The Region 15C tournament, annually one of the

best attended amateur baseball
tournaments in the state, will
be held at Roscoe and Paynesville this year.
The day games will be
played at Roscoe with the
night games being at Paynesville. Roscoe has hosted the
tournament in the past. For
Paynesville, this year is a rehearsal of sorts for next year
when they will host the entire
tournament.
Roscoe asked us to host
the night games this year, said
Dale Hess, former manager of
the Paynesville Pirates. This
will be a nice tune-up for next
year.
Both diamonds have made
improvements in the past few
years. Roscoe, which hosted
the 15C tournament in 2004,
has made significant improvements. While a new score-

and Lake Henry. The baseball tradition is
strong here.
Dale Hess, former manager of the Paynesville Pirates

board is the most noticeable, it

is not the only one.
We put some new bleachers behind home plate, Dale
Mackedanz said. We will be
moving the old ones along the
third base side.
A brick backstop and netting was placed behind the
plate in the past few years. A
new sprinkler system has kept
the field looking well, and
on the field, a new pitching
mound has been built.
Paynesville is hosting the
night games on the high school
field. That is where the Paynesville Pirates play their games.
The Pirates also care for the
facility in the summer months.
The facility has had some ma-

jor upgrades in the past years.

The most obvious is an
imposing grandstand plaza
area.
There are two big plaza areas behind home plate,
Hess said. Under the grandstand are storm shelters that
hold batting cages and pitching areas.
The other improvement
included building mounds
along the foul lines for additional seating, allowing people
to sit on the grass and watch a
game.
We got a 40 percent
FEMA grant to help us, Hess
said. All together it cost over
one million dollars.

The redesigned park

includes clear sight lines.
There is not a pole or structure in the way of viewing
from the grandstand area.
Completely
handicapped
accessible, the grandstand
also hosts a press box and
concession areas.
Most of the viewing
is above ground level. We
will be placing a temporary
fence along the right field
foul line, Hess said. We
will have everything for
concessions.
Hess came to the Pirates
after playing with the Lake
Henry Lakers. While with
the Lakers, he learned to appreciate the crowds the Region 15C can produce. He
knows Paynesville will be
ready for that crowd.
This school district
feeds four amateur programs, Hess said. It feeds
Paynesville, Roscoe, Regal
and Lake Henry. The baseball tradition is strong here.

Elrosa Saints

At times, the Elrosa Saints played as if

they were on a mission.
The team won its first 10
games of the SCL season,
wrapping up a SCL-North
playoff spot fairly early.
When talking of the
Saints, the player that everyone considers is Ethan
Vogt. A dominating pitcher
with a .47 ERA, he is a key
component to the Saints
offense.
Another key to the
line-up is Cody Eichers,
who along with fellow
first-year Saint, AJ Hadley,
has fit well into the Saints
line-up. Kevin Kuefler and

Meire Grove Grovers

Most teams talk about

the runs they have scored.
Meire Grove has made a
reputation by how many
runs they dont give up.
The team allowed only 33
runs in its first 11 games.
Only Lake Henry, Farming and Spring Hill have
scored more than three
against them in SCL contests.
The pitching staff has
a lot to do with that success. Matt Imdieke has
had an incredible year, allowing six runs total in six
games. Jacob Imdieke has
also pitched well, keeping
the ball in play for his defense.
Except for their 20-4
win over Farming, the

Matt Schmitz have also

helped to make a minor
change of the guard an
easy task at Elrosa.
Vogt is an established
pitcher, and this year the
Saints have others to help
with their mound duties.
Austin Imdieke has picked
up two wins and Brady
Weller has also had quality innings. Aaron Vogt is
an effective reliever for the
Saints.
During the regular
season, the Saints have
shown they could beat all
comers. No one will conbatters have had

much success against
beat in the post season.
Elrosas Ethan Vogt this
year. There have also been
few pitchers who have
stopped him from hitting.

Grover offense has not

always produced needed
runs, as reflected in their
6-5 record through 11
games.
Andrew Welle, Tanner Klaphake and Trevor Sawyer are among the
teams top hitters this year.
They, and rest of the team,
have developed a knack
for playing small ball. The
team had 13 steals and 17
sacrifices in their first 11
games.
The small ball attack
may not produce a lot of
runs, but with a strong defense and good pitching,
the Grovers have not needed a lot of runs to win ball
games.

