RESIDENTS ACTION GROUP

ELECTS NEW LEADER
In a major development at the AGM of Tatworth and Forton's
Residents Action Group (RAG) saw Robin Munday elected
unopposed as its new Leader. Mr Munday thanked the
outgoing Leader, Andrew Turpin. He has also told The Drift
that it will continue to publish updates of the various group
activities, adding that if there are new ideas or comments
out there he will be pleased to receive them.
Other AGM business included presentation of project team
reports, re-election en-bloc of the Team Leaders, and the reelection of Nick Bernard as Treasurer.
All contact details appear on page 7.

ACTIVE LIVING PROJECT TEAM

REPORT OF ACTIVITIES JULY 2014 - MAY 2015
Our grant from Somerset County Council for the financial year
2015/2016 was 356, a 25% reduction on the previous year.
We continue however to enjoy a healthy balance, built up
over the years. The Project Team has participated in this
activity under its various names (POPP, Active Living for the
Over 55s, Somerset You Can Do) since 2007, having
successfully bid in 2006 for a grant from the Blackdown Hills
Partnership for computers courses.
This years activities have included a Stained Glass Workshop,
talks on a Life in the Theatre, a Childhood on Wedmore and
being a Town Crier, a coach trip to the Imperial War Museum
and a very successful showing of two films, one on The Chard
to Taunton Canal and the other on the Chaffcombe
Waterwheel. Audiences have varied from 8 to 40. We have
also been represented at gatherings of other groups in the
county organised by our funders.
The 2015 programme also includes a film about the Starlings
on the Levels and a coach trip to Portsmouth Dockyard.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING PROJECT

Report on Activities for Year Ending May 2015
The project comprises four ongoing activities:
1) Chiropody and Podiatry: Christian Grimminger visits the
Hall once each month to provide services to patients who find
it inconvenient to attend his clinics in Chard. This monthly
session has been running for nearly three years and is very
well attended.
2) Complementary Therapies: A Cooperative Group of three
local therapists offer treatments two or three times a month
at the Hall. Remedial massage, Reiki, Reflexology, Healing
and Indian Head massage are among the treatments offered.
These sessions have been running for more than three years
and are well supported.
3) Exercise Class: This weekly class for senior citizens
concentrates on cardiovascular exercise and muscular and
joint conditioning. It is lead by a professional instructor and

Issue 70 The DRIFT

Issue 70
there are twenty on the register. The average age of the class
is well over 70 but they are as fit as 50 year-olds!
4) Parkinson`s Group: This group meets monthly and was
started by the late Jack Frost as a support group for patients
with Parkinson`s Disease and their carers. It is now well
established and affiliated to the national Charity Parkinson`s
U.K.
We are always on the lookout for new initiatives to encourage
and improve the health and well-being of residents of the
parish. There is scope within our budget for some financial
support for new work as all the activity streams mentioned
above which benefited from initial RAG funding are now fully
established and self-supporting.

ENVIRONMENT GROUP REPORT TO RAG

Judy MacOmish reports:
I don't really have anything to report regarding work that the
environment group has done. However, there are a couple of
things going on which which are relevant and I will just say a
couple of words at the meeting and perhaps ask for input
from those involved. I would like it minuted that grateful
thanks are extended to George ans Sandra Beattie for all
their hard work in the improvement of the Coombses Pond
area.

TATWORTH & FORTON COMMUNITY

SPEEDWATCH
Report to the RAG AGM on 16th June 2015

Doug Allen is the Coordinator of our Community Speedwatch

Team and this is a condensed version of his report:

The Team

Formed in 2007, we still have 5 founder-members, although

the team now numbers just 9 of which only 5 can regularly
help to perform watches. However, we still manage to put
out a Team at least once a week and usually twice. Anyone
who can spare even an hour a month is welcome to join us.
Please contact any member of the Team.

Results for the year 1st May 2014 31st May 2015

Some of our 11 sites are no longer regularly monitored, as

over the years they have shown such an improvement that
monitoring is deemed no longer necessary.
Compared with
28.6% of vehicles found to be speeding when we first started
in 2007, the range of our present 4 worst sites now register in
the range 6.3% to 5%, but are all well above the SouthSomerset CSWs Group average of just 3%. This concerns us,
and future watches will be concentrated on these sites.

