medications I take, a friend
recently suggested I start
keeping my own medical re-
cords at home, but I’m not
sure where to start. Can you
offer any tips or suggestions
on the best way to go about
doing this?

Keeping a set of your own
personal health records is a
great tool to help you get a
better handle on your own
health care, as well as avoid-
ing possible medical errors.
Here are some tips to help
you get started.
It’s a fact that the more
doctors you see, the more
medical files you have. And
the more scattered your
medical records are, the
higher your risk of drug er-
rors, missed diagnoses, and
other dangerous glitches.
The solution: Keep a set of
your own records at home.
And with all the self-help
tools available today, it’s
easier than it sounds.
Helpful tools
Today, there are literally
dozens of Web sites, com-
puter software and paper-
based products (some are
free; others charge) that can
help you gather your medi-
cal information, create your
health records and keep
them updated. The idea:

Getting started
To start your personal
health record, you’ll need to
request a copy of your health
records from all your health-
care providers, including
your general practitioner,
plus your eye doctor, dentist
and any other specialist you
have seen. Find out if your
records are in an electronic
format you can access, or re-
quest paper copies.
Once you have your paper
records in hand, keep them
together in a file folder or
binder so they’re easy to find.
Organize the information in
a way that makes sense to
you, but mark it clearly, so
it makes sense to others as
well. And be sure your loved
ones have access to it if you
become incapacitated. If
your records are stored elec-
tronically (on your computer
or a Web site), be sure they
know where to find it, and
have any necessary pass-
words for access.
After you’ve created your
personal health record, be
sure to take it with you to
all doctor appointments and
remember to keep updating
it. To make your electronic
health records portable
there are a number of han-
dy USB flash drives (like
www.medkey.com, www.em-
rystick.com, www.vitalkey.
com) that are about the size
of a house key that can hold
your medical records and be
updated easily.
What to include
Here’s a checklist of what
should be included in your
personal health record:

name, contact info, birth
date, Social Security num-
ber.
! Emergency contacts in-
cluding phone numbers.
! Physicians, dentists,
other specialists. Include
addresses, phone numbers.
! Health insurance infor-
mation.
! Living will, medical
power of attorney, advance
directive.

rization, if any.
! List and dates of sig-
nificant illnesses or surger-
ies. You could request and
include a copy of your “dis-
charge summary” from each
hospital where a surgery
took place.
! Current medications
and dosages.
! Immunizations and
dates.
! Allergies or sensitivities

ASSOCIATION
Having strong opinions about ev-
erything and sharing all of them, even
when they’re not wanted, is not a for-
mula for social success. But many of us
face a problem that’s quite the opposite
- being hesitant to speak our mind and
voice our opinions, even when invited
to and when doing so could offer some
real help.
Often, we’re reluctant to speak up
because we doubt the value of what
we have to offer. We fear others may
criticize or reject our views, suggesting
we’re “wrong.” Such fears are very real,
but they shouldn’t define you.
While it takes courage to speak up,
especially if it’s something you usu-
ally do, it’s a valuable skill to learn to
manage your fears and act responsibly.
Rather than being silent and then re-
gretting not saying something, learn-
ing to express yourself can bring a real
sense of accomplishment and involve-
ment.
Speaking up doesn’t mean that
you’ve made your self-doubts disap-
pear, but that you’re courageously tak-
ing action in the face of those doubts.
The key to speaking up is to mix the
acknowledgment of self-doubt with re-
fusing to accept the status quo.
Being respectful is an important ele-
ment in learning to speak your mind.
It starts by learning to listen first.
You need to show you understand the
views and opinions being expressed by
others before sharing your own.
Your goal is not to convince others
or start an argument, but rather to ex-
press the differences you feel. By shar-
ing your own experiences and opinions
you let others see new sides of you and
your opinions on a subject.
You can avoid arguments by starting
your views with the word “I.” You also
must accept that while what you’re ex-
pressing is what you know to be true,
others will be feeling exactly the same
way about their views.

A potential client once asked Capt.
Mike Williams to describe hooking
and landing a big shark. Williams,
who has spent a lifetime fishing and
guiding anglers in the bays and Gulf
around Galveston, answered: “It’s like
standing on a street corner with a rod
and reel and hooking a passing Har-
ley Davidson going 80 miles an hour.
I tell my new clients to anticipate the
fish fight of their lives, then multiply
their expectations by 10, and they will
come close to understanding the sheer
power of a big shark.
The only way to fully understand
what shark fishing is really all about
is to do it. Years ago, when I first began
fishing with Mike, I predicted shark
fishing would one day become the big-
gest draw for his summer fishing cli-
ents. That day has come! Mike keeps
his big Boston Whaler heading out of
the Galveston Yacht Basin, in route to
the ‘close in’ waters off Galveston Island
on a daily basis. During the summer
months, he is taking his clients out to
do battle with Black Tip, Spinner, Bull
and occasionally Hammerhead and Ti-
ger shark. One of his clients landed a
400 pounder this summer and shark in
the 50-120 pound range are common.
The hotter the weather gets, the better
the shark fishing. Most of this action
takes place within a few miles of the
Galveston beach front. A boat ride of
three to ten miles out from the Galves-
ton Jetties puts one smack dab in the
middle of some of the best shark fish-
ing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Capt. Mike employs several tech-
niques to attract and catch shark.
Floating big pieces of cut bait, or whole
gizzard shad under balloons is prob-
ably the most common but he also uses
down lines with heavy weights when
the shark are feeding closer to bottom.
Just about any large, natural bait will
entice a strike from a passing shark.

Like people, pets can suf-
fer from the discomfort of
hot, sticky days. Dr. John
August, a professor in Texas
A&M University’s College
of Veterinary Medicine &
Biomedical Sciences, offers
these tips to keep Fido from
getting fried and your kitty
from getting too sweaty.
■ Monitor temperatures
inside of cars. If you would
not keep a child inside a hot
car with the windows up,
why would you place your
pet in the same situation?
“It’s not uncommon for the
temperature to reach 120
degrees or more inside a
car on a hot summer day,”
August says. “Just as with
a child, you should never
leave a pet in a car during
the summer. Even just a few
minutes can be deadly.”
■ Airline travel is tough-
er on some pets than oth-
ers. “Dogs such as bulldogs,
Pekingese and Pugs, and
cats such as Persians, have
shorter noses than most
other breeds and can have
difficulty breathing on an
airplane and often are more
susceptible to heat stress. If
possible, try to take a direct
flight early in the morning
instead of one that has sev-
eral stops.”
■ Don’t shave your pets,
thinking it will keep them
cooler. “It’s not a good idea to
shave a pet. Animals can get
sunburn just like humans. If
you give your pets plenty of
fresh water and shade, they
should be okay, but we don’t
recommend shaving them
unless they have had skin
problems,” August says.
■ Watch your animals
around lakes or swimming
pools. “Not all dogs are nat-