AJ Hadley has established

himself in the Elrosa
offense and as the teams
second baseman.

Spring Hill Chargers

Spring Hill is a team

that will hit and score runs.
The bats wielded by Eric
Terres, Austin Schoenberg,
Eric Schoenberg, Shawn
Schoenberg, Nate Terres
and Jamie Terres, have
more than once produced
rallies and runs that win
ball games.
Throw into the mix
contributions from Louie Opatz and Kyle Bertram and you have an offense that few teams have
stopped from hitting or
scoring. The team can produce runs by hitting for
power, with five different

Greenwald Cubs

While most teams

have sought to find a way
to make the playoffs, Greenwald has struggled to
find a win. The team has
not been able to muster
enough runs.
Its offense does have
the hard-hitting Jordan
Prill, who homered twice
for the team. Ryan Kraemer has emerged as a
steady batter and Brandon

runs. They can also manufacture runs with steals,
singles and sacrifices.
The Chargers pitching
staff usually does a good
job of keeping opponents
from getting away from
them. Jordan Welle, Austin Schoenberg and Opatz
have all earned wins this
year while pitching for
Spring Hill.
Spring Hill has been
about .500 all year in the
SCL-North standings, but
they have also shown they
know what to do in order
to win games.

Worms has also hit regularly.

The team has hurt itself at times with errors.
Putting pressure on pitchers are Adam Ulbricht,
Worms, Pete Lucken and
Nick Rademacher.
Greenwald has played
well in some games, but so
far it has not been enough
to get them into the playoffs.

Austin Schoenberg is not only a solid infielder, he also

pitches and is among the top hitters with the Chargers.

Funk and Joe Stangler.

In Jim Thull, the pitching features someone very
familiar along with Ty Reller, who is becoming well
respected. The two have
shared most of the mound
duties and both have been
hard to score on. The SilverStreaks allowed 36 runs
in their first 10 games.
The Silverstreaks have
learned to use the speed in
their line-up to score runs,
and the pitching and defense limit the runs they
allow. As the regular season ended and post-season
play begins, that will be a
good combination to have.

Last year in the Region 15C tournament,

New Munich showed that
it had young players ready
to play in the SCL. Those
players, mixed in with
well-known veterans, have
kept the SilverStreaks in
the thick of the SCL-North
standings.
Hunter Rademacher
combines an ability to put
the bat on the ball with
speed for some exciting
extra-base hits. Will Funk
has emerged as a player to watch and is among
the leaders in runs scored
on the team. Those talents
have blended in well with
the experience of Chad

The Lakers put a team

on the field that combined
the skills and experience
of veterans as well as the
raw talent of some younger players.
There was a bit of a
changing of the guard on
the team, but they still remained a force in the SCLSouth. Shane and Josh
Kampsen are batters few
teams have kept off base.
They both hit over .400.
Jason Kampsen and Ryan
Wuertz have come through
more often than not when
the team needed an RBI.

Matthew Quade is definitely developing as one

the better young shortstops
in the league.
Their pitching staff
features Weston Brinkman, who has pitched over
half of the Lakers innings.
Jason Kampsen and Josh
Roelike have also pitched
well for the team.
The Lakers, while
among the highest-scoring SCL teams, found that
winning streaks were hard
to come by, but they also
ended a few teams winning streaks.

Ty Reller has emerged as a pitcher who can control a

game for New Munich.