SAFE week

This year, the Avon & Somerset Constabulary organised their

usual annual Speed Awareness For Everyone day as a whole
week. The support we received from the Police in Tatworth
far exceeded that afforded to the entire SS Group. We are
very grateful for the support we received from our Local Beat
Manager, PC Alan Hollick and his colleagues, and to the RPU
and SEU officers that also attended. (cont. page 2/column 2)

TATWORTH AND FORTON PARISH COUNCIL

Jubilee Field
There is continuing interest in the Councils Jubilee Field.
One of our new Councillors, Sarah Holdsworth has conducted a
Botanical Report, dated 6th June on the Jubilee Field:
There is virtually no weed problem, apart from Rumex
obtusifolius (Broad-leaved Dock) in a few small patches
almost exclusively at the bottom end of Jubilee Field. That
would only take 4 or 5 people 2 days to completely clear.
(Our team of volunteers are hoping to clear this shortly.)
The rest of Jubilee and Allotment Fields has a good mix of
wild flowers and grasses. There is a predominance of Corn
Buttercup (Ranunculus arvensis) which is quite rare now in
Britain due to broad-use herbicides, so its good to see it
here. And also there is a lot of Common Sorrel (Rumex
acetosa) which is a beneficial wildflower and absolutely not a
weed. It is a good food source for many moth caterpillars.
This represents a very healthy balance (there was also some
lovely small non-weed Thistles), and I believe for
conservation reasons it must not receive any herbicides, and
especially important not near the allotments because for
example Aminopyralid has caused serious problems for
growers as it does not break down easily (is persistent in the
soil) and kills off some vegetable seedlings.

Coombses Pond
Coombses Pond is attracting a great deal of interest to this
peaceful haven of wildlife.
Excellent work is being
undertaken by volunteers with Cllrs George and Sandra Beattie
leading the project. The Council has recently installed a table
and bench seats for the publics use.

Adopt a Path Scheme

Somerset County Council (SCC) will shortly be introducing a
new scheme called Adopt a Path Scheme. The scheme is open
to everyone between 18 and 75 years old. SCC would like
volunteers to:

Walk a path, or ride/cycle a bridleway/restricted

byway as often as possible.

Report any problems encountered to them or a local

Adopt-a-path Co-ordinator.

Help with cutting vegetation back from signs, stiles

and gates.

Keep an approximate total of time spent clearing

vegetation.

Promote responsible use of the path.

SCC will give help and advice with any rights of way questions,
provide cover under their insurance policy whilst carrying out
this role and loan gloves and tools to do the clearance. To
take part either go online www.somerset.go.uk/rightsofway to
fill in the application form or contact Rights of Way Service,
Somerset County Council, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY,
telephone number 0300 123 2224. SCC will then send you a
map asking you to mark which paths you would like to adopt.
When returning the map SCC will send you relevant
information and details of any local co-ordinator.

Allotments
Testimonial from David Francis an allotment holder:
I have been gardening in a plot at the new Allotment off
School Lane since February this year and found it a rewarding
experience. This is my third allotment but easily the most
fertile. There is a general agreement amongst the Allotment
tenants that the soil in the Jubilee site is good for growing
vegetables. Everything I have planted has taken with some
help from a good supply of free manure and water from the
spring which has been fitted with a water pump. We are now
eating Broad Beans, Snap Peas, Peas & Courgettes. We expect
be eating main crop Potatoes and Onions soon.

The Parish Council continue to support Allotment Holders by

holding meetings with Tenants to hear their views and
suggestions. Also some Councillors have been appointed as
Allotment Co-Ordinators to support the Allotments. I would
recommend anyone who wants to grow more food and have an
interesting healthy hobby to consider taking a plot. Full and
half plots are available.
If you are interested in taking the opportunity of having an
allotment, please either contact the Clerk or you are welcome
to attend the next Allotment Holders Meeting, being held on
Monday 26th October in the Brewer Room, Tatworth Memorial
Hall at 7.30 pm. The Clerks contact details are below.

WALKS GROUP REPORT TO RAG JUNE 2015

Jane McGee reports:
I have not led walks for over a year but recommenced on
Sunday 10th May when we walked 5 to 6 miles to Holdich and
back. I plan a walk to the Cotley Inn 28th July.
The informal Tuesday group continues starting from the layby opposite Perry Street Club at 10am. Anyone is welcome
we agree direction and length when we meet, to encompass
the individual needs of the group.
I am grateful to George Beattie who always responds to and
sorts any problems (dead badger on path, broken style etc).

THE DRIFT
A Report to the RAG AGM 16 June 2015

An abridged version of the full report by Russ Wardell:

The February 2015 issue of The Drift saw the beginning of its
13th year of publication and the December 2014 edition was
number 66.
The Facebook page has proved useful for carrying information
which either can't find room in a current issue, as well as such
things as the election information which becomes current and
relevant between publication dates. Everyone is invited to
Like it!
Thank you to those people and organisations who have
donated towards the The Drift. Sponsorship and donations,
both large and small, which, together with our volunteers, are
all essential to our continued publication.
Thanks also to Robin and Sandra Munday, our printers, who
continue to support us so well, and to my colleague Phillip
Pepperrell.
Many thanks to our volunteer distributors. They supply the
vital time and effort to get The Drift to our letter boxes.

