College of Saint Elizabeth Receives

$2.3 Million Bequest

he College of Saint Elizabeth has

received one of its largest bequests
ever- $2.3 million from the estate
of Joseph Scavuzzo of Short Hills. The
funds will provide student scholarships in
the memory of Scavuzzos late wife,
Katherine J. Hill. It was Hills friendship
with a CSE alumna, Marian Kerwin
Koegel, 40, that prompted the bequest.
We are very thankful to Joseph
Scavuzzo and Katherine Hill for their
generosity, said CSE President Helen J.
Streubert. It reminds us, as an institution, how deeply our influence is on the
individuals and communities that we
serve. We will use these funds, as designated by her late husband Joseph, to
honor Katherine and her commitment to
nutrition and passion for the arts.
Katherine Hill and Marian Kerwin
Koegel met when working at Prudential
Insurance in Newark, both specializing in
dietetics. Hill mentored Koegel in her
position as associate manager/head dieti-

tian overseeing the establishment of food

services in regional Prudential offices.
Hill, who died in 2007, and Koegel, who
died in 2011, maintained a lifetime
friendship.
Hill graduated from Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn as a dietitian and managed
Maries Tea Room in East Orange, owned
her own catering business, then joined
Prudential working there from 19371977. She was also a cellist in the East
Orange High School Orchestra and a
member of the Plainfield Symphony
Orchestra. She retired from Prudential in
1977 and was an active volaunteer with
New Eyes for the Needy and the Millburn
Public Library.
Scavuzzo died in 2013. He was an
architect who worked during his long
career for Prudential Insurance, ConEdison and Honeywell. Born in Newark,
he was one of eight children and at the
time of his death was survived by his
brothers, Philip and Peter Scavuzzo.

Welcome Home An Exchange

Student This Fall

school semester or year and
make a global connection through Host
an AFS Exchange Student. Each year,
AFS Intercultural Programs/USA, a leading international non-profit high school
student exchange for more than 60 years,
welcomes 2,500 high school students
from more than 90 countries into communities like Morristown. These students
are eager to attend a local high school,
live with a host family and discover what
America is all about.
AFS-USA is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS
Exchange student, families will help
build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting
with an outstanding young person.
Area resident and AFS volunteer, Sue
Fershing, whose family hosted more than
a dozen exchange students through AFS

since 1986, said "This is the most

rewarding thing we've ever done. We
love staying in touch with our AFSers,
who come back to visit us years later. It's
not the end, it's the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
Host families provide a bed and
meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support students as they would their own children.
Students come with full medical insurance and personal spending money.
Families and their hosted students
receive ongoing support from AFS staff
and experienced, local volunteers.

True Team Effort Leads To Millburn Baseball Team State Championship

were doing at that moment. We never looked forward or
backward. The final out in the championship game will
always be memorable. As a coach, I really enjoyed
watching the kids celebrate their accomplishment.
We try to encourage all of our players to be leaders,
he continued. Our seniors this year did a terrific job of
setting the tone every day. They all accepted and
embraced their roles within the team and when that happens, things usually run a lot more smoothly. Our six seniors can be proud of the fact that they are the first graduating class in the history of this proud high school to win
a New Jersey State Championship in baseball.
A major key to the success of the Millers this year was
that each player on the roster was always looking for
ways to become better baseball players. This, of course
not only helps the individual, but the entire team as well.
I can honestly say that every player on our roster
showed improvement from the first day of the season to
the last, Chapman said. That was the beauty of our season. We have some really incredible players but we were
not a team that relied on a star player or two to be successful. Each and every player on the roster contributed
something to what we accomplished. It was a true team
effort.
It is very humbling for all of us involved with the
baseball program to be the first group in school history to
capture an NJSIAA Baseball State Championship. We