1965 SilverStreaks
made a name at state

Chuck
Schwieters
has no problem recalling
his best memory from the
1965 baseball season.
I hit a three-run home
run in the fifth of the state
tournament, Schwieters
said.
Actually, he was the
first SilverStreak to ever
homer in a state tournament. The 1965 team
became the first SilverStreaks team to reach the
state playoffs.
Otto Thelen, who
managed the team, remembers the game. He
has no problem listing the
starting line-up.
At third base was
Dick Nathe and shortstop was Glen Klimmek,
Thelen said. Eddie Toenies was at second base
and Tony Massmann was
at first. In the outfield
were Rube Nathe, Chuck
Schwieters and Romie
Sand. I started Ron Backes
(drafted from Farming) as
catcher, and Buddy Ostendorf was at pitcher.
Something else Thelen recalled about the state
game is that it was the first
time New Munich played
as the SilverStreaks.
Before the game a
guy came from the Minnesota Baseball Association
and asked what our nickname was, Thelen said.
I said we didnt have one.
He looked at me and said,
You are getting a little
gray. How about the SilverStreaks?
New Munich came to
the state game with a good
tandem of pitchers in Ostendorf and Rueben Nathe
who had helped New Munich during the regular
season and the SCL playoffs. The team also drafted Bob Schmitz from St.
Martin and Lee Sand from
Greenwald.
The 6-4 loss to Halstad in the first round of
state marked a memorable post season for the
team. It was a post season
they almost didnt have.
The team came into the
season with expectations
of a good year, but knew
the competition would be
formidable in the Stearns
County League.
Farming, Richmond,
Lake Henry they were
all good, Schwieters said.
We struggled just to reach
playoffs.
At the time, the SCL
was an eight-team league.
Four teams qualified for
playoffs. Schwieters had
been with the team for
about two years, but his
association was longer
than that.
I was the batboy with
the team before I played,
Schwieters said. After I
joined, I sat on the bench

for about a year-and-ahalf.

In 1965, he became
a regular. The team had
some talented players. Besides the state starting unit,
the team had Ron LeClaire,
the regular catcher, Dave
Schulzetenberg, Rich Holdvogt, Ron Hoppe, Dennis
Roering, Ken Steinhofer,
Roman Sand and Francis
Hoppe. The batboy was
Bonnie LeClaire. The team
had so many members that
three extra uniforms had to
be made before all could
be suited up. Thelens
wife, Fran, sewed those
uniforms.
The 14-game regular
season saw New Munich
come into their final game
with a 7-6 record and only
the slimmest of chances of
reaching the SCL playoffs.
They had to finish at 8-6
for any hope of making the
playoffs.
For us to make the
playoffs, we had to defeat
Richmond and Lake Henry
had to lose at Greenwald,
Schwieters said.
As their final inning
came around, New Munich trailed 8-1, setting up
a fantastic rally.
Things started clicking in the ninth inning,
Schwieters said.
Somehow the Sil-

verStreaks kept putting

runs across the plate until
Schwieters found himself on third base with the
score tied.
Buddy (Ostendorf)
then hit one between first
and second. They fielded
it, but dropped the ball,
Schwieters said. The winning run scored.
A few hours later,
New Munich found out
Lake Henry had lost its
game and the two teams
would have to playoff for
the fourth seed.

Richmond Royals

Never count the Royals out of a game, or for

that matter, out of the
season. While the tough
competition in the SCLSouth meant the team was
rarely above .500, they
also kept other teams from
being much better. A solid offense that does the
basics correctly is built
around Cole Schmitz and
Scott Ruegemer. While the
team does not have a lot of
power, it still finds a way
to score runs and stay in

games.
The pitching staff
features the reliable Andy
Bauer as its primary starter. Adam Backes has won
three games for the team
and in recent weeks, Jordan Neu emerged as a
good relief pitcher.
Richmond has been
on both the winning and
losing ends of close games
this year. The Royals are
a team few opponents can
overlook and even fewer
can put away easily.

St. Martin Martins

The rebuilding effort

started a few years ago at
St. Martin, is now being
seen as a reloading effort.
The team has again
found ways to score the
runs needed to get wins
and stay in the thick of the
SCL-South standings.
Kyle Lieser and Bryan
Schlangen are batters opponents need to consider
when facing the Martins,
but they are just two of
a strong group of batters
the Martins send up to the
plate. Kyle Lieser has the
power and speed to turn
any deep hit into an extra
base run. His stealing often
puts him into scoring posi-

tion. Bryan Schlangen has

produced runs with RBI
hits. Scott Schlangen, Matt
and Mike Schlangen and
Austin Arceneau have all
hit well.
The teams pitching
received a boost with the
addition of Ben Schroeder.
As a consistent strikeout
pitcher, he has allowed
fewer hits than innings
pitched as he won four
games. Jake Harrison and
Scott Schlangen are also
dependable pitchers.
The Martins have
again held their own in the
SCL-South and will have
a say in the final playoff
mix.