Clearly without them publication would not be worthwhile.

Equally essential is the reserve list of distributors. As you
know, people move and everyone is entitled to holidays, so it
is vital that we have a list of volunteers who can be called
upon to fill in or take over a full-time route.
More volunteers are needed - so much so that delivery to a
large part of Forton is in jeopardy if a volunteer cannot be
found.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact me my contact
details are in The Drift. You may see more of Tatworth and
Forton as well as provide a service to your newsletter.
Also vital to our publication are the contributors of content
and many thanks to them. Please keep it coming!
Although we like to receive your content by email, we will be
happy with other methods. Often copy arrives via 1st class
snail mail!
Still outstanding is the issue of advertising.
The
administrative side of advertising is vitally in need of
addressing and I would like to hear from anyone who would
like to volunteer their help with filling this vacuum.
Finally I would like to remind RAG that I will be standing down
at the end of 2015 after the December issue. The 2015 AGM
might provide a suitable opportunity for discussing the future
of The Drift.

that would be a great help. Cheques should be made payable

T&F MOVIES - FILMS FOR THE AUTUMN

The films shown over the spring and summer were well

enjoyed. The winner in the popularity stakes was "What we
did on our Holiday" closely followed by "The Imitation Game".
The Hall Management Committee would like to thank you for
your support - we look forward to seeing you all (with friends)

A powerful family drama set in France at the time of the Nazi

Our chairman Rosalie Palmer welcomed members and six

Inspired by Nature and the evening promises to be very
enjoyable. We then welcomed Sue Neale from Ilfracombe and
she presented six designs. Not only did she arrange beautiful
flowers but her husband played music while she demonstrated
and Sue sang two beautiful songs. Anne Goody gave the very

well earned vote of thanks. I am sure our members and

visitors enjoyed a very entertaining afternoon.

with dry and sunny weather this year, although the strong
winds gave us a few problems like the other stalls, but we had
a steady flow of customers resulting in a contribution of

Our next meeting will be at Tatworth Church Rooms on

TATWORTH WOMENS INSTITUTE MEETINGS HELD

IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER

TATWORTH & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Marguerita Bond writes:

There is a change of speaker for the meeting on the 20th
August as Marion Hutter, who was going to demonstrate how to
make "Rag Rugs" is unable to come. The new speaker will now
be from "The Free Wheelers" of Honiton.
To celebrate the WI Centenary, there will be a party on
Saturday the 26th September and the WI has invited Graham
Walton to talk about his life as the father of sextuplets in
"Living with Seven Women." There will be no speaker at the
meeting on Thursday the 17th September and instead it will
be a "Members Evening."
Tatworth WI has been fortunate to gain several new members
recently, so to enable everyone to get to know their fellow
members better, it is proposed that there should be a session,
run on speed dating lines, where each member has the
opportunity, for a maximum period of one minute each time,
to introduce herself to another member. There will also be an
"Autumn Bring and Buy Stall" for cakes, preserves, chutneys
and any autumn produce from members gardens.

The visit on the 6th July 2015 to The Bishop's Palace and
Gardens at Wells, ended this season's trips, and we
experienced the pristine gardens, the Palace and the Chapel.
Thanks are extended to all who have supported the 2015 trips.
The 55th Annual Open Show of the Society will be held in
Tatworth Memorial Hall commencing at 14:30 on Saturday 29th
August 2015. The Show schedules and entry forms are now
available at Herbert's Newsagents - Waterlake Road, McColls
South Chard Post Office Dyke Hill, the foyers at Tatworth
Memorial Hall or from a committee member. This is OUR
VILLAGE SHOW and all - young, middling and old - are
encouraged to support by exhibiting, attending on the day or
both.
August is probably the best month in the garden. There is
usually an abundance of flowers and it is a prime time to reap
the rewards of one's 'labours' in the harvesting of fruit and
vegetables. A little regular time giving attention to the
ripening crops will guarantee good results.

