their LM and study Explore and Discover on page 55 of LM Math Grade
4.

Guide the pupils to discover the pattern oi shortcut method of dividing numbers by
powers of ten. Lead the pupils to analyze how to arrive at the correct answer easier and
faster.
4. Reinforcing the Concept and Skill
A. Follow the rule to complete each table.
Rule: Divide by 10
Rule: Divide by 100
Rule: Divide by 1000

Lead the
pupils to generalize as follows:
8000
To
divide numbers by 10, 100, or 1000, cancel/remove as
2000
many zeros
in the dividend as there are in the divisor. Then, divide
1000
the
remaining numbers.

6. Applying
to New and Other Situations
A. Find
the missing dividend, divisor, or quotient
1. N 1 000 = 8
3. 400 10 = N
5. 620 N= 62
2. 700 N = 70
4. N 100 = 39
B. Solve each problem.
1. How many pesos are there in 32 000 centavos?
2. How many 200-mL bottles are there in a 43 000-rriL can of vinegar?
3. There are 100 cm in a meter. If a road is 742 000 cm long, how many meters long is
it?
4. How many meters long is a ribbon that is 2500-cm long?
5. Suppose you had Php1,000,000 in Php100-bills. If you could give away one Php-100bill in a minute, how long would it take you to give away all the money?
C. For more exercise, ask the pupils to do items 1 to 10 under Apply Your Skills on page