What Schwieters recalls most of the year is it

Black Sox, the early years

In late April of 1990,

Wes Schiffler connected
for a single at the Melrose
High School baseball diamond.
While only a single,
the hit was historic. The
single was the first hit by
a member of the Melrose
Black Sox baseball team.
Then a new team in Central Minnesota, the Black
Sox, which have since
moved to Freeport, have
one of best records of
area teams in the last 25
years. Whether playing in
the County Line League,
Lakewood League or the
Victory League, the Black
Sox have always been
a team no opponent can
overlook.
The groundwork for
that success was laid in the
teams first season when it
finished 9-5 in the County
Line League and reached
the playoff championship
before the season ended.
As with a number of organizations, it started with
conversation.
When I moved to
Melrose in September of

1989, I roomed with Steve

Anderson and he mentioned that his brother,
Tim Yogi Anderson was
moving back into the area,
Craig Sawyer said. We all
played college ball together and thought we should
start a team in Melrose.
Steve said there were some
guys who werent playing
for anybody and he felt we
could put together a team.
I didnt know many people
from the area so he started
calling and talking to people he knew might want to
play.
Previously, Anderson,
along with his brothers,
Matthew and Tim, had
played with New Munich.
In those years, New
Munich was short on local
players, so a fair number
of Melrose High players
began to fill up the roster
over the early 80s, Anderson said. By the later 80s,
a core group of younger New Munich boys
Funks, Hoppes, Ostendorfs and Sands became
old enough to play and the
dugout was getting pretty

full.
Steves phone calls
netted enough interest in
playing with the Black
Sox, despite the fact that
many of the players could
have played for established
area teams. But, there was
a certain attraction for
most of them about playing in Melrose.
The idea of playing
and representing your own
town always has a strong
appeal, Anderson said.
It didnt take us long at
all to have that sense that
this is our team; most of us
were from Melrose. All of
us played together, wearing jerseys with Melrose
scrawled across the chest.
We felt at home, that this
was where we belonged.
With the basis for a
team established, they
needed to find a league.
They were accepted into
the County Line League.
The league had an immediate natural rivalry with
Sauk Centre. A call to Melrose High School helped
them secure a home field
diamond. They also had

help from businesses and

individuals with cash, time
and material donations.
Gary and Diane
Langer provided our uniforms, Anderson said.
The credit union gave a
nice donation.
The core of the team
was a combination of Melrose Area High School
graduates and some being
their college teammates
who had moved into the
area. Steve, Tim and Matt
Anderson were proven
players. Kyle Klasen, Bob
Fink and Wes Schiffler
also brought good reputations with them. There was
also a youngster in high
school named Chad Hess.
I caught the first
Black Sox, but Tim Anderson was the full time guy
and he was very good,
Hess said. Steve Anderson approached my father, Herb, wondering if I Brothers Steve (left) and Tim Anderson were an effective
could play knowing I had battery combination for the Black Sox in the early years

Of course, the answer was

Roscoe Rangers

The Rangers, knowing

they will host the Region
15C tournament, would
like part of the bracket.
First, the Rangers need to
win enough games to qualify for the playoffs. Roscoe
has the talent to do so. The
team is young and most of
them have started a rally
at some point as the team
played with its league opponents.
Jordan Schleper, Jordan Roos, Trent Gertken
and Nick Dingmann are
just a few of the players
fans are getting used to

seeing in a Ranger uniform. Veterans, Chris Vanderbeek, Brent Heinen and

Russ and RJ Leyendecker, have the experience to
help lead the team.
Roos
and
Josh
Mackedanz have become
the Rangers pitchers fans
are beginning to notice.
Both have come through
with wins over good teams
this year.
The Rangers have had
some tough losses, but
they have also shown they
are tough enough to win
A solid batter, Chris Vanderbeek is also a steady force in
key games.