realize that there are many, many people that did so much
to make this dream a reality and for that we are extremely thankful.
Look for the momentum of the Millburn High School
baseball program to continue in the right direction.
We are optimistic entering every season because we
are blessed to have quality coaches at the junior varsity
and freshman level and they consistently produce and
prepare players for our varsity program, Chapman said.
We are also the beneficiary of the great work being done
by Millburn Short Hills Youth Baseball, which is one of
the strongest in-town baseball programs in the country.
We graduate six very important seniors this year and
we are hoping that the 15 returning players with varsity
experience will serve as the core of next year's team as we
strive to reach our goals.
In the state championship win over Williamstown,
Kevin Czapelski was the winning pitcher. Nick Minter,
Max Birner and John Serruto all had doubles in the game.
Ryan Adelman and Birner each recorded two RBIs. Jack
Schwartz (two), Jordan Brisgel, Max Jacobs, Richie
Schiekofer and Birner all had stolen bases. Brian Lannino
had the shutout win on the mound for Millburn in the victory over Randolph. Czapelski had two hits and two
stolen bases versus Randolph. Michael Garawitz, Brisgel
and Minter had RBIs for the Millers in the 3-1 win over
Ridge. Czapelski was the winning pitcher.

xcellence is a word that is not very difficult to pronounce or for that matter spell, but achieving true
excellence is an entirely different proposition all
together. It happens through attributes such as hard work,
dedication, an attention to detail, the ability to learn for
errors and the willingness to persevere when there are
bumps in the road.
This spring, the Millburn High School baseball program was excellent as they earned the NJSIAA Group IV
State championship with a convincing 11-3 victory over
South Jersey Group IV Sectional champion
Williamstown on June 6 on the campus of Toms River
South High School. Millburn topped Randolph, the North
Section I Group IV champs, 4-0, in the State Group IV
semifinal round. The Millers won the North Section II
Group IV title with a 3-1 triumph over Ridge.
Millburn ultimately finished the season with an overall record of 26-6. Its important to note that the Millers
entered the North Section II Group IV bracket as the No.
5 seed. The Millers were 14-0 on their home field.
We try not to treat games differently, Millburn head
coach Brian Chapman said. You can't get too high or too
low in baseball and we try to get the kids to be consistent
in their daily approach. This particular team was able to
do that better than any team I've coached. They did an
excellent job of focusing on the present and what they

Webber Bill To Allow Youngsters To

Shovel Snow Without A Permit

ts difficult to think of snow with summer knocking on the door, but

Assemblyman Jay Webber wants to
ensure the long-time practice of shoveling
the white stuff for extra money, especially
for enterprising youths, is preserved.
Webber sponsors legislation, A-4213, that
allows the unregulated solicitation to shovel snow within 24 hours of a predicted
snowstorm. The Assembly State and Local
Government Committee recently advanced
the bill.
The measure is in response to an incident in Jan. in which two Bridgewater teens
were distributing fliers advertising their
snow shoveling services the night before a
snowstorm was forecast to hit. The boys
were stopped by police and told they were

60TH

violating a local law prohibiting unpermitted solicitation.

Kids have been shoveling snow for
extra cash probably since snow shovels
have existed, said Webber, R-Morris,
Essex and Passaic. Those two young men
saw an opportunity to use their time off
from school wisely by developing a plan to
make money. Instead, they got a lesson in
ridiculous government bureaucracy. What
they did showed initiative that should have
been commended, not punished. Common
sense needs to prevail in these situations,
and this measure helps ensure that it will.
Webbers bill will supersede any municipalitys ordinance that prevents an individual from offering snow shoveling services
within 24 hours of a forecasted snowstorm.

In 1903 Thomas Edisons Studio Created Cinematic History & NJs Lackawanna
Railroad Became The Union Pacific Railroad In The Great Train Robbery

by Michele Guttenberger
he 21st Century still carries the tradition of the summer hit movies at local theaters. New Jersey can be
proud of its renowned cinema heritage as the foremost movie production location that created the first outdoor
action adventure movies. The seeds of the movie industry
were planted in the last decades of the 19th Century with its
original landmark footprints in New Jersey. It all started in
1888 when Eadweard Muybridge, a world famous photographer stopped by Edisons lab in West Orange to meet with
him to show off his zoopraxiscope. It was a machine that
projected images from rotating glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. Muybridge wanted to
partner Edison's phonograph invention with his
"Zoopraxiscope" to combine sight with sound. Edison was
more fascinated with Muybridges moving image concept
than he was with his animation machine. Edison decided to
venture into the moving picture business with his own innovations and gave the research and development project to his
employee William K.L. Dickson. Dickson an English engineer often pleaded with Edison to approve experiments for
moving pictures. Edison had little interest in these motion
pictures ideas Dickson presented but, that soon changed
after his meeting with Muybridge. The result was the
Kinetograph camera and the Kinetoscope viewer both
patented in 1891. By December 1892, the first motion picture studio was erected in West Orange NJ. Movies were

