Title of Activity:

How Much Money

Number of Teams & Group Size:

Involve all participants as 1 big group

Logistics Needed:
None

Time Allocated:
10 - 20 minutes

Goal:
Form groups that add up to the exact amount of money

Preparation & Set-Up:

Use an outdoor or indoor area that allows space for movement.
Decide on the numerical value (amount) to assign the participants (if
applicable).
Calculate the total amount of money, based on the total number of
participants in the class.
Prepare a few numerical values (amounts), enough for the number of rounds
youll play.

Directions for Conducting the Activity:

1. Gather all participants into an area that allows enough space for movement.
2. Inform participants that you will assign them an amount, which represents an
amount of money. Ladies = $2, Gentlemen = $1.
3. Let participants know that they are to form groups, based on the amount of
money that you will call out / state.
4. Call out the 1st amount, and allow participants time to find groups.
5. Once participants have gathered in groups, check the amount of money
represented in the group.
6. Then, call out the next amount. Repeat the activity at least 3 more times,
varying the amount of money each time.

Specific Rules:
1. Participants will be assigned a numerical value that represents an amount of
money.
2. Ladies are assigned a value of $2 dollars. Gentlemen are assigned a value of
$1 dollar.
3. When the facilitator calls out / states an amount of money, participants are to
form groups that represent the total value of money stated.
4. The amount of money called out / stated by the facilitator must not be lower
than any single individual in the room.

Variations:
1. Use different monetary values. Instead of $1 and $2, use 10 and 20, or use
$10 and $20.
2. Use different currencies. Instead of Dollars, use a different currency, such as
Renminbi, Yen, Rand, Rupiah, etc.

Learning Points:
Alertness
Quick thinking
Resolving conflict
Communication
Basic arithmetic
Group dynamics
Energizer

Facilitator Notes:
Ensure that the amount of money you call out / state, for each round, is
different. Example: $15, $8, $12, $3, etc.
If dealing with participants from other countries / different currencies, ask
them to use the dollar currency.
Alternatively, use their native currency, but adjust the numerical values
accordingly.
Do not penalise groups if theyre unable to form the required amount.
If you decide to reassign the value of participants, be sensitive to how you
catergorise them. Here, gender is used. You may also use hair length, shoe
size, or wearing spectacles / no spectacles, etc.