Avon Lakers
The Avon Lakers
pretty much ruled the VLSouth this year. The team
did not lose a game to a division opponent in the regular season as it played at
an 11-2 record and earned
a Region 8C berth.
The Lakers pitching
staff can shut down most
teams. While Kyle Collins,
30.2ip 29k 3.52 ERA is the
Lakers pitcher most think
of, he is not their only
solid moundsman. Ryan
Morse, threw 17 innings
and won four games. Jonathan Harlander and Cody
Stich both threw over 20
innings this year.
The defense played
well behind them, rarely
giving opponents extra
chances to score.
The Lakers offense,

however, created a number of chances to score and

cashed in on them. Riley
Voit developed into an
excellent offensive threat,
collecting over 20 hits
and scoring 20 runs. Rick
Hendrickson, the veteran
lead-off batter, and Carter
Holthaus both hit regularly. Hendrickson is also a
threat to steal at any time
in the game.
Adam Harlander, as
well as Holthaus, Hendrickson and Voit, all hit
well with runners in scoring position.
The Lakers were guaranteed a region berth because of their regular season finish. They could very
well be playing in state
this year.
Kyle Collins is one of the best pitchers in the area and
has helped Avon to a Region 8C berth.

St. Stephen Steves

The Steves consistently played well during the
year as they earned a playoff spot in the VL-South.
No team overlooked them.
They often played in close
games with five of their
13 regular season games
being decided by two runs
or less. Offensively, Ben
Omann, Austin Guggenberger, Jason Slivnik and
Bo Schmitz could always
be counted on to deliver
hits and runs.

The pitching staff,

headed by the reliable and
effective Nick Krippner,
helped keep games close.
Besides Krippner, the
team also had successful
outings from Andrew Stolt
and Blake and Austin Guggenberger.
The Steves talent provided some exciting games
and helped them earn a
third-place finish in the
VL-South regular season.

Region 8C starts on Aug. 1

AMAT EU R BAS EBALL - VICT ORY LEAGU E

July 22, 2015

Holdingford Express

The Express turned a

corner of sorts this year,
winning four regular season games and qualifying
for the VL-South playoffs.
When the Express kept
games close, they usually
won. They also faced Freeport in tough games, falling in two one-run games.
When people thought
of the Express, they came
to think of Derek Thielen
first. He was not only a solid hitter, but he had three of
the teams regular season

wins and pitched almost

half of their innings. Other veterans who helped the
team were Derek Biniek
and Jeremy Springer. The
team was also helped by
newcomers such as Austin
Gerads, who played well at
third, and Nathan Brinker,
who had a knack for getting on base.
The Express looked
shaky at times on defense,
but for the most part, were
consistent in that part of
the game also.

The Black Sox continued to play good baseball.

The offensive unit, featuring Carter Sawyer, Eric
Eveslage and Ryan Tschida, continue to get on base
ahead of the bats of Chad
Hess, Troy Frieler and
Grant Hess. Ike Sawyer
and Seth Noll have proven
they can get on and around
the bases.
The team brought

catcher Johnny Benson,

outfielder Noll and infielder Isaac Sawyer into the
mix this year. The team remains solid all-around.
Mitch Reller and Carter Sawyer have emerged
as the teams top pitchers.
Both have shown they can
control games. Backed by
the teams defense and offense, they had five wins
this season.

St. Wendel Saints

The Saints finished
their season on a high note,
winning an extra-inning
game at St. Stephen. The
team played very good
baseball at times and with
John Pogatchnik, Lee Maciej and Taylor Nitz in the
line-up, had batters other
teams respected. All three
had at least 10 hits during
the year.

The team played adequate defense behind its

pitchers, usually sending
Ryan Blommer, Pogatchnik, Kyle Jarnot or Calvin
Becker to the mound.
While they finished
with a 3-10 record in the
VL-South, the Saints were
often competitive. Five of
the losses were by three
runs or less.

UPSALA BLUE JAYS

Shortstop Lee Maciejs defense and offense helps the

Saints during the season.

Sobieski Skis

As the defending
Class C champions, Sobieski was the team everyone wanted to defeat. In
the Victory League West,
only one team (Nisswa)
did.
The Skis earned a spot
in the Region 8C tournament by winning the
VL-West. The team has a
good pitching staff led by
Tyler Jendro. Cole Jendro
and Josh Wenzel also have

earned wins for the team.

Offensively, Scott Litchy has fit in well with a
roster that includes Collin Ekman, Riley Hirsch,
Jonathan Czech and Joey
Hanowski. The Skis outscored their opponents by
60 runs in the regular season.
The season is not over
yet for the Skis and there
are still opponents who
want to face them.

Upsala is a team that

can usually be counted
on to score runs. With hitters like Brady Burggraff,
Brandon Welinski, Brock
Cichon and Adam Gerads
in the line-up, the team can
usually count on getting
hits. Justin Lampert and
Matt Swanson often made
hits while men were on
base.