being produced in the Black Maria studio location up until

1901. The Edison studio then moved their set production to
New York City with a new glass-topped studio building that
could let the sunlight in and protect the movie work from
inclement weather. The first movie cameras depended on
very bright natural sunlight to shoot a scene.
The Kinetograph was a huge wooden camera the size of
an average doghouse that Edison even called it The
Doghouse. The camera was so large it took two men to
move it. It was this doghouse camera that shot one of the
first outdoor adventure films that movie historians claim is
one of the greatest films in cinematic history. The Great
Train Robbery was shot at various outdoor locations. It was
a one-reeler action flick, 10 minutes long, 14-scenes, directed and photographed by Edwin S. Porter. The 1903 film
pulled all the stops on modern filming innovation. It used a
number of cutting edge techniques for the first time which
included parallel editing, minor camera movement, location
shooting and camera placements that were not stage-bound.
It included sophisticated jump-cuts or cross-cuts and provided a refined editing technique that showed two separate lines
of action events happening continuously at duplicate times
in different places. The Great Train Robbery was inspired by
a real robbery that took place on August 29, 1900, when four
members of George Leroy Parker's (Butch Cassidy) 'Hole in
the Wall' gang seized the Union Pacific Railroad No. 3 train
in its tracks near Table Rock, Wyoming. Not one scene was

filmed on the western expanse of Wyoming but places such

as Dover, West Orange, Essex County Park, Orange
Mountains, and the Lackawanna Railroad of New Jersey. It
was Thomas Edisons film team of northern New Jersey that
started the magic of cinematography and ignited the extraordinary world of Hollywood that now has a legacy that
expands three centuries.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY
For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients
with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure
has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

The Rose House Offers Kindness

For Those With Developmental Disabilities

By Ejvind Boccolini
ll throughout northern New
Jersey, an organization is helping
adults with intellectual and/or
developmental disabilities lead more
meaningful lives as they become integrated into the community and workforce
more and more.
The Rose House, in Morris Plains, is a
"non-profit organization, providing person-centered programs for developmentally disabled adults, helping them to pursue their goals and dreams, and become
valued members of their communities,"
their website reads.
Earlier this month, Tom Mitchell of
the Rose House spoke in a phone interview about upcoming programs and the
help they have given individuals with
intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
The Rose House serves adults with
Intellectual
and
Developmental
Disabilities (IDD) such as Down

Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and

Autism Spectrum Disorders. Its contact
information is info@TheRoseHouse.org;
and its website is TheRoseHouse.org.
Mitchell said The Rose House has
programs to help out families with an
IDD individuals, and the men and women
themselves, visiting their homes for possibly a few hours each day or each week,
depending on the level of care. There are
different levels of vocational training and
"self-directed" supports as well, and IDD
individuals also visit the community for
activities.
In Parsippany, at the Parsippany PAL,
there is the Rose House Cafe, a community center-type facility in which IDD
men and women serve tasty muffins,
soups, salads, chips and hot dogs to the
members and occasional members of the
community. This is one example of how
IDD men and women have been trained
and integrated into the workforce, each
gaining a personal uplift and creating a

Vista Parking Unlocks The Key To Secure,

Convenient Parking

By Cheryl Conway
oing on a trip, whether business or pleasure,
can be stressful especially if it involves driving
to the airport, deciding where to park in crowded lots, remembering where the car is parked, getting
the luggage out of the vehicle and then finding the
means to get to the gate in time for a flight.
A lot of these concerns can be avoided for those drivers who choose Vista Parking for their off-site parking
destination. Located directly across Newark Liberty
International Airport, customers can park their car valet
style in a secure 24-hour access lot before they even get
to the busy airport and then receive car-door to airportdoor service any time of day without any wait.
Family operated and owned since 1988, Vista
Parking has been providing the most convenient means
of off-site parking for travelers who use Newark
Airport.
The service at Vista Parking is much more convenient than long-term because its a door to door service,
says the company president. Customers are immediately greeted by a van; theres no waiting for shuttles, not