HOW THE GROUP AND THE DRIFT STARTED

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP

Hester Down writes:
There were no meetings in June and July, but we held a
garden party on 19th June. Although attendance was low, the
event raised approximately 200 towards our project for this
year which is the proposed storage accommodation for the
church room. As usual we also had a stall at the Church Fte
in the Tatworth Playing Field on Saturday 4th July where we

Robin Munday writes:

RAG and The Drift came about in 2004 as a direct result of the
Jubilee Parish Plan and a questionnaire put to every household
in the Parish at that time. This enabled all residents to have
an input.
Project Teams were created and details of those currently in
existence are listed in every newsletter.
There is also a website which gives information of the modern
Parish and its history, details of some projects and some
information as to local businesses.
This is a very abbreviated background. More information of
the survey is available for those interested, bearing in mind
the considerable changes, new properties and changes in
households that have taken place over the years.
The first issue of The Drift was in January 2004 and has been
developed over the years to that which exists today.
Throughout, from editor to design and distribution all have
been undertaken by volunteers, their efforts do not go
unnoticed and are very much appreciated.
The objective was to provide information of activities in the
Parish - a whats on diary, News and Events, Personal Stories,
fun articles, quizzes, in fact anything you wanted to tell other
residents. The publication has been a good vehicle for this
purpose over the years.

www.tatworthandforton.co.uk

It is felt however that it has been underused in some aspects

but perhaps oversubscribed in others. The Drift is the Parish
Newsletter, but the news from Forton has been under
subscribed over the last few issues. In an attempt to
encourage involvement, some organisations have been
approached in the hope that they will generate contributions
from that part of the Parish.
Come on Tatworth and Forton, it is the village Newsletter so
lets make it informative for all.

COMMUNITY MINI BUS PROJECT

Robin Munday writes:
Following discussions with a National Organisation who support
village projects, Tatworth and Forton public transport
circumstances have been evaluated and accepted for further
investigation.
As a result, limited funds have been granted which will enable
work to establish the need and the level of support for such a
project before progressing to the creation of a business plan.
To this end a questionnaire is enclosed in The Drift.
On the basis that there is sufficient support coming from
Tatworth and Forton, it is hoped that Hawkchurch,
Thorncombe and Winsham may also be interested and a survey
form is also being distributed in those villages.
Arrangements have been made for completed forms to be
returned to McColls, Perry Print in Dyke Hill or Herberts News
in Waterlake Road.
In view of the present uncertain Bus Service through the
village please complete and return the survey by no later that
31st August 2015.

felt they could not manage getting on and off trains still on
board) where they were then driven on to Eggesford Garden
Centre for a roast chicken dinner. A truly lovely dinner, and
possibly worthy of another visit another year. This was
followed by a short talk on the history of Eggesford. After
lunch members either walked or were taken by coach down to
the quaint but beautiful 12th century church where the
Garden Centre owner also attended to answer any questions.
It was then back to the Garden Centre for a cup of tea before
the journey home.
Thursday 9th July was bingo at Tatworth Playing Fields where
we had another two persons become members.
Our August trip is to Weymouth on 20th August. We are a very
friendly, happy group of people, and visitors are always
welcome to join us, as are new members.

ST JOHN'S CHURCH NEWS

Daphne Carslake writes:

The Summer Fte

The Fte was held at the Tatworth Playing Fields on 4th July lovely sunshine, but a gale blowing! The stalls and craft
marquee attracted many buyers and the Car Boot did a good
trade too. The entertainment was provided by Kelly Leigh's
youngest dancers who delighted the crowd. The Karizma
Majoretts marched and twirled with precision and grace, much
appreciated by all. The ice-cream and burger sellers did a
roaring trade and many enjoyed tea and cakes in the sunshine
and everyone had a really good time. It resulted in a record
amount of 1639.52 raised for Church funds. A big thank you
to all who supported that day in any way.

The Big Picnic

For the first time, St John's combined with South Chard Church
to host a service of worship and prayer in the open air at the
Playing Fields on Sunday 5th July. With jobs evenly shared,
the preparations produced an amazing morning of fun filled
worship with 70+ people enjoying sausage sandwiches and
beef burgers, together with coffee, tea and doughnuts and
home made 'fish' biscuits, during the whole morning. The
biblical theme was the feeding of the five thousand, narrated
by the Rev Tim and Bill and distributed by young people in
costume. The Manna Puppets told the story through the eyes
of 'Ben' whose mother's shopping he had shared. Thanks to all
who came and shared the experience.

Teddy Bears' August Picnic

On Saturday 22nd August, there will be a Teddy Bears' Picnic in

the Church room and grounds. There will be afternoon tea,
prizes for bears and for the best summer hat worn by ladies
attending! It will be from 3pm to 5pm. Do come along with
your bear (not confined to children's); my Bruin is looking
forward to an outing, even though he is now more than 70
years old! There will be games of skill and luck and a raffle.
Everyone welcome!