The teams pitching is

anchored by veterans John
Fuchs and Matt Swanson.
Those two combined to
strike out almost 60 batters
this year.
The Blue Jays, at
times, simply pounded out
victories, but also have
the patience to win close
games.

Flensburg was able to

score runs this year. With
AJ Jenks, Isaac Thoma,
Justin Jenks, Lucas Thoma
and Josh Genske in the
line-up, the Falcons had
batters who got on base.
The team did put it
together for a 10-3 upset

over Randall late in the

not always score enough to
win, and missed the VLWest playoffs.
Luke Thoma did the
bulk of the pitching and
earned both wins for Falcons.

Opole played some of

its best baseball against its
division opponents. However, those efforts didnt
always translate into wins.
Jake Nelson emerged
as the teams primary
pitcher, but Max Posch and
Sam Butler also pitched
regularly.

Black Sox continued from page 9__________________________________________________________________

Among the players with the club in the early years were (front, from left) Tim Anderson, Todd Kuzma, Jamie Hemker, Osvaldo Carbajal, Chris Grove, Kurt Langer, Scott
Picha and Nathan Hess; (back) Craig Sawyer, Steve Anderson, Matt Anderson, Chad Hess, Kyle Klassen, Mark Sannes, Todd Dingmann, Pete Grove and Ryan Spanier.

a yes from dad and me.

He picked me up almost
weekly for games.
Tim was gone that
weekend, so 16-year-old
sophomore Chad Hess
caught for us, said Steve
Anderson. He wasnt
even on varsity at the time
but he did a fantastic job
catching.
Erickson started and
struck out 10 in the first
five innings. Steve Anderson pitched three innings
and Klasen finished the
game.
Besides
Schifflers
single being the first hit,
the Black Sox also had
their first home run that
game. Being a hit by an
Anderson was not a surprise, just who hit the ball
was.
I hit the first home
run for the Sox with a run
shot in the seventh, Steve
Anderson said.
For the most part,
however, it was Tim Anderson and Craig Sawyer
who provided the teams
power. With those two hit-

ting behind a number of

players who consistently
reached base, the Black
Sox scored runs. With a
strong defense and solid
pitching, those runs often
resulted in game-winning
leads.
Others
were
not
known well to local fans,
but would soon leave their
mark. Sawyer; who had
played with the Andersons
at Concordia in Moorhead, and Dave Erickson;
who had moved into the
area from Jordan, brought
a reputation as fine pitchers from that team. There
was also Todd Dingmann,
Duane Duevel, Dean Elfering, Pete Grove, Glen
Middendorf and Pat Schad.
I was a little hesitant
about joining, said Schad.
Baseball wasnt always
my first sport (as far as
passion) so I had some
hesitation joining a bunch
of guys who had been
around it their whole lives.
From the start the team
was a good team.
The Black Sox won

their first game, and then

went on to become a force
in the County Line League.
From the onset, there was
sense of being a team with
that group.
Pete Grove was from
Grey Eagle and I was from
Wheaton but had set up
business in Melrose and
Dave Erickson was good
friends with Bob Fink,
Sawyer said. Otherwise
everybody else had graduated from Melrose or was
going to school in Melrose. This made it very
easy to attract players to
the team.
Over the years, the
team began to resemble
other amateur teams in the
area. Family connections
became common.
We were like any
other amateur team as
it was based on family and friends. A lot of
brothers such as Andersons, Sawyers, Hesses,
Spaniers, Groves, Meyers, Berscheits, with first
cousins Tschidas, and the
father-son
Mettenburg

combination, said Hess.

Then mix in Klasen,
Langer and brother-in-law
Terwey, Kemper, Hemker,
Dingmann, Eveslage cousins and Klaphake.
Those names have all
contributed to a successful tradition. From the
first year, the Black Sox
not only did well in the
County Line League, but
also played and competed
very well against the Cold
Spring Springers and other
Class B teams in the area.
We beat a powerful 18-1 St. Cloud Beaudreaus team 13-6 in a
game at Putz Field, Anderson said. We scored
eight runs in the top of
the first inning. I think our
first seven guys had hits.
We just flat out had a good
game and beat them. The
next day in the St. Cloud
Times it said that they
made six errors and gave
up 12 unearned runs. That
was the excuse. Why else
would they lose to Melrose?
The team was partic-

ularly strong in pitching.