waiting every 15 minutes. We take you on demand; you

come in, we are ready to go. Unlike other lots, They
are not walking through long dark parking lots in snow
or far away.
What used to be four or five lots at Newark Airport
has grown, but at Vista Parking customers can park
before they get to the airport.
We are right there, says the owner. We are located
right when you come off 78; right at the end of the exit,
right at exit 58B; or exit 14 off of the NJ Turnpike
located at the Howard Johnsons Hotel in Newark.
At Vista Parking, award winning service is provided; cars are kept in a safe and secure lot; and service is
available 24 hours a day.
Customers get free shuttle service to the airport, just
a three minute ride. We drop you off right at the terminal and pick you up right at the terminal. Also offered
are corporate rates, fast check out, all valet parking, frequent parker rewards club, luggage assistance and security.
All size vehicles are welcome and there is no minimum to days parked.

We are very customer service friendly, he said.

Once you pull in you dont have to pull your bags. We
clean off your car when it snows. Theres nothing worse
than coming home from the Bahamas and theres two
feet of snow on your car. We make it so simple for you.
It starts and finishes so nice. This is valet; the car is
brought up to you, warmed up on a cool night.
According to the website, At Vista Parking, you
wont have to worry about navigating massive parking
garages or where you parked your car. All you have to
do is call the number on your claim ticket and one of our
shuttles will be dispatched to meet you at the arrival terminal and return you to your vehicle.
At random parking lots, cars can be stolen, misplaced, sometimes people forget where they parked their
car or what row they are in. If you have a problem with
your car when you get back, it just brings aggravation.
Cost to park at Vista Parking is reasonably priced at
$48 a day for short term parking; and $13 to $14 a day
for long-term parking. For more information, go to
www.vistaparking.com or call 973-263-2009 or 973 465
9400.

Welcome Home An Exchange

Student This Fall

elcome home a child from

an AFS Exchange Student. Each year,
AFS Intercultural Programs/USA, a leading international non-profit high school
student exchange for more than 60 years,
welcomes 2,500 high school students
from more than 90 countries into communities like Morristown. These students
are eager to attend a local high school,
live with a host family and discover what
America is all about.
AFS-USA is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS
Exchange student, families will help
build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting
with an outstanding young person.
Area resident and AFS volunteer, Sue
Fershing, whose family hosted more than
a dozen exchange students through AFS

since 1986, said "This is the most

rewarding thing we've ever done. We
love staying in touch with our AFSers,
who come back to visit us years later. It's
not the end, it's the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
Host families provide a bed and
meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support students as they would their own children.
Students come with full medical insurance and personal spending money.
Families and their hosted students
receive ongoing support from AFS staff
and experienced, local volunteers.

Upcoming Annual Golf Event Supports Kids With Cancer

By Cheryl Conway
ineteen years ago, at the age of six,
Carlos Raymond Saavedra of
Wayne was diagnosed with cancer
and told he would have less than four
months to live.
When he was sent to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. to
undergo experimental treatment, along with
seven other children, he beat the odds and
was the lone survivor.
To honor Carlos and his survival against
medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor found
in the brain stem, his family set up a foundation- The Carlos Raymond Saavedra
Foundation (C.R.S.)- in his name to support
St. Judes, cancer victims and their families.
The foundations annual golf outing
fundraiser raises thousands of dollars for
this cause.
The Fifth Annual Carlos Raymond
Saavedra Foundation Golf Outing is set for
Wed., Sept. 23, at the Preakness Valley Golf
Course in Wayne. Shot gun start is at 9:30
a.m.; dinner, drinks and silent auction will
continue at 5 p.m. at the Carriage House.
Prizes will be awarded in different areas

like the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Cost is $150 per person, includes dinner;
$85 without dinner; and $75 dinner only.
Golf cart included. With 80 golfers last year,
golf outing organizers are hoping to attract
100 golfers this year.
The event is open to the public for both
men and women. Everyones invited; its a
good fun day, says Denise Caposella, original foundation founder and president.
Caposella and her husband, Michael,
who chairs the golf event, started the foundation to honor their nephew, Carlos.
It was Oct. 11, 1996, when Carlos was
diagnosed with cancer and underwent several surgeries.
After a 15 hour brain surgery procedure, the family was told he was bleeding to
death. So the doctors stopped the surgery
and closed him up. While everyone was
devastated with the news, God gave Carlos
Raymond a miracle and the bleeding miraculously stopped.
Carlos went to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital to undergo an experimental protocol with seven other children,
who all died but him, explains Caposella.