Steve Anderson proved
himself in high school,
college and amateur. Erickson was equally as impressive.
Not all games were
decided by pitching. Melrose and Sauk Centre had
some quality contests that
year. Sauk Centre ended
up edging Melrose in the
playoffs. Contests with the
formidable Regal Eagles
were anticipated games.
For one game, the Black
Sox took the win in dramatic fashion.
Tim hit two home
runs that day one in
the bottom of the ninth
with one out to tie up the
game and send us to extra innings. Craig Sawyer
knocked in the winning
run in the 11th, Anderson
said.
If there was a bit of a
drawback to the season,
it was that the Black Sox
home diamond was also
the high school diamond.
While the diamond itself
was a good place to play,

being on a high school

field did not lend itself to
the typical amateur experience. There was no real
place for concession sales,
and the field was built for
high school games.
They have made several improvements since
we played, but it is better
to have your own diamond
for amateur programs. I
actually enjoyed playing
at other diamonds because
they were in better shape,
Sawyer said.
Over the years, the
Black Sox would make
different diamonds their
home diamond, and have
now moved to Freeport.
They have played in different leagues and regions
and made the trip to state
in 1991, 1999, 2000, 2002,
2004, 2007 and 2011.
They have created a legacy of strong teams, good
baseball and a winning tradition.
A tradition that was
started 25 years ago.

good defense, committing less than two errors a

Buckman Billygoats
The Billygoats are a
competitive team that will
stay with most opponents
during the year. With Jeremy Payne, Ben Boser and
Travis Kahl, the Billygoats
have the players who can
get on base and score runs.
Jeremy Monson often follows those batters with

RBI hits.
The pitching of Corey
Egan and Monson helped
keep the Billygoats in
most games. They combined to strike out 70 batters this year.
The team has played
and consistently won close
games.

Nisswa Lightning

It is not out of line to

say the Nisswa Lightening
hammered their way into
the VL-North regular season championship.
The team hits home
runs, and does so regularly. Aaron Jenkins, Jason Roepke and Jeremiah
Piepkorn all had at least
four home runs before
the playoffs began. That
power, combined with

to runs and victories.
The pitching staff has
dependable arms in Brett
Jenkins, Roepke, Nate
DeChaine and Scott Sand.
None of them pitched huge
numbers of innings in the
regular season and they
should be ready for the
playoffs.

The Rebels are a team

no one can overlook. They
kept pace with VL-North
leader Nisswa all year until the final weeks of the
regular season.
Ethan Branum, Ray
Austin, Logan Kalis and
Brett Kramer did the bulk
of the pitching and kept
opponents in check. Bra-

RBI connections.
The team generally
played good defense behind its pitchers. Nathan
Ehnstrom did most of the
pitching, throwing in over
40 innings. Jake Zontelli
was also a regular on the
Range Miner mound.

The Saints had problems sustaining a consistent offense during the regular season and won just
one game. Zach Heidman,
Jake Francis and Benjamin
Stall all hit well, but there
were not always follow-up
hits to get them across

the bases. Heidman, with

two home runs and four
doubles, had most of the
teams power shots.
The team used four
pitchers regularly, with
Jordan Hunstad leading the
team in innings pitched.

The Black Sox can

score runs in bunches,
as their wins over Sauk

have also kept most teams

Long Prairie Predators

The Long Prairie Predators established themselves as the team to beat
in the Resorters West. The
Predators scored runs in

bunches and scored often.

A good pitching staff and

The Bombers jumped

to a quick lead in the Resorters West this year and
have pretty much stayed
there. The team is capable

of scoring runs. They also

held opponents in check
five times this year. The
Bombers allowed only one
run in a game.

Osakis Hawks
A late-season run
brought the Osakis Hawks
a respectable record in
the Resorters West. The
team started slow with a

1-3 start, then caught fire

and, at one point, won five
straight. In that stretch,
they did not give up more
than five runs in a game.

Ashby As
The As have played
well in the Resorters West,
outscoring opponents 7661 in 13 games. The team

scored 10 or more runs

three times this season;
only one team scored 10
on the As.