Pictured, from left, is Michael Caposella, Carlos Raymond Saavedra, and Carlos Saavedra Sr.

Carlos was left almost completely deaf

with some learning disabilities. His parents,
Linda and Carlos Sr., struggled to pay for all
the costs and relied heavily on donations.
We started it in his honor to pay it forward because he was so fortunate, says
Caposella. The foundation pays St. Judes to
help other families pay for children battling

again this summer to that camp, where Carlos was a camp
counselor last year.
Since the foundation was established, C.R.S. has donated $23,000 so far, with $11,000 to St. Judes; and the
remaining helping nine families in the U.S. and to the
campers.
Carlos, the honorary chair of the foundation, is thrilled
to have the foundation. It gives him a sense of purpose; it
gives him a good sense of being; he likes to pay it forward,
says Caposella.
Carlos started his own online hat company last year with
his two younger sisters, Larraine and Natalia. The cancer
treatments have left him bald and sensitive to others who do
not have hair. For every hat that is purchased, another hat is
donated to a child with cancer. Called Halo Hats, all kinds
of hats are sold such as ski caps, golf hats, sun hats. He also
provides the hats for each golfer at the C.R.S. Golf Outing
and even passed out hats to patients at St. Judes.
A small foundation, the C.R.S. Golf Outing is the only
fundraiser held. Golf was the chosen event as Michael
Caposella volunteers on the Paterson Fire Dept., and figures
since most firemen like to golf he knew he could get firemen to go, says Caposella.
With such a good time had every year, they say Im
bringing back a four-some next year, says Caposella. We
started it with 50 golfers; it has grown.

Check Out Quick And Easy Check Cashing

In East Hanover

By Cheryl Conway
ashing a check just got easier with a new cash checking store that recently opened in East Hanover.

Cash Centers of New Jersey on Route 10 in East Hanover

opened in January, and is one of nine locations in Morris and
Essex counties. Licensed by the department of banking,
Cash Centers of NJ does not hold any money or accounts
like other banks.
Whether for business or personal use, customers can cash
their check without having a bank account.
Some people dont carry balances in accounts so they
have to wait to cash a check, says Tommy Wilson, company president. Its a great tool for cash flow for companies.
We are allowed to cash third party checks.
For a small fee, customers can cash a check without waiting for funds to clear and without a minimum balance in an
account.
You dont have to wait for your check to clear; you can
get cash right away, he says. We are trying to make it convenient for people.
Customers can get their funds immediately. Just endorse
the check, show an ID and the money is yours, as stated on
the website. Its as easy as that. There are no holds, no
delays, and no red tape, just fast and friendly service with a
smile!

At Cash Centers of NJ, customers pay a two percent fee

for check cashing.
We offer the lowest rates in the business and cash all
types of checks, no matter how large or small including
payroll checks, tax returns, settlement checks, social security checks, unemployment checks, personal checks, government checks, insurance settlement checks, cashiers checks,
company checks and money orders.
In addition to check cashing, money orders are sold as
well as wire transfers and debit cards for a separate fee.
Instead of carrying cash, individuals can purchase a preloaded Visa debit card for a designated amount.
Wilson opened his first check-cashing store 18 years ago
in Montclair. Other stores opened up in Parsippany, West
Orange, Orange, Bloomfield and other areas. Each of his
stores also features an added business in the lobby like
designer fragrances, lottery machines, and even a NJ
licensed pawn broker service at the East Hanover store.
Besides the convenience of cashing checks, customers
will experience great customer service and friendliness by
company workers.
We build a personal relationship and rapport with the
people, says Wilson.
Hours for the East Hanover store are Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to
6 p.m.; and Sat., 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, go
to cashcentersofnj.com or call 973-599-9400.
